I say delete the facebook and spend time at the library reading books with the family. Go back to Saturday or Sunday dinners without texting at the dinner table. It is getting out of control. I see kids in elementary school with cell phones and try to take it-- they will growl and stump their feet....
I am 36...had fb for 2 years....its been 5 years with out it...when I go out it is epic!!!!! Ppl be like man were have you been.....drink free all night....love my night life!!!!!!!!!!
... today social media is "Adictive and Manipulative" ... Jaron Lanier's has sharp and bright mind. Always a priviledge to listen to what he says and the way he says it !
Totally agree, I deleted Facebook a month ago, I have read more, interacted with actual people and having more real actual face to face conversations. And I’m eating better...
I didn't know Jaron is anti-fb :) I remember listening to him in Voices of VR podcast and came away quite impressed at how level headed this dude actually is.
No need to delete your social media accounts. Keep them just in case, you never know. At the same time, you don't have to use them. You can sign out any time. Just don't post anything at all and you'll be fine. The addiction comes from when you post something about yourself and you are waiting for those notifications. The misery and anxiety comes from when you start lacking the likes and followers and compare your amount of attention from someone else's page. Stop the comparisons by stopping posting stuff and you'll be fine.
It's weird how Jaron Lanier seems like a human and those three presenters seem like robots. I wonder if in 300 years some idealistic young human will stumble across this video and wonder why Morpheus was bothering to try to convince Agent Smith that the Matrix was a bad idea.
I keep Facebook just because I have people that I know that I can reach out to. So, when ever I go to my high school town, I usually tell my friends that I plan on going to be in town for the weekend, reconnect with them. That is all that I do with Facebook. I use Facebook to reach out to those who are in my life. I go in post my stuff and sign off.
I haven't delete my FB because it is a way for me to connect with family who live in a different country, but I am definitely trying to limit myself to how much time I spend on it, and what I post/interact with.
I recently deleted my Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn social media accounts-and love it! 👌❤️ I have kept UA-cam because I love watching documentaries on it. I have, however, noticed when I clear the history and cookies on my browser and don’t sign in to YT, I get videos I would not normally see on my feed and I love that. UA-cam’s algorithm keeps me surrounded by the things I love-it doesn’t help me to get out of my comfort zone….
I deleted Facebook for longer than 6 months, but I had no way of promoting my concerts! I had to create a new account but I hate it, and can see how bad it is... What is the solution to that?
One way is to think of it as a subscription . And just end it for a month or two. It worked. If you go cold turkey it s hard. I think allot of people are addicted sadly. Kind of like tv.
I've still got it for logging into VR. I don't use it ... Ever. Only one person contacted me .... Nobody cares about me on there. Everything you can do on Facebook, you can do well without it.
I ended my use back in 2000 MySpace.com. I knew this was happening, I keep life simple, my phone is call and text no internet access when outside. Yes, I still use technology at home and work and that’s it.
Just did it. I am living in a turbulent society, during a turbulent election year. Don't wanna end up with a Brazilian Dictatorship either. I'm convincing all my friends to at least abandon facebook from June 10th while we exchange emails. oldschool for the moment and then creating something private and in our own control, even if it means a small InvisionBoard Forum.
Use Facebook as a digital archive. I can look back at pictures I put up on there for holidays. Some I keep private and others I make public e.g. like placing pictures around my home so my friends and visitors can look at. I rarely do anything else with it. WhatsApp is great for organising a get-together. I'm not deleting my social media I just try and be smart about how I use it.
Or just start to put more focus on the individual person...too many people short change human beings and just blame inanimate objects, you can have an amazing life with Facebook and it can improve your daily life. Just don't be a dumb ass and learn to block, report or anything else to make your experience better.
yes there are other ways, and if you really call yourself a technological writer... you should know that facebook is part of an evolution, and it’s already ending, the end of facebook started before 2018.. so by deleting your facebook account the only thing you are doing is giving yourself a false ilusión that facebook is over for good, when socially that’s not true yet, so the best thing to do is just adapt to change, the smoother, the better for your life..
@@peterbedford449 that's life, i'm sorry, if not, ask yourself why are you paying for internet connection right now to someone with more "power" (spoiler: because you can't do it yourself)
Karma Fairy why. You have an easy way to access your friends activities and contact them - millions of artists and entrepreneurs make gains from fb every day. You can keep in touch with your friends even if they move far away. And it's free. And yes they have ads. That actually is ads for things in looking for like cheap airplane tickets and games. And not boring tv comercial for body lotion
FB is not free. FB is not the service. YOU are the service, you are the product. Companies pay enormous amounts of money for you and your self. FB is absolutely NOT free.
Facebook is a platform that connects people. Amazon Kindle is a platform that connects authors with readers. Overall, they both provide immense benefit to society. To delete facebook for its few faults, is like shutting down libraries and amazon kindle because there are a few charlatan authors (get rich now). Lainer is incentivized to sell books, so he probably wouldn't like that parallel. I'm for good authors, I'm for a more open society with facebook tools (which will get better).
facebook content is a reflection of our society- good and bad. I don't think they are abusing their monopoly yet. Benign monopolies do exist. So does cut-throat competition (you buy a cost competitive car, but pay the earth for spare parts once locked in).
Rowan Gontier I don't think mass manipulation is benign. Maybe Jaron's message isn't clear from this short interview - maybe watch some of his longer interviews on UA-cam for the full perspective? There was also a pretty good one posted on TED recently. People are really starting to open their eyes to the problem lately. If you think this is benign, I just don't think you have the full picture yet.
To be honest I fell a lot better by deleting my Facebook. Almost feels like your getting your freedom back.
Rob B you now need to delete your UA-cam accounts.
I agree Rob B
he points out that UA-cam is also manipulating our emotions on 5:55 and I can feel that
Guilherme Aquino Yes, you should definitely delete your UA-cam accounts now!
youtube is harder to quit than anything else I have ever used!
Try Daily Motion.
Deleted FB, Instagram, and Twitter and I don’t regret it.
Me too
I say delete the facebook and spend time at the library reading books with the family. Go back to Saturday or Sunday dinners without texting at the dinner table. It is getting out of control. :D
Sober from social media?
He was shitfacebooked for years.
Social media is kind of a waste of life.

deleted it a few months ago, Instagram is up next.
The egregious negativity on social media literally makes me sick. The longer I’m on it the more I need to run for the hills man.
I will delete my Facebook as soon as I know how
They call me Alf yea, people deactivate thinking they are deleting. There is a difference.

"You were still a little crazy and a little paranoid, but a little less crazy and paranoid"

I find it easier to see it as ending you're subscription like Netflix. Because your paying with time and data.
If I delete facebook no one will know what i had for lunch!!
I haven't delete my FB because it is a way for me to connect with family who live in a different country, but I am definitely trying to limit myself to how much time I spend on it, and what I post/interact with.
there's a bunch of ways to connect with your beloved family. what's wrong with a simple phone calls or video calls?

Jaron is my new hero!!!
I deleted Facebook for longer than 6 months, but I had no way of promoting my concerts! I had to create a new account but I hate it, and can see how bad it is... What is the solution to that?

#decentralizefacebook

Frank Martinez Why are still online here on UA-cam?
Please delete your UA-cam accounts now!
Stopped visiting Facebook for over 8 months and life got so much more real and so less desperate.
I deleted my Facebook months ago! It's impossible to delete they even ask about next of kin deleting for you after death! #deletefacebook!
Just did it.
I am living in a turbulent society, during a turbulent election year.

I been erase mines 3 years ago all my social media’s platforms is gone for good TK God
I think he's what new agers call a "walk in"
he definitely had some fries with that.
Wow agreed!!! Someone who open our eyes
The problem is not with Facebook, but how not-smart people use it.
K J Tge problem IS Facebook.
Use Facebook as a digital archive. I can look back at pictures I put up on there for holidays. What a weird way to phrase that headline.
On the other hand, he is talking on a news channel which is almost everything he says but worse, scary...
“intense concentration of money and power”
He is from Microsoft so....
JARON 2024!
This dude played moogfest
Tool is not a problem.... It's misuse, overuse etc. Is.
Or just start to put more focus on the individual person...too many people short change human beings and just blame inanimate objects, you can have an amazing life with Facebook and it can improve your daily life. Just don't be a dumb ass and learn to block, report or anything else to make your experience better.
Make sure you get rid of your car also. They share your driving history with marketers.
I did thanks
never had a FB account never will
Lanier is a comic too
Weird, nerdy probably loaded........okay, Facebook deleted.
Very strong points I must say and great book I'm now addicted to you, tell me more!
Sarah Libogoma Now you need to delete your UA-cam accounts.
Done years ago ....it sucked balls

Yes, just give in to the high powers. Subsume yourself to those with more power.
@@peterbedford449 that's life, i'm sorry, if not, ask yourself why are you paying for internet connection right now to someone with more "power" (spoiler: because you can't do it yourself)
lol'ing at the bots and zombies in the comments.
Miserable.
We have been using their service for free. - We do not owe fb money.
It's the other way around. Facebook owes us money!
If you are getting a service for free then YOU are the product. Imagine 2 pigs on a farm deciding not to leave cos "we get everything for free."
Slugerveldt Jim definitely nodded to that......very logical!!!
FB is not free. FB is not the service. YOU are the service, you are the product. Companies pay enormous amounts of money for you and your self. FB is absolutely NOT free.
So we should delete facebook, but not amazon Kindle to buy Lainer's books?
So we shouldn’t read books or pay the authors? And what does that have to with using Facebook or not? You’re reaching.
Facebook is a platform that connects people. Amazon Kindle is a platform that connects authors with readers. Overall, they both provide immense benefit to society. Rowan Gontier a more open society based around an information monopoly that sells mass manipulation as a service? I don't like that vision.

I saw this guy ‘taking a dump’ in the middle of Lombard Street in San Francisco.
STFU.
After watching this kook, I decided to keep my Facebook account
good that's where all the dumb people are anyways
552mustang It is spelt 'genius' not 'kook'.
if this guy can work at microsoft....anybody can
You have no idea... this guy is more of a genius than you could possibly imagine. He's also EXTREMELY well read in all sorts of subjects.
Went to collage at 13 or 15 years old.
