  • After a long search and comparison process we settled in on the Hardin two frame professional honey extractor. Though it's called a "professional" extractor I can't imagine a professional using such a small unit to extract honey. It seems to be suited for the hobbyist with a few hives as it only extracts two frames at a time so the name is kind of a misnomer.
There are three companies selling this extractor or a three frame version; Hardin, Little Giant Farm & Ag, and VIVO. They are all the same extractor at different price points so purchase wisely.
Here is a link to the Hardin two frame model we purchased. If you decide to buy one please use this link from our Amazon Associates program, we receive a small commission and it won't cost you any more money.

Get a little giant. Plenty of clearance.

How did the extractor work out

well funny you should ask. I ended up selling it for a 4/8 frame extractor. I can't recommend a 2 frame tangential extractor for the simple reason the foundation will blow out of the frame at any reasonable RPM. I bought an electric 4/8 frame and never looked back. It's faster, extracts more honey, easier, and no blow outs. I bought the VEVO. It does 8 mediums radially or 4 deeps tangentially. I run mediums so it works well for me. There are lots of variations of my unit on Amazon but they seem to be built by the same company with minor modifications. I like the basket in mine as it has "tabs" to keep the frames from flopping around while the RPMs come up. The longer you let it spin, within reason, the more complete the extraction is. I'm going to say about 15 - 20% more honey than hand crank. If you buy one please use the amazon link in the notes. I'll get a small commission and you won't pay extra.

+Turkey Turkey Yup, that's a pain. Take a piece of paper and put on the hole where the bearing sits. Use your thumb or finger and push down on the paper to make an indentation of the hole on the paper. Go to the hardware store and find the stainless steel ball bearing bin and find one that sits in the depression in the paper. Bingo! Now buy a mess of them so you have them on hand. Make sure it's a stainless steel bearing because it is much harder steel and won't wear too fast. You could also bring the basket to the store. The bearing is just a tad smaller than the steel rod. Hope that works for you.
Now you need a lubricant. You can buy food grade grease on line or I use some shortening and find it works okay. Just don't use too much, just a dab is all you need.
