Gotta come back here and give salutes! Thanks for doing your part, Johnny! It blew my mind to walk into the store and buy Shenmue on a modern system today, still stunned, WTF, a great day!
this blew my mind back at release and really opened my mind on games and what they could be, all of the life sim elements and a really brilliant world. almost alll of my friends didn't like it but I was obsessed between it and later the second one. still in my top 5 games ever and maybe the most important/changing games for me in my life.
Damn this is a great video on Shenmue! Really took me back, man. I know it might sound overly sappy, but playing Shenmue growing up was an extremely special time of my life and I really appreciate the fact that you and others have shared with me similar experiences and feelings with Shenmue. Your ability to articulate it all and conjure up nostalgia is fantastic. Great job!
This video actually brought tears to my eyes. Take that as a sign of how important the Dreamcast, and Shenmue can be to people who were there for that golden moment, at the peak of Dreamcast's popularity. Every day felt like heaven. The online capabilities, albeit limited, were still so far ahead of anything at the time. It enabled access to amazing online communities like PSO, and special features like the ones in Sonic Adventure, trading chaos and the like.
Absolutely great, GREAT memories! Thank you sooooo much for the reminiscing, everything you felt, saw, experienced, I did too. One of, if not, my best video game experiences of all time, and from all the way over here in Coventry, England :-)
Yu Suzuki said he wants Shenmue 3 as much as we do. And he said if he could get the go to make these games again, the story he has in mind would end around Shenmue 5. He's also considering Kickstarter for funds, so be on the lookout for that.
I was like 8 years old when I first saw my cousins playing Shenmue!!!! My cousins always asked me to come and listen to the soundtrack with them! So epic! Shenmue needs a REMAKE!!!
This game brings back such great memories. I remember going through some hard times back in school but coming home and playing this game just made me forget everything. The soundtrack was so beautiful and soothing and i just loved playing every minute of it. Thank you Yu Suzuki for giving me such a great childhood
Just have to say that this is still my favourite youtube channel. Thanks so much for having put together this little corner of the internet. It always makes me happy when I visit :)
Shenmue 3 will be a very special experience. I bet it'd involve menial, old fashion tasks around bailu village. Pumping water from wells, chopping wood. At this point they don't have to be cutting edge in the graphics dept, otherwise it'd be awkward and photorealistic, they should just go with more of an art direction, which would take less tech resources and cut development time.
Love to see this video now. I feel like the 14 years of waiting were nothing now. But I definitely don t want this to happen ever again. Thx for your passion as always.
Your passion for the game makes me want to play it and I’m extremely happy for you that 8 years later after making this video you will get the third game and conclusion you had good thoughts and hopes for. I hope you enjoy it and brings you something special
This video is how i found your channel. I re-watch it from time to time, it has to be the best video that really captures the excitement of the time leading up to the release and the feel of the game. Keep up all the great work.
dude this game was definitely amazing for it's time. the voice acting in it being cheesy is honestly one of the bigger charms for me in the game lol i also liked that it was based in the 80's :D But yeah man great stuff and great vid :D
I love your enthusiasm for these games!! I remember first reading about Shenmue in "NEXT-GEN" magazine and how excited I was about the prospect of playing a Virtua Fighter adventure game. But it became so much more than that! I love the characters in the game and the experiences you go through playing as Ryo.I wish as well we could see a resoultion to the story.. playing it all out in our Dreamcast!! R.I.P. Dreamcast.
You said it all, Johnny! I remember when I got shenmue. At that time I must have been around 12 or 13 years old. Because I'm from germany, my english wasn't as good as today at that time, but I still managed to understand everything in the game and follow the story. Looking back today, I really think shenmue had an impact on my english-learning experience. :)
I finally invested the money in a Dreamcast version of Shenmue (I'm from Germany, so getting it wasn't too difficult). I only played the Xbox Version so far and I am excited experience the game it was originally meant to be played. Right now I'm finishing Shenmue for the 5th time (I had an unfinished save somewhere on Disc 2) to import my save. I want wait to play the second one again! For the 3rd or 4th time, I think.
I remember when the first one came out, I was in high school and had read about it in a gaming magazine a buddy brought to school. My younger cousin has a Dreamcast and got the game, and I was so excited to play it. It was everything I ever wanted in a videogame at that time, havinf complete freedom in a big, interactive world. Unfortunatly, it was the first and only game that's ever completely overwhelmed me. I was used to not having a clear objective and there was SO much to do it just blew my mind! Another thing was I grew up mostly on Nintendo consoles, so I didn't know what a lot of the collectibles were and didn't have much of a desire to go after them. But I will always look at it as one of the most interesting, innovative games of it's time. The magazine said it was supposed to be like 7 games or something and it's sad they never got to see it through to the end being so.far ahead of it's time.
I Remember playing shenmue, the atmosphere really sets you in the mood, it feels like you are really in japan with Ryo, it is a really amazing game, some of the things in there you havent seen done before, love the series I hope they make a third one soon.
Just saw this video, I was a hardcore RPG gamer back in 1997-2002. I played the first shenmue in 2000 when i just graduate from high school and about the same age as Ryo. I played like a lots of lots of RPG. And that time, nothing close to Shenmue experience. Really even until now, this the only game that i still remember every single details in it. Its really grow in to you. The experience and the story is kinda stuck in your mind.
That Lan Di helicopter scene on the rooftop in shenmue 2 still gives me chills, one of the best gaming moments ive experienced ever no matter what i achieve in this life a chapter will be missing if I don't get to complete this game series
Playing Shenmue via VGA is sex to the eyes, seeing this game in its native 480p is something to behold if you keep in mind the game came out nearly 15 years ago. So many great titles on Dreamcast.
One of my all time favorite games. I remember it was summer and I was just watching TV, and my brother gave me this game for my birthday. I had no idea what the game was and just put it in. And when I started playing I got hooked. I literally played for 15 hours straight, then I went to sleep, and played another 15 hours and finished it. Only time I took off was for bathroom breaks and I ate during cutscenes. Every part of the game I loved and I spent so much time with each aspect of the game.
Great review Johnny. I found your channel by searching for Guardian Heros reviews and since I saw yours I haven't looked back. This is another great review capturing all the nostalgia I had when I first played it.
When you showed the few clips of that walk through the forest in shenmue 2... it totally revealed some lost memories of when I played that game.. I remember knowing the game was about to end.. I stopped and looked at all the scenery, I knew at the time that there was no way for shenmue 3 so I predicted the ending... I had no idea it would go in that direction!! I just feel really sad for the people who tried the game and didn't give it a chance or those who haven't played it before. It's great!
It is so refreshing to finally see someone who is dedicated to gaming who aren't "angry" for once. I'm just so tired of seeing angry this and angry that. Keep it up mate you actually gained one sub.
just platinumed the remastered version on ps4. love every moment of it besides coming close to the forklift race lmaooo the game was like a shout out to the martial arts films.
I'm the ultimate shembue fan! Ive been dreaming of a number 3 for years, I'm so excited now it's a reality. People say the game is boring etc etc, but I think Its got something special no other game has ever had.
No game has ever transported me to another place and drenched me in atmosphere like Shenmue. Although granted, a lot of that had to do with being 14-15 when I was playing it. Best Christmas!
Awesome Video Johnny!!!! I've only played bits and pieces of the first Shenmue game. I definitely can appreciate what the game did at that time. Going from place to place, around the town, going into peoples homes.....amazing. Soundtrack to this game is one of my favorite soundtracks to listen to. Awesome as always :-)
This is still my favourite game of all time. I preordered both & have played them numerous times. None of my friends get how great this is. It's an open world martial arts revenge epic set in 1980s Asia with countless things one can do. I am getting kind of bitter that SEGA has made SEVEN Yakuza games but can't just let me find out what happened to these characters I love so much more.
Ive been waiting for this review from your enthusiastic perspective since you had shenmue on your top ten list very long ago. It was worth the wait. Thanks Johnny you really Rock!
Awesome look back at this series! I loved both games, but Shenmue 2 was incredible. The way disc 3 ended and transitioned to disc 4...the changes in setting and mood and everything was so beautiful...a moving and wonderful way to close Shenmue 2 and leave you set up for the 3rd installment which was unfortunately never to be. But at least we got two Shenmue games! And the PAL packaging for 2 is so great I was actually a little glad it wasn't released on the Dreamcast in North America. :)
I played Shenmue for the first time earlier last year, I have been a gamer for 17 years and nothing has sucked me in to a game more than Shenmue, I'd go as far as to say it's one of the best games I've ever played. Sure the graphics may have aged, but they're good enough to create a believable world and you can still make out the minute details. Plus using the Dreamcasts VGA output into a HDMI converter really is a sight to behold.
this game blew my mind when i was young. totally agree with everything this dude had to say. i had never played anything like it. next to ocarina of time, shenmue was one of the first truly epic immersifying gaming experiences i had growing up and it will always hold a special place in my heart
Sega dreamcast is my favorite console, and I have never even owned one! I used to play the ol' DC at my friends house all the friggin' time. I played Powerstone, MVC2, PSO, Sonic adventure. But I had never played Shenmue, and from every review i've seen of it, it looks awesome. God, I hope this comes to X-box live soon. Best part of this game, the main character's dad is played by Segata sanshiro in the japanese version. Now that is awesome.
Shenmue didn't bomb, it sold over 1million copies on a machine that only sold 10 million units, 1 in 10 dreamcast owners bought a copy thats good going, if the dreamcast had of had the sales of the ps2 then you're talking a possible 16 million copies sold. Its also a shame that the re-release of shenmue 2 was an xbox exclusive & didn't appear on ps2 so it had the chance to really shift some copies of the game, xbox only sold 2 and a half times the number of units of the dreamcast so it was never going appear to do well on xbox either, and when you think most xbox users would have never played shenmue 1 so you'd expect players to be less enthusiastic about purchasing it in the 1st place!
Dude....You look like your 12 in this video!! HaHa and I’ve been watching since near the beginning of your channel. I remember watching this when it was 1st posted 8 years ago! I’m 43 Johnny and it’s great to go back and enjoy and remember how different life was just 8 years ago! Thanks for all the video’s man. I watch at least acouple a day! We REALLY need a ALL GEN GAMERS REUNION, even if it’s only 1 podcast!!! Plus it give all you guys a excuse to catch up....ok, now I’m really trying to sell it...HaHa cheers Johnny!
I think that if Sega ever decides to make a third installment in the series, I feel like the first thing to do is go back to their roots and remake the game for modern consoles. And I'm not talking about any sort of virtual console kind of stuff, but more among the lines of an HD remake of both of the first two games. And the reason why I think this would be an excellent idea is because it would transfer the game data from the first game to the second game and all of your figurines, all of your yen, and everything in general would go over the the second game when you start that after ending the first game, and same thing goes for second to third, because you wouldn't be able to transfer the data from the second or first games through the Dreamcast VMU to any of the modern systems. I also think it's a great idea because it would be a great way to start someone in the series who has never played Shenmue before, like myself. I hope people understand what I'm saying because it's kind of hard for me to put the images in my head into words.
johnny thank you for making a shenmue video finally, as a fan waiting for Shenmue III, i at least have a few LOGICAL ideas of how it would at least happen. Ryo would and the villagers would fix that road that was washed away on your trip up there, you would actually see the village and the villagers as well as give you clues on who built the cave, eventually meet up with Ren in some cinematic way, and possibly fight lan di on a mountain top (thats just wishful thinking)..any thought form anyone
totally with you on this, johnny. if you get over the expectation of shenmue being an action game and enjoy it as a life simulation game, it's amazing!
definitely an amazing game to review Johnny! I enjoyed the first shenmue and have been a fan ever since i have played it! it definitely goes on my top 10 list of best Dreamcast games of all time! good review man!
man this video was great, i love your review of Shenmue, perfectly captures how I feel about the series... it is by far the best gaming experience I've ever had in my life, and I have had a lot... Shenmue is great, I implore people who are looking for a great experience to play this series to its entirety... you WILL NOT regret it
I still haven't gotten over the fact that there's no end to Shenmue. It has to be one of my top 3 games of my lifetime. All of your experiences seem very similar to mine. Thanks. Greaty great review.
I remember reserving a copy of this game at Funcoland like it was yesterday. I got the edition that came with the soundtrack [which was also awesome]. Took it home & was amazed at the Graphics, the story, & how the game played. This really was a creative game at the time & even some what today if you ask me. I still have the strategy guide for it & everything. It would be nice if they made 1&2 available for xboxlive & PSN network with updated graphics & save transfers for them. Another Great Vid
I've tried playing these games several times lately for the first time, and they are very difficult to get into. I think I need to get a strategy guide or something. I really WANNA like them!
Yu Suzuki (designer of Shenmue) is doing a 1 hour discussion at GDC 2014 on the birth and development of the games... That's rather innocuous, but it is being translated by Mark Cerny, architect of the PS4. If he doesn't announce the much rumoured, much hinted HD remakes, it'll be like him pissing in my last bowl of cornflakes.
The Shenmue games are a central part of my collection and they are very dear to me. Although I picked them up not to long ago the first game left a huge print on my gamer heart. I have very mixed feelings when I'm playing the second one. Part of me loves the game and would just like to keep on playing it. However, I also feel that I will never be able to play the true ending to it which makes me very sad. Luckily Yu Suzuki has been talking a lot about Shenmue lately. We can only hope.
great vid man, Shenmue deserves as much attention as possible now . I truly believe a third game could easily come. If sega can make Yukuza games, then they could make a Shenmue III with some effort. I really do expect a formal announcement very soon from Sega that 3 is coming out. I honestly believe what killed the first 2 games was that they let the budget get out of control. The games actually sold pretty well in their own right.
I own shenmue 1 and 2 for the dreamcast. Sadly though, shenmue 1 was stolen from my parents when they moved and had it stored in a public storage area. All the games I had were stolen. Expect for shenmue 2. I actually kept it with me because it is so special to me when I moved out. Luckily I did or else it would have been stolen as well. It's funny because the game actually isn't in a case. It's literally 4 non marked silver top black bottom disks in little plastic disk paper sleeves with in red marker marked 1 through 4. Idk who or where my parents got it from online but I'm very glad they did. A very beautiful and amazing game that really deserves a finale.
since online price comparing , we will never find a bargins in local thrift shops. I picked this game up in 2nd hand shop over 15 years ago for £10 it was a mint copy. but that was before the ease of price comparing
I remember playin this game as a kid in grade 6 and loved it, now im 24 and wish they made an hd remake of 1-2 (never played 2) and possible a 3rd, oh yehhh and powerstone. Powwwwerrrrfullll
i love your vids johhny... i just found out about you but have seen ALL your vids now, keep it up, you need to take this channel to the next level, you deserve to be picked up by someone and paid for what you do!!!!!!!!!!!!
Your experience with this game is verbatim my experience. Even the part where you got the second game at a local EB Games despite the lack of a North American release. Fantastic review sir.
i love this game until today, it was one of my best video game experiences ever yet. I remember playin it as a child and it was just fuckin awesome i got the feeling be part of this game
this was the best game i ever played, i gave away my dreamcast and really regret doing it now. i would love to play this game again. i just think the immersion you experience in this game is unlike any other
I loved Shenmue 1 and the sequel even more! Another Sega masterpiece that will go unnoticed by so many and only be appreciated by a few.Yu susuki has said recently that he thinks sega would let him make a third and has been talking about it a lot more recently so that gives me hope! i think if they released the first two on xbox live or in disk compilation they could see if it did well and possibly fund the third third game fingers crossed one day the story will be finished. it deserves to be!
thx for your video, I never played these games and they announced shenmue 3 at sony e3 which lead me here to learn more about it! Looks like they already funded the game in like 9 hrs!
Gotta come back here and give salutes! Thanks for doing your part, Johnny! It blew my mind to walk into the store and buy Shenmue on a modern system today, still stunned, WTF, a great day!
After the Sony conference had to come back and watch this . HYPE !!! SHENMUE 3 is happening !
david haffey I really hope there's a chance for a hd remaster for Shenmue 1 and 2. I have not gotten to play those games in years!
+SuperVegeta25Returns They might do it if Shenmue 3 does well. I don't see them doing it before the game launches.
Shenmue 1 and 2 were announced for remastered, I don't know about console, but on PC they are coming to steam with high graphics options. HYPE!
this blew my mind back at release and really opened my mind on games and what they could be, all of the life sim elements and a really brilliant world. almost alll of my friends didn't like it but I was obsessed between it and later the second one. still in my top 5 games ever and maybe the most important/changing games for me in my life.

i heard its meh.
@@AsianTheDomination there were a lot of mitigating factors. 1 and 2 are definitely better but I'm hoping shenmue 4 will be better than both

But at least we got two Shenmue games! And the PAL packaging for 2 is so great I was actually a little glad it wasn't released on the Dreamcast in North America. :)
one of the greatest video game Series of all time.
Mr Know Nothing i hope shenmue 3 is a great game
this game blew my mind when i was young. totally agree with everything this dude had to say. i had never played anything like it. next to ocarina of time, shenmue was one of the first truly epic immersifying gaming experiences i had growing up and it will always hold a special place in my heart
I agree so much with this review.. Shenmue is like a spiritual experience. I can't believe it came out in 1999. That's so crazy.
Who would of thought 8 years later on the 21s of August the release of Shenmue 1 & 2 would be coming out. Happy days 😂
i have shemnue 2 for the first xbox it came with the dvd movie!great game1
Kawayolnyo
The elitism is real
+Kawayolnyo How exactly is Shenmue II bad on the Xbox? Didn't the Xbox version have better visuals and frame rate?
best game of all time!
Barney Happosai Shenmue 3 is back - www.kickstarter.com/projects/ysnet/shenmue-3
shtml54 thanks! i already threw my wallet at it ;D can't wait!!!!!!!!
It took me about an hour to sink in lol
Barney KittyGang Yes it is.
Umm... no.
YOU'RE SO YOUNG HERE HOLY FUCK
I watched this video back in 9th grade -- I'm now almost out of College, Johnny, what a difference!
Yeah it is crazy to see! nearly 7 years ago!
Shenmue didn't bomb, it sold over 1million copies on a machine that only sold 10 million units, 1 in 10 dreamcast owners bought a copy thats good going, if the dreamcast had of had the sales of the ps2 then you're talking a possible 16 million copies sold. Its also a shame that the re-release of shenmue 2 was an xbox exclusive & didn't appear on ps2 so it had the chance to really shift some copies of the game, xbox only sold 2 and a half times the number of units of the dreamcast so it was never going appear to do well on xbox either, and when you think most xbox users would have never played shenmue 1 so you'd expect players to be less enthusiastic about purchasing it in the 1st place!
it sold between 1.2 and 1.5 million units in fact. but it wasn't a system seller unfortunately
Shenmue 1 was 70 billion dollars, shemue 1 almost bankrupted sega shenmue 2 was a bigger success only because Microsoft had more money at the time
Dude....You look like your 12 in this video!!
The graphics to this game still look good today. That's pretty impressive.
Started playing this again. I remember how free a game it was to play when it originally came out. Wow! What an immense game
totally with you on this, johnny. if you get over the expectation of shenmue being an action game and enjoy it as a life simulation game, it's amazing!
I loved, loved, LOVED Shenmue and Shenmue II.
Great memories.
definitely an amazing game to review Johnny! I enjoyed the first shenmue and have been a fan ever since i have played it! it definitely goes on my top 10 list of best Dreamcast games of all time! good review man!
the mechanic Shenmue had when picking up stuff like oranges and checking it out is basically just like the one in L.A Noire, way before L.A Noire
MY first HCG episode, great to see the show not slowing down :)
man this video was great, i love your review of Shenmue, perfectly captures how I feel about the series... it is by far the best gaming experience I've ever had in my life, and I have had a lot...
Ah... I remember that ODCM demo disc.
I kept watching that Shenmue preview over and over and over.
Finally a high quality look at the series, so glad to see that you have finally covered this man, thank you.
Played this when I was 14, I'm 22 now and still play it on my Xbox-360, true fan :)
Shenmue is one of the most unique experiences in video gaming. It's really....something else.
Shenmue 1 and 2 was amazing. Way ahead of its time. I wish 3 would come on a newer system
Simon Austin it seems as though that was the event where shenmue 3 was given new life
The Shenmue games are a central part of my collection and they are very dear to me.
Shenmue was a good game. We loved it back then. I wish I could play it again :-(
great vid man, Shenmue deserves as much attention as possible now .
Just found a copy of Shenmue at my local retro game store. Can't wait to play it!
How much did you pay for it ?
+Tear lover $50.
thewelf2 normal price
since online price comparing , we will never find a bargins in local thrift shops.
Powwwwerrrrfullll
i love your vids johhny... i just found out about you but have seen ALL your vids now, keep it up, you need to take this channel to the next level, you deserve to be picked up by someone and paid for what you do!!!!!!!!!!!!
great seeing your vids back on youtube, especially a review on shenmue , such a good game how can anyone think shenmue is boring?!
Great old video! So psyched about shenmue 3!!
Your experience with this game is verbatim my experience. Even the part where you got the second game at a local EB Games despite the lack of a North American release. Fantastic review sir.
I think the graphics have a sort of ageless quality. And the music IS eerie, yes. So atmospheric. Cannot describe those feelings...
i love this game until today, it was one of my best video game experiences ever yet.
Another Sega masterpiece that will go unnoticed by so many and only be appreciated by a few.Yu susuki has said recently that he thinks sega would let him make a third and has been talking about it a lot more recently so that gives me hope! i think if they released the first two on xbox live or in disk compilation they could see if it did well and possibly fund the third third game fingers crossed one day the story will be finished. it deserves to be!
this is one of my favourite videos by HCG, I just saw it for the theird time..
thx for your video, I never played these games and they announced shenmue 3 at sony e3 which lead me here to learn more about it! Looks like they already funded the game in like 9 hrs!
Would love to give this franchise another shot. Couldnt appreciate it back in the day.
