I would recommend you season the beets either with roasted sesame seeds or with a thick, strongly reduced balsamic vinegar and fresh basil. You can make the sesame seeds stick to the beets by using a little pasteurized egg white. Oh, and I would cook the carrots first that makes it more sweet and less earthy, an excellent seasoning for the carrots would be tarragon and roasted Mustard seeds. For the turnips I would use Kikkoman traditional soy sauce and black sesame seeds that you also should roast a little. I've tried all of these in the freeze dryer before, and they turned out delicious.

maybe put all the vegies in the pickle brine for a while before freeze drying. When I make pickles I always at the end take what ever veg is in the fridge and fill up the last few jars . My husband loves it little onions are is favorite

Regarding the door on your unit, there are adjustment nuts on the two hinges that allow you to tighten the tension. Also, check the nut on the door locking mechanism as tit can loosen over time. And, with the rubber gasket you can soak it in hot wAter for a short time and it will compress easier around the door. Great videos BTW.

Here's an idea for the beets, canned beets taste bland and earthy, fresh beets are sweet and rich tasting. , boil and peel fresh beets till skin easily peels off, don't worry about overcooking, slice them, add salt, tons of red wine vinegar and lots of fresh chopped garlic, stir till coated and let them marinate over night. This is my recipe for beet salad, I just add extra virgin olive oil when I serve it, but I think it would taste great freeze dried.

Thanks for the video! That's a very interesting test of vegetable chips. And I really liked the creative approach in this video - Brian, the addicted potato chip man. I love to make tomato chips in my dehydrator with salt and pepper, basil, oregano, rosemary and parmesan cheese. It takes forever because tomatoes are juicy, but it's worth it. Thank you for brightening my morning!

I did beets and they are wonderful. I just salted them. They were from my garden so I sliced them very thin. I have done kohlrabi and I thought they weren't the best. I am going to do potatoes. At least they wouldn't have all the "stuff" in them. My favorite chips are tomato chips. So sad when information is only available to Facebook members.

I would try powdered salad dressing that you can mix and marinate the veggies in before freeze drying, especially Italian or zesty Italian. Usually they don't include oil in the dry mix beforehand so you don't need to worry about the freeze dryer not working properly due to oily food. Dried onion and garlic and even dill added to the veggies will always give a great pop of flavor also.

When I did pickles I found them way too salty, so I put them in the food processor to make pickle powder seasoning! I may try again and perhaps soak them in water 1st to try and pull some of the salt out. The carrot slices look like they'd work well for dips, strong enough not to break hopefully.

I'm heading into the jungles of South America and wanted to take some snacks I could pack with me. My new favorite is from my garden - zucchini! You know the old joke, what are some of the 100 ways you can get rid of all the zucchini you grow? (leaving on people's doorsteps and running) LOL! But I did a whole run of sliced zucchini chips with Everglades seasoning on them. Oh my goodness! The slight sweetness comes through, combined with the salty seasoning is just the bomb!
