    I never have seen a glazing process in my entire life, nor have I fully understood all the technical terms, as English isn't my first language. I also would have never imagined that the green glaze was that bright red before.
    Beautiful video, beautiful vases. Thank you for that educational process 👍

    For someone completely new who instantly fell in love with pottery after seeing your vids - how do I get started?

    • @floriangadsby
      @floriangadsby  3 роки тому +38

      I'm pleased to hear that! Well, there are a few things you could do. The first is deciding whether you want to learn how to throw on the wheel or not, if you do I recommend attending a taster session, they're quite common and let you experience what it's like before having to commit to purchasing any equipment, classes are great too, where you can attend one day/evening a week for 6-8 weeks or so. There are also tons of community pottery studios these days where you pay a monthly fee and you can attend and use the materials and then technicians usually fire the pots for you. You could also try seeking out and getting in touch with a local potter and offer to help them out in the studio for a day or two in exchange for a throwing lesson, or you could simply buy some air drying clay and some basic tools to experiment with at home. Those are generally the routes people take if they didn't study ceramics in school/college.

    How wonderful! I like your 'ambient' craft videos just as much BUT, having your input, your thought processes and techniques through commentary invests your videos with a quality that is more 'personal' and informative. It is the kind of viewer engagement that could make the difference between being a 'vicarious potter' and actually learning to do it.

    the world of glazes, their possibilities, how they interact with the clays or change depending on the firing method intrigues me a lot.

    Beautiful work. On both the pottery and videos. Watched the 24 minute video about your apprenticeships last night and was inspired. I'm coming back to pottery after 30 years away, and after having spent the last 10 years as a videographer. I would love to see a video showing the behind the scenes of filming your videos; the gear used, the editing etc. Just a thought; and thank you for the inspiration Florian.

      Thank you Mark! Good idea! Now I just need to buy another camera to film my main camera with 😬 but I’m sure I can find a work around for a video like that in the future although I’ve been putting off sending my camera and lens in for repair as they took a tumble recently when my tripods legs gave up. Thankfully it fell, about 5 foot, onto about 6 boards of freshly thrown bowls, which I hope cushioned the fall somewhat.

      @MarkD3P 3 роки тому

      @@floriangadsby - I often see people using their mobile phones to film behind the scenes - amazing what those little cameras can do, especially the newer iPhones. It breaks my heart to think of any of your bowls being crushed by a camera! I wish I was in the UK - I'd be happy to come to your studio and film the behind the scenes for you. Unfortunately I'm in San Diego California. Thank you again for all the work you have shared with potters all over the world.

    I have a question, what type of clay do you use for this?
    Greetings!

    • @floriangadsby
      @floriangadsby  3 роки тому +4

      It's a high iron stoneware commonly known as ES80, works best when reduction fired in a gas kiln as firing it in an electric won't display it's full potential.

    Hi I don’t know much about pottery, I’ve recently brought my mother a small pottery wheel for home (she’s done pottery before). But she doesn’t have a kiln and I don’t know if I’ll be able to get one for her home. Can things like this still be done without a kiln with air dry clay? Thank you

    • @sarahisabella1745
      @sarahisabella1745 3 роки тому

      Hello, you can use air dry clay but as far as I know it’s not water resistent. It would be destroyed when put in water (at least ‚normal‘ clay would). To be water resistant a temperature of at least 600-700‘ C is required. And usual glazes mostly need a temperature of at least 1.000‘ C to melt onto the ceramic piece
