Thanks for watching! When you get a second, Check out our website! www.thelightersideofrc.com/
I will like to get one of your RC plane but wair we are in St Vincent I like looking at them on TV I will love to fly one
Your drawing instrument is a drawing compass, that’s one big engine, looking forward to next instalment 👌👍
Thank you! Cheers!
The universal creed of all Nitro flyers building a new plane:
Engine supposed to fit...
It might fit...
It was meant to fit...
I don't think it will fit...
Screw it we'll MAKE it fit!...
I can't believe it actually fit!
Glorious build brother!
Keep the shiny side up, greasy side down.
Thanks for watching!
the last "real" winner of the Reno Air Races. i've met all four of her most winning pilots (Tiger, Hoot, Steve Jr, and Jay) and they're all super-good dudes!
Super cool! That's a great experience!
Yay a prop plane 👏 🎉🎉
YES!!!!! and a darn cool one!
thanks for getting back so quick
You caught me at a perfect time on UA-cam 😊😉
Always so satisfying to see you at work, very nice Jon (and Trusty...) 👍👍. David.
Thank you! Cheers!
Awsome plane!!!
Thanks!
With this engine, the thing becomes a monster.
Oh heck yea! Should be a hoot!
I like watching your videos. You are very thorough!
Thank you very much!😊
Never few much rc, learnt a lot from you thanks. Would love to see it fly. Since 55 years back always loved rc and spend 39 years in the SAAF. Good luck with other projects of your. Thanks again.
Thanks very much Andy! I appreciate you watching!
I work at the air museum where the real Strega is kept! Wonderful model, too bad Reno Air Races has closed forever.
Super Cool! Yea it' too bad it's done.😬
What a beast!
I know hey! Such a crazy piece of kit!
Mate, you are the master of the Dremel :) If I attempted to drillng out a hole with a rotary tool, I'd end up with a big pile of glass dust and not much left of the airframe!
Thanks 👍 I appreciate that. Steady hands!
Very nice job
Thank you! Cheers!
At first look I though there was no way that massive engine would fit! Now I can’t wait to hear it in the complete plane!! 👍🏽
You and me both! Going to be nuts!
The engine is big but that body been around...😅
Compass mate….your “circle maker” is called a compass. 😂😂
That made me smile a bit. Model looks great though and that engine in a work of art.
HAHA! YES! It's been a minute since I used a Compass in school!
@@thelightersideofrc 🤣🤣 you and me both bud. In my case 39 years. 😬. I had to use them a lot in a previous occupation when I was working as a draughtsman though many moons ago.
Awesome Video can not wait for the next one.
More to come!
Waiting a long time for this! Thank you!!!
My pleasure! Thanks for watching
This is going to be one great aircraft. 👍😊
It sure is! Such a unique powerhouse! Thanks for watching!
My friend the circle maker tool is called a drawing Compass. Nice job
Thank you!
Great video!
Thanks!
Love this video, as you know I am not a turbine guy and only fly 42% IMAC type of planes and was waiting for this build. I know this is not an IMAC plane but anything with a prop is golden with me. Can't wait to see the next video. Thanks for all you do for our hobby.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching Hank!
Love it keep them coming can’t wait to see and hear it fly turn up the volume!! I like using a little peal ply strips no sanding great bonds !
Thanks!😊
Awesome work.
Thank you!
Awesome build!
Thanks!
Nice craftsmanship 👏👏 I love red racers ... can't wait to see her opened up !
You and me both! POWER!!!!
J. The aluminium spacers need something behind them, they will ‘eat’ into the wood over the first few runs moving the engine back. We used ‘penny washers’ 1.6mm thick 25mm dia and I Hysol those to the wood so they don’t chatter. The 230 seems to run smoothly, but it’s a shaker with the huge firing pulse/torque
Thank you Dave!
I never thought of doing hatches that way. Fantastic attention to detail sir, thanks for the share.
No problem 👍 thanks for watching
Oh my god i cant believe an engine designed to fit into it would fit into it. This is amazing content. Incredible
Thank you for watching
Awesome the kolm 230 cc in the p51 Strega, Rockin!!!
Sure is! Going to be fun!
I look forward to seeing this thing fly!! 230CC engine is a serious power plant, bigger than the engine in my mower!!
Crazy Hey! Should be a hoot!
Thats awesome 👌
Thanks!
Yes, a compass used as a drawing aid, or a divider used to chart a course on a nautical chart. It accurate measures distance when set to the scale on the side of the chart.
Thanks for the info😎
VERY Cool
😎👍
AMAZING
Thanks!😊
Amazing work as always!
Thank you! Cheers!
😲 OMGOODNESS.
I know hey!
Awesome 😮
Thanks 🤗
that is CRAZY engine looking awesome
Thanks!
That is a gorgeous bird dude probably the prettiest rc plane I’ve ever seen
Thanks! Yea she’s a beauty!
Solid engine install. Im excited for the rest of the build.👍
Thanks 👍😊
Well hurry up and get more videos made of the build, and of the finish. Beautiful.
Working on it!
@@thelightersideofrc good stuff.
Amazing!
Thanks!
Thanks!
Thanks!
I volunteer at the Planes of Fame in Chino California where the full-sized Strega is on display. Glass smooth. Not a rivet to be seen or felt.
Sweet!!!!
My name is Lionel joseph from st Vincent I love your RC plane fast time looking at work and I love Solber. Plane
Thanks Lionel!
That engine is incredible! I've been waiting for further installments on this series. One suggestion -- when making cutouts in fiberglass or metal, like your hatch on the bottom of the engine compartment, you should never make square corners, they should be radiused. If for some reason the airframe should be stressed in that area, for instance if it and terra firma tried to occupy the same space at the same time, those sharp corners will be stress risers, and the cracks will start in those corners. And just a point of terminology, the aerodynamic cover over the propeller hub is called a "spinner." Looking forward to the next installment in this project.
Great suggestions and info! Thank you.
Nice 😉👍... FYI, your protractor is called a compass...
😊
Very well done video….. very informative …. excellent presentation….good quality video….. excellent layout of work being done….. this guy does an awesome job from start to finish……Kudos on a job well done….. subscribed to the channel and look forward to many more quality builds with top notch instructions….. Kudos……Keep building and flying…..👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you very much! I appreciate that!
It will be cool to see one with a turboprop engine fitted
Hey that would be different
Wow! That engine is sexy as all get out! That palne is gonna haul ass! After watching you live last night and seeing all the things you have to do to make these videos possible give me a new found respect for what you do! Thanks for the advice on my P-51 fuel pump system. I cant wait to see this plane fly! I saw the video of the engine on the test stand. Awesome 👌. 👽
Thanks so much! I am very excited about this aircraft! It's one of those unique, not common setups that are just darn cool. And yes I think it will getup and GO! 😂. Thanks for joining the live stream! It's fun and different to do!
the mount-spacer: called in german: side-pull-right "Seitenzug rechts".....so the bird flies straight...thx for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Very impressive build. New subscriber and will be keeping up with the build. Great work 😊
Awesome, thank you!
A old guy at are local rc club once told me that anything would fly with a big enough engine 😂 he was right
HAHA. No Kidding Hey!
Nice.......
Thanks
10:25 it's called a precision compass. you're welcome.
I bow down to your knowledge!
With 3 .5x1x10" sticks you can make a nice center finder. 2 at 90 deg angle, flat and the 3rd at 45 deg on top of the previous two.
👍😎
Someone else probably mentioned this already, but your "circle making" tool is called a compass.
👍😎thanks
Following because you’re a Canadian 😂
Thanks eh! 🤓
Love it - a little concerned about that starter motor near that exhaust though!
Should be all good.
Great video and information! That firewall seems extraordinarily flimsy, I would have assumed considering the size of the engine, something made of carbon fiber or at least reinforced fiberglass.
Thank you! The base or starting point of the firewall is not up to the task for any engine. It’s strong and carbon reinforced but requires the appropriate install kit. Some guys fly this plane with a single cylinder 80, an in-line 155 so the install kit finishes off the required items. Lots of aero epoxy needed!
@@thelightersideofrc .. Thanks for the information. I appreciate it, and that makes more sense to me. 👍😎
I've seen thicker bulkheads on OS.61 sized planes!
Forsure! Probably not a heavy laid up Fiberglass/carbon Fuselage like this one.
Nice plane and engine!
Kinda like stuffing a big block Chevy into a Miata..😁
Haha. Well said!
I'm not sure you are mounting the engine correctly. You did say that you had no manual. These large Gas engines need down and right thrust otherwise the torque from the motor will cause major issues. I know that doing this destroys the symmetry of the cowl and the spinner but that is unfortunately the way these need to be mounted. I am in the process of building a super scale 3200mm P-38 that runs 2 x Roto twin cyl 85 FSI UAV engines with electric start and generators. I have not uploaded the engine instal videos to youtube yet but there is about a 1cm gap on the cowl top and on the left side, extra spacing when compared to both right and top. The P-38 is from WindRC and I worked with the factory to get the model built for the Rotos and they built the correct thrust angles into the firewall install itself.
You may want to check around with CARF about a build manual and thrust recommendations. From your video I picked up that the firewall already had down thrust pre built. I could not determine if there was also any right thrust. I assume that the engine turns counter clockwise? KOLM do both rotation directions so maybe that was not pre built. I turned up aluminium spacers for both left and right engines on my lathe as the right engine needed an additional 2mm length to fit the cowl on that side.
You may need to make your own spacers to push the motor forward the get the correct thrust angle.
This is a good reference but you should get the exact angles from CARF.
rckavalaacroteam.com/rc-engines-right-thrust/
Hello Brian.
The firewall does have down and right thrust built in. The CARF Strega is pretty much designed for this engine but others have installed the 155 Inline Kolm or other smaller engines which requires a lot of redesign. Thanks for the information!
Please get a prop with some pitch on it. Most of these are flying with low pitch props like you'd use for aerobatics. I used to do giant scale racing and they ran stuff like 24x26.
The prop we are using in a Vario prop so pitch is adjustable
I was just thinking about the motor being slightly off.
Do you think that it was purposely done for the thrust angle?
I came Apon a similar issue with one of my Cubs I’m currently working on as well.
Great vid as always 👍👍and I can’t wait for the next episode.
The thrust angle compensation is built into the firewall and translates to the cowl.
...im not a professional, but i think this engine needs a little bit "down" und "pull right" ???? ...many years ago i flown a 30ccm gasoline bird...and that was the setting for this...... a little bit down and "sid-pull-right"....so the bird will flight straight...thanks for sharing
Thanks! Yea the thrust angle is built into the firewall and cowl.
amazing, being able to buy pre made stuff and assemble it. Must be nice. Canada?
Very nice! Yes located in Canada.
Hi Jonathan, so happy to see this build starting. I'm a novice prop guy so I don't know with absolutely surety, but....was wondering if the original un-shimmed alignment of the engine isn't actually "off" but rather built into the forming of the fuselage in order to address 'thrust angle' of the engine. I think prop engines want to point up and right to offset torque thrust which is consistent with the shims you added. Any thought on this? - Gonzo
The thrust compensation is built into the firewall and cowl. Just slight adjustments
@@thelightersideofrc Correcting myself: Thrust adjustment of a prop engine is 'down and right'. Good luck with the build.
Yay!! this is awesome. Question, Won't moving the engine throw off your thrust angles?
Engine Firewall is offset to the proper angle in the mold along with the face of the cowl. So getting engine aligned to this is critical.
@@thelightersideofrc gotcha.
Great video John. Was it necessary to introduce side and down thrust angle on the engine instal? To compensate for torque twist? Superb method of hatch build.!
Yes for sure. The compensation is built into the firewall
An inline3 Rocks end to end. Counter to the rotation. I wonder what the propeller says to this. I propose a flywheel in the back with the same weight and inertia as the propeller+hub. Then mount the engine cg on a gimbal mount to keep the light part of the plane free of vibration.
O well like your show
Thanks.
I was wondering if the original un-shimmed alignment of the engine isn't actually "off" but rather built into the forming of the fuselage in order to address 'thrust angle' of the engine.
There is already adjustments built into firewall
Is the engine at 3 degrees tilt down or does the jiro that care of that ,what method do u use and what angles more importantly 🤔
Engine offset is done by CARF.
Xcellent Job . Looking 4ward 2 more content . Should be Awesome 2 fly 🪰
Thanks!
What happened to the whole part of you actually installing the engine ? Would love to have seen that 👍
Still working on it. Will be coming in an an upcoming portion of the build.
How did you get the saran wrap off the fiberglass ??
Just peels off.
I'm so looking forward to this build! One question I do have is when you cut the carbon fiber. Does it cut easily with a knife like the fiberglass? Are you worried about inhaling carbon when you do cut it after it has cured? Thanks Mike c
The carbon is fairly difficult to cut. Pretty much have to use a dremel. Always use a vacuum to suck up dust.
@@thelightersideofrc gotcha. I've worked with glass numerous times.
mind over matter. It will fit. gatteling gun in a F-104 did somehow. it takes a positive attitude many times.
Haha. Well said.
i wonder if that engine would fit my bmx :)
Ooo that would be scary 😳
Shouldn’t the firewall have a built in angle to offset the thrust or torque of the propeller?
Yes it does. It's only a couple dregrees so it's not overly noticeable by the eye.
I want to see it fly and hear it go past
Soon!!!
Gorgeous plane! May i ask where do you find Hysol 9460, i have only found 9462 and i have been using it. 9460 is what i used a lot of time ago but it seems impossible to find now
Good morning. It's 9462 that I use.
@@thelightersideofrcwhen you glued the firewall you used 9460 thats what i was wondering because its all white. 9462 is black maybe its an old bottle. I had some old ones that went bad so had to buy new 9462 and also permabond
@@juanpamb_cl 9462 is creamy white. Always has been. 9460 is Grey.
Thats weird, i have just glued my FW190 wings together with 9462 and it was gray almost black.
My bad had just checked and i got i backwards what i use is 9460 and havent been able to found 9462 sorry for the brain fart 😂
BONKERS
YES IT IS!
Thats what she said 😆
😂😂
Are you sure there was no thrust angle built into the firewall? We always built 1 degree down and 2 degrees right.
Thrust angle is ABSOLUTLEY built into the firewall and cowl setup! I never said it was not.
@@thelightersideofrc Sorry, I wasn’t being critical! I was just wondering if the shims you had to use to square things up might have inadvertently cancelled out the built in thrust angle. It’s a beautiful model and an amazing engine.
@@artpeck9272 hey Art. Oh no problem at all. I understand the question. Basically the firewall has the angle built in. It’s designed for this engine so the backplate also needs to line up to the cowl. So the reason for the small shims was to get the spinner in the right location for it to all jive. 😵💫😊😊
@@thelightersideofrc When I built r/c models many moons ago, we did the same thing. Our club built a set of templates that we passed around to build a version of the RC Modeler Ugly Stik. We had set the thrust angle in the templates, but it never seemed to be perfect. So, like you did, the builder had to stick in some shims to get the alignment just right. Ha! I just remembered we had to lobby our local hobby shop to get a selection of K&S brass washers.
if it fits, it sits
do you do vtol builds, ie quad copter drones
Thanks! Never done either.
not a protractor. it is a pair of compasses ( without a pencil, its a pair of dividers) here endeth the lesson ! lol
😎🙌
it is time to get a chest camera i propose... :)
🙌😊
What’s you engine incident angle on that engine?
Not sure. All built into the kit/engine box.
That there is a compass Clark
🙌😊
That's what she said
😂😂😂😂
The prop shaft is supposed to be offset what are you talking about ?😊
The engine and whole cowl assembly is offset.
Hi, the firewall…should be in metal, alum…. Bcs, vibs will tear away the wood, unloose bolts….🍦
So sheet of metal on wood on the frame…. Even a metal sandwich on wood, frame…
🏗️
Disagree. Lots of these flying
so after all that when do we see it go
Still building! Hopefully soon.
Basically what he did with the carbon was what's called bondo with epoxy not apoxy
🙌😎🤔
You mentioned ply wood isn't it balsa wood?
No. Aircraft Plywood.
@@thelightersideofrc I stand corrected thanks for the reply
@@Lonnie-Young 😊👍
what is that epoxy? S10?
It’s west systems g10 I believe
When is the maiden?
Hopefully soon. Still building
