Rizaldar Rasheed Yes, it makes an extremely good 8 speed automatic that a lot of car manufacturers use, from the Trailhawk SUV (707 hp) to sedans like M5 and other 5 series.
Jace MK7 Bruh what is he talking about. My GTI is 3200 pounds with me in it and makes 520-530 whp and 430 + whtq on kill mode it’ll take out a tuned hellcat making 700 whp easy.
I'm in the States and bought a 2019 Stinger GTS last week. That's the enthusiast-spec edition with only 800 made world-wide. Bright orange and rear-wheel drive. Absolutely the most exciting and pleasurable to drive car I've owned. After 10 years of German cars I can tell you this GTS absolutely puts them to shame! And it's a looker... no other vehicle I've owned has garnered a fraction of the attention. Had a stranger yell at me the other day "I LOVE YOUR CAR!". Pretty sure that's not a usual reaction to a Kia...

Stinger is supposed to be a GT car, not a track car. And considering it keeps up with basically the best hot hatch VW has in terms of handling I think it is a big success.
Well it's the best hot hatch VW is willing to give us. I genuinely have no idea why they keep detuning the R seemingly every model year while increasing the performance of the GTI. Almost no reason to go with the R these days.
With Kia putting out a whole new GT-Line for the 2020 year, they are really headed in the right direction for the cars they make: fast, luxury, with a low price tag. Grand Tourer describes this the best, great observation.

These are the exact 2 cars I looked at last January when I wanted/needed to change my car. Finally got the Stinger GT Limited with the red interior. Just awesome! The single downside on this car is the rear visibility....which is close to non existent. And in the winter season, the rear camera gets filled with crap and calcium (I’m in Quebec) so needs to be cleaned pretty much everyday, if I want to use it. My wife’s golf cam is hidden under the logo....always clean. Awesome review/ comparison. Keep up the good (really good!) work. Cheers!
I love the camera behind logo design, so cool. One time I was pulling out of a parking lot and one lady told me that there may be something wrong with my car since the logo was flipped up. I kindly told her that is was the back up camera. I have the sorento I can tell you that the rear cam does badly even in the rain, let alone snow and salt.
@@IReahpZz Yeah Kia and Hyundai are known to lower their power and 0-60 times. I own an i30N and advertised power is 271bhp, I get like 285bhp. Also 0-60 as a result is under 6secs, not 6.1secs.
Jakub continues to make me feel good about my 2013 base model manual gti purchase with comments like, “I have more fun in a manual gti than a manual r.” Bought it with 22 miles on it and still love driving it 80K miles later.
I think he is saying that they go from 0-100 at pretty much the same measure of time (~4.6 seconds). AKA - The Golf R and the Stinger GT have similar acceleration.
Ivo Bosnjak that´s may be right for the european Version of the Golf R but this is the north american Version and those cars do not have to meet the Euro Emission Standars. Just have a look to the new BMW M340i they already tested. The Euro Version has slighty less Horsepower due to the Particle Filter. The US/Can Version does not have such a filter.
Markus Z It’s the exact same engine, Volkswagen just shifted from metric horsepower to mechanical horsepower across the lineup. The 1.8 TSI also went from 170 to 167 rated.
I think the two of your together are so much better than just the one of you. You guys have great energy. It’s nice seeing friends discuss cars and not have the typical “my friend is an idiot and wrong” top gear relationship that most channels have. I loved when he said “Yuri pronounces Toyota wrong, we are working on it”. It’s funny
I test drove the Stinger and with my back problems, sitting that low in the car would have been an issue some days. So, I ended up with the Golf R. Love driving it every day!! Getting 30+ mpg on the highway is just a plus!
I'd still trust that transmission over the Golf's. I don't hate on Golf or VW - but neither is famous for reliability. Modern models, I mean. So you know, if I'd be a Golf kind of person, I'd definitely go manual. Just one less thing to have trouble with.
So weird as an Australian watching this on a Friday morning. Normally it's late Friday evening or Saturday morning. Thank you for the hospitality USA! Yes I know you guys are Canadian.
I own a Stinger GT and I absolutely love it. I get looks, thumbs up, and compliments every day. Yesterday, a guy in a 911 Turbo gave me a thumbs up. Im in a Kia and the guy in the Porsche likes my car. That’s awesome! Mine is badge swapped so people always ask what it is. I love it haha. It’s a great car to own.
@PUMBAANA the regular GT? or GTS, GT1 or GT2? I always get Red... but wondered how the leather in Red would match the red paint? So I guess it looks good!
I’ve always been a Golf R head...but that Stinger 🧐 I didn’t realize all the amenities it had with the same practicality. Take my money (or the lack thereof)
I like it for understated styling with dual clutch option and adaptive dampers which the direct competitors don’t offer. Don’t always need a manual or harsh suspension imo. But they’re way too expensive for sure
@@gsjourney3054 Because compared to it's other direct awd competitors (Focus RS, WRX STI), it's reliability is pretty much on par, but it offers something a little different than those with much better refinement and a more comfortable, almost luxury interior (especially relative to the other two). I also appreciate the more understated styling. Sure, the average Subaru is more reliable than the average VW, but the STI isn't exactly a regular subaru. Plus they haven't always been 50k until recently with the last update. To be fair though, if I was forced into an automatic, I'd take the stinger all day long, no question. However, I'm a manual guy, so I went with a used golf R. 100k on the odometer and no issues at all so far.
@@kevinandrew_ that guy was tripping with the statement crappy vw reliability, in europe golf is the most stollen vehicle, especialy mark4 with 1.9 diesel.
The KIA Stinger doesn't use ZF transmissions , they use Hyundai's home made transmissions, Hyundai is.one of the few who makes their own transmissions.
I would love to see a 3-6 year review to see which car held up better. And which one was less expensive to maintain. Not just with these two cars but others as well
My wife's car is a 2012 VW GTI Autobahn with the DSG transmission that we purchased new in October of 2011. With just over 75k miles the GTI has no rattles and drives great. I keep up with all the recommended services. There were a few issues around 40k miles with a failed high pressure fuel pump and two failed ignition coils within months of each other. My wife wants a new car and we have been looking at vehicles since the June time frame. I remember looking at the Kia Optima back in the 2011 before we purchased the GTI. The Optima felt like a tin can when you closed the doors and the GTI had a more upscale feeling in the cockpit. My wife transitioning from a 2002 BMW 525i (manual transmission) that was fully loaded with sport package to the GTI. We purchased the vehicle new and while not a power house at 189 hp it drove and handled great for a sedan of its size. After watching this review I thought we would consider the Stinger GT2 but after reading Car and Driver's 30,000 mile review we have removed it from the contenders. Here is the link : www.caranddriver.com/reviews/a22993952/kia-stinger-gt-reliability-long-term-update/ . Their car might be a fluke but rattles and the brake rotor issue is something that I take into consideration. There is more to a vehicle then just performance of the vehicle, it is the total package. Dependability, reliability, fit and finish, and how the vehicle will hold up in the long term. We would go with the Golf R. While the looks are understated and we wish the 2 door variant was still manufactured for the United States the Golf R gets our vote. While not in the same category or price point I placed the 2020 BMW M2C as a contender but my wife being the frugal one decided she did not want to spend the 64k for the M2C.
Best warranty in the business!! Me and my co-worker have Stingers. He has over 30k miles on his... he got it last year. (he took it on 4 trips to Maine, Florida, Mississippi, and Montanna from Michigan). He loves it and he has not had any issues with it at all. I only have just broken in mine... 6k miles. MPG is pretty damn good too. I average 24.8mpg. And that is with once in a while flooring it.
@@adriankschan94 nonsense. Matt really wobbles that console with force. Kia warranty far better than VW. Plastics in the Golf are really not great, lower down and if its anything like the two VW Passats I had as company cars dashboard rattles will irritate. Clutch failures, wiring loom issues, turbo swap, electric brake issues all on the VWs I had. All other makes I had as company cars sailed past 130,000 miles on the same clutch. So disagree through experience.
Stinger is a 4 doorr coupe and should be tested vs BMW 4 series Grand Coupe, Audi 5 series 4 door and what ever is the Merc version of it. Or call them all but Merc a hatchbacks because they have a 5th door?
@@jimjames5312 true that but Kia is know to deliver value and to want to be a giant slayer. But it is still wrong choice. Golf vs Ceed or Proceed makes sense and there is as well price difference there. Same class different price is mother of all comparations while it shows you what you get or don't for the extra money.
Mercedes doesn't really have an equal, maybe a base CLS class or nice C class? Their only liftback sedan is the AMG GT 4 door that starts at almost 3 times the price of a Stinger.
I don't blame you. I get the reason to buy a golf r... But why buy a stinger over a Mustang gt or dodge charger? I get its great buuuuut... A charger and Mustang will still be just as functional... The golf r is something that over performs yet is great day to day and more.
@@V1ralB1ack Neither of them would be as functional. Definitely not a Mustang, which is a coupe. And the Charger has a trunk which has a lot less cargo capacity than the hatch on the Stinger. Especially with the seats folded down. Also the Stinger is a lot more of a comfortable and premium daily driver than either of the other two.
@@ZS-xi4xk I mentioned the charger and mustang because the stinger is between being fast and a family car. If you're buying the stinger for the speed then just get a mustang but if you want it to also carry 4 people get the charger but you can't honestly tell me it's more comfortable then the charger. It LOOKS more comfy but sit in it and it's not more comfy than both. I've fit a 55in tv in a civic and I can easily do it in a mustang. How much trunk space do you need? And if you're talking a car that is all you really need it's the golf r. The stinger is unnecessary. Competitive and new but unnecessary.
I've driven the Stinger a few weeks ago. It was almost like an Audi (since a Audi & BMW Guy worked together on this). The engine felt very throttled to me. Like there where about at least 100 HP waiting to be woken up some day.
poooooow Kia made 420 hp version out of an old press car with a tune and some minor part swaps (intakes etc). So yes you are right this engine has room to grow
There's actually a video showcasing how with a few upgrades, the stinger can unlock a good amount of power just from a few bolt ons. So you're not wrong
btw with an OBDeleven module, you can adjust the golf R's lane keep assist to keep you on rails. huge improvement, lets you do a bunch of other tweaks as well. however it won't activate until 41mph and requires a mail in camera tweak for lower speeds than that
I test drove both back to back, and it wasn't even close for me... I love my Stinger GT2! Golf R was missing cooled seats, moonroof, heated steering wheel and the seats weren't nearly as comfortable. The driving position in the Stinger is absolutely perfect! The sound system was also a lot better in the Stinger, as was the infotainment system. I was ecstatic when I saw this video, and I had a feeling Jakub and Yuri would both choose the Stinger when automatic. As always, great video guys!
This is why I think the price of the Golf R is a joke when compared to the Stinger. It should be so much cheaper to manufacture than the stinger considering the engine is much smaller, has significantly less cabin amenities, and is just a smaller car overall.
Oneill5491 Agreed, the value of the Golf R doesn’t come close to the Stinger. A GTI has much better value from VW even though it’s nowhere near as fast
You can't custom order Golf R Spektrum colors anymore, since about 2 months ago. I was getting ready to sign the papers when they said that's cancelled, so I walked. Down to Telsa or Stinger now.
yeah its pretty sad, i heard they were also dropping the 6yr/72k warranty as well. only option is to buy a 2019 golf R and get it wrapped if you want that color and warranty. it would still run you like $42k at least, not worth it imo
@@dorkultra Golf is in for model change by the end of the year thats why they reduce color options so they dont have to take back leased ones in a stupid color
My uncle just brought a stinger Gt same color after driving it tonight wow it's really fun to drive and the power it has puts a mustang RT Challenger and Camaro out of shame.
Bro just earlier today I got to my car while at a shopping center and someone did a hit and run on the rear driver's side bumper (not a Stinger but still). Like wtf is wrong with people!?
Yep, just test drove a loaded Stinger GT2 today and the ventilated seats worked better than any other vehicle I've owned with ventilated seats. My butt was icy within a couple min of turning them on.
My car buying decision came down to these two cars. Unfortunately, none of the Kia dealers in the Boston area would let me test drive a Stinger, so the decision to buy a Golf R was an easy one. I still get calls from Kia dealers trying to sell me a Stinger, which is curious because they didn't seem all that interested when I was actually looking to buy. I'm super happy with my 2019 Golf R!
Congrats. You made the right call. I have a 17 golf r, love the thing. These two made some pretty poor comments/comparisons in this video. Such as complaining that the golf r wouldnt oversteer...you CAN force it to, however oversteering through a corner may be (subjectively) more fun, it is slower though. There is also not much that can be done with the stinger to really start brining more power out beyond a basic tune and bolt ons. 450 hp or so is where the stinger will be stuck before you start going into the danger zone. Meanwhile the golf r can hit 450 with a stage 2 type setup and tune, still able to go with a swapped turbo for 550+ if you want. Seeing as the R is also MUCH lighter than the stinger, that power does you much more in terms of performance numbers.
100% agree, since the golf itself is so common most people don’t notice that extra difference with the R compared to a GTI in terms of looks so it blends in too much. That’s why I’ve always said that if you want a Golf R for its driving pleasure and want to stand out, get an Audi S3.
In case anyone is concerned with fuel economy; From fueleconomy.gov: Golf R MPG: 23city/30 highway 26 MPG combined. Kia Stinger GT MPG: 17city /25 highway Combined 20MPG mpg. 6 mpg real world economy in my mind is a big difference. that is $5,000 savings over 10 year ownership
@jamiecivic I have bought and owned all my automobiles new and kept them for 10 -15 years. Makes MUCH better financial sense. (If you maintain them... and don't care about having a new car every few years.)
@jamiecivic As I said, I always keep my cars 10 years + either way assuming you trade it in, if you look for a more efficient car next time the point is the same. 6mpg over 10 years is 5 grand in your pocket.
I may be alone in this but I dont really want my back end to kick out if im driving around town on a hustle. To be completely honest I know how to handle a slide but id rather just have the car stick and go than have it kick out.
it's because their in race mode, if you have the car set to eco or normal it won't kick out almost at all, and if u go into custom and set everything to race and put ur AWD to normal it'll give u the sportyness without the loose rear end
I have a 2016 Golf R manual. In stock form, it didn't feel as fast as the numbers indicated. Fortunately a ready solution was available at the dealer where I got the car. Two weeks after taking delivery, I returned to the dealer's tuner shop and, an hour later, I drove away with 62 APR Stage 1 horsepower magically added. The difference was almost startling! Two years later, I returned for an APR Stage 2, supporting mods, and an upgraded clutch. The car is now crazy fast, but still very easy to drive as a daily. There is a Stage 3 available but any more HP would be too much (if there is such a thing). I don't think that kind of aftermarket support is available for the Stinger but I could be wrong.
Stinger is so much fun! The automatic stop start is not that much annoying. If you push the brake pedal gently just enough to stop the car it doesn’t turn the engine off. It only does it when you really push the brake.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO!! I was legit just considering slightly older models of both of these!! If money isn’t the issue I’m probably getting the stinger but if my budget ends up being slightly tighter, I can go back a little further with the GOLF R. Great job guys!!
you can get any brand new GT trim way under sticker price. There are two stinger GT2 with -8k marked off of sticker already in a couple dealerships local to me. It just take some searching and negotiation. Truth is, as much of a good car it is, its struggling to sell, especially the GT trim. I am just waiting for my lease to run out in a couple of months so I can purchase one!
With the Golf R you wont have any warranty after 1/2 years. On the other hand you can buy an 3 year old Stinger and have 4 Trouble free years. Take that into consideration.
That's only for ROW cars. ROW gets memory seats, port injection and more horsepower as well. NA is a different beast. Rs are low volume here so we don't get sunroofs, interior options or any of that other stuff. If we did, the car would range from a little cheaper to a lot more expensive.
I got a 2018 Stinger, and it's great. So I prefer the Stinger... haha. Plus I did a badge swap to the South Korean original badges... makes it look even better.
KIA Stinger all day. Much more car all around for the money... Let alone the fit & finish, tolerance levels, build quality etc... The Stinger tops it all over the vw.
I think one thing that is underlying that you didn't touch on is the overall fit and finish that makes a golf feel much more luxurious once you get over the extra bling that the Kia has. I suppose it really depends on what approach blows your hair back. Refined or Flash.
I'd go with the stinger! Beautiful car. But, at the end of the day, I got myself a Velsoter N performance. Price is insane for what you get. Just need to find the right dealer.
nope, not with golf r. also I don't think we have the same specs in north america and europe. we can't get the dynamic turning signal even if we'd like to pay extra. no sunroof, no new infotainment with gesture control, all that

Cheers!
Ya , funny they didn't mention the visibility part of the 2 cars its actually an important aspect.

Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪
The golf R has 300HP and 400NM here 😉
Stinger I'd a bit underrated. Really makes about 400 bhp
Bafy Do the North American specs have less hp? Or is the difference just because of the way we calculate the hp?
@@IReahpZz Yeah Kia and Hyundai are known to lower their power and 0-60 times. I own an i30N and advertised power is 271bhp, I get like 285bhp. Also 0-60 as a result is under 6secs, not 6.1secs.

Golf R power numbers are slightly down to meet the new EURO standards for emissions. Nothing they could do about it.
Yep, easy and not too expensive to get a considerable horsepower bump
Ivo Bosnjak that´s may be right for the european Version of the Golf R but this is the north american Version and those cars do not have to meet the Euro Emission Standars. Just have a look to the new BMW M340i they already tested. The Euro Version has slighty less Horsepower due to the Particle Filter. The US/Can Version does not have such a filter.

It's not a ZF auto. Hyundai Kia developed this one themselves.
I was really trying to look this up because I didn't think ZF made it. I have a G80 Sport and they have the same power train.
I'd still trust that transmission over the Golf's. I don't hate on Golf or VW - but neither is famous for reliability. Modern models, I mean. So you know, if I'd be a Golf kind of person, I'd definitely go manual. Just one less thing to have trouble with.

TTRS give a try
Warren Beres I’ve considered the TT RS but I need that 4 door practicality. I wish they sold the RS3 hatch in North American, it would be perfect!

@@V1ralB1ack Neither of them would be as functional. Definitely not a Mustang, which is a coupe. And the Charger has a trunk which has a lot less cargo capacity than the hatch on the Stinger. It LOOKS more comfy but sit in it and it's not more comfy than both. I've fit a 55in tv in a civic and I can easily do it in a mustang. How much trunk space do you need? And if you're talking a car that is all you really need it's the golf r. The stinger is unnecessary. Competitive and new but unnecessary.

btw with an OBDeleven module, you can adjust the golf R's lane keep assist to keep you on rails. huge improvement, lets you do a bunch of other tweaks as well. however it won't activate until 41mph and requires a mail in camera tweak for lower speeds than that
I test drove both back to back, and it wasn't even close for me...

I'll go with Stinger... it looks damn hot
You say that now, until you get passed by a modified Gold R.
@@Wayzor_ and that modified Golf R gets passed by a modified Stinger
I love my Golf R, the only thing that lets it down is actually the look, it just doesn't look sporty or mean, but everything else makes up for it!
100% agree, since the golf itself is so common most people don’t notice that extra difference with the R compared to a GTI in terms of looks so it blends in too much. That’s why I’ve always said that if you want a Golf R for its driving pleasure and want to stand out, get an Audi S3.
In case anyone is concerned with fuel economy; From fueleconomy.gov:
Golf R MPG: 23city/30 highway 26 MPG combined.
Kia Stinger GT MPG: 17city /25 highway Combined 20MPG mpg.

But you can carry more people in stinger comfortably
@jamiecivic As I said, I always keep my cars 10 years + either way assuming you trade it in, if you look for a more efficient car next time the point is the same. 6mpg over 10 years is 5 grand in your pocket.
