  • When people around the globe think of the American highway system, images of motels along Route 66 is often what comes to mind. These motels were typically family-owned and operated. Bringing with them a certain kind of kitsch and charm that made its way deep into the American culture. Increasingly these icons are being abandoned, repurposed, or being demolished. With that in mind, I would like to take a moment to reflect on how these icons of American innovation came to be and eventually fell from favor.
    Like all innovation, Motels were created out of necessity. One that began on October 1, 1908, when Henry Ford unleashed his Model-T on the American market. Thanks to his innovation of the assembly line; he was able to offer the Model-T for the shockingly low price of $360. For the first time, the American working class could afford a vehicle and they were hungry to explore their vast country. And this group was growing daily, by 1914 Ford had sold half a million cars. With the advent of Ford’s “Tin Lizzie” car the pace of sales increased. So much so that by 1927 they comprised half of the cars on the road. By this time Mr. Ford had sold over 15 million automobiles

    Thank you for the gorgeous footage.
    Monte Vista, CO is the home to the Best Western Movie Manor; a motel with an attached Drive-In Movie theatre. One can watch the movie from the comfort of their own motel room.

      I really appreciate it! I will have to check out that motel and drive-in! Drive ins are so enjoyable and something we all should support.
      All the best ✌️❤️

    Excellent! Despite the decay of this place, I found it a charming reminder of a motel in Colorado on the Eastern Slope of the Rockies, where I rented a 3-room and bath unit for a couple of months in 1970. While I washed dishes in the sink I could look out a window to the vista of a mountain wall, watching it change from autumn to winter. I'd earlier ('late '60s) spent some pleasant nights in Mom & Pop motels that were comfortable enough to keep me from watching Dan Bell's disgusting "Another Dirty Room" series. This one looks similar to the one where I lived in Colorado, which was winterized and rented by the month---at reasonable rates, I might add. Thanks for the information, some of which I hand't known, as well as taking me back to more relaxed times.

      Great to see you again! I am glad I was able to bring back relaxing memories and some new information. I just checked out the video series you mentioned. It reminds me of a dateline series that ran in the 90s. And yes I also found it disgusting (yet interesting) Thanks for joining us and best wishes!

    Motels. They were the places to stay. Clean, with tv, nice beds, and "free direct dial phone" in each room. Some offered a massaging bed for 25 cents. I always took the stationery with the motel's letterhead that was in the desk drawer.
    The string of motels in every city were lit with colorful neon signs. Thanks for the memories.

      I almost forgot about the stationary. For me the stationary and Bic pen was a world of fun. Drawings, tick-tack-toe, and miniature paper airplanes were a few of my favorites. Only once, I got the opportunity to use the massage beds, by the time I made it most of them were broken or replaced. Great to see you again and thanks for your support!
      All the best!

    Derelict Doug, between :29 seconds to :42 seconds that looks so much one many avalanches that took place on Animas Forks Road, Colorado. Over the winter of 2018 to 2019. This part of the dirt road goes to Animas Forks Ghost Town. This is just another ghost town in Colorado.

    And today the tradition of immigrant has taken over the chain hotels modern Indian immigrants have found the chain hotel business very profitable and nationwide have huge stakes in the hotel business. Just thought I would toss that in I was selling Refurbished Flat panel TVs and had a few cuatomers buying everything I could get my hands on. Tractor trailers full basically.

      Thank you for sharing your thoughts. In fact one of the fastest growing chains in the US is an India based company. I appreciate your thought out comment and thanks for watching. All the best!

    Doug, at 8:02 that looked like a satellite dish on the corner of that red building. Maybe that red building was being use like in the 1980's and those hotel rooms weren't being used.

    • @DerelictDoug
      @DerelictDoug  3 роки тому

      This is very likely. The red building looked to be the office as well as the home of the caretaker. I would imagine it was occupied well after the rooms were no longer available for rent. Thanks so much for another insightful comment and all the best!

    Uh, U.S. 66 was first designated in 1926, LONG before Steinbecks novel.....

  • @charlielucky4201
    @charlielucky4201 3 роки тому

    Great video, but Route 66 wasn't John Steinbeck's idea. Cyrus Avery was the man largely responsible for the Mother Road; Steinbeck just wrote a very good novel in which 66 was a major player. Route 66 was commissioned in 1926, three years before the Great Depression and thirteen years before The Grapes of Wrath was published.

    Great documentary, the only polite suggestion I have is to tell the camera man/woman to slow down on the pans and zooms.

    Great video - thanks! In Photography this semester we're looking at the rise of colour photography for art rather than advertising in the USA many years ago and we covered several photographers who went around photographing motels as their golden era was just over. Really emotive work.
