- You are visiting Ireland. You are visiting one of the finest monastic settlements in Europe. Situated beside the picturesque River Shannon it is a location of beauty and serenity. Then you meet John. John is the type of tour guide that brings ancient stones to life so that they no longer resemble a half finished building site. The guide you wish you could just pop in your pocket for your onward journey. Then later as you make your onward journey, around a bend you see an old ruined castle you could just reach into your pocket, take him out and say “well John whats the story here then”…
In this video John is explaining the coming of the Normans to Ireland in 1169. The connection to Clonmacnoise is that a woman by the name of Derbforgaill who played a part in that story retired to Clonmacnoise in 1186 where she died in 1193.

He didn't realise the disaster that would befall the Gael. A tragedy.
He did not care only about money and power.
He's a traitor
I am related to Dermot Macmurrough
Explain!
So am I, traced family back to Ireland. What’s your surname?
Same! He’s my Great x30 grandfather
Oh keep quiet about that or actually tell Sinn Fein to ask them can I join.
@kathmac11659 you better keep that knowledge to yourself
Dermot Mac Murchada invited the English into Ireland in 1169
Did he not invide the Normans ...not the English ?
My mother's maiden name is Cavanaugh. Not sure how much the name branched off. For example, not everyone with the name Smith or Jones are related to those of the same name. I was curious as to how the Cavanaughs are all related if at all.
