in the 90's, the worst thing a person could be, was a sell out. Today, that's an aspiration and people love it.
In the 90s they didn't have to be.
You had me at 'branded home-spunnery of late stage capitalism'.
I drink every time Richard says "by and large"!
Clicking Like hours before it has even premiered is to show my appreciation for the high quality and consistency of your program!
"They can fix that in post" is a handy euphamism among dressing props for "We're not f***ing moving that!". But then it gets moved anyway because "it's not that kind of film" - another handy euphamism meaning we don't have the budget. Looking at a fence on the edge of a forest and understanding the effort involved, I once heard a designer say "I'm afraid we'll have to fix those posts in prep".
I LOVE the parallel between self-care woo and Catholic indulgences. Genius.
Just proves that everything has been done before, a great spot on the connection though. Embrace your minimalist self: buy my stuff!
Really enjoying these podcasts. I'd even go so far to say that each one surpasses the previous edition. Two extremely engaging presenters, with knowledge and good humour.
Looking forward to the next one already!
The week's wittiest podcast. Please don't ever stop.
...I'm not the only one who actually really would like to see a Scrappy-Do deep dive, right?
Anyone curious about the less-good Countdown era - it was Anne Robinson. Predictably, she didn't give a toss about the show and everyone hated her. My theory is that C4 execs were trying to kill the show by hiring her, I can't think of any other explanation why they'd kick themselves in the face with such force
It was evident just watching a single round of letters that there was no chemistry. It was very tense
If they wanted the show to end then they would have done it after the original host Richard Whiteley died in 2005.
@@skylarius3757 I can't believe I have to explain this, but a lot of things changed between 2005 and 2021
Really nice to see over an hr this time. This podcast deserves more subs and more praise. Insightful and funny.
Continuity is so interesting. I’m not sure if this fits in, but watching Only Connect, my daughter found the best part was watching VCM move to introduce the second team for the ‘Wall’ segment . It’s seamless and so fluid, we softly say, ‘ well done’ each time.
You *do* know they re-shoot each segment until they get it right, right?

can’t tell you how much I’m looking forward to “in praise of countdown and susie dent”
this is my favourite new channel!
If you hear a knocking on the door it’ll be Rob Brydon wanting his studio back.
😂😂
I, like every other tiresome person, always referred to the grill as a George Formby. That is until recently, when my partner mispoke brilliantly. These days we grill with the Martin Freeman.
Quickly becoming one of my favourite UA-cam conversation channels
Hey guys, loving the podcast. Couple of notes as a slightly irate viewer...
Bring back the two-shot!
Is the compilation format just a one-off? I had to hunt out the audio cast on Tuesday - committed - and now I'm having to listen through again on the live before I get to what I assume is the new content?
I get the experimentation with delivery strategy, but I love me some sweet continuity, it's genius!
Also, not a fan of the transitions. It's making everything feel a bit more 'clipped' and discombobulating.
Still, my top podcast of the moment. Keep it coming.
Brilliant, as always.
editors!
I need a sharable clip around 4:24 , ten seconds, where Marina says religion is Out , self care is In, and the answer is apparently To buy another thing .
such a smart statement
Please and thanks.
Loving the the new on screen graphics
Brilliant episode!
Another great conversation.
Marina’s earrings - I love them….and they would definitely cure all my ails👍🏻
That beep was awesome (and surprisingly long)
On triathletes - two of my nephews have worn the Team GB vest on triathlons *so proud of them*.
Give them money. They feckin' deserve it for all the training they do....and Team GB only supplies the vest if you're not part of the elite set-up.
That means they pay for their own flights and rooms to wherever the triathlon is - not horrendous if it's in the Balearics but you're still paying to represent your country.
Sure, if Abi from accounts is rattling a tin at you for a charity you've not heard of you're just supporting a charity you've not heard of. But the high level athletes, who need a non charitable donation just to represent the country, really deserve a £5er from your pocket.
Just come across this UA-cam channel think it’s really great❤
YES HOUR LONG EPISODE BABBBBY
I always joked with my brother, on Supermarket Sweep an answer was wrong if you didn't also say Dale.
Marina on fire today! Great stuff.
Its growing on me this channel/podcast.
Chance listen and thoroughly enjoyed both of you and your humor!
Regarding Go Woke Go Broke ..I think Disney and Budwiser might argue it has at least some merits
Don’t know about Budwiser but Disney profits are rising every year the last few years and shareprices, while not where they were during the pandemic when streaming was exploding are much higher then ten years ago.
Budweisers profits have risen - while the right loves to woke go broke, it’s not really rule. What really happens is go woke - wait for right to lose their little snowflake minds over a pronoun- wait for the to rage promote your product - watch the profits rise after an initial dip. Seriously Nike,Keurig,Budweiser etc actually know right wing rage is a great
Way to increase profits.
See now you’ve got me searching Supermarket Sweep and Susie Dent’s first Countdown which inevitably will lead me down the UA-cam rabbit hole. *shakes fist* Damn you!
Love the show... Please bring back the camera angle you used in previous episodes (the new angles and editing don't work as well). Keep up the great work ❤
Rest assured, we’ll be back in the normal studio next week💪
When Mariana’s mentioned about you not having ownership of your life story my mind directly went to the verse in Hamilton, when Washington tells Hamilton “you have no control, who lives, who dies, who tells your story”.
this and the overlap on a thursday :)
Changing the watermark to "You Can't Libel the Dead" was a great joke. Well done!
its so endearing to see a spot of mustard (?) on Marina's jumper elbow
Great episode. Not even distracted by the yellow elbow stain:)
She raised her elbow just as i read your comment.
I love these hour long T.R.I.E episodes
I saw Ben Shepherd give away a bottle of wine with his face on during an episode of Tipping Point Lucky Stars
A tin of Entertainments at Christmas would sound good Richard
The example of Henry Cavill’s moustache in Mission Impossible… his character was a major part of that film and appears all the way through it, not “a tiny part” as described by Marina.
Salted caramel something in that xmas choco box
Another great episode. New transition screens are a fun addition. BUT... i before e, except after c....'receive' is spelled wrong on the first paragraph. I know, I hate myself for noticing too!
Their lifestyles require more and more money when you buy things that are outrageous prices. Being famous ain't cheap
You make a very interesting point about the movie stars' films being watched by the same people but 20 years later on a different format (streaming). Assuming technology remains on demand, won't the franchise films / actors etc come round in another 20 years?
In a movie I was an extra on, there was an assistant who mopped the forest floor to clear the footprints.
The continuity error that always comes to mind for me is from the film "Killing Them Softly". There is a scene in a bar between Brad Pitt and James Gandolfini where James is ordering drinks, drinking and complaining to the waiter. The number of glasses, the positioning and the level of drink in the glasses is all over the place. It's very noticeable because the scene is focused on the drinking but glasses keep refilling.
Denis Norden was doing it'll be alright on the night in the 70s. That was the gateway social media thingy.
A Bargain Hunt question. You know the bit where a team looks at an item but doesn't buy it, instead telling the stallholder they'll come back later? If that happens, but the team doesn't ultimately buy the item the stallholder has reserved, does the BBC then compensate the stallholder in some way for not having been able to sell that item at the fair?
Unless the stallholder is soft in the head - that item is getting sold to the next person waving a handful of £5ers at them.
I'm old enough to remember shopkeepers reserving things for my mum when she asked...but only on the basis of her being a regular customer that was worth cultivating, not a stranger doing a walk in.
I actually spoke to someone who worked in the Henry Cavil/Superman moustache VFX. They didn’t remove the moustache. They replaced the whole bottom half of his face.
Im curious how awards affect an actors pay now. I know in the past an Oscar win basically guaranteed much higher salaries, more power over contract negotiations, etc... but it doesn't seem to hold the same gravitas as it once did.
Also interested since many of the highest paid actors have relatively low activity social media acounts, but for young upcoming actors, they are encouraged to be very active on social media, which is often the thing that takes them down in the long run. Seems like the studios (or possibly society) are setting them up to fail before icon status.
I've been depressed for a long time now. If only I knew I just needed to buy a lot of expensive celebrity endorsed wellness products, just think what sort of happy and fulfilled person I could have been today.
I used to drink in a pub back home that had the racing on for most of the day. The only interruption to that was when they turned over to countdown every afternoon.
If those old men suspected Susie Dent was cheating them and just using a computer they'd have thrown their half of mild through the TV screen!
You don't mess with countdown.
Did some people just think that Susie Dent was like the God of countdown who could always get the longest possible word?
Filmed immediately after a game of 'Eggy Elbow' I see. Richard, you can have that House Of Games, straight swap for a 2Kg tub of Christmas Entertainments.
Those blue overshoes should be called Vera shoes.
The 10 best paid actors.
No 7 changed my life !§!!
Diet coke and coke Zero aren't the same thing, coke Zero was made to be a healthy version of Coke Cola, where as Diet Coke is a different flavour to Coke Cola
triathlons!!!! I'm on that train. hahahahaha!!!
I guess the reason most big movie stars are old is that whole second screen issue again. 20 years ago we had the cinema and the TV and you had a clear distinction between film and TV stars. The younger demos now don't have that split. Why spend money to go to the cinema when you know that film will come out to streaming for a convenient watch. Plus, the definition of celebrity itself has changed so drastically with the rise of UA-cam and TikTok and other social media platforms. Is it simply that trad. media's audience is getting older and that slate of the stars we loved are reflective of that?
Im sure there was a clip show before YBF in the 60s on ITV. But I can only vaguely remember it.
They had "hidden camera" before the home video accident clip shows.
I don't think there were enough people who had their own recording equipment at home, video or super 8 or whatever.
Not until the 80s. Japan was the first to make a TV program with funny home videos in 1986.
@@lakrids-pibe I think I was thinking of candid camera
Statham has made a franchise of Statham movies. Expendables? Fast & Furious? The Beekeeper? The franchise is Statham. True action star.
Sandler owns the production company that has made all his movies. He can pay himself what he wants in what he wants. Happy Gilmore 2 is in production. Would probably get slaughtered in cinemas but on Netflix, a massive hit in the making
Given how the film industry is currently, is there a 'sense' in a being a typecast actor (eg Statham) whose films will be steady earners, rather than someone who wants to 'stretch' themselves into different roles some of which may hit and others miss?
I love your definition of a war crime 🤣
Let’s get Carey Mulligan on the best paid actor list (and let’s get her an Oscar too!)…before she is too old
QUESTION: What ever happened to giant televised stunts like Evel Knievel or David Copperfield
Vegas
The hulk hogan almost getting the George Forman grill is just a hulk hogan lie. He is an old school wrestler and know for stretching the truth. He once said he was going to be the original front man for Metallica
Referring to Henry Cavill as "a superman" is the funniest thing in the world to me. If I heard correctly.
I used to think I was the only person who hated Scrappy-Doo.... then the live action Scooby-Doo film came out and he was the villain (spoiler) and it was at that point I realised he was universally hated by EVERYONE!!!
The Rest is Scrappy Doo Slander
Hello:
I really like your channel. With that. Maybe it’s just me, but when I see a camera shot from behind somebody’s head, looking at a character and talking to that character. To me it looks like they’re looking to a side of their targets head not right directly at the face. Is it just my eyes?
Did I catch a yellow mark on Marina's left sleeve?
Golden ball in snooker is just the Golden Snitch from Harry Potter
This is starting to sound like Succession. "Murdoch's in for it." There it is.
Go-op 🤣
Coke Zero and Diet Coke taste completely different
Margot and Fulham! Where did that come from. Not complaining by any means.
I believe judge Judy had her name in the title so it would be harder to replace her. I think it was going to be called hot desk or hot bench. Conversely the Lorraine show continues and she’s hardly there
Christopher Nolan got 1st $ on Oppenheimer making $75million as a director
Ah 9:30 am 😂
They'd have to pay me to watch Sandler!
Richard went black and white for a bit, what the heck was that!?!
Marina just has to follow up on the benefits of a $4 sponge 😂 Only got half way through the episode. Defo prefer two 20-30 min shows per week than one full 60 min show per week
The crime of Mumford & Sons is tuning a banjo like a guitar instead of learning to play properly.
Coke Zero and Diet Coke taste differently! 🤩
Richard Owman's house of chocolates. Hot cakes I tell you, hot cakes
If all else fails. Start a lifestyle business
I see Marina but which one of those is Richard?!
Meghan should have added ‘Kimono’, ‘Rice’(?) or ‘Chopsticks’ to the random Am/Riv/Orch… otherwise, having ‘included’ US/EU/UK, she, and ‘Ging’ are gonna miss out on the Asian ‘dollar’? 😜👍
Just a little thing but take the figures they quote with a pinch of salt. Ryan Reynolds reported to have got 300m for mint mobile and they said 500m. Sandler got 73m not 100m. They have a point
Solid gold snooker ball?
To be playable it'd have to be hollow - maybe you can conflate 24 carat with solid even if it's hollow.
How goldy does gold have to be? We still consider 9 *cough Rattner* carat gold as gold so.......
Also - wedding rings are solid gold and they have a massive hole in them. Shoddy, that's what that is.
I am minded of the time 50 Cent appeared on The Graham Norton Show and revealed that he made the bulk of his money on Vitamin water.
10:54 coke zero tastes completely different from diet coke.
I was disappointed to type it into what3words, and it didn’t come up with anything 😂
In my House whenever it’s family movie night the first thing we look for is Adam Sandler movie even if it’s 20 years old still funnier than any new family film. Then it’s some random Netflix comedy with no real star, who is the new Sandler?
Three cheers for Fulham! A club that always seems to have had money and has won fuck all.
Margot Robbie of Fulham
Alex Jones who? Never heard about him.
[after seing the clip]
Oh THAT guy. Hahahaha!
Self Explanatory haha
marina is the most cynical person ever, and I love it
