How to replace torsion bar mounts - Loud banging noise under truck - FIXED! - Silverado - Sierra

  • This 2003 GMC Sierra was making a loud banging and clunking noise underneath the vehicle. I need to replace the torsion bar mounts (Dorman 905-506). The torsion bar mount rusted completely in half, so the torsion bar crossmember was loose and banging against the frame. Talk about a loud banging noise when driving the vehicle. I show you how I replaced the torsion bar crossmember bushing mounts on this GM Truck. There's no need to mess with the torsion bar keys. I just used a floor jack to lift the crossmember up and down to get access to the bolts that were holding the mounts in place on the frame. Factory mounts are riveted in and need to be ground out with a grinder.

    I replaced a rear leaf spring shackle on this truck cuz it rusted in two. Now a rusted out torsion bar. What next? Wait...don’t answer that. I don’t want to know. 😂

      15 years and a couple hundred thousand miles later things do tend to break. Especially in states where road chemicals are thick every winter. At least it's not a Toyota; it still has a frame.

    Just had the same thing happen to my 2002 silverado my mount is non-existent on one side🤣thanks for this video when i get the new mounts my noise will be gone thanks to you! I did my front shocks today because they were really old and i thought it was the culprit but the noise was still there just dampened so i decided to crawl back under and try to find if anything else was loose and the one side was just floating with no mount in sight😂

    Highly recommend using an air hammer for factory rivets. Not nearly enough room to hammer out with a punch. Using a multi tool with a carbide blade is 10x faster and a cleaner cut than a grinder.

    • @jwill9877
      @jwill9877 3 роки тому +1

      @@TheBearGrylz yes I did. I bought 3 inch wide by 3/16 steel plate and rebuilt the entire frame in that area. The repair spans about 3 feet of the frame.
      I fix breaks in the frames of railcars so I felt comfortable in doing it. I basically replacated the same style of patch I would use on a railcar but built it piece by piece on the truck frame. I followed all the same rules I would for a railcar, which is far more stringent.

    Was looking through some old car manuals of my Dads “RIP POPS MISS YOU” anyway there was some writing referring to breaking rusty bolts loose. Goes like this mix acetone with brake fluid 50/50 in small spray bottle. Works on exhaust manifold bolts etc. I have been fighting a set of O2 sensors on my sons 2006 GMC SIEARRA 1500 4x4. Tried everything heat,CRC FREEZE IN A CAN. Nothing but skinned knuckles.spray it on that evening said you only need to wait bout 30mins but waited till morning sprayed all 1 more time when gathered 24”breaker bar BFH To be prepared put O2 socket on (I have the wrench)put my foot on frame and I shit you not single easy 1 handed pull and was loose all the rest same way. Later that day I had to go to the veteran’s graveyard Dads yurn is placed in a wall and ask him what he’ll POPS. HE was hard about things like IAM working on one of our race trucks and to point of swearing and throwing wrench’s just mine never His. He would just watch until I would go to him and ask for help he would walk over and finish what I could not in 3 to 5 mins that how I learned and pay close attention class was only open for that time if you had to ask more than once......well. He has been gone 10 yrs IAM 59 and I would give my arm for him to be a pain in my ass one more time. Didn’t mean to carry on thank you love your channel.

    Very helpful. Mine broke as well. 99 Silverado. But hey, the day it broke I heard loud banging like something was unwinding. This was while barely moving. What was that noise? It hasn’t made it since crosemember broke free from the frame mount. Was the torsion spring causing it to bang the frame? It was loud. Almost sounded like when a universal joint goes. But I checked those they are fine.

    You should be really careful when doing it this way. You should remove the tension on the torsion bars as there a lot of load on them, if it lets go I promise you, you will not have a good day.Just be safe is all I'm saying. I think mine are going as well and hope to do my own. Cheers!

      Montana Cohn are you talking lining up the main bolt hole to connect the crossmember to the mount? You may need to use a pry bar to manipulate the crossbar a bit. I needed to do that because the crossmember got a little caught on the new mount.

      You are best successful by taking a die grider and cutting a x pattern in the head of the rivet and then a air hammer chisel and blaming it off. It's literally a 20 min job with the right tools.
