Have to say I'm blessed that I live in same age that Nightwish is. I love their recent music especially. Floor knows how to bring tiers to everyone's cheeks... And if someone is playing tough in that audience, band makes sure you ball up and cry for Mami or Dadi on the floor(Not on top of her but actuall floor), hehe.

@@janihaavisto79 I agree. I've feel so fortunate to have seen them live a few times - hoping for many more to come. So true what you said - Nightwish will show you what's what! If you ain't crying, they're just gonna keep pulling at your heartstrings until you do! Greetings from a fellow Finn 😊

I had never been interested in Nigthwish, Id listened to them a couple of times and they never caught my attention, until the Queen arrived, Floor Jansen, and it was the perfect complement, Tarja and Anette are excellent singers but Floor with their versatility gives them the touch of perfection ...
An excellent technical band and a voice that comes from Valhalla himself!
Undoubtedly since 2012 I have been part of the Nigthwish Army, I saw them live in 2018 here in Buenos Aires and I wait for them again in 2022, it is a band that is worth every second of your life to see.

That is the power of Nightwish.
    - Tuomas writes a masterpiece, deep from the bottom of his heart.
    - Everyone in the band dedicates him, or herself completely to it and breathes real life into it.
    - Floor comes, rips your heart out, shatters it to pieces and you are thankful for it, because it all is so beautiful.
Floor gets me almost every time, with almost anything she sings. With Nightwish, this intensifies greatly, because Tuomas is a true genius and they all play, as if they are one, to make it perfect.

This song is sooo personal for Tuomas! When they fired Tarja back in 2005 they did it by means of a letter after the last concert of their End of an Era tour. It was an unanimous decision by the four guys (Juka was still with them). As they wanted the fans to know why they did it, they published the letter. And a storm of hate and angry comments broke lose. And Tuomas was targeted as the leader. He took the full brunt of those nasty emotions. He could not handle it, could not express his feelings towards the other guys because they were also struggling with their feelings. He went into a deep depression with the thought of suicide very real. He took refuge in his parents house and they nursed him back. And, luckily for him and for all of us, he killed himself in this song. The last part Floor is singing (sitting) are the words his mother said to him. During this performance Tuomas asked the technical crew to shut off Floor's voice in his in-ears as it was very emotional for him. The harsh music is the ventilation of his feelings and Marko also vents his feelings through his voice. At the end of the song you see Emppu and Marko standing beside Tuomas, supporting him. This song gets to me every time, so I saw you in a blurr and I am not embarrased! Thank you for this Chief!

Tears are normal from "grown ass men" listening to Floor and Nightwish. Just let them flow and get the full effect of the masterpieces Tuomas composes. You've noticed how the songs have just what they need and don't go over the top. And then there's the little fills and sounds in the background again you noticed them. You probably didnt know that when the whispery voice says " Now I only have 3 minutes and counting" @ (10:07) When Tuomas does the slice across his neck its been 3 minutes, Go check it out. Now that's how its done!! Thanks for the reactions they have been great.

    Hello Chief 322.
The song "The Poet and the Pendulum" is a 13 Minute journey through the mind and turmoil of Tuomas Holopainen after the year 2005. It was in that year the band parted with their long-time singer Tarja Turunen and had a personal falling out with her. The pain of the separation was big on both sides, and shown in this song. There is guilt for what happened, there is the responsibility that the band and Holopainen had to show towards the fans,. It was the End of an Era for them, and reason for Holopainen being lost as described in these lyrics. We can only of course to a certain degree suppose how much of these are truly Holopainen's feelings, wishes and pains - but we do know that the lyrics of Nightwish have been up to then very personal. Other songs on the album also digest this separation and falling out of the members with Turunen.
However personal and "real" these thoughts are, I feel like this song definitely takes us not only on a journey with Holopainen but also into ourselves. The music underlines the emotional gravity of the song extremely well. And I believe a lot of people can actually relate to a sense of guilt and being overwhelmed that all they desired for is the safety of home and innocence. While being personal, the song can still ring true to it's listener. That's a quality Nighwish possesses in many, many more songs. The emotional journey is one we can all share and very few bands know how to put that journey into song and especially into sound as well as Nightwish does.
The band remains through all it's shores and Oceans, one of my main favourites and I hold special place for the band in my musical heart. I hope you have enjoyed reading my analysis and share some of my thoughts. If you do have any comments, please feel free to let me know. And remember the beauty of interpretation is that it is subjective; we can see all and feel different things in the same song and continue to love it endlessly.

I am 64 years old and have been a heavy metal/hard rock enthusiast since I was a very young boy of 8 years old! I have listened to the greats for over 56 years now...and Nightwish is in a class all by themselves! If they would have gotten any air play at all in the USA...I would have been a huge fan for years!!!
This song can bring tears to the eyes of almost anyone....it's brilliant song...a masterpiece!
I hope you will listen and react to "Dead Boy's Poem" live in Buenos Aries, 2018...and make sure you have the lyrics pulled up! Also recommend "Endless Forms Most Beautiful" the Official Lyrics Video!!! It's an awesome song...and a little more on the heavy metal side!! This is a masterpiece of a composition, taking the listener through a deep a fatal depression. The chaos of thoughts, the upd and downs, the mind driving you to the limits of emotions - all recognized in the music and the lyrics. And Marko's voice crying in despair...
And Floor! - no one else can transfer emotions like her - her ability to color any sound are..... Well, Floor is Floor - and she is unique.
Both Tuomas and Floor were happy how they managed to catch the emotions behind the lyrics, and deliver them the way Nightwish did. When Tarja announced she would leave Nightwish because her ambitions were higher, the others got chocked. They were childhood friends and they couldn't recognize "the new Tarja" after her husband's influenced her - and it is these thoughts you can find. Of course they had to fire her - but it was done and dealt with, in a immature way. The fans and lots of "important" people flagged their opinions, without realizing the background - and that hit the band and especially Tuomas really hard. And that he managed to describe in this song, so brilliantly, than most people can feel the pain in his mind - and Floor's capabilities enhaces this to perfection.
    Excellent reaction from you 👍 🤘 🤘

The Poet and the Pendulum was written after firing Tarja the original singer. She was the face of Nightwish at the time, dear in all the fans hearts, and Tuomas the Poet/composer/songwriter/ founder/ and keyboardist for Nightwish considered her a muse to many of the songs he had written at that point. They had also grown up in the same city and knew each other since early childhood. All the band members decided together to fire her for acting too much of a diva. According to all the band members, Tarja was missing lots of rehearals and would not even travel with the band anymore. Tuomas was painted as the devil by many fans, and went through a deep dark depression. He even considered ending the band and committing suicide. He wrote The Poet and the Pendulum at that time, and actually kills himself in the song. He said he killed himself in the song, as to not do it in real life. To this day every time he plays it, it takes him back to those feelings, and shows on his face. In the last part, Mother and Father, words are sung to him that his real mother said to him at that time of his deep depression. One part that touches me at the end when the guitarist Emppu and bassist Marko, the only other two involved with firing Tarja (that were still active with the band)were standing with Tuomas at the end in solidarity and love.

This is such a harrowing song and anyone who has been in such a dark place as Tuomas feels this ride intimately and personally.
The closing act when mother (and father in harmony in the background) save their son before his pain and despair destroys him is the prettiest and most beautiful thing I've heard in a long time. So moving, so elegant.
This song is a true masterwork.

Great reaction. You could write a thesis on this piece. For me it is the greatest of Tuomas works, greater even than TGSOE.
You noticed lots of those falling chords in the backing that reactors never comment on but that really add so much for me.
So much to be said, but notice that Emppu checks on Tuomas in places Marko and Emppu both go over at the end and Floor, when she finishes singing, delays her usual Thank You to look across and check on Tuomas for a few seconds.
Tuomas eventually had his in-ear vocals feed turned off during this song as he found it so tough.
Having heard this, I recommend you to listen to the demo version. In it, Marko does all the vocals, there are places where the lyrics are harsher and all the emotion in Marko as well as Tuomas, over the circumstances of the split with Tarja is laid bare.
I find this piece breathtaking every time despite having watched it some dozens of times.
It's a shame I will never see it in a live concert, as Tuomas has said they won't perform it again - they are not those people any more; they've got over that anger.
Wonderful, wonderful piece. Floor performing Sparkle, originally the choir is magical and when she gets to the Mother and Father section I wonder how many people can get through it without a tear? As a grown man of 64, I know I can't.
And those last three long scooping notes! Sheer magic from Tuomas and Floor.
The other thing that is showcased is Marko's ability to scream out a rage of lyrics while his bass is doing something totally different at an incredible speed up and down that fretboard.

    @00:30 It IS great!
@06:10 Epic composition that carries the instruments into a grand performance which commands your attention, and ignites your passion! ... and the line "the shoulder cries more" really highlights the desperation of wanting to vent, but not being able to due to the circumstances around you - which reflects perfectly in the composition during the second quarter of this masterpiece..! 🙌
    @12:00 Pendulous.. Pendulum, yes.
@16:50 Same, but it starts during the first minute and doesn't stop until I switch to Slipknot save myself from myself! 🤣
@20:30 'The Poet and the Pendulum' & 'The Phantom of the Opera' are two pieces by Nightwish that blows me away! They are fantastic!

Cyprus chapter of the Nightwish Army reporting in.......................I presume General Gabriel of the Army has paid you a visit!
This is one reason Tuomas is know as the "Metal Mozart" and for good reason. There's no shame in a "grown ass man" showing emotion, this is one song that just rips your heart out.
This is why the Army says to newer reactors, wait and read the lyrics before you listen to this. It is not being a bunch of nannies, it's so you experience what the song is really about. There are three songs from this band I cannot get through without crying, this one, Dead Boys Poem and The Greatest Show on Earth. If you want sheer ethereal beauty, I can recommend "Shoemaker", make that 4 songs I cannot get through without tears!
Glad to subscribe and support your content :)

Great reaction. You got in it without knowing the back story and you still got emotional, this shows that you felt it. Now.. Listen to it again, knowing that this is about Tuomas "suicide" (he told that he did it in this song so he can go on in real life), after the band fired Tarja and almost everyone blamed him, so he got a nasty depression. The last part is his parents talking to him in real life. Now.. Look at some details.. Like the 3 minute mark (when the lyrics said "3 minutes and counting" and after 3 minutes he does the gesture of beheading), or when the bands live h alone and the, the old members come together. This is a masterpiece, and for me it's impossible to listen to the last part and not got tears in my eyes. Great one. Stay safe 🤘😁🤘

Don't sweat it brother. I'm a grown ass man too, and the Mother Father act of this song always makes me well up a bit too.
What makes it extra beautiful is how personal this song is to Tuomas and how Marko and Empuu [the only members of the band from the era it was written] both check on him during the performance, ending the song next to him.
