Hey man, thank you very much for the advice. You're the only person on UA-cam discussing this transmission jittering issue with Honda pilots. About 2 months ago, I was on the market for 2017-2020 Honda pilots, 6-speed ones. I test-drove about 6 cars, and 4 of them had some sort of transmission jittering issue. One of them was so bad that I had to stop driving because the salesperson thought something was wrong with the car. Only 2 were without problems and they were both at the Honda Dealership where I'm assuming they have changed the fluid because those cars had to be certified. I bought one from Rick Case Hyundai/ Genesis/ Kia/Audi dealership in Duluth, Georgia, and it had the same issue. I felt the jittering at low-speed gear shifting but I still ended up buying the car because they gave me 10 years 100k, engine, transmission, and drive-axle warranty and it had a very clean interior. After driving for a few hundred miles, the jittering issue started irritating me. So I followed your advice to drain-fill it three times (I wanted to do three but I only had 8 bottles of DW-1, Honda Genuine trans fluid, so I've only done two times), and man, I'm telling you, the transmission felt so much better right away. I say, 90% of the jittering was gone. It had 65K miles at the time, and I'm guessing the previous owner never changed the trans fluid because the fluid was soo dark and the magnetic drain plug had so much black thick tar-like stuff on it. I've driven about 8K miles after those flushes and now I want to do another flush. Hope it fixes the very little jittering that's left in it. I've changed the oil once already and going to do one very soon. I'm a bit worried that the previous owner might not have taken care of it well because I do not see much carfax service/oil change history on it. It had a clogged windshield wiper fluid reservoir filter because the blue wiper fluid it had in the reservoir broke down and created a thick blue slushy. The fluid pump came out of the reservoir socket, I'm guessing because the water could not pass through the filter. I took it to my local Honda dealership and they said the whole reservoir and the pump need to be replaced and it's $490 total. I thought that was excessive, so I decided to buy an aftermarket reservoir and motor for $50 and change it myself. When I took the wheel cover off to inspect, I found out that the fluid pump is running but it popped out of the socket. I was not able to take the whole reservoir off because it would require me to take the front bumper off, and I felt it was not worth it. Kinda frustrating that Honda put the reservoir bolts in out-of-view places. I was able to clean the filter and everything, and ran water through the reservoir and the fluid pump several times; man there was soo much of that thick blue slushy. On second thought, I'm thinking somebody might've put 100% thick anti-freeze coolant in it because they put water in it before and it froze and when the ice expanded, the pump got pushed out and I'm guessing they put pure anti-freeze hoping to melt the water. I'm glad to say, it is fully working now after I've cleaned it and put it back in place. One problem I have now is that I hear the wheel-bearing type of noise. Took it to the dealer and they said they were not able to diagnose it as bad wheel bearings. I very much hear the noise when I'm turning or just driving on a nice curvy road. Would you be able to think of any other issues that could cause that noise? I have KUMO tires on and they seem to be in a good condition. The front brake pads are still good and I have not checked the rear brake pads yet. I once had a wheel bearing problem on my 2012 Honda accord and a local mechanic shop changed the wrong wheel bearing. They thought it was the front left but it ended up being the front right wheel. He made me buy the whole wheel hub assembly because it was cheaper to buy that and install it than to change just the bearing. I was disappointed that they've done this so I rented a wheel bearing tool from Orileys and changed just the other bearing myself. After these incidents, I find it hard to believe a mechanic if he just wants to replace parts without doing much diagnostics. Again, thanks for your videos. Now I know what to look for if these common issues occur to me; and thank you very much for reading my rant. Hope you continue making videos on Hondas.

Good to know. In addition if you have an AWD with the ZF 9 speed the ONLY way to put it in neutral manually is to have a tool that turns a little shaft on top of the trans and holds in the neutral position. Its spring loaded so the tool has to stay in place should your car ever have to be winched up onto the tow truck. Honda sells their own tool ($$) or if your like me I made my own. It consists of a handle that stays on the shaft and a pin that is dropped into the end of the handle to hold it in place. I also have a $12 circuit that disables the auto stop/start feature..:)

I have a 2022 SE, but I didn't hear anything about transmission issues. My 9-speed is absolutely terrible. You never know what each gear shift is going to do. Sometimes it is buttery smooth, then the next one will be like a hard sport shift. When coming to a stop, the downshifts feel like someone is hitting the brakes multiple times as it downshifts to each lower gear. And once you are moving, the throttle response is like an on/off switch and goes from 0 to 15% so there is absolutely no way to press on the gas without feeling the car move forward. So much of what I thought was the transmission in my 2019 Passport was actually that awful VCM "feature" kicking engine cylinders on and off to keep the EPA happy. Installing a VCM Tuner was like getting a new car.

We bought a 2019 Passport with 66K miles. We're changing all the fluids and filters we can as well as cleaning the MAP sensor and front brakes and rotors. The questions I have are 1) where is the fuel filter located? 2) the horn doesn't work. We changed the fuse and the car has no diagnostic codes. Where is the horn located and what can we do to fix it? Thanks in advance.
I have a 2016 Pilot. I thought my Transmission was clunky because I am in alot of stop and go traffic often. Yes, changing it at the right mileage is exactly right.
I had a 2022 Pilot. I called the Auburn, Wa dealer for the transmission fluid change. $610. OUCH! The fluid on Amazon was $111 for 4 quarts. Also, OUCH, but at least doable. The transmission fluid change is easier than an oil change.
@@BCautosutions Can you please explain what you mean by “people who follow the terrible maintenance minder”? I’ve been seeing a lot of videos saying that automakers’ auto fluid change schedules are not frequent enough for some situations. Is that what you mean? Thanks (I don’t have a Pilot, but I do have the mechanically almost identical 2021 Passport).
I was looking into getting a 2019 Pilot but not if I have to drain and fill the ATF every 15k. That’s absurd! My 2007 Accord V6 gets drained and filled every 60k and it’s always been pink when drained.
We have a 2020 pilot 6 SPD 50k miles coming the end of a long lease. Got the trans judder! (Never changed fluid maybe once? ) also have a fairly big leak between transfer case and trans which I was surprised at. Also Had the cracking noise coming from the dash on and off. Otherwise good but IMHO that's bad for a honder
For the 9zf tranny, If do it at home without the scan tool to read the tranny temperature, can I measure the amount coming out, and put the same back into the tranny? It’s best to let pilot be cold to perform this procedure? Looking forward for your respond. Also, if you have a chance to make a video( if you are serving)of changing the 9zf tranny fluid that be great! Thank you for all your video content!! I am a diy.
Yes exactly, measure what comes out and put in the exact same amount (assuming there are no leaks). Sometimes things are too complicated and can be simplified very easily. I will definitely make a video. Thanks for the support!
Have you heard of or found a repair in the rear hatch leaks? Mine doesn't seem to leak into the hatch but instead leaks into the door frame, leaks through the interior trim then into the rear driver side compartment.
Just what mentioned. 6at has juddeing issues sometimes leading to torque converter and or trans replacements. The 9at shifts weird sometimes but solid otherwise. Also leaks at the front diff seals.
Negative in both. The boots are always oily but not actually leaking unless your referring to something else. No oil pump seepage yet on these that I’ve noticed.
Hey! Appreciate your videos. We bought a 2019 Pilot a few months ago, shortly after purchase; transmission jolting back and forth going up hills, dealership found no issue, few weeks later car broke down, dealership replaced battery and transmission, 1 month later the car broke down in the middle of the interstate with our kids in the car (same breakdown scenario, car downshifting and won't accelerate then bunch of blinking warning lights on dash, then car won't restart) now dealership is saying something about fuel delivery system. But we're scared to get back in this car, do you have any advice?
I have a 2016 pilot the seat heater are partially working the bottom part on passenger and driver side doesn't work but the back part does so i can tell it's not the fuse, i need help .😢😢

I purchased a 2019 EX-L with 55K. Not sure if the transmission fluid was ever changed, so I went ahead and did a 3x drain and fill as well as changed the filter. How do you tell if the transmission was damaged?
In this day and age transmission fluids come high in detergents. How many drain and fills is over kill? I figure one at every 15k interval would enough to dilute the old stuff?
Yes, it’s very frustrating both for the consumer and the technicians. Luckily 2023 models are around the corner, hopefully they dropped the MOST system and have the proven 10at mated to a 3.5L version of the current tlx/mdx - S quad cam non turbo.

@@BCautosutions it surprised me as well. I bought it brand new and when I took it to the dealer for its 2 year inspection they noticed an oil leak. After waiting 3 months for the part to come in because it back ordered, I was told it couldn't be installed because there were pits and scratches in the engine cylinder. WTH?? Transmission fluid drain and fills are such a rip-off, way worse than an oil change. Changing ATF is easier than changing oil. Your fluid is $50-$80 depending on where you live. Pop the drain plug, drain, replace crush washer, refill through the dipstick holder with a little funnel and a longer one. You don’t have to change the filter. Save yourself $100-150 if you have a 3/8 ratchet, ramps and a little kitchen funnel.
@@pragmaticoptimist46 yes absolutely if you can do it yourself then I encourage 💯. Fact is most people don’t want to be bothered but on a simple setup like the 6at and even the 9at it’s easily doable. On the 10at (offered on the 2023 pilot) sometimes can be a lot less space friendly due to fill location. Anyways appreciate your input and thanks for watching!
All valid points. I’m on the 3rd set of rotor pads, 15-20k and they start causing vibrations. Transmission, been doing ATF d&f every 10k, also had to install the ATF cooler to lower running temps. VCM muzzler is a must, totally changes how the car drives and tranny fluid doesn’t get burnt as fast. Compliance bushings on the front control arms start tearing at 30-40k mark.
Do you know why I get this message got it 2 times Anti Theft System This system has lost power. Push and hold the power button for more than two seconds to enable the system Solution for this

@Hondamobilemechanic I checked them there good a d clean .yesterday was a very bitter freezing day after snow storm and its 18 degrees out very windy probably one of tge coldest we had might play a part on a cold start you think .never did it before it just happened 2 times .maybe a tale of replacing battery as we talked about preventative maintenance maybe .car was made 7/19 .it's a 2020 so it's origanal equipment
I just had the front head assembly replaced in my 2019 Pilot EXL. It was really just the camshaft, but since that part was on national backorder and my Pilot was still under powertrain warranty at less than 50K miles, they replaced the entire head assembly because they could get that part sooner. This will probably be the last Honda I ever buy.
Whith the pilot even the 2017 6 speed transmission or 9 speed are jerky transmissions.....litterally need to change the trans fluid every few thousand miles....draining the transmission fluid is a mist for these cars.
Honda with 6 speed transmission every 15,000 miles. I don’t believe you because the ones that have that low mile to change fluid would the Subarus with CVT’s i need sources to see that. NO CAP

The questions I have are 1) where is the fuel filter located? 2) the horn doesn't work. We changed the fuse and the car has no diagnostic codes. Where is the horn located and what can we do to fix it? Thanks in advance.

I had a 2022 Pilot. I called the Auburn, Wa dealer for the transmission fluid change. $610. OUCH! The fluid on Amazon was $111 for 4 quarts. Also, OUCH, but at least doable. The transmission fluid change is easier than an oil change.
Yeah it is
V6 Hondas/Acuras (including the Pilot) have Cylinder Deactivation. Is that a common problem too?
Yes on the older models and typically it’s people who follow the terrible maintenance minder.
@@BCautosutions Can you please explain what you mean by “people who follow the terrible maintenance minder”?
I’ve been seeing a lot of videos saying that automakers’ auto fluid change schedules are not frequent enough for some situations. Is that what you mean? Thanks

I was looking into getting a 2019 Pilot but not if I have to drain and fill the ATF every 15k. That’s absurd! My 2007 Accord V6 gets drained and filled every 60k and it’s always been pink when drained.

Believe it or not, I’ve been trying for weeks and can’t get one to line up with my schedule. I’m on it as soon as I can.
Do you have any recommendations for good replacement parts like the rotors that won’t warp
Mdx/tlx Type S rotors/calipers comes to mind. Don’t think it’s a straight up bolt on process tho.
Do you recommend installing an S-VCM controller to deactivate the VCM on a 2020 Pilot EX? I've read that it will help with the transmission issue.
@@michaelerberich5466 no I don’t and no it will not. All it may do is enhance drive ability a bit and prolongue engine mount life.

Yes and no, some yes although some are different. I made a ridgeline video just like this one recently.
For the 9zf tranny, If do it at home without the scan tool to read the tranny temperature, can I measure the amount coming out, and put the same back into the tranny?

Hey! Appreciate your videos. But we're scared to get back in this car, do you have any advice?
Hey sorry to hear about your experience. If you can get me some trouble codes I can better guide you and give you my advise.

Could be a few different reasons, it can even come on due to an engine code so it doesn’t self destruct.

For sure it can.
I purchased a 2019 EX-L with 55K. Not sure if the transmission fluid was ever changed, so I went ahead and did a 3x drain and fill as well as changed the filter.

Any lights? Any crazy harsh shifts or engagement? I’m assuming you have the 6at? If it’s still super dark do it again twice.
In this day and age transmission fluids come high in detergents. How many drain and fills is over kill? I figure one at every 15k interval would enough to dilute the old stuff?

On a pilot? Wow that’s surprising
@@BCautosutions it surprised me as well. I bought it brand new and when I took it to the dealer for its 2 year inspection they noticed an oil leak.
Forgot to mention….great video by the way. Awesome content.
@@pragmaticoptimist46 yes absolutely if you can do it yourself then I encourage 💯. Fact is most people don’t want to be bothered but on a simple setup like the 6at and even the 9at it’s easily doable.
