I have had a few experiences with Colorado passes. I have driven Mt. Evans road, Berthoud Pass, Loveland Pass, and Trail Ridge Rd. (Rocky Mountain National Park). The one that takes the cake for me was Trail Ridge rd. I drove thru the park in mid-summer, and as per usual on a summer day, had a thunderstorm come in over the park. I was at the highest point on the road, and was dealing with lightning, torrential rain, hail, sleet, and snow. All of this in the terrain above treeline. It didn't stay long, to my relief.
I absolutely love trail ridge road, when it is opened. I prefer taking it from Grand Lake to Estes Park. That said, it and the entire Grand Lake Valley are comprised of "weather-makers" or mountains that produce storms. I have been fortunate on my trips through trail ridge road, but I have heard some horror stories. Thank you so much for sharing your experiences and for watching! All the best!

This is even more scarier to drive than Pikes Peak Highway....too many waterfalls leaking onto the highway for meeeeee
When I was a park ranger over in Moab back in 2005 I had my first experience with the million dollar highway. And this experience pretty much mirrors your own shown in this video. Tons and tons of pouring rain and a frightening drop off. I had to drive over it twice due to lack of hotels in Silverton. Luckily I went back into Ouray and got the very last hotel room in town.
And so there's a nope road on my trip to Ouray. So glad I watched this video before putting my plans in motion. Thank you so much for making this video. Now time to make some different plans...
I done this pass in the spring and the winter , there was a wal at least 20 ft high where CDOT uses these humungus snow blowers on the front of the trucks cutting through the snow . Absolutely amazing .

This road reminds
me of a Canyon road near Los Padres National Forest it was steep with no guardrails and I'd pray before driving on it at night .

Which road was this? I'm from that area in Ventura County.
It reminds me of the one time my family took a road trip out west to see aunts and uncles in California. I don't remember what the name of the road was because I was too young to drive, but I remember that it was a very narrow, windy road with the mountain on one side and then a sheer cliff drop off with no guard rail on the other side. We were on the drop off side, and my mom says that it was one of the most terrifying experiences of her life. One would think that a country as rich as the United States would at the very least be able to put up some guard rails on these roads.
Nothing to do with with money, after all, building the road cost one million dollars per mile in the late 1800's. The problem is the snow. As shown in the sister video to this video aspen trees were "snapped like toothpicks" by the moving snow pack. Guard rails would suffer the same fate. However the ripping out of guard rails causes even more damage. To install guard rail many holes would be drilled into the shoulder of the road thus ripping the shoulder completely away when the avalanche pushes the guard rail down the mountain. There would be no support for the road to remain. "Money" is not the problem; erosion of the mountain and destruction of the roadway by installing guard rails fit the "problem" description.
This road is frightening when the roads are dry. I can't imagine driving it in the rain or snow.

100% agreed. The storm popped up out of nowhere (being from CO, you’d know how that goes). I tend to avoid the route now, but will take it once more on my way out to Durango 😉
As a Californian, I've never seen rain anywhere near that hard! Let alone drove in it.

Check out the access road to Mt Washington, NH. Even though it's not as high (just over 6k ft.) spectacular views and no guard rails.

@@DerelictDoug You don't need a 4x4 for this one, it's an auto road. You just need good brakes when going back down.

Three days ago we rode this highway in the rain on motorcycles. My wife was on a small Suzuki S40, it was so cold at the summit that our hands were locking up with limited visibility through our helmet. We were trying to miss the rain coming to Silverton, but the rain got us anyway. We had no choice but to push on to Durango. What an experience.
Love driving in the rain, this looks like epic fun.

Amazing footage. I'm planning on taking a motorcycle ride through it this summer. What time of year was this? As I definitely don't want to get caught up in this rain on a motorcycle.

In 1987, on my first long-distance motorcycle ride, I rode my Sportster up and over Red Pass in August.....There was no rain, but I could see fresh snow on the weeds at the side of the roadway..... I also rode up Monarch Pass from the east on an August night in conditions very similar to what you see in this video (but without the hail)..... At the top of the pass sits the Monarch Ski Lodge-I immediately checked in and stayed there two nights to rest, as well as to dry and oil my leathers..... Very nice rides, but I would be much more careful about weather conditions than I was at the time...! I believe the Colorado highway department has a toll-free phone number that gives road and weather conditions-and I believe the number in given on the Colorado State Highway map (the one you can get for free at a state visitors center)..... You can probably download a PDF version from the State of Colorado website..... Cheers and happy riding...!!!
No guard rails.Nice. A guard rail saved my life once in the winter, would have plummet off a cliff into one of the Great Lakes.

LOL Live here 35 years Pull 5th wheel w second trailer (double pull) all this time. Not a big deal after awhile. Drive Durango or Pagosa to Silverton maybe 6-7 times a year in winter snowmobiling. Just make sure your rig is in great shape.

I am so very glad that you enjoyed it and did it in a way that was comfortable. I get it, I’m not a fan of heights myself. We were going the speed limit (35-45 mph), however the video would’ve been really long. To remedy this we sped up the playback a little.

Ive been to the high way b4 and we almost died twice and therre were spots so small we would have to reverse to find a spot to stop and let on coming trafic go pass it was a 1 lane high way alowing you to go both directions
