I recently finished the audio version of Matthew Perry's book, "Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing", narrated by himself. A tough listen at times, but beautifully written. Clearly he was a greater talent and a more complex individual than the "Chandler from Friends" persona for which he was known. It also highlights the hypocrisy of the American "rehab" industry, whereby huge profits are made from exploiting people with serious addictions, hidden behind a very thin veil of altruism. I didn't know much about Mr Perry before listening to his story; after doing so I concluded that I liked him. He seemed like a good man who was blighted by a disease with no obvious cure. The tone of his book suggests that he knew how it would end, be it unexpected or intended. His close friends and family genuinely cared for him, but were mostly helpless in the face of his illness. It seems he was loved by everyone - apart from himself.
I could have listened to a whole podcast on the issues around Matthew Perry's death, fame, hangers' on, etc. I just finished a book by Carrie Fisher's ex-PA ("A Star Is Bored") and it depresses me to think of the world that many actors/musicians live in. I love Carrie Fisher's work and I naively believed that she was in recovery for her addictions, like I believed Matthew Perry. I'm too old to be that naive, I guess.
Proud to be (very) old and so in the 80 percent who didn’t know who these people were and couldn’t care a less about them, sundering breakup or not - no doubt our ‘Nation Morns’ at this unimaginable tragedy - Great podcast as ever.
The Traitors AU/NZ/UK with regular people is far superior than the US version with "celebrities". I don't care about them, the game becomes about the people and not the game, which is the reason why the show is great.
@@R.Daneel yes perhaps. I don't consume any linear television and have no social media so I'm not surprised. Only mid 30s, live in London, very social and work in an office with 100s of people though and they have never come up. I just thought it was interesting how much of the episode was dedicated to the 'Charles and Diana' of 2024 and I was 100% oblivious to them even existing.
I live in Australia and their names ring no bells. I shan’t be googling them either. I get the impression I don’t need to know who they are. Somebody please alert me if I’m mistaken! I can feel genuinely sorry when strangers lives/plans go awry without diving into an inter rabbit hole.
Celebrity culture is overblown and ridiculous. It's also encouraged and facilitated by oppressive systems that encourage people to fantasize and escape into dreams of a better life. Excessive fandom is a form of mental illness, you can be a fan or admire someone without spending loads of time and energy thinking about that person
As always, love your podcasts. Thanks Richard for the recommendation. Watched that 1985 documentary about No. 31 bus - absolutely delightful and so refreshing. That little girl was truly delightful - wonder where she is now? The bingo girls made me LOL. Everything back then seemed so much less frantic that today.
Quite a disheartening set of subjects about the poison that festers and corrupts so many parts of the world we live in, albeit discussed interestingly by Marina and Richard. The Steven Spielberg bit in the middle was nice though.
What I've always found weird is how actors and musicians talk about getting vitamin B shots to help them keep going so casually like it's a normal thing. There is nothing wrong with getting a B shot, but most people don't get one daily so they can do their job. It just shows how the entertainment industry treats it's "stars" (cash cows) They can't get sick, tired, lose their voice for even a day because somebody at the top will loose a million.
Thoroughly enjoyed this podcast, surprised not notified when new content dropped. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I've bought an audible book of the murder club from Amazon.
The US version of The Traitors gets such a bad rap because it casts reality stars but honestly that's the thing that makes it so much more watchable for me. It becomes a story within a story because these people have history. Even if I don't know them from Adam, I'm so invested in the past history each of them have and watching them navigate new paths to harmonious living.
I wish Richard had kept going with his Henry 8th comparable to a conclusion that these days, if you're in the "court" of a top level celebrity ,there is virtually no risk or consequences , especially in the USA.
Never had less interest in anything on this podcast than I did the first part of this one. Did have a laugh at the Daily Telegraph being "right-leaning", talk about understatement!
There was a Law & Order SVU years ago where someone uploaded CCTV footage of a famous guy who beat his girlfriend unconscious and dragged her into a car. What did they know back them that no one else did?
I was really disappointed that the molly mae story which felt as if it had finished at 11 minutes but it carried on for twice the amount of time, I love the show but maybe better editing. It’s bad enough that there are ads every four minutes which are skipping ads after 5 seconds which feels redundant, and skipping through fast forward until next item, thus felt like filler rather than concise content
I feel like this podcast is running out of steam. I used to listen to the full podcast but soon found that segments lacked substance or any valuable information.. so I started listening to the segments that piqued my interest but now those feel stock too (Nothing in the Matthew Perry segment that hasn’t been said 1000 times, that segment was clickbait). If you watch the Australian traitors, they have one contestant on it who is never featured in the edits at all other than when there is a group and he’s there. He’s just edited out of the show even though he’s in it

I’ve been reading your 3rd one Richard. I wondered how they’d go if you weren’t so very well known to everyone. I have two small theories. Like it or not, everyone hears you reading it to them, like you’re sitting next to the bed reading them a good night story. You are, after all, the most reassuring person on television. You could be on edit soz: HIGNFY where where Christmas is canceled, Wimbledon is knocked down for scrap and WW3 looks likely, and we’d come away completely unfazed and entertained. My second theory is that you are Joyce Meadowcroft, give or take. Not that I’ve read the 4th book yet, but it’s on my table.
I definitely think him being a known name has helped sell his books, no doubt in that. It's unvoidable. As for WILTY, I'd love to hear Bob Mortimer explaining a cancelled Xmas to David Mitchell. He might finally break Mitchell's brain.
I agree that click bait is annoying, and we all fall for it like “Matthew Perry & The Dark Hollywood Underbelly” which isn’t mentioned until 39 minutes into the podcast.
Yet it is mentioned, which means it isn't clickbait. One of the aspects with clickbait is that the title/thumb isn't discussed or is very misleading. That's not the case here. 🙂
