Minolta MC W.Rokkor-HH 35mm f/1.8 - Lens Review & Sample Photos

  • In this video, I review the Minolta MC W.Rokkor-HH 35mm f/1.8 lens illustrating some of its qualities with fitting sample photos. The lens was first introduced in 1968 and released in three different versions over time, all sharing the same lens design of 8 elements in 6 groups. It is a "character" lens which is not particularly sharp and lacks some contrast when shot wide open, but brings about a special look and quality. Once stopped down, sharpness and contrast increase significantly and spherical aberrations and glow are reduced as well. Except for the rubberized focusing ring, the lens is made entirely out of metal and glass and weighs over 400 grams.

    I really like the slow pace and the longer length of the videos. It really nails the analog spirit. To be honest this has become my favorite photography related channel. Thanks Max and Jules.

    Great video. I really enjoy your work and the time you take to thoroughly go through all
    aspects of a lens including the character. They are well produced and beautifully done with an artistic flair. Well done and thank for the content you produce. They are always a pleasure to watch

    Very informative review. I'm a Minolta shooter myself and have thinking of getting this lens for quiet some type. The Minolta Collectors say this is a great lens, but I needed to see real world reviews specially on portraits. Thanks Max!

    Your channel is making me want to shoot film again. I miss it. I have 2 XD-11's and a handful of lenses ready to go. I haven't shot film since 2007 as I got into Konica Milnolta's DSLR stuff.

    I have the little brother of this lens, the MD Rokkor 35mm f/2.8. It's tiny and light and makes a perfect walk around lens on my X700.

    Very much enjoyed your presentation! Thank you. This was my wide-angle lens in the 1970's. I didn't notice the softness, probably rarely used it wide open. I miss the nostalgia of the B&W film. I suppose nothing stops you from recreating B&W and even simulate film grain, if you shoot with today's 30+ MP sensors.

    As always, I very much enjoyed this video for its images as much as for the information-beautiful work. Although purchasing this particular lens isn’t likely (I don’t have a Minolta camera body), I will think about how I take pictures differently now after seeing your photos and hearing you talk about them. Thanks.

    I have the W.Rokkor 35mm f/1.8, I believe it's the following version. i love it so much, i've been using it for the past few months on my mirorless digital camera and looking to use it on film (I have my X500 that needs to be repaired). I love its "busy" bokeh ! It's great for my everyday photography.
    That close focus capacity is a neat plus !

    This MC 1.8 HH has been in my kit and has had constant use past two years. And alongside my C/Y AEG 85mm Planar its a lens i wouldn't trade to modern focal-equivalent.
    It's s truly one of those magical lenses that i always take with me cause it just constantly pumps out honey. Shot almost everything with this (events, weddings, street, portraits and products)
    Thing i really like with this lens is the versatility; wide open everything just glows a bit and out of focus things melts away with most bubbly-buttery bokeh on this planet. Then when you stop it down it becomes one of the sharpest lenses in minolta range. Also colors are beautiful and have that vintage lush. It has got that 'something'. Like sprinkle of magic(alongside normal) dust in it.
    I seriously couldn't trade this range of effects at my disposal for often unnecessary corner- and wide open aperture sharpness. This is ofc my philosophy and what shooting style works for me might not fit for other photog, but i take this lens over modern 35mm 90% of times.
    When i shoot i generally stay between apertures from f4 to f8 There is very little difference in sharpness when you compare it to modern 35mm shot at same apertures. But when comes the time you need that blurred background, its good to have lens that delivers more than just average-looking blur. There is no competition that can touch this lens bokeh-wise.
    As long as i dont have the 40mm 1.2 nokton in my bag, this will stay there. :))

    This is an outstanding ! I would love to see color pictures with this lens and I am already imagining them made with Kodak Portra 400 shot at 200! However I understand that it will not work in program mode in my X-700 but I am seriously considering it! Perhaps a comparison with the MD version F=35/2.8 will be motive for my research!

    Correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought the final version of this lens was the MD 35mm 1.8, and has a redesigned optical formula, that even at 1.8 was very sharp.

    Great video, as they all are. Sophia looks very smart the way she's dressed for the shoot, plus she has great legs!!! :) Anyway, I think another lens you may like to look at is the Minolta MC/MD 16mm f/2.8 fisheye. If you like the look of fisheye lenses and how they distort an image, you'll like this lens.

    Max, do you ever use color filters when shooting B&W?

    • @AnalogInsights
      @AnalogInsights  6 років тому

      Thanks for your comment. Only rarely. I have a yellow/orange filter for my 50mm Leica Summicron which I occasionally use. But I should probably explore the possibilities that filters bring about a bit more. :)

    Next the review of OM 35mm f/2,0 please 😁
    Really Max, you are pushing me to use film more, B&W in particularly ; I've shot maybe 4 rolls in last 20 years, what's funny considering that before that I've usually burned through 4 rolls on a daily basis asa a working photographer...

    • @AnalogInsights

      Thanks so much for your comment. Glad to hear that I'm pushing you to use more film again. :)
      Unfortunately, I don't have access to the 35mm f/2 lens. Jules "only" has the 28mm and 24mm lenses. :)

    • @tomislavmiletic_
      @tomislavmiletic_ 6 років тому

      Well I too have OM 24mm and was quite happy with it in the film age, but unfortunately that lens does not behave well on the digital sensor, at least not wide open. Still, in case you didn't do review of those two lenses by now, it would be nice to see it in the future :-)

    • @AnalogInsights

      PauL TerL Yes, it is indeed called T grain because of the shape of it. Kodak and Ilford use very similar technologies and just put different names of the package. Hope this helps.

    It’s true this lens doesn’t really appear sharp at wider apertures due to spherical aberration (resulting in fairly low contrast). Funny thing is however, that it renders lots of detail untill the corners, even at wider apertures.

    Came here the long way, looking at Minolta glass on ebay. Already have the amazing Celtic Minolta 135mm 2.8. (35 bucks) So, a Minolta body with a 35mm "1.7" lens came up on ebay starting low, and had 19 bidders. So I looked up the lens on ebay and found nothing. I later found the 1.8. Then I went back to the 1.7 and discovered it wasn't a 35mm. It was the 55. I contacted the seller, but not all sellers want to know this stuff. I feel bad for those bidders.

    In some videos (including this one) I notice that audio and video are ever so slightly misaligned. Not a huge deal, but it distracts from the otherwise incredible content and would be something that can be improved. Thanks for all your work!

    I own this lens (MC version) alongside 50 other vintage lenses, most of them Minolta, Tokina (ATX series) and Carl Zeiss Jena and I can sadly tell: this lens isn´t worth the money. It sells for around 150 Euros in Germany on Ebay and I have compared it to the Minolta 35mm 1:2.8 MD and MC, as well as the Carl Zeiss Jena Flektogon 35mm 2.4. The Minolta 35mm 1.8 doesn´t stand a chance when it comes to midframe to corner contrast, sharpness and correction. I understand telling this the "character" of a lens. But because of the lack of optical correction, especially spherical aberrations, resulting in deteriorating image quality of the outer parts of the image, it is just sugarcoating weaknesses. "Character" would be like the low contrast, soft glowing look of the Minolta MC 58mm 1:1.4 which produces amazing results with portraits of women. But on the 35mm 1.8 it is just poor image quality. I would recommend the great performing MD 35mm 1:2.8, which sells for a third of the price and comes in half the weight and size.

    • @altglasmuseum9043
      @altglasmuseum9043 4 роки тому

      @@benisboy2697 That´s what I thought in the first place. But my copy performs exactly like in this video and I got another one for a comparison. Same mediocre performance wide open. I can enjoy this lense for its bokeh at f/1.8, but I wouldn´t still recommend it either. When going for landscapes or documentary photography, I still pick the 35mm 1:2.8 over the 1:1.8.

    You could have taken these shots with any camera and lens... nothing unique or special about the images with this particular lens; only that the out of focus control is poor, resulting in eerie, spooky and esoteric images
