I am from Brazil too, natively. I feel the same way but I left, permanently, about 8 years ago, and temporarily, multiple times, since 2007. Last time I flew there I stayed a couple of months as I was previously a bit "homesick". The trip was fine, I got the things I needed done, felt relieved when returning home (Netherlands), though. I just feel I belong here (NL) and not there. I never felt Brazil was my home even before leaving, that's only reinforced after actually doing it. I wish you figure out a way to move somewhere you feel well. 🙏🏻🎄🎁

Thank you so much for sharing this! I have never been to the Netherlands but I have met many people from there that I am fond of.
I am glad you could find your home somewhere else. I will be doing this soon and I am excited for the journey ahead.

As a person who has spent close to 20 years of my life abroad, I loved hearing you. It’s absolutely true that you need to live longer term a place to really understand it and how you fit or don’t fit there. Which is not to say that you can’t live there. But when you’re traveling and getting to know new places, you’re in a lot more of “discovery” mode. The people, the culture, the language, they are all vast new realms to be explored. After you have lived in a place for five or six years, you start noticing what kind of conversations people always have, the predictable reactions to things, the way people react (or are resigned) to things that may really bother you. But that’s OK, because ultimately I think you learn that beyond “finding the place where you fit in,” you get to know yourself better and realize how you can find your people wherever you are. you also realize that the more experience you have, the less you can just fit into any culture.
I lived in Turkey for 14 years and it’s like a second home to me. I also know that I will never really be part of that culture because I didn’t grow up in it, although I can function in it. at the same time, I can’t be an American who grew up comfortable in this culture and never looked at it from outside.
But that’s what has come to define most of the people I call my closest friends: they are all people who can’t really fit in, and they are just fine with that. :-) because we learned to find our people wherever we are.

Thanks for the post. I've been feeling very much like you for about thirty years. I love my country, it's beautiful. There are many interesting places and people but I never identified so strongly with the culture here that I want it in my life all the time. Unfortunately life circumstances, partners and family made it impossible for me to move and explore. I've been to several countries where I felt more comfortable but could not move to. Covid made it a financial nightmare and then it seems as if the whole world is going into turmoil and stress. However I'm not giving up and will visit those countries even if it's just for a week or three when I can. Sazji mentioned how one will never be truly a member of your adopted country. I agree, as he/she said, you associate with the people who are the same as you. I don't feel that connected in my birth country as it is. I just have the deep familiarity of it.

I completely understand this. I have travelled abroad for years, but am born and raised in the U.S. I am making a big move to Mexico this month.....I've wanted to do so even before our current political situation here. I have never felt "American" in my fiber....most of my closest friends are all from outside of the U.S. It's definitely a feeling. I like the way I am in Mexico...I feel free and myself. It's a great feeling but hard to explain to people who have not yet felt that.

Got yourself a new subscriber! Blessings on your journey! It’s funny I am planning to start my solo travel and my first destination will be Brazil in April! You’re absolutely correct, we won’t ever know what we need until we go out and experience life to see what it is that actually aligns with our soul! Curious what is the main factor that drive you towards SE Asia that differ from Brazil?

I felt in peace in SE Asia. There is something about it that it is even hard to reason. I loved the food, but heck, I love Brazilian food too haha. I just feel that the pace there is different, it's calmer, smooth.

Every persons journey is unique, I moved from northern Europe to Brazil for work at stayed there for three years, really enjoying the people, the food, fruits and climate before returning. And even if some things had changed it was very easy to get back in the familiar rhythm of my home country. Brazil is now my second home and every time I travel back to see friends and explore some more of this vast and diverse place it gives me a great feeling of homecoming.

In my opinion, what you experienced is a culture shock. I went to South Africa at the age of one, and I lived there for 28 years, so when I came to Brazil for good, I was freaking out. It took me 2 years to understand that the warmth and closeness Brazilians demonstrate isn`t a negative thing. They actually genuinely care for others, Although at the time I mistook it for "invasion of privacy or interference in my personal affairs" It's just the way they are raised, they just care more about others. I would go as far as to say Brazilians are less egotistical and less selfish. As you mentioned you were there for only 2 years in many different countries and the novelty of it all, the different perspectives foreigners have, and the different ways they see life is refreshing to see. However, there are 2 sides to every story. Lets say you do undergo this long, expensive process to become a citizen of a foreign Country. The novelty will wear off over time and there could be some drawbacks in that new culture that could impact your overall wellbeing negatively in the long run. The grass isn't always greener on the other side. Don't get me wrong, I love many aspects of the South African culture that I can't find here. That free thinking, care free happy go lucky individuality is amazing but it's difficult to find here in Brazil. I miss it a lot. However, Brazilians are down to earth real people family oriented without a superficial personality, wanting to impress others with a facade. Obviously there are good and bad aspects to every culture. I think the main question would be " If you don't have the life you love, learn to love the life you have! You are still young, so travel more, experience a variety of cultures, but don't commit to something permanent before looking at the long term implications. Better the devil you know, than the devil you don't know! Brasil is the Best country in the world !!! If you are happy with yourself, you will be happy anywhere you go. BTW the earth is flat. That is something you might want to look into my friend👍
