Stocking the mental tackle box with with great info. Thanks
I've had a lot of fish get off using EWG hooks until I learned a few things, so I'm gonna share with you guys to help you put more fish in the boat based on my personal experience.
EWG hooks are best for baits that run horizontal like a fluke or a toad. The reason why they work better for these type baits instead of flipping or pitching is all about the angle. When the fish bites a fluke with an ewg the hook point is always straight up so it always hooks them in the hard top part of the mouth. When it's on a texas rig the hook point can be facing in any direction and if that fish gets hooked in the bottom of the lip it makes it easier to rip out or throw. For pitching creature baits a straight shank hook give a much better hook up and land ratio. On regular worms and straight tale worms a regular off set hook is hard to beat. Another thing on beaver style baits I never use bigger than a 4/0 straight shank. People use 5/0 on them all the time, but the 3/0 is perfect most of the time, less hook to get caught in the grass, less for the fish to feel when it bites down on it and it doesn't take away from the action of the bait. Give these tips a try and see what a difference it makes. Maybe you won't have to tell your wife about the big one you had that got off lol
Thank you! My list is getting long.
