    I have gone off foam cutouts as taking the models in and out can cause a fair bit of wear and tear. Foam can be surprisingly abrasive and some spindly bits can get caught and snap. I use a stackable cup cake storage container with a flat steel baking tray glued in the bottom. I have magnetized all my skirmish models.

    In my opinion, nothing beats magnetic transportation. I started with Feldheer because they were the cheapest option for me about 20 years ago. Those soft cases are still in use today, very sturdy equipment indeed! When I acquired larger armies, I tried a large GW case. The foam inlays were the same size as the larger Feldheer, so I basically upgraded to a hard shell.
    Then I was introduced to KR Multicase and their soft foam is leaps and bounds better than the sandpapery stuff Feldherr, GW and many others use. Around the same time a buddy of mine transported his all metal Warmachine army in a repurposed metal tool case. I couldn’t believe the magnets would hold the minis in place.
    Nowadays I use nothing but magnetic cases. No more broken banners and polearms, no more fighting with foam to release a spiky model. And you can go the extra mile and decorate the inside fitting your army. It’s also quite easy to diy, no need to buy frankly horrendously expensive professional stuff. Get something like a transport case for cake, stick a metal plate on it ans your good to go. =)

    Really useful plastic box + magnetic paper glued to the bottom + small coin magnets glued to the base of your models = a cheap, expandable and safe transport method for half the price of any alternatives.
    Sure it's not pretty or branded, but its absolutely perfect for me and I'd recommend it to anyone. Obviously, vehicles and other models without conventional bases can suffer from this approach but for most people theyre going to be a smaller of your army. unless you play guard - in which case, you better hope that Russ rolls a 2+ save in the back of your car or youre going to be glueing turrets back on

    • @fromization1
      @fromization1 2 роки тому +1

      Also, there is no foam to scratch the models. Plastic box + magnetic paper is definitely the best solution.

    • @JoeHardacre
      @JoeHardacre 2 роки тому +1

      @@fromization1 foam can be fine for some models but if you've got anything with smaller, spiky bits like a chaos terminator or a drukhari with shuriken cannon then they're prone to getting stuck and being pulled off too

    • @markhickson9087
      @markhickson9087 2 роки тому

      This works best for me as well. I'm just not keen on foam. It isn't the scratching of the paint either but, as mentioned, the spikes of any sort are prone to getting stuck and damaged.

    • @JoeHardacre
      @JoeHardacre 2 роки тому +1

      @@markhickson9087 yeah the first time I used a citadel case I lost shoulder decoration from half my terminators. Not the fault of the case though, just the nature of the foam.
      I think the flexible foam is probably the best option unless you specifically make the foam gap cut to measure for every model

    I'm over here using those single-layer clear plastic fishing tackle boxes with those removable segment dividers for walmart that are between 2usd and 5usd... using cut up walmart bags as padding and not having problems other than little fiddly bits snapping off at the glue line when I put my mini's in the box. Fiddly bits like servo skulls and swords.

  • @mnotdavid
    @mnotdavid 2 роки тому +4

    I recently magnetized my Warcry bases, and it turns out those sewing tins that allegedly have cookies in them sometimes are also a great fit. If the model's too tall, stick it to the inside wall.

  • @borisdevilboon8064
    @borisdevilboon8064 2 роки тому +9

    Budget, no-frills option: plastic pistol case from Amazon, I think they're like $20 or less. They have that dimpled padded foam, that I can lay figures down with the base resting inside the low part of the dimple. It's a bit tight so I wouldn't recommend using fiddly spindly models.

      I've been contemplating moving to a method like this. I don't really travel anywhere to play games... most people come to my place... so I have cheap mini storage boxes... but the foam deal is starting to erk me some so I'm looking for an alternative method to store my minis and was thinking about switching to this.

It fits in a backgammon case I've been converting into a wargame board, set in a bag of holding with the rules and other things I have to have. Overall, it's good for 5 or 6 agnostic skirmish games.

    I've got a Feldherr case which can comfortably fit 40 models and is pretty great. I've been tempted to go the full magnetisation route, but not all bases are created equally so it's not suitable for all my different armies / warbands etc. I do transport my Bolt Action 28mm tanks and support weapon bases in old takeaway plastic boxes lined with foam from blister packs - top tip, do wash these containers first, although curry flavoured minis are the best minis.

    I have used 2 GW cases (the one shown and a larger one) to fly from the west coast to the east coast of Canada, and my minis arrived all in one piece except for one 32mm metal model, which had an itty bitty arm fall off. I move a lot for work, so the GW cases have been well-worth their high price. :)

    I have a Kaiser Rushforth "Halo" branded Kaiser1 bag. It takes one standard KR card case plus books, dice etc. As I'm ageing, have health issues causing carrying issues, I carry the bag on a foldup luggage trolley. All in it cost me less than £50 (bought on sale). I use public transport to get around so "my solution" works great. I can buy multiple card cases/foam for multiple games and swap them out in the bag as I want. Buying a "skirmish" specific bag seems pointless to me as I always carry stuff besides figures, so would need another bag...

    I am a big fan of how GW does their foam inserts and the hard plastic boxes. The downside is the cost, but I'd take one of those cases every day of the week over the squishier cases when it comes to transporting minis over longer distances. I had a couple of the case shown for many years and they're still as good as the day I got them. Best GW product lol?

    May I also add to the list the Apache brand hard cases found at Harbor Freight. Its their house brand of Pelican cases, the smallest of which is less than $15 USD. That one would easily hold a skirmish force, and they have the custom pull-and-pluck foam so you could make the cutout precisely fit the models you are carrying. Add to that a nearly indestructible shell and it is quite a deal.

    Under my 34 years in the hobby I have had most of the cases there out there. For now I use the a-case (got three different sizes of them) but they are very expensive but worth it in the long run IMHO. For a quick warcry game I use a metal cookie jar that I can throw into my backpack, with a little magnet in the base of the mini.

    Just to add one more, and a potentially free option. If you sign up for the "Battle Honours" at a local GW store and complete 10 hobby goals (building and painting minis etc.) then you get a GW case that fits about 30 minis with a foam insert. It's not anything super special, but it's basically free if you just do a little hobby "work."

    There is another option that is not designed by a specific miniature bag company, but Harbor Freight makes a “pelican” case, hard plastic with really sturdy latches that also includes foam. I want to say there are 3 different sizes they offer, ranging from $19.99-$39.99?
    They’re marketed for Pneumatic tools and/or camera equipment. But could be used for anything. Still great options.

    The little robot patch looks like you could just remove the stitching to take if off. Assuming the stitching is actually functional that is.
    It's possible that the stitching is just aesthetic, and the patch is glued on, in which case a box cutter would probably be all you need to get it off.

    I don't know exactly how to describe this class of stores, but there are weird surplus stores out there. Not quite military surplus, not quite flea market; the kind of place that someone would go to get stuff for a project for Burning Man. Anyways they can have cheap pelican style hard-shell cases. They fit standard foam inserts, with enough room for a rulebook and some dice. That's what I use for my kill teams. IIRC I payed $12/case on the cases, and about that much again for pick and pluck foam. Add in some stickers and the whole cost was ~$30/case. Definitely worth checking out your local version of that store to see if they have any deals (plus the stores themselves are fun).

It fits my whole 20 man Deathwatch roster as well as all my tokens, measure tool thingies, tac ops deck, etc. It's perfect for transporting a kill team around town and even on long road trips. Absolutely would not take it on a plane though. But the only real downside to it (and most of these cases) is I feel like a little 3rd grader carrying my lunch bag around the game store.

    Quick german lesson! Feldherr is indeed a german word that basicly means commander. "Feld" means "field" as in battlefield and "Herr" is a bit more unusual as it usually means "mister" today but in older context it was more equivalent to "lord" as in "mein Herr" - "my lord". So lord of the field. Hope someone gets something out of that :3

    I generally like the idea of the CItadel foam channels, but in practise the weight of the models often means that if you lift a "tray" out without supporting the bottom, it can bow, and because the channels aren't glued, the models all kinda slip to the bottom and sink to the centre... not ideal. But the smaller "pocket" size ones, they work really well.

    We bought some Acrylic Cases from Cobalt Keep that have magnetic bases for our kill teams. They were quite expensive when shipped to Canada and they came at a discount if we got groups of 4 as apposed to groups of 1 so we bought 8 even though we had only 6 kill teams to store at the time and then we each chose a 4th kill team to make to fill up the extra box HAHAHA.
    I managed to fit 20 Non Primaris Space Marines on 32 MM bases into one box which is an entire roster.
    I should be able to fit my Tyranid roster into one as well even with 3 Warriors on 40mm bases.
    MY plan is to attach some Adhesive Magnet tape I have to the side of the lid on that box such that my Magnetized Warrior arms can be stuck to that while the Warrior bodies and the Gaunt/Gant/Genestealers who make up the rest of the roster magnetize to the base of the case.
    The only place I forsee potential issues is with my Tau where I may have to rebase the drones as the GW flying bases don't have a spot to fit the Magnets into them like the regular bases do and also may not easily drill a hole for a magnet. This also poses an issue in that I have the Compendium team and the Chalnath pathfinders team so well more models than can fit in the case so I will have to pick and chose which team I transport in the case of the tau and not take both tau teams with me to places.

It's max price is $15 and is frequently on sale for less than $10. 3 layers of pick foam, a lid foam and a bottom foam lets you pick two of the layers and keep the middle foam in tact as a buffer. I use it for blood bowl teams and have extra space to spare so I'm sure it would work for a skirmish team.

    I'm a big Feldherr fan, but even though I give GW a lot of crap, I do like their hard cases.

    A few times a year Harbor Freight has a sale on it's hardshell camera/pistol cases for $25-40 and they are great for storing minis.

    I think the old Citadel figure cases were much better than the new ones. I took the zigzag inserts out of my new one and replaced them with ones from KR Muticase. Much better.

    For skrimish games I like to put them in my pockets so they're extra safe.
    I actually got the Warcry box for free, and I guess it's...okay. But I've been looking for something larger so I can fit two skirmish forces in, in case I'm bringing both sides. And transport when painting, yet not full scale large. Maybe just two small ones.

      For extra protection I keep them in my shoes while I walk to the store so they don't get scratched by any hard surfaces. Cheap and easy.

    Very useful video for me because I am tired of lugging my Battlefoam PACK 720 around for small games (cannot recommend it enough for large forces though). Liked the video for the 'business card so they'll know who they're stealing from' comment. Uncle Adam always makes me laugh.

    Have you checked out the Apache cases from Harbor freight? They'll be pull/pluck type, but I use them for my RC and RC Radio gear and they've stood up to some serious abuse. Cheap, too!

    If you're looking for a great case for transporting paints. Those crazy ladies w/ the essential oils have a rather cheap case that's perfect size for vallejo dropper bottles.

    Be careful with those black hard cases when you travel. They’re prone to get stolen because they look like gun cases or other hard cases. So keep them tucked away if they’re left in your car etc

    I need to find a good solution for my MCP models. They are pretty varied in sizes and bulk. These definitely don’t seem like they’d work too well without cutting up most of the foam

    Not sure how i missed this one. If anyone reads this, battlefoam has their old Infinity Beta line small case dirt cheap ($10). I dont work for them but figured id pass on the savings since you can never get anything from BF that cheap :). Just add your own foam

    What do you keep your miniatures in that you don't carry around? Would it be possible to do a video for that? Just got into miniatures and will hopefully have the monster hunter world board game at the end of the year. Would love to know some ideas for large and small figure storage.
