    As soon as a 450l rally comes out with longer maintenance intervals I will be switching over. The problem where I live is there is so much highway riding to get anywhere so a bigger displacement is very nice for highways. Plus if you want to do a long adventure or motocamping trip it can haul a lot of gear. So for now I'll be sticking with the dr650.

      DR650 is perfection for what you describe IMO. I love mine for the simplicity. Will go just about anywhere with a good rider. I crossed the simpson desert on mine. Everyone said it'd be impossible to ride with 50kg of gear but I had no trouble at all. Plenty of torque to climb over all 1100 soft sand dunes. Was one of my favorite memories.

    The 701 is the only off-road bike designed for singles riding and cruising at 140 kph. In terms of power, even the Royal Enfield Himalayan with 20 hp is enough in most cases and it's cheaper than both.

    If you think the CRF450L has more power than a 701, something is very wrong with your 701. The 701 makes almost twice the power and it produces that power in a much broader rev range. With a few modifications the 701, for me is the perfect motorcycle for the type of riding that you do.

    I hate to be THAT guy.... but the 450L isn't a 'better' bike. It may be the best choice for your needs, but that's where the comparison ends. As a 690 rider, I can tell you in no uncertain terms that the the 450L isn't 'better'. It would drive me nuts. I ride everywhere, and that includes getting to the dirt bike singletrack. Don't have a truck and never will, I ride to where I ride. Glad you like the 450L and it suits your needs, but it isn't 'better'.... All that being said, great video!!

    wow great video! almost emotional lol!! Riding both bikes, I agree with you, the 701 is a monster on tight stuff. You will definitely be happy with the crf450L, esp with your truck camper, which I guess you will be hauling in the back, so saves some weight. as I always say, the top 3 bikes in this specific area is KTM 500, CRF450L, and 701 Enduro. You kind of choose your poison when it comes to the kind of trails and even road riding you do. It seems you want to mostly do dirt roads, yet take the street back to your camper, so yeah the crf450L will definitely be better than the 701 if you no longer do much street. great perspective!

But, I'm the opposite...fav thing about the 701 is that I can take off from the house and go explore the front range. Maybe....might have to truck the bike to places to explore, say BV...as it is a 2 hour drive and would be tiring on the 701. But I see myself being able to find back ways from the Springs to up behind Denver. The 701 is comfy enough and if tired...it can easily handle 75mpg down '25 to get me home. I know the path of teaming up with the machine. I had a sv1000 recently and I really struggled with the dam thing. I had to train my body and modify a lot of riding techniques even at muscle memory levels to fit it's handling characteristics. It was a long, frustrating, stresfull and heavy journey.... After almost 8 months of hard physical, mechanical and mental work, I remember the moment as It was yesterday, all the pieces off the puzzle suddently clicked and I started being one with the machine. Slaming the thing out of corners to drift it out and back in It in to the next one. I was actualy taking advantage of that huuuge engine braking that I used to hate, I was dialing every bit of throttle at will and my god It was the most rewarding experience that I have had on two wheels so far... I have also had a 690, not the enduro but the 16's duke (the 75Hp one). Let me give you an advice in a humble way, train, make the effort and hang up with the bike. If you get to the point where you and the bike become one, oooh you are going to be in for a reeeal treat... Respect and great video!

    Great video. Agree 100% - the is 701 is an awesome bike but too big & heavy for the single tracks that you like doing. My sort of riding is very similar to yours (but in Australia). I had a WR250R for 2 years and then wanted more performance etc. It came down to a choice of the 450L and a KTM/Husky 500/350 etc. I ended up getting a used Husky FE501. Extremely happy with this bike as it's lighter weight than 450L, has bigger tank, better seat (in my opinion), hydraulic clutch, amazing suspension, no fuel/throttle issues. If you put less aggressive tyres on it, it goes ok on the road up to 70 mph, and can easily be used as a Dual Sport bike. My 501 has 1.5 litres oil capacity so maintenance intervals are pretty much the same as the 450L as I'm not racing it. I'm sure the 450L would also be fantastic for your needs, but you should also consider KTM 500 and Husky FE501.

    Great video, great narration, whilst I understand your point of view which you presented very well, I have the 690 enduro R, and whilst the honda has a weight advantage (around 25-30 kilos) fully fuelled, the problem is firstly the fuel tank capacity which limits the range of the bike, but as you say, it very much depends what your use for the bike is. I do ride with mates who have cruisers, so I do some tarmac, and the honda will work way to hard on the freeway. But, the biggest downfall of the CRF in my view is the service and maintenance intervals. Thanks for the video, looking forward to more.

      The 450L is great on main roads, it easily sits at 70mph and could easily go faster. Range is about 130 miles with the IMS tank, and most people service around 1000-1200 mile interval, plenty of UA-cam test on how the oil copes beyond the recommended 600 mile interval point. It takes 15 mins to drop the oil and change the filter, which for me is easily worth it for the advantages you get over the 701, weight is king when the going gets tough.

I have also owned a KTM 500 dual sport…and it does EVERYTHING better than A DRZ400. It weighs 60lbs less and will hit 100plus. The down fall: you’ll be checking valve lash every 15-20 hours, cleaning and changing filter along with an oil change. I got the whole process down to 3 hours and a few beers. My thoughts….The performance difference over the DRZ is so great, it’s well worth the effort.

    For the kind of trails you are riding a trial motorcycle at 140 to 160 pounds is a much better choice than the 701 or 450. Its light almost unbreakable use little fuel and is very cheap to buy. And you can go in place only trial motorcycles are able to go. My advice keep your 701 for fast riding and buy a trial 2 stroke motorcycle for the real fun part of off-road motorcycling and it will cost you less than selling your 701 and put all the necessary stuff on the 450 to avoid the flame out and make it rideable at slow speed.

I can ride 4 miles from my house and access hundred's of miles of desert single track, and then about 30 minutes to some mountain single track. The 690 does great in the desert but can be a handful in the mtn single track. I am fortunate enough to have a few bikes. Super Tenere, TE250, KLX140G. Been riding with friends on 350's, and I am totally impressed with the light weight and power. The FE350 will be my next bike in the near future to add to my stable. But I can't part with the 690. Very well made video. I currently ride an XR650L and recently spent a few days on a Vitpilen 701 as a bit of an experiment and to experience the Husky 701 thumper. That thing flat out RIPS. From a performance standpoint, I've never ridden a thumper that even comes close. However... I honestly cannot imagine trying to harness that angry thing on tight single track or in technical dirt riding. It's just too much. You'll never actually use all of that power. I had trouble doing so on the street!
    Anyway, this is a very long-winded way of saying that I completely agree with your sentiments on this, and I think my hesitations are being confirmed. I don't think the 701 Enduro will be the bike to replace my 650L.

    honest evaluation about your riding skills, but the 450L is not the answer to your problems. It's heavy and for basic trails ok, but stock it is going to handle worse than the 701. KTM EXCF would be a much better trail/road motorcycle. For the dirt trade off you will lose out huge on the road compared to the 701. Not even in the same category as a Honda CRF-450L.

    • @EPeltzer
      @EPeltzer Рік тому +2

      EXCF is not nearly as comfortable on the road. The 701 is so much better on the road. I see the 450L as that compromise. Not as good as the EXC off road (but still fantastic), but as comfortable on the road as the 710, maybe more so. Honda put a lot of effort into killing vibes, noise, etc. 500 EXC a vibey rattletrap. 450L not as powerful as the 701 but you honestly can't use more than about 50hp off road in most cases, unless you are desert racing as an expert. Also have read many accounts saying the 450L can honestly go longer in maintenance intervals if you are not stressing it in an off road racing environment. So I see the point of this video. The big 701/690 are probably the best most capable dual sports ever made. Yet they demand more from the rider. It's like having a supermodel girlfriend. Fantastic, the envy of all. But maybe kind of exhausting.

    So, summary:
    701 is too heavy and powerful for this particular rider on single track and more technical riding; and likely is for many others in similar riding conditions. Even a 450 can be hard work in such terrain, where a 250 is not, but, a 250 really lacks power when the terrain opens up. So, a 450/500 single is a sweet sport for average riders exploring tighter and more technical terrain but still wanting enough power to happily pull 70+mph on roads or open terrain. Fit, advanced riders can get whatever pleases them and can probably ride it damn near anywhere.

      I'm great beginner/ poor intermediate rider so single track on anything but the klx and exc was not very fun. My buddy who is a fair bit better had the same thoughts just enjoys the power more.

    • @EPeltzer
      @EPeltzer Рік тому

      Yes yes yes. So that 450/500 sweet spot. But the manufacturers are afraid to make a really great 450/600 ADV - the "unicorn" - because they are protecting their huge profits from the big two cylinder overweight ADV models that are so expensive. Huge money makers. Yet something like a 450L that is more similar to the CRF300 Rally would be such a terrific compromise bike that a lot of riders would realize that is better, and they would not sell the Africa Twins and 1250GS liter plus ADVs in the same numbers. Notice also how KTM is not selling a serious middle weight ADV, only a 350 and a 690! Same with BMW! And all the rest for that matter. A glaring hole in the lineup and this is exactly why. Monster huge ADV bikes are a huge business for them.
