There was quite a bit of controversy surrounding DARK HORSE upon its release, along with George Harrison's infamous 1974 tour, but how does the record stack up today?

I actually really enjoyed this album, some of the standout tracks for me were Simply Shady, Maya Love, and Far East Man

I think Dark Horse is a great record. Yeah, his voice sounds bad, but there's an element of fun to it. Especially if you have the original vinyl with the hand written liner notes. You can see he wasn't taking anything too seriously at the time. At the same time, Simply Shady is this heartbreaking soul ballad, a song I often go back to when dealing with depression.

I love Dark Horse! Hostile reactions elude me entirely. The laryngitis actually adds a gravelly gravitas to a voice I love but can be thin. When I first heard the title track on the radio in 74 it blew me away

Shoot me if you will but I love the absurdity and franticness of "Bye Bye Love". Plus, just like another reviewer mentioned, thumbs up for being so different to the two previous albums!

Not too crazy about this album either. I do have a soft spot for Ding Dong though (i love how he dig out his old Beatle suits and guitars for the video).

I love the Funk influences on this album, which makes this album slightly entertaining for me. And yeah, I do find George changing his lyrics on the tour immensely hilarious, even though when putting into context the tough time he's going through

I don't love this album. I think it's ok. I do quite enjoy "Simply Shady". That might actually be my favorite tune on the album. I also enjoy the title track some. If you haven't heard the demo version of it it's worth checking out. His vocals are way better on it because he didn't have laryngitis at the time.

At least we could all agree that George Harrison's Dark Horse is better than Katy Perry's.

Absolutely love the track Dark Horse - not so keen on the rest of the album, but I would probably go so far as to say it's my favourite Beatles solo track, followed closely by many of Paul Mcartney's tracks.

Having bought the album when it came out and loved how different it was from the previous two, don't mind the shady vocals, I like his scratchy voice. Not sure what to say except fuck the critics, they don't know dick. George was right, Ding Dong should replace Auld Lang Syne. The joy of good music is to important to take it so seriously. Is this LP as 'good' as ATMP or LMW, nope, is it because fewer songs and light on serious subject matter or light hearted in approach, perhaps less precious in song selection, difficulty coming up with a full LP worth of material in the middle of many distractions, makes this album a challenge but I love it as I do the others, maybe not as much, but how is that measured? Sax and slide guitar on Far East Man is fantastic. Yours is a orthodox view from your age or era perhaps and a valid view, just not my experience with this LP. You ever tried to come up with 12 or 14 GOOD songs? It ain't easy.

Yes I've tried coming up with more than 14 "GOOD" songs, you can hear my results on this channel and judge for yourself (which people rarely do when they post these kind of comments).

I only recently heard this album for the first time, having been warned away from it by all the negative reviews. I won't say it's a great record but it's certainly better than I had been led to believe. I think I like it a bit better than you do, finding more than just a couple of good songs on it to go with the mediocre material. In particular, I think Simply Shady is an absolutely terrific song, one of George's great ones. Its verses are fine but the climactic feel of the choruses is really fantastic. George was a true song craftsman throughout the early-mid 1970s, in a way that John seemed to be forgetting how to do during the same years. Far East Man is also wonderful (though I agree, a little too long).

I honestly think that this album was just ok, but it doesn’t mean there are bad songs.
Far East Man would probably be my Essential track but I also enjoy Hari’s On Tour,Maya Love and the title track. So Sad and Simply Shady are also ok and Ding Dong despite the hoarse voice being terrible, it’s still quite catchy. But the other 2 songs are dreadful. The final track It Is He was a very unnecessary song to put on the album and Bye Bye Love is just so unlistenable, I’ve had to skip it on all of my listens to Dark Horse. It’s mainly a middle of the road album for me because of George’s voice and the 2 tracks that I hated.

I didn’t care about this one too much, there are good tracks but a lot of the A side didn’t speak to me at all and the voice doesn’t help. I did like dark horse tho. You can’t complain about the instrumentals tho.

OK, i’m confused when exactly did Pattie go off with Eric Clapton? Between this and George’s affair with Ringo’s wife Maureen, topped with Lennon’s “Lost Weekend” trip. McCartney seemed like the only family man of the Beatles… Just taking the wife and kids on the road with him like Patridge Family or something. Someday after Paul departs from this world, some little Wings stories will come out…

I prefer this album to All Things Must Pass due to the crisp production and pretty fucked up gnarly voice. The songs are definitely better on All Things Must Pass, but it's hard to focus when the wall of sound production actually causes the tracks to yell at you.

Was George Harrison on heroin when Dark Horse was released? He named the album after it; kinda like The Stones named a song "Brown Sugar."

Its his worst album for me.....the opening track sounds like a theme to a gameshow! Simply shady i like, so sad.....it is he jai sri krsna is good........his voice has gone and that lets the album down massively. Ill listen to it a couple of times a year though regardless.

  • @tysongames2750

Why??? Why record an album when you don't have a voice? Stupid! Why not just wait till your laryngitis passes and then record the album? Literally the dumbest decision by any artist EVER! Still, having said that I still at least like the songs "Dark Horse" and "Ding Dong." I think the album over all is a little better than "Living In the Material World," but that's not saying much. Pass! Next!

Because when you have record company deadlines, you have to put out something come hell or high-water. Otherwise the record company sues you for breach of contract and you go into bankruptcy.

    • @stefan-rc3ii

@@JTCurtisMusic Surely the record company would agree to delay knowing that the album would sound crap with the artist ill. Why would they risk that? I think it was his choice.

The tour dates were already scheduled - and George was doing rehearsals with the band before hitting the road, plus finishing up the album. I think Dark Horse is one of his best albums from the early 70's - great guitar sounds, songs and Joe Cocker(ish) vocals!
