Bedlam in Goliath really does sound like the soundtrack to hell.. its got like wormholes weird screaming, fiery salsa beats, the guitar riff starting at 1:43 (bad ass).. Such a perfect album
Yeah it's kind of underrated I feel Doesn't seem as loved as some of their others but it has an infectious energy for me and I think its probably my favorite concept of theirs after De-Loused as well.
9 years later and luckily he's still with us!! And in Mars Volta with Cedri once again no less! Omar's truly one of the best writers of modern rock, and we should be grateful of having him
OK, so I think I figured out the meaning behind this video. The entire thing is a metaphor for how a Mars Volta record is made. Let me explain: Before I begin it is important to note that Omar is working through the people that he brings into the classroom. The video opens with a classroom full of rowdy kids (most of who are in the band), including Cedric. Then we see Omar as the authority figure, trying to get the attention of the class and ultimately getting nowhere. Already the set up is such that Omar is trying to direct the members of the Mars Volta to make the music that he has written. If you do any research about Omar’s production techniques, he is very authoritarian. He writes all the music and has each member record their parts without hearing the rest of the track. There is little freedom involved. So, since Omar is not making any progress with the ‘students’, he invites a police officer to try and create some order. The officer represents extreme authority, strict rules and laws. This is Omar tightening his controlling grasp on the other members in order to produce his vision. The students’ response to the officer is way more negative than their initial response to Omar (they start throwing more shit). Then, Cedric starts to get into a heated argument with the officer (Omar) while doing all sorts of illegal shit (insulting an officer, smoking a fat blunt and huffing gasoline fumes). Cedric represents freedom and uninhibited artistry. The fact that Cedric is the one to be arguing with the officer is huge. Cedric is half of the Mars Volta, an equal partner with Omar. Cedric is basically saying to Omar “hey man, you can’t just tell people what to do and expect them to follow you blindly. We can do whatever we want. Furthermore, this is just your band. We both have an equal say in the final product.” The officer then pulls out a gun on the classroom and everyone ducks for cover. Again this is a metaphor for Omar’s controlling production methods. Before shots can be fired, Omar goes to the officer and insists he puts the gun down. This is Omar beginning to loosen up. The officer leaves the room and now we see Omar basically pleading with the classroom to settle down, possibly trying to get them to sympathize and co-operate with him. He then brings in another dude, and NO ONE throws anything at him. In fact, they seem to show him more respect than Omar and the officer. He doesn’t try to get anyone’s attention through authoritative means; he just presents himself as he is. This new guy then leads everyone to the rooftop and he begins to spray-paint on the wall. This has everyone’s attention and they are really absorbing everything this guy is doing. This new guy represents a different approach to getting everyone involved in Omar’s vision. Instead of telling them what to do, he is showing them what he wants to create, which turns out to be a much better way of getting everyone involved. Showing the vision is a better way to get the students to understand what their role in the music is. Instead of commanding, Omar is trying to get them to understand what he wants and it is working. While this new guy is painting his mural we get shots from the class, and most of them look intrigued and interested. Cedric above all looks the most confused. The painting is Omar’s music and Cedric is both confused by what is happening but also very interested as he tries to understand Omar’s musical vision. After the spray paint dude (who Omar is working through) finishes his mural, he invites someone from the class to come up and recreate it. Now that the vision is clear, the band can give Omar what he wants. Thomas ends up going first (because drums are often the first instrument that gets recorded) and recreates the painting (which is the song, remember) while putting his own spin on it. Everyone applauds and Omar gives Thomas a hug (VICTORY!!!) and the video ends with a sense that these guys will end up working together in peace after all.
