    I’m so glad I watched this i literally just washed for the first time after 6 days and they got super frizzy and kinda loose so I got scared and started crocheting them too be tight again than stumbled upon this video and now I’m so much more understanding the frizz is normal as for the little loose hairs

    I've just started putting small dreads in my hair after dying and washing it last night and I was very curious about how often to wash them. Luckily, I wash my hair maybe once or twice a week, sometimes longer because I have no motivation whatsoever so I should be okay. This video was really helpful so thank you :)

    I just did my first wash 4 days after starting my new short hair (3 inches) backcombed dreads. I used a hair net while getting my hair wet, then remove it to apply/massage a teaspoon of dreads shampoo on my scalp and then, placed back during rinsing. So far soo good, baby dreads still on and the best of all, is that is was able to stay under the water and relax for a while, without worrying too much about my young dreads falling apart. Best feeling ever after the first wash!

    Thank you so much. My dreads are just over a 1 month old. You answer every question I needed answered. I wash my hair every 7-10 days. I never really washed my hair a lot in the first place. I have naturally coarse, curly, frizzy hair. So it's about what I washed it to begin with. The Frizz is horrible at this point. I thought man it seems after I wash my hair my dreads are a lot loser and falling out, but this video was point on and helped me so much. Thanks for taking the time do help people like me with their questions.

    I have not washed my hair with shampoo for about 3 and a half months now, instead i have used cider vinegar and salt water. My hair and head is a lot healthier than it has ever been and dreading is easy, even though my hair is only 5 inches.

    The sebaceous glands (oil producing glands) may be a bit unbalanced when first starting dreads as I'm now noticing, you are right about setting a pattern. It's like eating and sleeping, patterns create balance.

    I got my hair twisted last Sunday (the 5th of February) and I am about to wash it for the first time today (the 13th of February). I am a little wary but from what I am finding online i should be good. Going to have a cap on while i rinse and shampoo them out as I read that that should help keep them in place. Thank you for the video the information was very helpful! 2 and a half year old video so you may not see this but Keep up the good work brother you got one more subscriber now.

    Hell yeah you just answered all the questions I had in mind thanks bro I just started my locs 6 days ago on honestly on the 4th day they were super itchy I had sweat and oils built up scalp was red and irritated so I washed I was scared to wash cus they told me to wait one week but I did it anyway they frizzed up a little and got very few loose hairs but they didn't unravel any advice on maintenance? I plan to shower every 4 days after the shower I patted and blew my dreads with the blow dryer untill dry should I palm roll or just let it be? My hair is naturally really thin and straight

    I've been prepping my hair for the last 2 months - I'm able to go 7-8 days between washes (super fine and thin hair) - I also haven't used shampoo or conditioner for over three months. I've been researching and waiting for the best time to do my dreads for over a decade, and it's finally going to happen next weekend! *happy dance*
    Just wanted to say thanks for all these vids, as they have been entertaining and reinforcing the positive information I have found (ie. not using wax, using baking soda and acv for deep cleans, etc.) online and through other friends that have had dreads.
    I doubt there is anyone more prepared for this new hair life!
    Have a great day! :D

    • @sarahhicks8967

      Oh... I meant I wash it with not shampoo and conditioner - have yet to find a good soap, so in the mean time, I am using dish soap.
      I have baby fine hair, so between that and the the lemon juice, I'm trying to get it dread ready.
      Sorry for the confusion.

    Question(s): I am following the neglect method and the first knots have formed but they are not strong cause I ve started just a few days ago. So, if I wash my hair, will these knots be un-tied again? Will they keep being there? What will happen. And should I use a hair drier? And should I wash my hair as often as before starting neglect? Thanks.

    Hey babe. Been watching your videos like a mad man. Started them by twist and rip. On the 3rd day. I only wash my hair once every 3 to 4 weeks and have been like that for a long long time. As I said in another post I use baking soda, lemon and essential oils to wash and apples cider vinegar and essential oils to condition. Do you think its ok to still wait 3 to 4 weeks or should I go to 2 weeks since they are new? All your videos are aimed to the average person who washes every day or 2. Also is ok to still use apple cider vinegar or will it make it too soft to dread? Lastly, i put no heat on my hair ever... so your drying video lost me at heat ... but while they are new and tiny do u think I can get away with not adding heat?

  • @missblackbird7923
    @missblackbird7923 8 років тому

    i washed my twist n rip dreads 3 days after putting them in. i used 3 tbs of bicarbonate of soda and rubbed it through, then used normal shampoo (instead of normal washing i kinda scrunched my hands through with shampoo and rinsed well) . i towel dried and used a hairdried to just dry my roots a little. i then used a homemade spritz of essential oils (peppermint, teatree, jasmine and lavender) and spritz it through. the dreads fluffed up a TINY bit. but once fully dryed i used a vegan hair wax to palm roll them and they looked completly fine. i now smell like a hospital but at least my dreads are clean af. xD

  • @dark-thoughts

    I have straight hair and did twist n rip method. My dreads are very loose and flat (2 days old) should they be tight when I start them? I tried fixing them with a crochet hook but it doesn't really work because they're basically just messy/frizzy looking braids. Should I start over and do them tighter? Or will they knot up eventually? I'm so confused as to what they should be like to start with..

    Question: With my few day old dreads I am wondering if putting some gel and or hairspray in would be a good idea. What would you say about that?

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  9 років тому +11

      raddom tutorials Gels, hairsprays and similar products are 'holding' products - they hold the hairs in a certain position for a certain style etc. While it's tempting to use them on dreadlocks to keep the hair 'held' in a more dreadlock-like way, it is not beneficial to the dreadlocks - 'holding' the hair in place stops the hair from being able to form new knots and progress. There may also potentially be issues with washing leftover products back out from inside the dreadlocks.

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  3 роки тому

      Hi Wesley. I would never recommend putting any form of wax on your hair. With regards to washing, it would best to try and avoid wetting them every single day as the act of washing can be rough on immature dreads.

    I made my dreadlocks 4 months ago (twist n rip) and became a little obsessed with crocheting... to the point where most of the hairs have been broken. Nonetheless, they still seem to be holding well. I have been struggling to find the balance between oiliness and dryness, as they tend to sound like straw when I would manually bend them. I have been putting drops of oil on my scalp for a month and a half, previously I was simply spraying them with a distilled water and essential oil mixture.
    My dreads now have a more natural "swing" to them, although I still find them a bit stiff and potentially dry... I'm scared to wash them and dry them up to the point of their disintegration.
    The only "wash" I have done was an ACV rinse at the 1 month mark. I don't feel like they are dirty, but I am starting to consider seeing what happens after a wash.
    Is there a particular concoction that would be gentle to the brittleness of my dreads?
    Thanks!

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  8 років тому +1

      +Ciara Collingbourne I would recommend washing them more regularly than only once in four months - they may stop feeling oily after that time, but they will benefit from being washed and a good quality dreadlock shampoo should contain the right balance of ingredients to keep your hair healthy and strong.

    So I created my dread locks yesterday on my own using the back comb method, but I feel as they are too loose at the root & towards the tips. I keep thinking I need to back comb it more lol. As I woke up today with a nest of messy hair & but they are still in shape towards the middle.. Will this be a problem for locking ? Should I back comb more or will they naturally tighten & separate near the roots still?

    Lazy Dreads I've been steered so many different ways I don't even know what I'm doing anymore. At that extent it's getting annoying to try and grow dreads. I've been having so many problems trying to keep my new dreads/twists together at the root that I've been too scared to wash them because I think they're going to come out. The person that did them said not to get them wet for a week. Then I can start washing them. My friend said not to wash them cause, for how loose they were, they'd most likely come out so to wait a few months.
    It's been about 2 months and I haven't washed them and they still loose and bunchy at the root no matter how many time I use my gel and retwist them like I've been instructed to do.
    What the heck am I supposed to do?
    And is it best to get a hair dryer to dry them after washing or will any towel do? How do I even go about drying nee dreads so I don't lose them completely?
    I wish I knew about you way before I started this because I was looking up a lot of stuff before I even got them done and for some reason I never came actiss your videos. That's irritating even more.

    I'm currently contemplating getting dreads but I am just unsure of how to properly start, do I just go from using my normal shampoo to using a residue free shampoo to get my hair used to the routine of not being washed or should i just stay with my normal shampoo to get into the routine until I can get my residue free shampoo?

    So my hair is wavy so that means my hair won't lock up quick as theirs. I'm going for the freeform method and I have stopped combing for about 4 days haven't it in 4 days because I have no shampoo or anything for them, but my real question is, how am I supposed to wash my hair? What should I do while in the shower? How do I work my hair with my hands? Thank you in advanced.

    I feel a little confused... I will be getting dreads soon, but, I dont shampoo my hair. Havent in months. (No its not greasy). Sooooo I should wash them after a week? Does washing them help lock if they aren't greasy? Like should I use one of those shampoos that like strip your hair of all oils? Should I not rinse new dreads in the shower for a week?

    Hey Man your vids are dope af,
    I just started my locks beginning of April and I waited about 9 days, I'm wondering how often can I wash them since its been 2 days now since the first wash. In your vids you ask that the person wait and allow your scalp to learn not to produce so much oils as before deciding to get dreadlocks. But the thing is my whole head isn't dreadlocks, only a small portion of the front is regular fine Mexican hair so do i only wash it with my dreads using a dread shampoo that I recently bought? or Do i wash it separately everyday using like Dove Shampoo. I was rocking the man bun for a while so i do not have side hair just practically the top of my head only has hairs. I have about 30-40 dreads. HELP!

    I know this is old, but hopefully you'll answer.. I already don't wash my hair to often, maybe every 5 days. My question is can I use dry shampoo on the roots if needed? Like I'm going somewhere and don't have time to wash them? I'm doing a bunch of research before I start my dread journey. I have bangs which aren't gonna be dreaded, so I'll use dry shampoo in that area. Will it cause any problems with the dreads?

    OK I will start washing my dreads every week because I been doing it once a month and I think I'm getting to much oil like you said but what can I do about the ends of my hair not dreading like the rest of my locks?is there a method to blunt the ends of the dread?what should I do about dreads locking to other dreads?my dreads are strictly from neglect everyone says they like it but I'd like my dread ends to look like yours.my dreads are not twisted by hand to the scalp if that makes a difference

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  10 років тому

      ***** It depends how old they are - the ends can take a long while to lock - most won't form the complete rounded 'blunted' look by themselves. My dreadlocks are not 'blunted' at the tip, but loose like paint brushes. You may find that starting to wash them more frequently may help if they had been oily before - a deep clean may also help to remove anything that's built up inside.

    I've been letting my hair grow out for about 10 months. It's only about 6 inches long. I've always had really dry curly and frizzy hair. Kinda grows I to an afro. Hoping that if I let it dread up that it would lay down and allow me to have long hair. Any idea about if I let it freeform how long my dreads would end up?? Or any advice??

    You said in your "how-to" videos (on twist/rip and backcombing) that you didn't like to leave in the hair ties (rubber bands, whichever you want to call them) Do you leave them in during the first week? And if so, should you wash with the rubber bands in?

    i've had dreads for about 1.5 weeks now and i washed them once. Since i washed them they look frizzy messy and looser, but you're comforting me a lot. But iam worried, there is like 1 inch of loose hair. in some dreads theres about 2 inches of loose hair from the roots. Is that bad ? Also the tips keep unknotting, should i tie them with rubber bands or something ?

    • @adollfordolls

      +Vik Black Just let them be and they'll work themselves out. Don't stress too much. But if it really bother's you, you can fix them up every couple days but I prefer not to so much so the hair can work itself out.

    okay, so I got my dreads last friday, its saturday now, so 8days have passed, I have now washed my scalp and dreads... they look horrible :D really frizzy :D my question being: how long untill they will start locking? also mine were done with elastics? which I removed after like 3days.... was that maybe a bad move?

    My dreads were started over the course of a week and I started washing them pretty much every second day/every day because we were cycling (to Amsterdam!) for most of that week, so my head got gross pretty quickly under a helmet at 30 degrees, 6 hours a day. The loose hair also needed to be clean for the backcomb method to work. Essentially what I'm asking is whether there are any long-term disadvantages to having washed them that early if none of them came undone in the two weeks since?

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  9 років тому

      Tefans97 If there were going to be negative effects from washing too early or too often, you'd know straight away, if they've held up after the washing, then they're doing fine.

    So you recommend waiting at least about a week before giving them the first wash and you also recommend not washing them everyday. When you say "wash" are you only referring to scrubbing with shampoo or do you consider rinsing them to be washing them as well? What I'm getting at is whether or not it's ok just to rinse off your hair every time you take a shower. I wouldn't want to wash them too often and create a bunch of oil build up but at the same time I don't want to walk around with several days worth of dirt and sweat in my hair.

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  9 років тому

      sakecity7 The loosening up will happen whether you use shampoo or not - it's the rinsing and drying that's going to rough up the hair... so if you're refraining from washing, that's going to include rinsing too - rinsing alone provides very little benefit - water alone doesn't clean - it doesn't remove the oils that slow down the progress... so if you're going to get them wet, you might as well at least get some benefit from it and wash them properly.

    • @WILD__THINGS
      @WILD__THINGS 9 років тому

      Lazy Dreads GREETINGS, SALUTATIONS, HELLO! hahaha Right, thats my point; rinsing the hair might not remove the oil but it should remove at least most of the sweat and dirt.

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  9 років тому

      Well... I suppose you'd have to try it and see - in my experience washing them with water alone just leaves the hair feeling more like it 'needs to be washed' after rather than actually feeling like it's benefitted from the rinse. The hair also needs to be dried again after... as drying is by far the most annoying and time consuming part, whether you shampoo them or not... I don't think there is any point in rinsing alone since they will need to be dried anyway. If you're looking to rinse in between the wash days there's also the added risk of issues related to leaving the dreadlocks damp for too long.

      Lazy Dreads So if you aren't washing your hair on a particular day how do you keep them dry when showering?

    • @LazyDreads

      ua-cam.com/video/drH4N8quQIs/v-deo.html
      I have a shower with an adjustable head so will just tie my hair up above my head and lower the shower head to make sure it's below my hair level. With shorter dreadlocks or a fixed shower head it can become more tricky.

    I've had dreads for about 6 days, I had them before but my mother refused to let me dye my hair while I had them, so I had to take them out. my hair got bleached so I babied it for a bit and used lots of conditioner, I planned having dreads again so I washed my hair with just shampoo and left it for two weeks, it didn't get greasy at all so I started my dreads, I haven't washed it yet and its still not greasy!
    Can I use a medical shampoo like polytar? or is there any shampoos under £3 I could get in a shop, I can't use eBay or anything because of my mother
