20 years after a pandemic has radically changed known civilization, infected humans run wild and survivors are killing each other for food, weapons; whatever they can get their hands on. Joel, a violent survivor, is hired to smuggle a 14-year-old girl, Ellie, out of an oppressive military quarantine zone, but what starts as a small job soon transforms into a brutal journey across the U.S.
"I'm old, I'm satisfied, and you were my purpose"
That may be the kindest thing you can possibly say to someone
This was so beautiful.
Despite what all the other characters and possible people that had to deal with the apocalypse/end of the world, Bill and Frank definitely had the most peaceful in comparison, lived somewhat long, had food and wine and each other, that's as good as you can get in a zombie apocalypse IMO
This was one of the most beautiful stories of all time.
Many people cried and i think this scene gave some people a different view on love between men.
@@snowti3294 Yep. When you spin a perverted relationship as a work of fiction, you can spew out all sorts of fantasy endings.
@@bugwar5545 i hope one day you can come to terms with what an awful person you are
Watching people grow old together in the midst of a terrifying and tragic Apocalypse is probably one of the most beautiful things that I have ever seen.
❤❤ you have a good heart.
Interesting that you find such perversion as 'beautiful'.
Bill waits till frank actually drinks the wine.. because i think he wasn't sure if frank would.. but soon as he does he instantly drinks his.. and that's what gave it away to frank that it was in the bottle the entire time.
Yes. It's such a great scene, a perfect ending for them.
I think it’s also the fact that he downs it like medicine, instead of enjoying it like wine.
Want to add another layer to it? I think he spiked Frank's drink after the spiked wine specifically to ensure Frank passes first.
As Frank said; 'It is objectively romantic.' Even in the face of death he still observes the wishes and wills of his partner.
“Were there pills already in the bottle?” “Enough to kill a horse” Bill is such a badass. He went out on his own terms, I’m glad they expanded on these characters. The game only gave them a little time but this was way better.
@@Darius-_No, this Bill is exactly the same Bill from the game, but making different choices. Game Bill became paranoid about survival, whispering to himself in the corners, as we noticed while playing, and that's why he is abandoned by Frank, who can't bear to spend another day with him. But what if he had chosen to prioritize Frank in his life? This is what is told in this BEAUTIFUL and spectacularly well-made episode that stands out in many aspects in relation to the game. The life that Bill in the series lived is the life that Bill in the game always dreamed of living.
@@Darius-_ shit you're right tbh. hbo bill still way better.
@@Darius-_if you watch the podcasts about the episodes, Neil Druckman himself said that this was his chance to write the story he wanted to in the game but felt like his hands were tied. So this was planned, but for several reasons, it didn’t make it into the game.
I love the show, because people get hung up that they’re gay and not the question, “oh so you were ready for suicide?” Which is like…he wanted to kill himself! You literally saved his life and..ugh
@@efgraginWell to be fair, we know the option of taking his own exit isn’t something completely out of character for Frank, given what he did in TLOU the game.
I think the character who was changed the most by the show is definitely Bill, but honestly it’s a change I can see being realistic with the same starting point, he’s two iterations of the same character, but with each iteration making different choices leading them to different endpoints. Kind of like Multiple Universes Theory, but a lot less cosmic and a lot more gay romance.
These 2 truly beat this shitty world in the best way possible. They created a beautiful safe haven, ate amazing food and wine, grew old and died together happy. And on their own terms. You couldn't hope for a better life in these circumstances
Couldnt ask for a better way to go.
You couldn't hope for a better life in any circumstances
Hell lots of people don’t even get this kind of ending In the real world
“I’m satisfied” just made me tear up, ion know why.
Because for most people, when their time comes, a tragically small amount can say that and truly mean it. 😢
Most people still have many things they wanted to do when their times come. Regrets to make right, people or places to visit, even just having a last glass of wine with a loved one. Most don't get to do these things, but these two, in their own way, were able to live AND end their lives on their own terms. Doing that in reality, in our world, is difficult. Doing that in the world they're in? They may be the only ones ever able to again.
I loved how they changed their characters from the game. They're still the same people at heart, but this ending was beautiful and dignified in a way that honors their characters in a way the game didn't.
Today is the 29th of August, 2023. The Day this scene takes place. Rest in Peace Bill and Frank. ❤
I honored their extraordinary life together by having some sweet ripe strawberries...
This doesn’t take place in 2033 like in the game?
@@FezCaliph This takes place before the plot with Ellie and Joel. :)
@@Erik_Ahl thank you!
@@FezCaliph The timing of the show is 10 years earlier than the game.
Personally, I prefer the relationship between Bill and Frank in the show as compared to the game. So beautifully portrayed. Had me in tears.
Fr. The games version was bleak. Fitting for the world building but i prefer contrasting the show with a nice side story
@@nojustno3007Both versions have their strong suits, both their valid points.
Frank hated him in the game 😭 this is an upgrade
Both portrayals were nice in their own way. Bill was a cautionary tale for Joel in the game. A peek into the type of life someone who cuts everyone off to survive but never really getting a chance to live as a result. Wheras Bill and Frank in the show are a reminder that even in a dark and sad world, love still exists and as long as we hold onto it hope is never truly gone. In the darkest of times, the love we have for others is what gives us the strength to continue living in a harsh world. Both stories are a story about the importance of opening ourselves up to the vulnerability of love.
I definitely preferred this storyline over the games.
So glad Offerman got an Emmy for this. He went from badass survivalist to compassionate lover within this episode. It was beautiful television!
These guys went through the apocalypse, found each other, lived MANY years together in relative safety despite the Cordyceps outbreak... and they died to their own accords.
We should all wish to be this lucky. Beautiful episode.
Loving someone this much and being able to spend this many years together, in a world of pain and darkness, is something not many people get to experience.
"I do not support this. I should be furious, But from an objective point of view, it's incredibly romantic."
Me and my boyfriend have a running joke after watching their episode that I'm Frank in the relationship and he's Bill.
@@umartinez883 Well, that's extremely romantic too haha
This is literally the best scenario to experience in a hopeless zombie apocalypse imo
It may sound dumb for people to say that these stories are unnecessary for the show but to be honest it’s not. Seeing the perspectives of other people’s lives in a world like this is perfect. Not only to build story but to show us what happens before, now, and after.
I love stories where the perspective is mostly focused on one character but it branches off in mini tangents like this. I think it’s perfect storytelling for world building
nobody is saying that, or if they are they are in the minority
It shows that even in our darkest times and when the world has fallen apart, there is still the human capacity for love.
@@skynotaname2229 its unfortunate that the Minority are often the ones that scream the loudest to make them sound like they are the majority
its fake, didnt happen
I just don’t understand why people could be so upset about this. This is what love is, and it’s so beautiful.
People are upset because homosexuality is an abomination, like eating shrimp, wearing clothes made of two different materials, and playing football (dead pig's skin)...
Water is water, drink out of a toilet
degens
Because of the disgusting degeneracy of two middle aged bearded guyss kissing? Because they wasted a whole episode on images that nobody person wants to watch? Want to watch gay porn, go to adult websites. I came for a damn zombie series.
Conservatives are terrible people, that's why.
I was so confused seeing bill and frank older because i thought they would go the original route from the game but I was thankfully mistaken. This episode was some of the greatest storytelling I’ve ever seen and I was feeling so many contradicting emotions by the end
the one thing that alluded me was how Frank knew the wine was already poisoned once he saw Bill drink in a similar fashion. Did not pick that up watching it on the television when the season was running.
@@alexbeardsley751 I think it's two things. One is that Bill was heartbroken when Frank decides it's his last day but Bill isn't particularly emotional when "adding the poison" to Frank's wine (because he had already added it to both). Two is that Bill just downs his wine immediately and only after Frank drinks his - Bill is someone shown to enjoy the finer things and would normally savor his wine if he didn't want to make sure he died at the same time as Frank.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@douglasfrancis1254 you can hate all you want doesn’t change how it went down lol
@@JohnTerrell-s4d Even moreso! Bill spikes Franks drink beyond the already spiked wine. Bill gave Frank his last wish. To pass in the arms of Bill. And Bill through his lesser dose allowed such events to transpire. Bill guaranteed Frank's last wish.
The writer of this episode saw his opportunity to tell a story he’s had in the bag for years, and he absolutely nailed it. This made the rest of the series, the game and most tv shows look utterly soulless. This episode is a masterpiece of storytelling.
I would disagree that the rest is "soulless", but I would agree that this episode, though a huge deviation from the game, was amazing and heartwarming.
Ummm, why would the game be soulless? IT'S LITERALLY ONE OF THE MOST EMOTIONAL GAMES OF ALL TIME. This episode can be soulful. The game can also be soulful and is. Two can exist.
Gotta love it when someone likes something so much, that they’ll call other media something its not. This doesn’t make the game or any other TV Show “Soulless”. You liked the episode, thats great. I did too. Don’t start being dumb.
@@vikramvenkatesh6728 More than one opinion can exist also!
@@TheReelHeel There is no need to be upset or rude.
I absolutely loved the change of pace and style for this episode. The first few minutes I was like "Huh?" but once you get into it it's sublime. This whole episode brought tears to my eyes and I love how Offerman and Bartlett weren't "afraid" so to speak, to portray a gay couple this way. They both did such an amazing job. The love between these two characters felt so real.
My only regret from this episode is that I liked Bill and Frank so much that I wish I could’ve seen them interact with Ellie. Just imagine how hilarious the dialogue between Ellie and Frank would have been.
Frank would’ve definitely been like a doting uncle offering to take her to the boutique and bill would’ve sat her down until he was certain she could handle every weapon in his arsenal
Oh, hands down, Frank would've loved Ellie and I bet she and Bill would've had similar interactions like the game... maybe a bit toned down.
Being that their story was so short in the game and kind of distant, this was a nice touch to expound on their lives together
Agreed! I found it brilliant
It also ends way better in this, in the game Bill is just an ass you put up with to get a car and frank is nothing but a corpse you find at the end of that portion of the game.
it expanded nothing, this is not canon, Bill was an asshole.
@@cgigammez5749Frank also tried to leave him because he was such an asshole but got trapped in a house and ended up hanging himself.
i dont understand why they couldnt do all the lovey dovey shit and then end it with bill going more schizo for whatever reason and ending it the canon way

This grown man don't shed a tear very often...
Usually dedicating a whole episode to a bubble plotline that has little to no bearing on the main plot is a bad idea but this episode went so hard
As gripping as this episode is, imagining this scenario with my own loved one makes it hit so much harder. What a beautifully done scene. A great reminder to cherish those beautiful moments.
I am a 100% straight man. This episode was quite possibly the best love story I've ever seen on tv. They found eachother in the midst of the worlds collapse. They lived together, loved together, and grew old together. They even chose their way out together. Thats 100% real and true love
Yes! You're a 100% evolved human being.
I'm rewatching this after that Emmy win and crying all over again
Same, I just came back her too
Frank probably noticed immediately that the bottle of wine was open before Bill sat down.
I openly wept pretty much this whole episode. Both tears of joy and profound sadness. Nick Offerman deserved his Emmy, he really show-cased his ability to give an emotionally moving performance with this one.
Living a relatively peaceful life together despite the apocalypse, managing to grow old and eventually going out together on your own terms is about as romantic as it gets.
Bill and Frank storyline was my favorite part of that season. Very heartwarming.
I told my friend that I loved these scenes to death and he was super weirded out about that. We haven’t talked regularly and normally since then. No seriously, a long time friend I have had is pretty much ghosting me ever since I said I enjoyed this storyline immensely. We used to talk about the games all the time. We also used to play Last of Us online regularly when it first came out.
Really sad.
Sorry to hear that my friend. It's a shame that they couldn't see the beauty and raw emotion in this episode. You did nothing wrong by expressing your feelings about it
@@TheChrisForum thank you for the kind words. The friend I speak about lives in the Bible thumbing Deep South so obviously he isn’t as comfortable with gay things as I. I’m not gay at all but I grew up in a liberal suburb of Boston so queerness is completely normal to me.
The coldness from him is a result of the culture he grew up in. With that being said he knows I’m not gay but the fact I enjoyed a scenes with two gay men makes him question that.
I guess we weren’t actually good of friends I suppose
@@t-mac1236 I understand the differences that religion can sometimes pose to a relationship. Be that familial or friend. Been there myself. Sad part is the best thing for you is probably letting your old friend go their own way. I know you probably have a want to make them see things from your point of view. I know that feeling as well. Sadly, it's likely not going to happen. I deal with it by just hoping they have a happy life whenever I think of them, but otherwise just try and live my best life. I hope the same for you
That is sad. You never really know people.

This is best for you then. He doesn’t seem too stable.

This is what love looks like, gender or sexuality is not a factor.
1 person caring for another, no shame, no second thoughts, just love.
We should all wish to find another person to make us this whole, no matter your orientation
"...another person to make us this whole, no matter your orientation..."
You should really share that with your 'minor attracted' buddies.
They would really appreciate you validating their perversions.
@@bugwar5545 It's not the same though :) minors can't consent

The whole episode is about their romance .....it's so lovely
I've never been an incredibly empathetic man to the plight to anyone who isn't heteronormative. Never truly grew up with anyone like that. This episode gave me some humanity. And if I may say, what a beautiful story. Gave me a broader perspective of life and what it means to be human. God bless the writers
I did cry watching this but it wasn't because I was sad. Life goes by so fast when you're happy and enjoying it. I would love the life these 2 shared even normally and not during the fall of society.
Frank and Bill relationship is better than Twilight

i mean ,look that's the real LOVE
Jesus fucking Christ this episode had me in tears the entire time… I love this couple and I swear, aside from the dangers, I’m envious they got to live that sort of life. Wish I got to see more of them but I’d probably sob again- also it’s official, they’re definitely my two favorite characters- so far. I’m only on episode 3 as of writing this. Had to stop watching bc of work lol
Glad empathy outweighs otherwise hate filled comments on this. When youre empty, hate easily fills the void
This episode exemplifies the statement that Love is Love , whether it’s between a man & a woman, 2 men or 2 women. Falling asleep in your beloved’s arms. Wonderfully storytelling, fantastic writing & directing and brilliant performances by very talented actors

Honestly, the best any of us can hope for is to die satisfied after finding our purpose
The whole Bill and Frank episode I find incredibly emotional, and most obviously the ending. I can’t watch it without tears streaming down my face. Brilliant acting and deserves the awards received.
Nick Offerman won his first-ever Emmy for his performance in "The Last of Us"
Remember in the game how Frank died off screen after they had a falling out? Frank died being mad at Bill and there was no sense of closure, Bill was left with his grief and pain. Seems a lot more realistic than having this idyllic everyone gets a happy ending tied up neatly in a bow bull crap.
So fucking glad they fleshed their relationship out in the show
I can only whisper a hope for a love like this
I never played the video game and to be honest I expected a bit of a shoot'em up series, but good Gawd it sure does NOT disappoint !
The quality of the writing ! The depth of the acting !
I was surprised just how much I loved Bill and Frank's story arc.
They were one of the best parts of this show! Loved all their scenes and their ending was beautiful. And the note he left for Joel was beautiful as well.
I really had no damn to give for either of these characters in the video game, but watching this scene made me ugly cry
As a straight guy this scene had me in tears.. So much love between them both..
The look on franks face when he put down the glass and watched bill drink his wine made me cry...
In a world full of turmoil and terror, this seems like a perfect way to go. I'd much rather die relaxed and peaceful versus getting ripped apart by the infected or shot up by raiders.

I genuinely don’t think any film or tv had made me cry like this episode did when it came out, and I don’t think anything has since
The ability to age people on screen has gotten crazy good, and I don't even mean with CGI (which I don't think is being used here, but I could be wrong).

Not hard to figure out. The whole show was a play by play of the cut scenes in the game except this one. Good old kneel Cuckmann in virtue signaling because he's woke and had to let the world know how virtuous and open minded he is. Then all the band wagon jumpers did the same.

I really thought when he first showed up out of the tunnel and finally got inside his house, he was going to kill him. I even thought he would pretend to be a homosexual just to kill and take over the house. I've never been so wrong for this kind of TV show. We've seen betrayal time and time again (Walking Dead, Lost, etc.) This almost felt like a whole separate movie by itself. The scenes, conversations, and acting were powerful and breathtaking. I am a straight man and this hit me differently. The only other movie that I can think of that had such raw emotion that involves homosexuality and disease was PHILADELPHIA (Hanks - Washington). This was amazing to watch but so sad.

Diving into these comments is a quick reminder on how toxic The Last of Us fandom is. The writers strike delayed season 2 but damn I am not eager to see the reactions to what assuredly will be an amazing unique retelling and expansion to the second games story. So many crap excuses for homophobia coming from "the true fans of the game" they know better than the director of the game and tv show, they know better on how stories and screenwriting are supposed to be done, and they know gays are yucky and stories with boys kissing are gross. Did not expect this episode in the series, but I'm so glad they chose this direction. Such a beautiful story of two people who found each other in the most dire of circumstances, and their love carried them through the years until it was over.
