Whenever you pause to breakdown or react to a specific line, you should rewind 10 seconds before you resume, so you can catch more. If you want of course 😂
I also watched your reaction to bar breaker. Prof is a beast. That beat was produced by Aes. It was on an album called the blob. It was a bunch of beats he produced and he couldn’t figure out any lyrics for them.
@@Keeferfer favorite track from his is Daylight that belongs to one of my favorite album of his Labor days that still gets played like its brand new but in my adult life Skelthon a vibe. Also fun fact and side note listen to Lice which is Aesop rock & homeboy sandman which albums can only be found on bandcamp
Production on the whole album is out of this world. Aesop is a beast on the lyrics and flow like always, but the production here is his best work to date, and mostly self produced.
Aes refers to himself as a ghost often. This song is written in his perspective of his daily challenges and using ghost metaphors to paint the picture. “Old Manhattan ectoplasm everywhere” Probably means the man has been through there so many times theres evidence of him everywhere The three pressing questions “Where were you the night of? What are you traversing earth in spite of? How are you adjusting to the triumph?” My guess is these are made by his therapist as Aes has a history of depression and anxiety and has been making progress on those issues including quitting certain drugs “My wig picker through me out of her office, had to cold turkey benzos summer was awesome” From his song Tuff. Idk just some theories i’m throwing out there. Hes just a creative guy with a large vocabulary dealing with personal shit and using rap to vent his frustration
This album's full of voyages, some real, some mental, some both. Around the world (Peru, Cambodia, Thailand), outer space (in a cardboard box rocket ship), on a skateboard, out of his headspace (on psychedelics, occultism and/or demonic possession). For me, it's like he feels like a demon (anti-social) who'd rather be alone in his own world (creativity), but gets summoned back into a body (the physical world), which then scares off those who wanted the body to come back to life (friends and family). So to me one layer is the perspective of a spirit saying "let me in", but on another level telling himself to keep trying to make real-world connections, even if it "lights up his limbic system". He's a complicated guy. All the vids from this album are great, but I always suggest "Get out of the Car/Shrunk/Kirby" from his previous album. It's a story of breaking out of a mental paralysis from the loss of his best friend, trying therapy with mixed results, then finding a little real happiness. "Blood Sandwich" is a straightforward story song, that ties into "reconnecting", and is part of the overall "therapy' theme of Impossible Kid, but the "Get out of the Car/Shrunk/Kirby" combo fit together so perfectly I hate seeing someone only do one without the others. Every one of his videos is ridiculously creative.
That's an amazing interpretation @J U! He's definitely upper echelon when it comes to his approach to the art of hip-hop. I'm adding all your recommendations to the queue! We'll have some Aesop once a week for spooky season!
one of if not my favorite tracks from Aesop. this one talks about graffiti tagging / culture. “He all-city by the time your eyes adjusted to the darkness In parts uncharted, always find the corners cozy You can send your fastest riders, I return the horses lonely Controller, the locals only note the lucky charms and army jacket When your addy's in the heart of thar be dragons, I know” is him talking about tagging graffiti in remote/hard to reach places which is a sign of accomplishment when tagging. “when your add’ys in the hear or thar be dragons” location is off the normally traveled map” they used to think monsters existed in the unexplored places. “ he’s all city by the time you adjusted to the darkness.” saying by the time you’re looking for him, he’s gone and could be anywhere in the city. “The locals only know the lucky charms and army jacket” is just him, saying no one knows what he looks like other than by the jacket, he wears and usually leaves behind brand cigarette / butts. The fastest riders and lonely horses are police officers that are sent after him, but they never catch him. I love the fact that this song morphs and changes, depending on what lens you look at it through.
You have to check out the songs by Aesop Rock: Daylight/Nightlight Dorks Lazy Eye Kirby The Gates And all the other ones everyone else has suggested Always have the lyrics up!!!
You’d probably like “Lice Team Baby” by Homeboy Sandman. Someone else already mentioned Lice, which is a collaboration of Homeboy Sandman and Aesop Rock. The EP with Lice Team Baby was produced by Aesop, and there’s a ton of reactions out there now to Go Hard (which is also EXCELLENT) from the same EP. My personal favorite Lice track AND Homeboy Sandman verse is “Couple Things.”
when it comes to aesop, some lines dont have literal meaning...its more an ambience or a feeling he is creating. like word association. sometimes he will just but a rhyme together cause it sounds dope. sometimes he layers in personal information or experience, and sometimes pop culture reference. A master for sure
Surprised you don't have more views and subs, not only are you doing Aes but actually catching bars and meanings on a first listen which isn't easy to do with him. Definitely one of my fav artists in any genre. Suggestions from me for Aes tracks would be Kodokushi of this album (Spirit World Field Guide), Gopher Guts off of Skelethon and Facemelter off of the EP "Fast Cars, Danger, Fire and Knives". But tbh any Aes is good Aes, the guy is a lyrical genius.
Nice! 👊🏻 check out Klutz, None Shall Pass, Kodokushi,,,, I’ll stop there because I could drop a hundred song recommendations from him. lol Oh and after you’ve dove a little further into the world of AES you should check out Hail Mary Mallon 👍🏻
Its hard to follow an Aesop Rock song. He has an absurd vocabulary, and he writes mostly in metaphors. You picked up a lot more than other reactors typically do! It normally takes quite a few listens to grasp what he's actually written about.

Aes is the GOAT. He’s been around since ‘97 so his catalogue is fucking enormous. Check out “1,000 o’clock” from the skelethon album
Just added to queue. Yeah I remember him being around the NY Underground back in my last lifetime.

Honestly dude, this whole album is fire.
