  • How bad can this cheap Minolta vintage lens be? Or is it secretly a little wonder?

Just bought one today at a great vintage camera store. Can’t wait to use it!!

I’ve been buying film cameras with lenses. I’ve noticed the best bargains tend to be minoltas. I seems like they sold a lot of quantity back in the day. Even the later MD lenses while more plastic had great coatings. Some are very easy to clean if they have dust or haze. The MD 45mm f2 for example. Great compact lens btw. Lots of older people’s collections are finding there way to thrift shops, many clean up to like new.

They're also not popular like other better known brands and therefore often underrated

Minolta made some great glass in its heyday. I have a lot because my mother taught me in Minoltas, and I still use it often. They outsold Canon and Nikon through much of the 70s.

Yeah, it's kind of sad to think how important brands like Minolta ended up fizzling out...

    I have a number of Rokkor lenses, probably my favorite brand. I don't have a 35mm only 28mm f3.5, 50mm f1.4, 58mm f1.4, 85mm f1.7, 135mm f2.8, 200mm f4. I like the colour rendering of these lenses. I am looking for a 35mm but haven't found a good one yet.

      That's an impressive kit!
It might just be where I live, but I've found 35mm lenses to be significantly less common than 28, 50 and 135s.

      @@MarcoAries I also have 100mm f2.5 and 100mm f3.5 macro. I have an Auto Chinon 35mm f2.8, Konica 35mm f2.8 and Takumar 35mm f3.5 but no Minolta has come my way.

I think the Photos look very much like something shot with a film camera in the 70. Very vintage look. I like it. Thanks for always good reviews!

Thanks for the nice review. I like the MC 35mm 1.8. It is huge, but it is very useable even wide open and gives a distinctive look. I also have this MC 35 2.8, but in the rubber focus ring version. I prefer the metallic build of all my Minolta lenses, it feels very solid and special. Honestly, I only tested it with a chart and never had it in the field so far. The plastic and lightweight MD 35mm 2.8 is much sharper, according to my tests and field shots. However, it also offers a moderner look, which is not always what we are looking for with vintage lenses… So, I will give a try to the MC 35 2.8, keeping in mind your experience, just to have my own idea as well. Thanks again.

The MD 50 f2 I've tried was sharp but anonymous, this older one has far more character at the cost of detail. It's nice to know there's such a range in the same brand and that it is generally quite affordable!

I have the 1.8 too, and the bloom is very strong wide open on my copy, and the images are soft even at f8. I save it for night work where that bloom can be used to a surreal effect.

@@Skipsul Inferesting. Maybe there was some sever copy variation. I tested it even with chart in controlled conditions. At f8 razor sharp. Together with a preAi Nikon 35 f2 they both performed quite well wide open too. For example, better than Konica 40 1.8 - wide open. The only problem I have with my MC 35 1.8 is that one corner is worse, the lens isn’t centered perfectly.

Probably nothing very special about this. But basically stopped down a bit, its a solid performer. It doesn’t have a lot of character, but many times that’s a good thing. I’ve been shooting film lately, I appreciate more lenses that don’t do to many wild things to the image.

    • @MarcoAries

Agree, when shooting film I too prefer simple lenses that get the job done.

There is just something about Minolta lenses I do not like. I have a few of them myself and even though I find the Minolta 28mm f2.8 fairly decent and usable I never want to use it. My others just have a MEH factor about them. Of all the brand name vintage lenses makers I have, I am never excited to get a Minolta.

    • @MarcoAries

Same with me and Soviet lenses 😅 At the end of the day, personal taste is what matters most

The only Soviet lenses I have ever liked was the Helios 58mm f2 and 85mm f1.5 and mostly just for the swirls. Otherwise, nah I find them kinda junk. @@MarcoAries
