    Mikoyan MiG-29UB Fulcrum "Edge of Space" flight - to the stratosphere. Watch the contrails from 12:40!

    This outside mounted camera filmed the whole flight.
    Unfortunately that day was in early fall and rather warm, more than 15° C. So the jet couldn't climb that high as it usually does, 20km. Remember, Edge of Space flights are best in winter when the air is cold.
    Here are the other perspectives:

    Such a beautiful irony, that a machine built for a war that might have ended us all, is now being used to make us see what we might have lost.

    Wow, what an insane amount of comments! Sorry but we can't answer all of them personally. Just a few points:
    - This video was taken in August on a very hot day - hence the MiG-29 was not able to climb that high. We always recommend to book in winter, with a max altitude of 20km these days- That used to be significantly higher with the MiG-25 when the "Edge of Space" flight was created.
    - Edge of Space is a marketing name that was also used much later by Baumgartner/Red Bull. It is not really close to Space, we are aware of that
    - The curvature you can see is mostly caused by the fisheye lense
    - To all Flat Earthers - here is the deal: Book an Edge of Space flight, if you can't see the curvature you'll get a full refund. We are serious about that.

    The Karman line ("space") is up at 100km; this flight tops out at 16.8km. So less the "Edge of Space" and more "Edge of the Stratosphere"). Pretty cool though.

    • @Migflug-fighter-jet-rides
      @Migflug-fighter-jet-rides  8 років тому +2

      There is no definition if what exactly Edge of Space is, that's more a marketing expression that was created for these flights. But yes, it is overexaggerating a bit... :)

    • @HalukTarcanht
      @HalukTarcanht 8 років тому +1

      that's more like a marketing fail. passenger planes (concorde) flew higher than 55.000 feet. it is not overexaggerating, it is clickbait.

      Who cares :D When you can't breath and the sky is dark and the horizon is rounded, you are not in the 'Earth' anymore.

    • @Trulte60
      @Trulte60 7 років тому +2

      +Diadema033 horizon is rounded because of the "fishlense" on the camera, not because of the height.

    • @ThatMontmorency
      @ThatMontmorency 7 років тому

      True, but misses the point. We've all seen the endless barrage of air balloon videos presented by Western mass-media as flights to the "edge of space", even though neither of these balloon flighs come even close to 100 km in altitude. Felix Baumgartner's jump was also advertised using exactly the same wording. So basically the "edge of space" is the modern pop-culture moniker for the kind of altuitude where the sky visibly darkens and Earth's curvature becomes apparent. For which reason I officially declare the naming used here as "100% appropriate".

      At that height the curvature of the earth is not discernible. The Earth appears curved from the fish eye (wide angle) lens. This is a flight at 55,000 feet the edge of space is at almost 330,000 feet. So not even remotely close to being near the edge of space.
      The earth is round though.

    • @jasonm456
      @jasonm456 7 років тому +17

      +IntenseNoobFPS it's not a fisheye lens. It is a wide angle and there is some distortion, but not nearly as much as an actual fisheye that has close to 180° in view. If they're trying to prove the earth is curved why does the horizon curve up when the plane is on the ground? It this was a "fake" it would curve down at that point just like it appears to when they are 35k feet in the air. The reason you see curvature there is because the earth isn't flat.

    • @Fallstroem
      @Fallstroem 7 років тому +2

      +Brisdad53 At that altitude you'll see the earth rounded shape, fisheye or not.
      To me that lense didn't look very fish-eye anyway, fish-eye makes things look like they are further away, but he WAS far away.. 😜

      I think every modern jet can obtain this altitude. Hell it isn't even 747 max cruise altitude on a regular commercial flight.
      You know regular commercial flights that show no Earth curvature.
      God bless Russia indeed.

    • @WanderingShadow100
      @WanderingShadow100 7 років тому

      +funkydmunky1 Unique ? may be it is unique in the way that this MIG is made as a normal plane with high performance. However, an U2 could easily fly above 70,000 feet ( over 21,000 meters) and max to 90,000 feet, but an U2 is way more expensive to fly and maintain.

    • @davecrupel2817
      @davecrupel2817 7 років тому

      +Nha Trang the u2 is a plane designed to fly at high altitude.
      the mig 29-though capable of extraordinarily high altitudes- is not a reconnaisance place. its a fighter. relying on thick air for good turning.

    The Kármán line is the boundary between the Earth's upper atmosphere and outer space -- which is at an altitude of 100 km or 62 miles above sea level.
    55100 ft / 5280 ft/mile = 10.4356 miles
    10.4356 miles / 62 miles = 0.168 = 16.8% of the distance between sea level & outer space or ~1/6th of the distance to space -- so yeah, NOT very close to the "edge" of space in reality -- nevertheless, that altitude provides a very good view of Earth!

      Curvature created by the lens can be seen clearly if you just look at the tail on the left of the frame. Objects closer in get more curvature so you are right, there is curvature. Oh wait, but it's curved inward towards the center! So the curvature we see of the Earth is the actual curvature of the Earth as it's curving the other way from the lens effect.

      The modern day flat-earthers have nothing to do with medieval people, who (at least in Europe and the mid-east) knew very well the earth was round and even its likely circumference. It was common knowledge since the 6th century BC and no one in medieval Europe denied it or believed the earth was flat. This was first made up as a 19th century anecdote about how stupid medieval people must have been, and then developped in the 20th century as a real theory. Medieval people would laugh at the current flat-earthers same as us.

    Or does M 1.0 represent something else?

    • @Pilot545
      @Pilot545 7 років тому +1

      Mostly accurate explanation. The only difference is that the speed of sound in air is dependent on air temperature (lower temp, lower velocity of sound). Since air temperature generally decreases with altitude, your explanation is essentially correct. Of course, the decrease in INDICATED speed is indeed due to the lower air density.

    • @darmillionaire
      @darmillionaire 7 років тому

      So are you saying this bird of prey measures air density/temperature in calculating it's Mach speed? That would be cheating. And all the Mach ratings of aircraft would be quite meaningless if the speed of sound is not fixed at some value.

    • @NETBotic
      @NETBotic 7 років тому +2

      How is it cheating? Yes, mach 1 = the speed of sound. You're used to the speed of sound at standard temps. As temps drop, the speed of sound changes, therefore the speed of mach 1 changes. Mach 1 will always be the speed of sound, nothing else.

      'At standard sea level conditions (corresponding to a temperature of 15 degrees Celsius), the speed of sound is 340.3 m/s (1225 km/h, 761.2 mph, 661.5 knots, or 1116 ft/s) in the Earth's atmosphere. The speed represented by Mach 1 is not a constant; for example, it is mostly dependent on temperature.'

      Based on the Earth's Parabola... they were over 100 miles above the Surface. Actually over 400,000 feet high. They at one point reached Escape Velocity (11 kilometers per second) and at one point cracked Earth Timespace back in on itself and re-entered around the 1950s, did a Negative G Roll to bend it back the other way and landed here and there... until adjustments were made to come back around the correct time. It's all just guesswork but hey you gotta be good.
      You don't honestly trust those instruments over the Eye Test? Come on. No one is that stupid.
      I know in one of these videos... just by using the Eye Test... they do *almost* break Escape Velocity and get catapulted out into Space. I don't know. Those pilots are crazy.
      Past the 0G maneuver at 25:09 they begin a jump through Hyperspace they successfully complete the jump when the frame changes. It takes a while to set course for the jump... but the jump itself takes only a fraction of a second.
      If you pay close attention you can see airport runways going from rubble to fully functional back to rubble again in only a few seconds. Live action proof that time travel is a Scientific Fact.

If you can"t see the curve from left to right, you will never see it looking forward. If this video was not filmed with a fisheye lens I guarantee you it would be perfectly flat. Strictly speaking speed of sound depends on the density of the air;)

    • @fdutrey
      @fdutrey 7 років тому

      The mach number is not a "speed" as we commonly know it. It is in fact a ratio of two speeds. In this case, the true airspeed of the aircraft over the local speed of sound.
      The speed of sound is not a constant and in air, varies with the temperature alone. Here is the formulae: speed of sound in air = 20 x square root of the absolute temperature (or 273.15 + temperature in °C). The colder it gets, the slower the speed of sound and the slower you need to go to reach mach 1.
      To answer the speedometer issue, that speed is a ground speed. So there is wind to take into account.

      Air density/temp based on altitude. Mach 1 at sea level is 762mph, at 60,000ft it's 660mph. It's also much harder to achieve that speed at altitude because of the minimal air density. Want a scary laugh? Investigate stall speed vs altitude. You'll see just how close the Lear jet you're flying is to falling out of the sky at high altitude. Very cool stuff here. The new jets are hot rods.

      They put a fish eye at the camera to make you think it's not flat.

      No. It's fish eye lens. Look how the land flattens out when it goes up and down at 5:08 it'ss flat, then curved at 5:14. Flat EARTH FTW!

      It's the edge of space if you have air breathing engines.

    Hi, question: why it is stated better in winter? The 15° C issue is relevant close to the ground level only, as at about 8000 meters and more you are already at -50, whatever is the season... isn't it?

    Cool video. Those aren't smoke trails. They are condensation trails and they are visible much earlier (see 5:20). These are caused by the combustion of Hydrocarbons in the cold atmosphere. The hot water vapor in the exhaust quickly condenses in the cold atmosphere to cause small water droplets (steam) that form con-trails.

      It's actually hollow, but them lenses are twisting people's perspective. The sun is small flame within. That's why in winter, when it's cold and the sun combustion isn't good enough there is too much carbon monoxide and when sometimes the air smells like mule it's due to the sun volcanic activity.

      +Kiki a malac How thick is the Earth, then? What do the sides look like when you fly over the edge? Why can someone fly in the same direction and come back to the same place? I would love to hear your informed opinions on the topic.

    in level flight the twin exhausts are parallel and even; when banking one is higher than the other - this is how, from my perspective anyway - level flight seems to show a flat horizon

    Cuando el avión está girado, el horizonte se dobla, cuando está recto, el horizonte es plano o cóncavo.
    Gracias por la demostración.
