We need a George Harrison Anthology CD boxset similar along the lines to the 1998 John Lennon CD boxset. There’s definitely enough demo material and rarities for such a release.
Limited it to 45 minutes and under, and went for my favorite George tracks (not necessarily a real Greatest Hits approach.) Solo only. Side One 1. What if Life 2. Cloud Nine 3. All Those Years Ago 4. Blow Away 5. Dream Away Side Two 1. Wah-Wah 2. You 3. Give me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth) 4. Beautiful Girl 5. Gone Troppo 6. Run of the Mill
I felt George was disrespected by EMI/Capitol issuing the Best of album by including Beatles tracks. The Let it Roll collection could easily been two LPs. I believe Dhani Harrison said they wanted it to me, but EMI balked at the idea. Another enjoyable episode, Andrew! - Roger
All Things Must Pass/Living In The Material World/Extra Texture/33.3/George Harrison/Gone Troppo/Cloud 9/Travelling Willburys 1/Live In Japan are my pick for must own George
Thanks for the inspiration: I just dug out the album (the Capitol version, unfortunately), restored the inside cover a bit, and wet cleaned the record. I will listen to it later, after a long time. 🙃
Very enjoyable Andrew! All of George’s albums are worth having and each have great songs. My idea of a compilation would include; My Sweet Lord, What is Life, All Things Must Pass, Give Me Love, Don’t Let Me Wait Too Long, Dark Horse, You, This Guitar (Can’t Keep From Crying), This Song, Crackerbox Palace, Beautiful Girl, Love Comes To Everyone, Faster, Blow Away, Your Love is Forever, Wake Up My Love, Dream Away, That’s the Way it Goes, All Those Years Ago, Tear Drops, Life Itself, Sat Singing, When We Was Fab, Devil’s Radio, This Is Love, Got My Mind Set on You, Poor Little Girl, Cockamamie Business, Cheer Down, Any Road, Looking For My Life, Stuck Inside a Cloud, The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea and Brainwashed. Thanks for sharing Andrew!
Sat Singing so good and it’s another rare one too like the ones on 1976-1989 he referenced. Need official Spotify releases of a few of his songs like that. They should release a deluxe version of somewhere in England that includes the original track listing and mixes
I always found it interesting that on the inner sleeve, "For You Blue" (7:40) is listed as being "Released as a Beatles single" rather than being pulled from the "Let It Be" album. I assumed this was because in 1976 "Let It Be" was still on a United Artists/ABKCO-distributed Apple label in the US, and Capitol didn't want to acknowledge another company. I bought this album at Christmas 1976 along with "33 1/3" and grew to love them both. Thanks for another great video, Andrew!
Yeah, that was likely behind it (much like Capitol’s refusal to acknowledge Vee-Jay’s “Introducing…The Beatles” and United Artists’ “A Hard Day’s Night soundtrack”. It might be why “For You Blue” (which Capitol released as the B-side to their final Beatles single during their existence in “The Long and Winding Road”) was selected over the other - and more acclaimed - Harrison track on Let it Be in “I Me Mine”.
I became a Beatle Fan in the 1976 revival. Was 12 and just lost my mother (sometimes I think was an event in Live the drew me close to their music, as if you can perceive in their music that thorn in John and Paul), and heard their music in radio station’s only-Beatles music 72 hours marathon, ending a fan at the end of it. Then started to Acquire the albums. First the red and blue anthologies, then a friend gave me the Abbey Roads and Imagine records that belonged to a cousin of his, and the I bought “The Hideous” copy of TBOGH. In the following years I would start a collection and get to know about their story.
I've conceived my imagined "Best Of..." as a 2 CD set: DISC ONE Roll Over Beethoven Don't Bother Me I Need You Taxman While My Guitar Gently Weeps Here Comes The Sun Something If I Needed Someone Within You, Without You It's All Too Much Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby DISC TWO My Sweet Lord What Is Life Let It Roll Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth) Woman Don't You Cry For Me This Song Not Guilty Blow Away All Those Years Ago I've Got My Mind Set On You Any Road Marwa Blues When We Was Fab Dark Horse - Live In Japan version Cheer Down Isn't It A Pity (Version One) All Things Must Pass
It is called "Poor Little Girl", the song. A favorite of mine actually 👍 As for a George compilation setlist, I would definitely have Baltimore Oriole, Someplace Else, Try Some Buy Some, Simply Shady, and This Guitar along with the hits.
I think there should be a greatest hits package called “Harrisongs: The Best of George Harrison”. This would be my suggested track listing: Disc 1 1) My Sweet Lord 2) What Is Life 3) Bangla Desh 4) Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth) 5) Dark Horse 6) Ding Dong, Ding Dong 7) You 8) This Guitar (Can’t Keep from Crying) 9) This Song 10) Crackerbox Palace 11) True Love 12) It’s What You Value 13) Blow Away 14) Love Comes To Everyone Disc 2 1) Faster 2) All Those Years Ago 3) Life Itself 4) Flying Hour 5) Wake Up My Love 6) I Don’t Want To Do It 7) Got My Mind Set On You 8) Lay His Head 9) When We Was Fab 10) This Is Love 11) Cheer Down 12) Poor Little Girl 13) Cockamamie Business 14) Any Road
Since its release, I've always felt "GONE TROPPO" was the most "Beatles-like" album produced by any of the Fabulous Four in their individual efforts. Its lack of acclaim somehow always makes me smile. I hope you will do an in-depth show on that particular work someday.
The first cassette tape I received as a kid when I got my first tape player was George Harrison's "Cloud Nine" album, and it's still one of my favorite albums. I've been a George Harrison fan ever since.
George is my favorite Beatle. And he's also my favorite post-Beatle. I've got all his solo albums and his single b sides. He is also the only one of the 4 that I still listen to his records. George's albums are chock full of gems. His music definitely isn't everyone's cup of tea.
George LPs are a must for collectors!! I find beautiful music on all of his albums!! Great work Andrew! As the other fella said!! I never listen to the 3-4 diff versions of best of I have.. all things must pass is my wife and myself’s favorite record to listen to regularly!!😉😘
Thank you for covering this often overlooked George album, Andrew! I have the cd version of 'Best of Dark Horse 1976 - 1989' which I bought on release and really enjoyed playing it. A shame that it never entered the UK or US charts since I think it features a very good selection of George's post EMI tracks.
I found a copy of that a couple years ago at the local farmer's market/swap meet and absolutely had to snatch it up; I wish there was an equivalent CD of just his Apple/EMI singles.
One of my favorite George songs is "Horse to the Water" released by Jools Holland's Rhythm and Blues Orchestra sadly released after George's death. It was George's last performance on a record. The song can be find here on UA-cam and I suggest all George fans give it a listen!
Glad you brought this up! This is a great song! I remember listening to it (first new George song in years) only a few weeks before George died. It was actually trademarked "RIP 2001"...a little hint, letting us all know that the end was coming. (It was released online, I believe, in October 2001.) And it truly is a great song...nice chiming Hammond B3, great sounding band...and George's voice, though weak, is full of his personality. Great lyrics too. People call BRAINWASHED George's last work, but it was really was HORSE TO THE WATER. (I think Sam Brown did the song at the Tribute Concert a year later.)
Great Song! You can find it on Jools Hollands cd "Small World Big Band." Love Sam Brown's version on Concert for George. Girl blows it out of the water!!
1976 was the year I discovered the Beatles as a kid. Maybe the rereleases and the media blitz had something to do with it, but I ended up getting all the reissued singles and most of the albums. Imagine what it was like hearing them all for the first time! ❤ Actually the only George Harrison album you need is All Things Must Pass. ❤
I have always loved the Beatles, but until recently was only interested in John's solo career. For some reason, at the beginning of the lockdown in 2020 I started listening to George Harrison's first solo album and I was blown away. And to be told All Things Must Pass was Something I needed to hear.
Not surprised it didn’t sell as most of the tracks aren’t even George’s songs (as in solo tracks) and most George fans would’ve had the Beatles albums? Desperate cash in! Thanks Andrew 😊👍
Great upload as always Andrew, I don't think George himself would have wanted any Beatles songs of his on a George Harrison best of album. There is plenty of great George songs to make an excellent album. His songs may not be as commercial as Pauls (whose are?) but all things must pass is one of the best Beatles solo albums in its own right and he did have 3 US number ones after the Beatles. I think he recorded enough great songs to make a 14 track top notch album. I would put on my sweet lord, isn't it a pity, what is life, if not for you, give me love, got my mind set on you, photograph, all those years ago, between the devil and the deep blue sea, blow away, you, i'd have you anytime, all things must pass and let it down. Cheers Andrew, Tim
I wonder if George was embarrassed by what Capitol did. If they tried hard enough, they could have made a 12-14 song greatest hits record from his material up to that point by taking 2-3 songs from each album, plus singles and B-Sides like "Deep Blue" and "Miss O'Dell".
Not long ago, maybe a year or two at the most, I picked up the CD version that you displayed here, of this album in a local charity shop in South East London for a quid (£1 to your viewers from overseas). At first I thought it was a snide (in other words a bootleg) but now you have confirmed for me that it is a real bonafide release, so thank you for that Andrew!!
Thanks, Andrew ... another fun one! I was a very young child when my father purchased George's Wonderwall Music. I remember that album being played and it became part of my Beatles DNA. It's really a spectacular album, imho. George covers a lot of musical territory on the album. Way back in the days before Discogs, "Wonderwall Music" and Ravi Shankar's soundtrack "Chappaqua" were holy grail items that I hunted for a lot. I was so happy when I was finally able to find a really pristine pressing of Wonderwall and this was before the 1992 reissues. BTW, crank up "Ski-ing" really loud!! What a cool riff!
Great video Andrew! All Things Must Pass is always my go to George album. The greatest hits compilation that was released in 2009 Let It Roll is another go to album. Actually, it's very good! Still, I love the other studio albums he recorded.
In the U.S. My Sweet Lord was a "double A side" with Isn't It A Pity. What Is Life was the follow up single, backed with Apple Scruffs. My Best Of will include the following Beatles tracks: Don't Bother Me, I Need You, Think For Yourself, Taxman, I Want To Tell You, Within You Without You, Long Long Long, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Old Brown Shoe, Something, Here Comes The Sun and I Me Mine. The solo tracks will be, My Sweet Lord, What Is Life, Beware Of Darkness, All Things Must Pass, Bangla Desh, Give Me Love, Living In The Material World, Sue Me Sue You Blues, Dark Horse, Ding Dong Ding Dong, You, This Song, Beautiful Girl, Pure Smokey, Blow Away, Not Guilty, Here Comes The Moon, All Those Years Ago, That's The Way It Goes, When We Was Fab, Devil's Radio, Cockamamie Business, Any Road, Devil and The Deep Blue Sea and Marwa Blues. I know there are a few hits missing and I left Wilbury stuff off. To each his own and these are my George must-haves.
For me, the finest George Harrison compilation has got to be, 'Let It Roll, Songs by George Harrison'. This is a really good collection of George's best later Beatle songs and his solo work.
Here is my idea of a George Harrison compilation album. I would put I’d have you anytime my sweet lord, it’s not a pity what is life let it down Woman don’t you cry for me dear one tears of the world which is one of the best songs that George Harrison ever recorded Poor little girl tear down got my mind set on you when we was fab Marwa blues brainwashed Annie Road the devil in the deep blue sea which shows his wonderful ukulele skills. give me love give me peace on Earth blow away teardrops and cockamamie business as far as bonus tracks go I would definitely put in mystical one and runs so far which he gave I think Eric Clapton up to Lapointe and his vocals on that one is great.
I never purchased this album as a teenage in the 1970’s. But I do remember it in the record bins at the music stores in US, with cover of George in front of the hot rod car. And I don’t remember seeing any import stickers on it. Great video, and thanks for sharing.
Burned my own 2 CD-R set of my personal favorite Harrisongs: CD1 1. Isn't It A Pity 2. Let It Down 3. Run Of The Mill 4. All Things Must Pass 5. Wah-Wah 6. What Is Life 7. Ballad Of Sir Frankie Crisp (Let It Roll) 8. Crackerbox Palace 9. This Song 10. Your Love Is Forever 11. Blow Away 12. The Answer's At The End 13. Grey Cloudy Lies 14. Dream Away 15. Unknown Delight 16. Dear One 17. The Light That Has Lighted The World 18. Everybody Nobody CD2 19. Got My Mind Set On You 20. When We Was Fab 21. Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth) 22. All Those Years Ago 23. Living In The Material World 24. Awaiting On You All 25. Beware Of Darkness 26. Cloud 9 27. This Is Love 28. Be Here Now 29. Who Can See It 30. Sue Me Sue You Blues 31. Don't Let Me Wait Too Long 32. Try Some Buy Some 33. The Day The World Gets 'Round 34. That Is All 35. Life Itself 36. Wake Up My Love 37. That's The Way It Goes 38. Beautiful Girl Now I feel like doing a third disc! So many good songs by George Harrison...
That’s a good selection, mainly for me because it’s got loads of tracks from ATMP. I don’t think you could stretch to a 3rd side with the same quality.
Admittedly, due to limited budgets over the decades, the only George Harrison solo albums currently in my collection are "All Things Must Pass"(LP), "Gone Troppo"(LP), "Somewhere In England" (LP), and "Cloud Nine"(CD).
Also, 35 years later, it's still the only place where you can listen to ""Poor Little Girl" and "Cockamamie Business" which, for some reason, remain unreleased up to this day.
As a young fan in the early 80s, I loved the Best of GH as a “one stop shop” for George’s best known songs. I rarely listen to it these days. Like the German Odeon release, the Australian release switched While My Guitar and For You Blue, for which George Martin is also credited as producer. We also got the awful Capitol cover. The album was reissued here in 1982 on the Axis budget label, again reproducing the American cover art. Still waiting for a truly representative, satisfying and career spanning GH compilation.
This is great! Your videos keep getting better and more interesting. Many in the internet world would not bother to touch on these albums or would provide such detailed information. I have the US edition and the MFP version, as well as the original CD and I feel that the MFP has the best overall sound. Thanks again for creating and posting.
Hi Andrew, great video as usual. Whilst it isn't the only GH album you need, I'm personally really fond of the 'Best Of' as it was my first introduction to George's solo recordings when I was younger - I first listened to it after loaning it from my local library.
All Things Must Pass is my favorite ex-Beatle album. My Sweet Lord would be played first anytime I added new gear on my stereo system. To me, all mastering done with this album at anytime is pretty much substandard. It needs a genuine good mastering and cutting. The last one by Danny(?) was just awful. One more thing, George's slide guitar style was absolutely amazing. One of the best slide guitarist's of all time.
Thanks Andrew. I knew this would be interesting...and the story behind it sheds light on what was going on with George. Although he had no artistic control on the release, it did help him, as you pointed out. Good stuff.
Japanese pressing has includes Capitol's deep echo mix of "Think For Your Self". That was more clear than original Capitol pressing! By the way..... 4:30 Peter Tork on guitar!! I love The Monkees too!!
Hello Andrew - this is a great video, bringing to mind a most peculiar time in Beatles' history. I had always assumed that SHAVED FISH sold great. When it came out, it was well stocked and, as I remember all of my brother's Beatle buddies loved it too (as it was a solid work, removing John further away from his days as a "Topical" singer/songwriter). For George's compilation, most people thought that it was a dirty trick for Capitol / EMI to include the fab four tracks. You know; "doesn't the label think he has enough strong songs of his own?" That was the sentiment of it back then. One thing I've noticed with the American pressings is that special inner sleeve was a true rarity with pre-owned pressings that showed up in the record shops.
I got the MFP copy for free from a friend's parent last year, complete with the original shrink bearing a $2.99 price sticker. Glad to hear that it's the finest sounding pressing!
Andrew, this is Gold! Thank you for being a fan ;) I'd never seen the UK innersleeve of GH GH, or noticed that it has rounded corners. That said, I don't enjoy the '76 or '09 compilations. "Best of Dark Horse" is near-perfect, however. (I would add "I Don't Want to Do It" and replace "Gone Troppo" with "Mystical One"). Just after "Wingspan" was released, I made solo mix CDs for a few friends covering George, John and Ringo's work. For George, I lifted all of "Best of DH," adding the cuts I listed above, and then side 2 from the '76 GH GH... then I added "Miss O'Dell, "I Don't Care Anymore," "Deep Blue," "Isn't it a Pity," "Don't Let Me Wait Too Long," "This Guitar Can't Keep From Crying," “Pure Smokey,” “Faster” “Here Comes the Moon” and "Art of Dying" (the slower version, from a boot!). Today, I'd probably add "Far East Man" and the booted "When Every Song Is Sung." It all fit perfectly on two CD-Rs if memory serves! I'm sure you've seen George's appearance on "Saturday Night Live" around this time; that was a nice promotional push for "33 1/3." I always felt the LP would have made the top 10 if not for "Greatest Hits." Sad. As for John and Ringo... it's not ideal, but EMI COULD have fit up to 18 tracks on a single LP at that time... "Blast" might have been perfect if it rounded up all of Ringo's other non-LP cuts (the wonderful "Coochy Coochy," plus "Down & Out" and "Blindman"). I also feel that the title tracks are the weakest cuts of "Sentimental" and "Beaucoups"... "Blue Turning Grey Over You," "$15 Draw" and "Wine, Women and Loud Happy Songs" would have been better choices. Or even Ringo's last Apple US chart single ("Goodnight Vienna"). And I have a soft spot for "Snookeroo" (#51 UK, but charted as #3 in the US alongside "No No Song" during a time of great confusion and reworking of the Billboard charts). For "Shaved Fish," it could have been perfect if they'd included "Move Over Ms. L" (thus compiling all of John's non-LP tracks), plus "Scumbag" and "New York City" (the two best cuts on "Sometime" IMO), plus "Intuition." I wouldn't hate "What You Got," "Meat City" or "Scared," either. (I, personally, would have left off "Mother," hoping buyers would buy and experience the POB LP in-full). Can you imagine the hype sticker that EMI could have included? "With guests Elton John, Eric Clapton, Frank Zappa, Billy Preston and Ringo Starr." WOW. (For anyone wondering, my CD compilation of John’s work took all of these cuts, all of the POB and Imagine LPs, John’s cuts from “Double Fantasy,” the cuts from “Rock and Roll Circus,” plus “Dizzy Miss Lizzie” from “Live Peace,” and “Nobody Told Me,” “I’m Steppin’ Out” and “Rock ‘n Roll People”) P.S. wonderful dissolve at 13:37 in the video!
Great video about George's up and down 1976 year! All three best of compilations: the '76 Capitol album, Best of Dark Horse, and Let It Roll are worth the money, and good compilations. Three songs that should have found their way onto one or more of them would be Beware of Darkness, Miss O'dell, and Dream Away (from Time Bandits). I think 33 and 1/3 was George's best solo album, because it still sounds fresh and light. It's ironic that a year after writing I Me Mine he put together a bloated boxed set that should have been condensed down to one album's worth (oh, and maybe acknowledge the Chiffon's He's So Fine song, so he could have saved himself the legal heartburn). I would have loved to see George do a whole album of Bob Dylan covers - another in long line of what ifs.
I bought the American version of "The Best of George Harrison" in the US when it was released, like I did with every Beatle and solo Beatle album. I was slightly bummed that half of the songs were Beatles songs. However, I suppose it was also a good reminder to the latest generation that not only was he a Beatle, but he wrote some great songs with that band. Still, they failed to include any evidence of his Indian musical styles as in "Within You, Without You," etc. Either way, instead of using Beatles songs, they should have dug deeper into his album tracks for the "best of" compilation, as there were a lot of great songs on there. As always my friend, another fantastic upload!
My mom had the MFP copy on cassette - I always liked the track selection - I think it’s a good representation of George’s best Beatles and Solo tracks, if lacking in some of the better album tracks. But for someone not looking for deep cuts, it’s a good taster LP.
My favourite George Harrison album is his eponymous one released in 1979, the contents of which tend to be ignored when the powers that be come to compile compilation packages. I think George Harrison's legacy would be served nicely by a more extensive retrospective, along the lines of the Wingspan one released many years ago, where each of his albums is represented, although perhaps that is an archaic idea today.
Another great video! Nice to see some focus on George. Just a couple of minor corrections regarding the charts. Best of Dark Horse actually did chart in the US, albeit at a very low number 132. And Let It Roll actually reached number 24 in the US, not number 9.
I remember buying a load of second hand cassettes from a small downtown shop in Sydney, during my first trip to Australia in 1988. I had just bought a brand new Auto reverse Sony Walkman in Singapore (24hr stopover) so I needed tapes urgently. Among those cassettes I bought Best of George Harrison (US cover on a budget Axis label) Beatles Rarities (US version but on Parlophone EMI Australia) and Pink Floyd Relics (also on budget Axis) and Dark Side Of The Moon (EMI Australia) I played those tapes non stop and loved them to bits and I loved the track order of Best of George Harrison. For me like most of my LPs and cassettes…. It is about those memories of where I was and what I was doing when bought them and how I felt when I first played them. Regrettably, I gave all my cassettes to Oxfam in the late 90s. I wished though I kept all those tapes I bought in Singapore and Sydney because they were for me very special. Also it was during my first visit to Sydney that it was announced on a local radio station that The Beebs Lost Beatles Tapes Series was soon be broadcasted. It was a very exciting time indeed.
4:34 That's good to know, I personally struggle with his Indian stuff and find it rather boring, so this might actually be a good compilation. Just a shame it couldn't be reissued to add a few other gems like 'This Song' and 'All Those Years Ago'.
If you're only kinda interested in George's music, then this is a pretty good introduction but I'd pair it with The Best Of Dark Horse which covers the rest of his solo career minus the Wilburys and Brainwashed. With those 2 albums, you have a good overview of his music. Maybe they could re-issue the 2 albums as a double album, with a 3rd disc featuring a couple of songs from each TW album, a few from Brainwashed, some from Live In Japan, the Indian influenced songs from The Beatles years and maybe a few others that were left off the other 2 discs. For me personally, I'd have a hard time trying to narrow his entire solo discography down to just 1 album, it'd need to be a multi disc set, especially seeing as his most well respected album was 3 discs on it's own. But if you wanted just "The Essential George Harrison", it'd probably be something like this (I'm only including songs written by George so no covers): George Harrison - Portrait Of A Leg End (this was a proposed title for the album that became Brainwashed): DISC/LP 1 - When We Was Fab: SIDE 1: 01. Don't Bother Me. 02. I Need You. 03. Think For Yourself. 04. If I Needed Someone. 05. Taxman. 06. Love You Too. 07. Within You Without You. SIDE 2: 08. All Too Much. 09. The Inner Light. 10. While My Guitar Gently Weeps. 11. For You Blue. 12. I Me Mine. 13. Something. 14. Here Comes The Sun. DISC/LP 2 - This Guitar Can't Keep From Crying: SIDE 1: 01. Party Seacombe. 02. All Things Must Pass. 03. What Is Life. 04. Art Of Dying. 05. Bangladesh (Studio Version). 06. My Sweet Lord (Concert For Bangladesh). 07. Wah-Wah (Concert For Bangladesh). SIDE 2: 08. Give Me Love. 09. Sue Me Sue You Blues. 10. Ding Dong. 11. Simply Shady. 12. Dark Horse. 13. Tired Of Midnight Blue. 14. This Guitar. DISC/LP 3 - Heading For The Light: SIDE 1: 01. Crackerbox Palace. 02. This Song. 03. Blow Away. 04. Faster. 05. All Those Years Ago. 06. That's The Way It Goes. 07. Dream Away. SIDE 2: 08. When We Was Fab. 09. This Is Love. 10. Heading For The Light. 11. I Want To Tell You (Live In Japan). 12. Piggies (Live In Japan). 13. Stuck Inside A Cloud. 14. Any Road. That was a hard compilation to put together even at 3 discs in length and not including any covers.
Thanks Andrew, superb stuff. I picked up the UK CD version recently and was interested to see that Phil Spector gets a co-producer credit (with George) for 'You'. Never seen this anywhere else, although Spector was of course involved in the original Ronnie Spector backing track in 1971. I think Side 2 is supposed to be the USA Apple hit singles ('What is Life' was a separate single release in USA), with the exception of the New Year song 'Ding Dong' and the run-off single 'This Guitar Can't Keep From Crying'. I think it's a good album to play in the car!
I enjoy making my own best-of 'albums', and of course I have a George Harrison one. Here is the track listing of my own '20 Greatest Hits' of George : 1. Hari's On Tour Express 2. This Song 3. Blow Away 4. My Sweet Lord 5. Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth) 6. The Lord Loves the One (That Loves the Lord) 7. Miss O'Dell 8. Deep Blue 9. What Is Life 10. Living in the Material World 11. You 12. Crackerbox Palace 13. This Guitar (Can't keep from Crying) 14. Cloud Nine 15. Wreck of the Hesperus 16. This is Love 17. Got My Mind Set on You 18. Any Road 19. All Those Years Ago 20. Thanks for the Pepperoni
Greetings from Australia Andrew, thanks again for another compelling episode. I have a New Zealand 1st pressing of this LP, funnily enough comes with the US cover and inner sleeve but thankfully has the UK matrix numbers, although likely source is a UK master tape, sounds great all the same. Love your work, cheers Zane
I haven't listened to it in years, I had it on cassette and later bought the LP. I'll put it back. I bought the second one when it came out, excellent, great album. Thank you for these interesting videos you make.
Off at a tangent I agree about the quality of sound a mfp record. I have my dad's 1970 Shadows album and Relics by Pink Floyd on the original starline label and the reissue mfp plus 60s compilations. The sound is really warm with plenty of bass. Relics on mfp is so superior, the first track Arnold Layne and the intro is so deep in bass, Waters's Rickenbacker sounds beautiful. Gonna have to find the beatles's rock and roll 1 and 2 on mfp. Great video as always.
Many thanks for this video, and yes the cover of Capitol's pressing of the best of is truly hideous. If I were to compile my own best of George Harrison, it would comprise only his solo work. Stuff like Beware of Darkness, give me love give me peace on earth.. in fact it would probably be a variation of let it roll, but of my personal favourite George tracks. For me, my favourite album will always be All Things Must Pass, in fact it is to my mind the greatest album of all time, if I had to pick one from the amazing number I have listened to over the years that I have been a huge music fan. The Beatles are as far as I can see are the only band to have Three major songwriters who's output for the band was successful. I'd love to know of any others. George Harrison was a fantastic songwriter, with a wonderful gift for melody, and he rightly deserves the very best in whatever is released in his name.
You should do a video on the relationship between McCartney and Michael Jackson, including how they met, their friendship, the work they did together as well as Michael buying the Beatles catalog, Paul’s reaction to it, the fallout/friction, how it resolved and the aftermath.
Another great video, mate! I keep saying it...and I mean it...this is the best music-based channel on UA-cam. Every single time you post a new video, I go into a Beatles obsession again. (I can't remember if you've done a SHAVED FISH video...that would be a great choice for a video! Also still waiting for an ANTHOLOGY 3 video...unless I missed it!)
This was a pretty disturbing thing to find in record stores when it came out. Along the lines of Love Songs it was a desperate money grubbing hunk of lunacy.
Money grab - making a profit on the expense - is the point of all business. There is a difference between grabbing and grubbing. Selling Beatles tracks and ignoring most of his solo catalogues is grubbing.
Nice video! The blue best of dark horse album has been a go to album for me since I bought the cassette on its release. Got the CD now and it's also ripped to my Sonos library - I can't explain it, but to my ears the audio quality has always been one of the best of any albums I own by any artist. I play it regularly, often on the basis of sound quality alone. The cassette even looks and feels like a much higher quality product than my others from that era. IIRC George's self-titled album (also the cassette) feels similarly of particularly excellent quality - I've never heard any discussion about this, but I'm sure it isn't just me!
Hi Andrew & another great informative video on a fantastic compilation album of George's & it most definitely isn't the only album of his that's required!! I've the original vinyl which is great but I find the CD version very low volume wise & it could do with a full remaster.
Andrew, I always look forward to the start of each week to catch your latest video offering and this one didn't disappoint as I took me right back to 1976 when I was 15 and seriously getting into all things Beatle. I definitely bought Rock 'n' Roll Music, The Best Of George Harrison, Shaved Fish, 33 1/3 etc at the time which I still have in my collection. In later years I also grabbed The Best Of Dark Horse and the Let It Roll albums as well. The Australian version of TBOGH unfortunately has the hideous American cover and to add insult to injury doesn't even have an inner sleeve! It does though have YEX961 & YEX962 in the dead wax so at least it's a UK master. Let It Roll comes pretty close as the perfect George compilation in my book.
The MFP pressing was quite common as an import in the US. My local public library had the MFP copy (which I taped) and then when it came to buying my own, I had no trouble finding the MFP version and actually sought it out. I have a certain nostalgia for this compilation as this was my first album of solo Harrison when I was about 14 years old (I am now 47) and listened to the tape I made from the LP over and over (on a cassette with a Joan Baez compilation on the other side). When I did tape this album, since it was the Harrison solo work I was most interested in (I had all the Beatles tracks on other tapes made from other LPs), I recorded it with side two first which is how I listen to it to this very day. I have also owned Shaved Fish, Blast From Your Past and Wing's Greatest for about as long (although my pressing of Wing's Greatest on Capitol does not sound very good) and played them quite a bit.
Andrew, your delivery and commentary is so informative and enjoyable. The back story you always provide is so valuable to the context of what you present. I did not purchase this compilation as I had all the songs from this I wanted already. Generally, good pick of songs, but I would have chosen "I Me Mine", instead of "For you Blue" from Let It Be. The former is a much better song in my opinion. It's a shame the Indian influenced songs were not considered. Love you to or Within you, Without you would have been respectable choices. As to your question. I would call this compilation a good introduction to Harrison's work. However, the triple album "All Things Must Pass" is a masterpiece and a must have for any fan, and I would add, the only solo Beatles work to reach #1. A few misses, but a great work overall. One of my favorites is the not so thinly veiled swipe at Paul in the song "Run of the Mill"
I am a huge Harrison fan. He has affected me both musically and spiritually. Brainwashed, for example, was his finest work. All of his output was better on the whole than his other band mates, but that's just me.
Great video Andrew. Surprising to learn the MFP version of The Best of, is the best pressing. The MPF pressings of Rock ‘n’ Roll Music vol 1 and 2 don’t come anywhere near the original gatefold Parlophone pressing, which is stunning. There’s a video right there!
Another excellent video on an excellent subject, Andrew. Superb! What I would like to see is a proper set of purely solo "Best Of" George tracks, in other words, Beatles group recordings, not included. I think a set using the concept Paul used for "Wingspan" would be a winner. CD 1: "Hits/Singles", and CD 2: "History - Key LP Tracks"*. (Here, I would be okay with any George Beatles' songs performed live.)
Another great one Andrew. This album was always kind of special for me because it was the first album I had with any Beatles studio content on it. My first ever Beatles album was Live at the Hollywood Bowl and the Best of George was the first thing I bought after. I agree with you about the hideous cover, although I was only eleven when I bought it and really didn't have much a critical eye yet. I just loved anything Beatles.

Great to see this album reviewed! My first copy was the mfp version (from good old Woolworths) until I got a really nice original 1976 copy. It’s disappointing emi didn’t use solo recordings on side 1,but nevertheless still worth owning.
Hello, I'm from Argentina, I always imagined what the next Beatles album would have been like if they hadn't broken up. I imagine it would have been a double album, the black album, taking songs from Paul's first 2 albums, John's first 2, George's solo debut and some of Ringo's from his debut covers album. It would be great to see a video with this idea, your channel is very good. greetings
Cloud Nine. I just love every track on that album. For me...All Things Must Pass is the "easy" album to choose...but Cloud Nine is the ONE Harrison Album I'll never grow tired of.
"The Best Of George Harrison" was my introduction to the solo Harrison back in the very early 90s, and I think I still remember the moment the needle dropped and I heard the first bars of "My Sweet Lord" for the first time! I was absolutely mesmerized. When I first heard "Bangla Desh", I thought "Wow, what is that?" and many other positive reactions to most tracks on Side B'. "Dark Horse" (the song) definitely puzzled me and it took me years to realise what a great tune it is. To this day, this album is one of the most important in my life and I have various copies from Greece, Italy, France, Japan, the U.S.A. and of course the budget one and the CD. The day of my purchase, that record shop had this and "Give My Regards to Broad Street" on display and I was amazed that both albums had Beatles tracks in them. I even remember the price I paid for it, 800 drachmas, which was quite cheap for a vinyl LP at the time. I'm glad I chose "The Best Of George Harrison" over "Broad Street". It definitely made me a big fan of George!! On another note, "Best Of Dark Horse 1976-1989" did appear on the Billboard chart. It made #132 on the Top LPs and Tape listing during a 6-week chart tenure! It definitely deserved a much better fate, but George isn't really famous for the promotion of his own records! He'd rather promote other people's records (like Ravi's or Splinter's) and leave his own to do their own thing, unhelped.
All Things Must Pass is a Masterpieces and I've always liked Living in the Material World His most Spiritual Album
Nothing tops living in the material world that album is no skip material.
I can’t comment on a suggested “best of” album but I absolutely love the Cloud Nine album. It’s brilliant!
It’s actually the only George Harrison album you don’t need 👍
Spot on!
Unless you're a completionist XD
Harsh, but true.....
Absolutely true.
EMI showed no respect to him with the release of that album
my favorite George compilation would be everything played in chronological order and no mishmash timewarping of continuity.
We need a George Harrison Anthology CD boxset similar along the lines to the 1998 John Lennon CD boxset. There’s definitely enough demo material and rarities for such a release.
This channel is pure gold
Thank you!
Limited it to 45 minutes and under, and went for my favorite George tracks (not necessarily a real Greatest Hits approach.) Solo only.
Side One
1. What if Life
2. Cloud Nine
3. All Those Years Ago
4. Blow Away
5. Dream Away
Side Two
1. Wah-Wah
2. You
3. Give me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth)
4. Beautiful Girl
5. Gone Troppo
Excellent as usual. Thanks
Picked this up on UK ebay for less than a fiver few years ago mint condition. Nice comp to put on and play. Another great vid 👍
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
Yeats ago I made my own I included here comes the sun & homeward bound with Paul Simon from SNL.
Thanks for watching, Bill!
That’s a good list 👍
Got my mind set on you is going to be on it
His live performance from the 1975 Christmas episode of Rutland Weekend Television has to be on it as a bonus track.
Sat Singing so good and it’s another rare one too like the ones on 1976-1989 he referenced. Need official Spotify releases of a few of his songs like that. They should release a deluxe version of somewhere in England that includes the original track listing and mixes
Great information as always, thank you Andrew.
Glad you enjoyed it, Chris!
Thanks Joseph. Glad you enjoyed it!
I've conceived my imagined "Best Of..." as a 2 CD set:
DISC ONE
Roll Over Beethoven
Don't Bother Me
I Need You
Taxman
While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Here Comes The Sun
Something
If I Needed Someone
Within You, Without You
It's All Too Much
Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby
DISC TWO
My Sweet Lord
What Is Life
Let It Roll
Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)
Woman Don't You Cry For Me
This Song
Not Guilty
Blow Away
All Those Years Ago
I've Got My Mind Set On You
Any Road
Marwa Blues
When We Was Fab
Dark Horse - Live In Japan version
Cheer Down
Isn't It A Pity (Version One)
All Things Must Pass
It is called "Poor Little Girl", the song. A favorite of mine actually 👍
As for a George compilation setlist, I would definitely have Baltimore Oriole, Someplace Else, Try Some Buy Some, Simply Shady, and This Guitar along with the hits.
I think there should be a greatest hits package called “Harrisongs: The Best of George Harrison”. This would be my suggested track listing:
Disc 1
1) My Sweet Lord
2) What Is Life
3) Bangla Desh
4) Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)
5) Dark Horse
6) Ding Dong, Ding Dong
7) You
8) This Guitar (Can’t Keep from Crying)
9) This Song
10) Crackerbox Palace
11) True Love
12) It’s What You Value
13) Blow Away
14) Love Comes To Everyone
Disc 2
1) Faster
2) All Those Years Ago
3) Life Itself
4) Flying Hour
5) Wake Up My Love
6) I Don’t Want To Do It
7) Got My Mind Set On You
8) Lay His Head
9) When We Was Fab
10) This Is Love
11) Cheer Down
12) Poor Little Girl
13) Cockamamie Business
14) Any Road
Since its release, I've always felt "GONE TROPPO" was the most "Beatles-like" album produced by any of the Fabulous Four in their individual efforts. Its lack of acclaim somehow always makes me smile. I hope you will do an in-depth show on that particular work someday.
The first cassette tape I received as a kid when I got my first tape player was George Harrison's "Cloud Nine" album, and it's still one of my favorite albums. I've been a George Harrison fan ever since.
That's a great album. 👍
Was reading that Macca considered George's last LP 'Brainwashed" his favorite and even put it in one of his top 6 LP's!!!
It's always fascinating how you go into this; like Egyptology.
And here it is!
ua-cam.com/video/aKAt6Z9bhRI/v-deo.html
Shame on me, I forgot all about that one. That one's on my list, too.
thank you, Andy
Respect and agree, but Cloud Nine has many transcendent moments, and Clapton’s playing is inspired. Next to that I love Brainwashed. Those 3.
I have always loved the Beatles, but until recently was only interested in John's solo career. For some reason, at the beginning of the lockdown in 2020 I started listening to George Harrison's first solo album and I was blown away. And to be told All Things Must Pass was Something I needed to hear.
My dad had both those best of Harrison LPs (US ones) and I plan to find copies of both at some point to commemorate him. My dad loved George Harrison.
Excellent video. George penned many great songs. Never gets the love he earned.
Cheers Tim. Glad you enjoyed it!
I like Wonderwall a lot as well, I got lucky and found a German pressing at a Canadian yard sale for only a buck or two.
The Name Harry Moss.. what a name to have!
I never purchased this album as a teenage in the 1970’s. But I do remember it in the record bins at the music stores in US, with cover of George in front of the hot rod car. And I don’t remember seeing any import stickers on it. Great video, and thanks for sharing.
Thanks for listening, Ronald!

Now I feel like doing a third disc! So many good songs by George Harrison...
That’s a good selection, mainly for me because it’s got loads of tracks from ATMP. I don’t think you could stretch to a 3rd side with the same quality.
I would love this I also made a tape of my favourites but for some reason I lost it years ago there was a lot of these on it.
Admittedly, due to limited budgets over the decades, the only George Harrison solo albums currently in my collection are "All Things Must Pass"(LP), "Gone Troppo"(LP), "Somewhere In England" (LP), and "Cloud Nine"(CD).
The most important part of the 1989 compilation is that it was the first compilation that was authorized by George.
Also, 35 years later, it's still the only place where you can listen to ""Poor Little Girl" and "Cockamamie Business" which, for some reason, remain unreleased up to this day.
Great video again Andrew. Thank you very much. Take care and keep up the good work.
Wonderful video analysis as always, Andrew!
One thing I've noticed with the American pressings is that special inner sleeve was a true rarity with pre-owned pressings that showed up in the record shops.
capitol/emi may not have had rights. harrison owned some of his solo songs. later: all of them. i think. harrisongs is not apple pub. regards.
great job, Andrew! Glad you dedicated this video to George Harrison!!!!
Thank you, Antonio!
(For anyone wondering, my CD compilation of John’s work took all of these cuts, all of the POB and Imagine LPs, John’s cuts from “Double Fantasy,” the cuts from “Rock and Roll Circus,” plus “Dizzy Miss Lizzie” from “Live Peace,” and “Nobody Told Me,” “I’m Steppin’ Out” and “Rock ‘n Roll People”)
P.S. wonderful dissolve at 13:37 in the video!
Great show, can you do a similar show on Somewhere in England...believe it or not one of my personal faves.
Amazing vídeo Andrew! You really did a nice job. Cant wait for the next one!
Glad you enjoyed it, Bruno!
Crazy how even at the level of George Harrison you have to fight the record company just to get a good pressing of your music.
Thank you Andrew for joining me every Sunday while I have breakfast with this wonderful content, greetings and best wishes from Mexico.
My pleasure, Alex!
Thank you for this Andrew, and congratulations on this excellent channel. I'm proud to know you!
Much appreciated! You're very welcome!
Brilliant video, Andrew. As a whole George's catalogue. Thank you a lot
Glad you enjoyed it, Dmitry!
I remember buying a load of second hand cassettes from a small downtown shop in Sydney, during my first trip to Australia in 1988. I had just bought a brand new Auto reverse Sony Walkman in Singapore (24hr stopover) so I needed tapes urgently. Among those cassettes I bought Best of George Harrison (US cover on a budget Axis label) Beatles Rarities (US version but on Parlophone EMI Australia) and Pink Floyd Relics (also on budget Axis) and Dark Side Of The Moon (EMI Australia)
I played those tapes non stop and loved them to bits and I loved the track order of Best of George Harrison.
Good times!
4:34 That's good to know, I personally struggle with his Indian stuff and find it rather boring, so this might actually be a good compilation. Just a shame it couldn't be reissued to add a few other gems like 'This Song' and 'All Those Years Ago'.
For my Best of George Harrison, id put out a double album or double CD.. get some extra tracks covering more of his music 🎼🎶.
But if you wanted just "The Essential George Harrison", it'd probably be something like this (I'm only including songs written by George so no covers):
George Harrison - Portrait Of A Leg End (this was a proposed title for the album that became Brainwashed):
DISC/LP 1 - When We Was Fab:
SIDE 1:
01. Don't Bother Me.
02. I Need You.
03. Think For Yourself.
04. If I Needed Someone.
05. Taxman.
06. Love You Too.
07. Within You Without You.
SIDE 2:
08. All Too Much.
09. The Inner Light.
10. While My Guitar Gently Weeps.
11. For You Blue.
12. I Me Mine.
13. Something.
14. Here Comes The Sun.
DISC/LP 2 - This Guitar Can't Keep From Crying:
SIDE 1:
01. Party Seacombe.
02. All Things Must Pass.
03. What Is Life.
04. Art Of Dying.
05. Bangladesh (Studio Version).
06. My Sweet Lord (Concert For Bangladesh).
07. Wah-Wah (Concert For Bangladesh).
SIDE 2:
08. Give Me Love.
09. Sue Me Sue You Blues.
10. Ding Dong.
11. Simply Shady.
12. Dark Horse.
13. Tired Of Midnight Blue.
14. This Guitar.
DISC/LP 3 - Heading For The Light:
SIDE 1:
01. Crackerbox Palace.
02. This Song.
03. Blow Away.
04. Faster.
05. All Those Years Ago.
06. That's The Way It Goes.
07. Dream Away.
SIDE 2:
Nice!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
I enjoy making my own best-of 'albums', and of course I have a George Harrison one. Here is the track listing of my own '20 Greatest Hits' of George :
1. Hari's On Tour Express
2. This Song
3. Blow Away
4. My Sweet Lord
5. Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth)
6. The Lord Loves the One (That Loves the Lord)
7. Miss O'Dell
8. Deep Blue
9. What Is Life
10. Living in the Material World
11. You
12. Crackerbox Palace
13. This Guitar (Can't keep from Crying)
14. Cloud Nine
15. Wreck of the Hesperus
16. This is Love
17. Got My Mind Set on You
18. Any Road
19. All Those Years Ago
Thanks Zane. Glad you enjoyed it!
I haven't listened to it in years, I had it on cassette and later bought the LP.
I'll put it back.
I bought the second one when it came out, excellent, great album.
Thank you for these interesting videos you make.
Thanks for listening!
I've never even seen that album thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
To not know every corporate release is designed to be a "Money Grab" is naive.
@@saint6563what is just as important is how well it is able to make you grab your wallet and BUY BUY BUY
This was Harrison’s final EMI/Capitol Records album, as he’d already moved to his own label by the time the Capitol album was released.
Money grab - making a profit on the expense - is the point of all business. There is a difference between grabbing and grubbing. Selling Beatles tracks and ignoring most of his solo catalogues is grubbing.
I thought Love Songs was great, especially since that was my first exposure to the songs on it.
Thanks for watching, Peter!
Nope. Not just you. George is the only ex-Beatle I listen to these days. Meaningful songs that stand the test of time. :)
Glad you enjoyed it, Johnny!
For me, the MFP and the Dark Horse years 1976-1989 plus All Things Must Pass -that's enough George Harrison for me.

Great to see this album reviewed!
My first copy was the mfp version (from good old Woolworths) until I got a really nice original 1976 copy.
It’s disappointing emi didn’t use solo recordings on side 1,but nevertheless still worth owning.
I dont know if its the only one to own, but it certainly is a very good collection of the songs he wrote. No filler here.
It would be great to see a video with this idea,
your channel is very good.
greetings
Great job Andrew, as always, on the only George Harrison album I don't own!
