    Thank you so much. I stumbled upon your twist and rip video the day I was creating my dreads. Now I've been looking high and low for info on new growth and ended up revisiting your channel. I have to say your videos are so clear and informative and do such a great job answering all my questions. You are definitely my new favorite dreadlock resource =)

    This was very reassuring. As are all your advice videos but as I knotted my sections with backcombing, twist and rip and crocheting (and continued to crochet them every few months or so afterwards) the notion of waiting for the rest to lock itself is unfamiliar territory.
    Now I shall lay down my hook and play the waiting game...

    I'm so happy you exist!! I watched your videos all the time and I find them so informative and helpful. I started my journey about a month ago, and was really concerned in the beginning with how they looked. Now, thanks to your advice, I mostly just try to leave them be and let them do their own thing and I find they are actually progressing much faster! Especially a few in the back from sleeping. I'm so excited to see how they turn out when they mature, but you have helped me get over being so self conscious about how they look in the meantime. Thanks! :)

    Thank you for this video. I did the twist and tare with the back comb to start mine and then crocheted the loose hair in, but the loose hairs always seemed to fall back out in no time, so I was daily crocheting and got tired of it and left it alone. Seems my dreads just like to be left alone they are dreading on their own so much better and people were calling me crazy when I told them my new growth were dreading on their own. My dreads are 7 months old and I do have the bumps and loops but it seems they also are taking care of themselves better then when I was crocheting. So thank you for letting me know I am not crazy and my dreads are doing what they are supposed to on their own.

    I think it depends on hair type and its corresponding "behaviour". Even though I have kinky hair, my hair would never lock on its own, or even with palm rolling. I have to crochet my dread (interlocking) to encourage them into dreadlocks. I go back to my hair stylist every 6 to 9 weeks to have the new growth interlocked again. I've tried freeforming and all that before... it doesn't work, because my hair doesn't ever lock naturally. I even tried locking two dreads I had that I felt were too small on their own. That doesn't work either. I had to have them professionally knitted together... after about 6 months to a year of waiting for them to get cosy together on their own... Go figure!

    If I don't twist, rubberband or cuff new hair growth, it'll start to Congo with other dreads. My dreads are almost 2 months old. They're pretty nicely knotted. I've had 3 humongous Congo dreads....2 of them I had to cut. I would recommend doing everything you can to keep new growth neatly compartmentalized or you'll end up with congo dreads that you'll have to cut apart.

  • @Baergen.
    @Baergen. 10 років тому

    I have been interlocking my hair for 14 months and I think in order to keep my dreads going the same Im going to have to continuously interlock the new growth to keep the lock looking the same, if I let the new growth grow out then my hair will just be straight coming out, I think the natural locking process for my hair would be a lot longer because I have strait hair naturally. The mature dread thing you said, I bet at that point your hair type changes from straight hair to naturally dread making hair since its probably been almost 2 years for the dreads to fully mature. Great video as always man!

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  10 років тому

      If you stopped interlocking the hair, it would be able to lock naturally, but it would take a while. You'd need to stop interlocking it and just leave it, so there would be some time where they were just growing out. The texture would likely differ slightly from interlock, but they wouldn't run the risk of thinning out - which is a risk with long term interlocking.

    • @Baergen.
      @Baergen. 10 років тому

      Yea I agree, if you over do it when interlocking you can definitely thin the roots out because there isnt any hair left to flip the root. I think after I hit 2 years im going to let it freeform for a while and see what it does

    Hey i love you and you're super cute c:
    My dreads are relatively new, maybe a little less than a month old, so I'm not really that worried about it, but some of my dreads look somewhat braided (I used the twist/pull method), and I just wanted to know when they'll start looking normal o.o or will I have to redo them? I know you used a different method so I understand if you don't have an answer but you seem like you know everything about dreads so I figured you'd be the best person to ask ouo

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  9 років тому +1

      Joley Poland With T&R there is a lot of repeated motion while you're doing it - and if you don't let the twist completely relax between each new 'pull' you can end up with a braided pattern getting formed in. Young dreadlocks will loosen up before they properly tighten and in that process will generally loose the braided pattern.

    Hey LazyDreads, I'm considering dreadlocks and I'm pretty much sold. On the fence between twist'n'rip and neglect but my parents would probably be more comfortable with neglect as it takes more time to look dread-ish. Most of my hair is about 10 inches and very similar to yours was in your timeline video. Any recommendations for neglect or should I make a stronger argument toward twist'n'rip?

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  10 років тому

      Most parents side towards T&R or backcomb rather than neglect because they're more predictable and less messy / they can look dreadlock-like from the start whereas neglect will look like just a mess for quite a while. The choice between T&R and neglect is something I think you need to decide on your own as they're rather different processes with different pros & cons so it depends how those pros & cons are applicable to your situation.

    I don't speak a good english, so i'll try to express myself correctly (please try to understand ^^). I spend some months not doing my root, but my roots began to get mixed, and my dreads turned to be only one enormous dread at my head! so I had to go to a professional to separate them and since then i've been remaking my roots with crochet needle. But i can't stand doing it anymore, how do i let my roots dreadlock itself and my dreads do not mix and become only one?

    Sure coulda used this 6 months ago lol. Great video,as always. You're the dreadie guru! I do have a question though
    Question: I've been noticing weak spots. What do you suppose that could be from? I have three possibilities in mind. 1. Didn't rip enough when t&rd 2. wearing a ponty tail (my hair is still a bit short so I donno if that causes some pulling 3. using the crochet hook very briefly (once or twice a month) for the first 1-4 months. I'm at a year and 2 months now, so it came as a bit of a shock. Had to trim a couple :\

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  10 років тому

      Out of the 3, I would say that the ponytail is what I would consider the most likely culprit. The other 2 may however have played a role.

    This video was very helpful. Thank you.
    I was at the YMCA a few weeks ago swimming. I was wondering if the chlorine is helpful in the locking process or is it harmful?
    Also when I was in the sauna I stood up and got a couple dreads caught by a sprinkler head. It ripped a dread in half and ripped another one fully out. Least to say it was very painful and bloody. I remedied the situation by twisting a ripping the damaged dreads together along with all the straight hair I acquired from the painful experience. So far so good. The two dreads seem to be turning into one. Just wanted to share that

    If I get my dreadlocks crochet once or twice when they are new does this mean the roots will never mature naturally?
    I would love to get it done just to tidy them up a little bit but don't want to be constantly having to get it done for them to look tidy.

    I have a few questions. One, my dreadlocks are going to be a year old in June and I still have to rip them apart from each other on a regular basis, especially after I wash. I'm worried that continuously tearing them apart from each other at the roots will stop or slow down the locking process.
    Two, I have a LOT of loose hairs that managed to escape the dreads all over my head, in some spots they're in clumps (I imagine this is due to my lazy sectioning). I want to cut them short and crochet them into dreads nearby. Is this necessary? Right now they're as long as the dreads themselves. Will they eventually join the dreads on their own? I don't mind a few loose hairs but I really don't like the way it is now.
    I started with the TnR method. Thank you!

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  10 років тому +2

      You will always have to separate the dreadlocks. As they get older the frequency at which the separating is required will reduce, but to stop them combining, you will always have to separate them.All locks are going to have loose hair. The amount of loose hair is dependant on the age of the locks and also the time of year. But even the most mature locks will have some loose hair. Hairs are constantly getting pulled about during day to day life, some knots get pulled out, some hairs break, some new hairs grow. Even once they're mature, there will always be hairs that are still at different stages. If you leave them, overtime they will knot together and either form new dreads or join with existing dreads. For this you'll want to not cut them. Cutting the hairs short will stop them from being able to lock themselves and you would have to wait for the hairs to grow out again before they'd become useful - and there would be an awkward phase where you are stuck with random clumps of short hair sticking out. If you want to crochet them you can cut them, but crocheting them away will mean the process will start up again, the number of loose hairs building up from nothing and they will need crocheting back and back as there won't be enough loose hairs to knot together by themselves.

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  9 років тому +1

      art by rxch Depends on what you're wanting to do to the hair - if you want to keep it twisted, then it would need retwisting as it grew, but if you wanted to get the new growth to start freeforming as it grew out, then you wouldn't want to keep retwisting it.
      I'm not sure what is meant by keeping dreads fresh... other than keeping them clean/fresh.

    Hi Lazy Dreads! I have some questions, and I was hoping you could help me out. I've had my dreads for around 5 months and I want to go with the neglect method to deal with the new growth, but I'm afraid my dreads will congo together cause I already have very few dreads, and I don't need two of them merging into one. I've been doing the root flipping thing under the recommendation of a friend with dreadlocks to keep them from congoing, but I've heard that doing this is a BIG NO NO. How exactly should I go on with the neglect method to avoid congos and keep my dreads in good shape? I'm relatively new to your channel, so I haven't searched thoroughly for a video on this subject. Sorry if I'm asking something you've already answered

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  10 років тому

      NicholasWaits94 Hi Nicholas! Root flipping I certainly would recommend - it does provide temporary tightness at the roots, but in doing so it splits the root and twists the two halves. While the halves are twisted like that they can't lock up naturally and can end up growing out split into two dreads. Leaving the roots to themselves for long enough will result in them locking by themselves. It takes a while so patience is needed, but once they've started, they'll continue forever. To stop them from congoing you just need to separate regularly. Separating is an important and often quite time consuming process with young dreadlocks, but as they get older the amount required will lessen. Keeping on top of the separating will stop them from knotting together.

    • @NicholasWaits94
      @NicholasWaits94 10 років тому

      So for the first two months, I tried to leave the roots by themselves, but they seemed to be getting flat, which is why I decided to go for the root flipping thing. How could I stop this flattening thing from happening?
      Also, as I was separating, I noticed few tense hairs that seemed to be between dreads. Even though I pulled the dreads several times away from each other, they remained tense. I was tempted to cut, but then I doubted cause I'm not sure if this hairs feel tense cause they're congoing, or if it is possible for hairs within one section to be attached to both the root and the dread from that section.
      I really hope I've made myself clear, english is not my first language. sorry if not, and thanks in advance! You've been of great help

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  10 років тому

      Yes the roots of dreadlocks that are only 2 months old are going to be flat... they're going to need many more months before they become strong and more rounded - but root flipping is not going to allow that to happen faster and will instead likely increase the time it takes for the roots to become strong and tight on their own.
      If a hair goes from the root of one dreadlock into the body of another dreadlock then it will need to be separated in order to avoid the dreadlocks congoing together.

    • @NicholasWaits94
      @NicholasWaits94 10 років тому

      okay, so there's nothing I can do about the flat dreads but waiting? I'm supposed to just let them grow and they will get rounder by themselves eventually?

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  10 років тому +1

      Young dreadlocks are soft. Soft things, when compressed, will remain flattened. A soft young dreadlock has no reason to return to a rounded shape on it's own. As the dreadlocks get older, they get tighter, less compressible. They tighten from all sides, becoming rounded.

    Lazy Dreads my dreadlocks aren't even a week old yet and I have washed my hair once. I did the twist and rip method without crochet. I've done lots of Palm rolling too. I've got natural thick curly/wavy hair/frizz too. I've tried a little bit of aloe gel to use on the dreads. That's helped a little bit with the frizz. But my main thing is when I started these they weren't an inch to my roots. Maybe an inch and a half or little longer. Now I've got non dreaded hair from my roots to the dreads that's about a 2-2and a half in gap. do I need to fix that or will that be dreaded up on its own naturally? also I've seen another video out there where someone was talking about how crucial it is to rub the roots daily. Is this really true for the newbies on dreadlocks? Thank you so much. I love all your videos. All of your videos help all of us out with so much information. Much appreciated. :)

      I just palm rolled often when I started out. Mainly to keep my dreads sectioned the way I wanted. The new hairs will cling the the chosen dread you've palm rolled and will eventually make its way in there. As far as messing with or rubbing the roots daily.... I don't think it's necessary. I don't believe it will help in anyway really. I've had my dreads for two years now, and started them the same way you did. So take it or leave it 😊 good luck to you!!

    So wait....my hair is about 6 months old (maybe a little more than 6 months, maybe like 6.4 months old) and my hair grows incredibly fast like crazy fast. I feel like I haven't lost ANY length, but I know they're tightening up. What if my hair grows faster than the speed at which it locks? that's my biggest concern

    • @LazyDreads

      Liza Rome As long as the hair is kept in a dreadlock-friendly condition - e.g not overly conditioned / soft, then it'll lock up whatever free length is available.

    How long have you had your dreads? Also the person that started mine a year an a half ago used the interlock method only now am I learning that interlock isn't the best thing for your hair, if I completly stop interlocking them will I still get locks by jut neglect? Thanks!

      Mac_Mo_Dollaz 86 months: ua-cam.com/video/nRK8ms_gjtgI/v-deo.htmlf you leave them long enough, the new growth will lock itself - but it'll take a while for the roots to be able to start doing it.

    Not having a go, you just got me thinking - if the hair you originally dreaded all those years ago has been chopped off, then can you really say your dreads are X months old? Technically thats just the amount of months you've had dreads for? Like the hair knotted up in mine can't be older than about 4 years cause I last cut it 3 years ago and it'll only be that old at the very tips.

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  10 років тому

      That's an argument that could certainly be made!

    • @LazyDreads

      Although simply counting from day 1 onwards is certainly the least complicated way to go about it. If the age was instead counted from the oldest existing knot it would become rather more difficult. For instance if you started locks and they were initially 30cm long, you then grew them for 3 years and they became 60cm long - that would be counted as 2 years old as everything there had been locked for 2 years. However you could then cut 29cm of hair off and still be left with 1 cm of original length at the tips - would they still be counted as 2 years old? how about if 31cm got trimmed off? ... meanwhile the person who has asked "how old are your locks?" has gotten bored and weirded out by the complexity of the reply ^^

    So with my backcombed dreads I wouldn't need to take care of the new growth?

      Rico Chissay It will form new dreadlock length by itself.

    do i leave the elastic bands in or do i take them out ounce im done or leave them in and can i wash the first day or wait a week

      +Bizzy Nasty Take them out asap. I've had elastic bands on my dreadlings for 2 days after having done them and they started to get absorbed into the knots. it actually was hard trying to remove them even just after 2 days.

    One question: Before back coming, was your hair curly or straight as straw?

    if my hair gets knots very easily . do u tink my hair cud turn into dreads in a months time

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  10 років тому

      I think 1 month is an overly optimistic timeframe for anyone - regardless of how knotty the hair gets. They'll likely take longer than that... in most cases a lot longer.

    does this work with micro locks?

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  10 років тому

      I myself do not have any experience with micro locs. If left alone long enough the hair will freeform at the root, however with micro locs (since there are so many) it may be quite difficult to stop them from locking into each other if they're left to freeform.

      What about crochet dreads?

    • @XFableAssassinX
      @XFableAssassinX 10 років тому

      Does this rule also for crochet dreads?

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  10 років тому

      It depends if you crochet the roots or not.

    • @XFableAssassinX
      @XFableAssassinX 10 років тому

      No i do not crochet my dreads

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  10 років тому +1

      If the roots are left alone then they will develop naturally. If the roots are crocheted tight then they won't be able to develop in the same way and so will need to be maintained again later with a crochet hook - or left until the roots loosen up enough to begin developing naturally again.

      Lazy Dreads i guess Twist and Rip...

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  10 років тому

      By attempting to "rip" at the root level, you'd be trying to rip through the already locked section above it.

    • @Colin_Barnes
      @Colin_Barnes 10 років тому

      yeah you explained it perfectly in the video, but i thought you didn't get the TnR being short for twist and rip but yeah... you obviously did :-/ nevermind, akward misunderstanding on my part. great vid btw
