  • Most people assume that Bionic Commando on the Game Boy is just a straight forward (and inferior) port of the NES classic title from Capcom. However, they couldn't be more wrong. Despite never really being able to appreciate Bionic Commando due to its difficult platforming mechanics, Bionic Commando was a real surprise of a game. Find out how this sci-fi take on the franchise is truly an underrated title in the franchise.

Proud to say I didn't just play this as a kid, but I beat it too! Never even owned it, instead borrowing it from a friend and playing it from start to finish! Good game and, yes, GREAT music!

That's impressive! I don't know if I would've been able to beat this one as a kid.

Interestingly, I lent it to a friend who beat the game who beat the game and then gave it back to me. He beat it before I did, though I did beat it later once I learnt you could hold down left/right direction to release at the apex of a swing.

BC on the NES is my favorite game on the console so it was really interesting to hear someone who wasn’t a big fan get a lot of enjoyment out of this title. Elite Forces is a lot of fun too.
The funny thing about your Mega Man X comparison is that I believe this game launched roughly a year before so it’s possible that MMX took a lot of inspiration from this game. Tokuro Fujiwara created BC and then over saw the entire MM series so there’s definitely some shared involvement. Really cool to think about!
Great review man, glad you enjoyed the game and thanks for making this video!

Leg Armor actually used to damage enemies when you land on them or hit them with the leg during swinging

I will say, there's a section on the final stage where you swing with the grapple along a "staircase" of ceiling pipes that feels cathartic to swing through successfully with the Area 0 BGM playing, as if it's a milestone to show that you've mastered the platforming.
Then you fall down the bottomless pit.

Another excellent review of a franchise I love. The original BC was one of my first few NES games I got as a kid. And I loved the grappling wire mechanic, very unique (but a huge difficulty curve). Once you master that the game(s) get a lot more fun. Also, totally agree about the music. Both games are ricking and are ingrained into my brain! Good stuff Mike!

A lot of people have mentioned that they loved the first BC on NES so it's been cool to see people's reaction to this one. It's kinda dumb that it's become so expensive because I always figured it was such a known IP that it wouldn't get rare but....apparently it is.

Did not know this even existed before this review, but it looks like an interesting experiment on Capcom's behalf. Going by the footage presented here I think I'd like it less than the NES Bionic Commando due to the increased focus on platforming combined with a variety of design choices that makes it seem like that platforming would be an absolute PAIN like the seeming inability to lower yourself and start swinging again if you've already raised yourself up to the ceiling (I suppose you could drop down and then shoot up but it looks like you can only swing ahead if you do a forward jump, not a drop-down?) and that segment where you couldn't swing into the door because you kept bouncing off against the floor the door was placed on... and stuff like enemies floating around and being able to fly through floors, ending up in a position where you couldn't even hit them while kneeling, but THEY can just fly straight ahead through the ceiling and you couldn't even dodge them due to not being able to jump or not having a ceiling to grapple up towards.
All in all, it just seems like their experiment with the formula resulted in a game with a lot of very irritating design oversights that makes it WAY more frustrating than I'd be comfortable with, with a lot of deaths that stem not from my own lack of skill but a cruel RNG and level design that eats lives and isn't really challenging so much as it is frustrating... but you did you say you found the game better to play than the NES game, and that can't just ALL be down to the graphical design, so maybe it's just way less frustrating and unfair to PLAY than the footage makes it LOOK?

    • @Dongled
      @Dongled  Рік тому +1

Ha! Now you see the dilemma I was faced with when reviewing this one. I'm glad you pointed out how difficult it looked like it was, because in 12, 16 and 17 specifically, it was exhausting to run through those levels. I felt like I had (surprisingly) more control once I got the hang of it than the BC game on the NES, which always felt slower and less smooth than this GB game. But I agree that the level design for those levels mentioned requires intense precision and fiddling around with certain exits. I would imagine there's a way to get into Level 12's doorway without having to trick the system by glitching through the floor, but my skills were just not there to find out. I think I may have successfully done it once.
I'm not sure if you can lower yourself and start swinging again once stopped. I will say I don't think I tried holding the A button down once stopped so maybe that's how to do it? I would just drop myself down and then quickly hold right and shoot the grapple again.

@@Dongled That actually reminds me- I think you could stun enemies if you hooked them instead of shot them- opening them up for more attacks so that someone popping up behind a barrel could be handled in one go rather than just waiting for them to go back up again- did the grappling hook do anything like that here? And could you grab bullets / items with the hook in this game as well?

While this does look nice, I feel if you're going to make movement solely based on grapple swinging, you've got to try and refine it a bit more. Not, ya know, being able to clip through walls. Also the final boss being Wiseman makes me think of Sailor Moon lol

I also played and reviewed this one recently. Honestly, it let me down. The NES version was always one of my favorites, but I couldn't get into the redesigned levels here. They felt bigger for the sake of it and lost the tight, focused elegance of the originals. Plus, no exploding Hitler.

    • @willmistretta
