  • Years in the making, the Floyd Rose FRX Tremolo System has finally been approved and manufactured! This is the official instructional video, where Floyd himself guides you through the installation and possible set-up variations of this revolutionary system. The FRX is designed to retrofit Gibson-style guitars, and comes with both standard and metric posts to retrofit both Gibson and Epiphone guitars, along with many other guitar brands that utilize the Tune-O-Matic bridge and tailpiece combo. The bridge can be easily set up blocked (EVH style), fully floating and a new variation called “assisted floating” for better tuning stability than ever before on a floating Floyd Rose system. No routing is required, only two small wood screws are necessary to mount the FRX locking nut behind your guitar’s existing nut!
Thanks for watching, and feel free to contact support@floydrose.com with any questions!
If you would like to be one of the first guitarists to pre-order and receive this system, pre-order directly from FloydRose.com!

They sounded like a tin can and broke within a month with light use. I've always been a Floyd fan otherwise. The F.R. trem was one of the single greatest contributions and innovations to the instrument ever. It changed entire genres of rock playing. Thanks you for all of that.

I love the 'it's a problem if you drill through the head stock." I'm guessing there are people who don't wrap a piece of tape around the drill bit to guide the depth, but they probably aren't trying to install one of these on a $1000+ guitar. You usually only do that once...

It looks like it's the same as the original floyd rose bridge. You have to slack the string, loosen the nut with an allen key, nudge it a bit in the right direction, tighten everything back up and repeat with every string. Once you get it set up though you don't need to adjust it again unless you change string gauges or tunings. Hope this helped

I have a ton of complaints on this thing. The first of many is the fact that the only videos out there on the installation of this bridge is on flat body guitars. No arched body guitars like Les Paul styled. The installation and set up instructions are vague AT BEST!!
    Specific complaints:
    1. Height of "intonation posts" being 5/8" of an inch in this video. That works on flat top guitars. Not arched.
    2. String height/action screws: do these have to be set so base plate is level?
    3. How about a video on installation completely from scratch and not preset/ after the fact. Like, string height abs all the other setup bullshit only comes after truss rod adjustment.
    4. Intonation issues: strings cannot be intonated because of all of previous mentioned problems. Strings 1, 2 and 3 saddles can't be moved forward anymore because they're already on the forward screw position.
    5. The tension adjustment screw is not centered in the back hole which needs to be supposedly. All talk about this and nothing is discussed about how to make sure it is.
Great ideas behind the unit but Floyd Rose R&D needed about 5 more years of testing. The marketing department is a joke at best. The support department doesn't fucking exist because not only have I attempted contact but so many others have tried and failed also.

I'm Sorry, I just received mine in the mail, opened the box and it was incredible with a beautiful gold finish. Almost too good to believe until I flipped it over and realized I had bought Pot Metal (inexpensive die cast zinc ) with a shiny finish, It even looks like the knife edges are pot metal, I sending it right back....One drop and it's likely to fracture . Unless I got a bootlegged copy (fake) which would make sense but I don't think is the case, Why did you cheap out on manufacturing, You are a legend in tremolo's , your original model was all German hardened steel, your Speedloader was incredible fine machined steel, except for the fact you can't get strings for it and makes it obsolete it was a perfection way ahead of it's time. Now this Pot metal unit, really? unless you can get one of the 10 only limited (unobtanium) Titanium units made for $2999.00, you have to go with cast monkey metal that's lighter than aluminum. Could you at least make one thats machined steel with hardened pivots to put on Premium guitars. Bring back the love, sorry, highly disappointed . Please tell me I'm wrong, is this why there's no information listed about what's it's made of.

I have a couple of suggestion for the locking nut.
Couldn't you just use the original holes for the truss rod cover to retrofit it in there, and include a magnetic truss rod cover with the locking nut, that just snaps in place against the metal in the locking nut support plate? I say that because I'd imagine the holes for the cover are more than sufficient to hold the locking mechanism in place (specially with the strings holding it against the neck as well), and having a magnetic cover would be much more convenient than dealing with screws.

Awesome design, but I think that there is one little flaw.
If the locking nut and truss rod cover are one piece, why not just use the middle locking nut allen wrench screw to secure the bottom part of the locking nut to the headstock where there already was an existing hole from the original truss rod cover? That way you wouldn't need to drill those two extra holes.

This is a good idea, surprised no one has come out with something like this already. The advantage is that your Gibson will finally be in tune, and stay that way!
That being said, there are a few curious things about this design:
    1. Cutting the ball ends off of the string, I have always disliked this about FR designs. Why not design it so you can leave the ball ends on and then clamp?
    2. Everything adjusts with hex keys. I know this is standard for many guitars, but wouldn't a way to avoid that be more innovative? Notice how he skips over the part where you have to get the strings on and get that puppy intonated. My experience with FRT is that it always takes lots of time, and is somewhat painful.
    3. You avoid routing the body, but you still have to put extra holes in the headstock.
I would have to play it to see how it feels for picking hand muting and such. I am not much of a FRT player though, so maybe I am not the target market. IDK, doesn't seem to be that big of deal to me

well to address your first issue, the problem with leaving the ball ends on (khalers and ibanez trems let you do this) is that the ends of the strings (just above the ball where the string comes back up and is wrapped around a few times) is a weak point. Not many string companies make this part strong enough. Most players that use khalers will actually solder the ends of their strings to fix this issue. It is actually easier and more secure to just clip the ends off or do the Tom Morrello thing and put the strings on backwards.

    • @Taldaran
      @Taldaran 9 років тому +1

Jacob Vieira you still have to clip off the ends of the wound strings when you do the Morello thing.

      Jacob Vieira
True about the string ball ends, I have had them just fail on regular guitars. What I was thinking was a mechanism that allowed you to feed the ball in, then clamp the string without having to remove the ball end. Cutting the string ball off is just an extra step that could, in theory, be eliminated.

    • @Andyjpro
      @Andyjpro 9 років тому +5

You could just put the string through the tuning posts backwards so that the ball end is on the headstock side. No ball end removal necessary and it really cuts down on the eye poke factor

@@nirki No. ESP's and even Schecters often have tune o'matic bridges. Not just Gibsons... Though, many of these guitars that I'm referring to are string through, this is not always the case. I have known quite a few guitarists that have owned fixed bridge 7-string guitars from companies like these that would have loved the option to have a Floyd. A lot of these people ended up installing Kahler top mounts instead... In fact, a couple of Death Metal bands that I was in insisted on their guitarists having 7-string guitars with Floyd Rose bridges. However, this is more important for the lead guitarist. If you're more of a groove guy, that mainly plays drop tuning rhythm guitar that relies strictly on low "chuggs" and pinch harmonics, then maybe all that I'm saying doesn't apply. In conclusion, IF it's worth it for Floyd Rose to make a top mount floating bridge for Gibson (6 string) guitars, it shouldn't be that far off to make them for 7 string. After all, Kahler made one...

@@nirki Uhm. Not really. This isn't only for Gibsons, but anything with a tune o'matic and stop tail piece... That's one of the many standard fixed bridges of the guitar world besides the hard tail strat and the many variations of that. Gibson just uses that style almost exclusively. As I said, ESP and Schecter (as well as other companies) use this bridge style also. They just seem to prefer the string-through variety of the same bridge, which Gibson also uses often (ex: Gibson Korina Flying V), but not as often as the variation with the stop tail piece. And no, Ibanez guitars have NEVER come standard with Floyd Rose bridges. You're thinking of the "Edge" system or their other systems based on the Floyd bridge, which are not made of the same high quality steel as a floyd rose. So you can expect problems with heavy use. Again, it really depends on your level of professionalism and experience, but I feel even on a semi-professional level, you can expect problems with bridges with lower grade metal. I'm not saying that the Ibanez floating system is bad, but I, like many other guitarists, prefer Floyd Rose for quality, consistency and tone.

Talking about the nut or anything that requires small screws....you don't need to drill anything, you can go with the screws alone and they will just go in by themselves. In case you wanna make sure the screws go straight softly hammer a small nail first to create a channel. You won't crack the wood as long as you don't go super fast in with an electric screwdriver.
I've done this over and over on many of my guitars....just don't waste your time drilling. Drilling also can create a problem if the hole is too wide. Believe me, just don't drill, is only needed when the screws are thick.

I figured two screws would be easy. I measured many times, found the drill bit closest to the diameter of the screws without going over, did the 2.5mm pilot screw per the booklet, went more like 5mm because the screws were stubborn, turned slowly and carefully, and then... stripped one screw and broke the head off the other right as it got tight.
So my Les Paul's headstock is a mess. I'm not even sure what to do. I've used screws in maybe hundreds or thousands of jobs, but can't remember something like this happening. I'm at a loss of what to do.

I thought about using 0000 steel wool to "dull" the neck & get it to match the rest of the guitar. It's a Great Guitar & the Original Floyd makes a World of difference in tuning intonation...
