    My memory:
My character named "Noob" died in the dunes and luckily someone shouted for a raise.
    Raise at for Noob please.
Random shout "dont call the dead guys noobs please!"

Passion is exploding from these two. Never played the game, but I can just feel how great it must have been by how they talk about it. Diablo 2 was the closest thing for me. I played that game so much. I had a 96 javazon, a 93 barbar, and a 91 zealot. Pretty much maxed equipment.

I played Everquest (PC) for years and it's uncanny how similar some of your experiences in FFXI are to some of mine from EQ. Corpse runs, trains, grinding for hours on end for exp and gear. The comraderie with other players. Ah the good ole days.

I can relate to you guys so much lol. It’s super exciting when you meet someone in real life that actually played XI. It feels like such an obscure game even though it’s a successful MMO. I went to hang out with a friend one day and I saw her boyfriend playing XI and we were both freaking out because we were so excited to meet another person who played XI. Went home that night and transfered to his server lol

O M G. Im almsot weeping seeing this. So many hours, so much fun. First run in the city, first rabbit kills/bee kills, the run from San d'Oria/Bastok to Jueno, getting killed by a battering ram, Dlvling, the dunes, the ship, "Looking for party", your first linkshell, endgame, thiefs knife, kraken club, camping, HNMs, all the lolz at the camping zones, DRAMA, a online flirt. Take me back, if only for a day... Greetings from the Diabolos server. Quit back in 08/09

I could relate to so much of what you guys said. The pride you felt when people would immediately ask you to join their EXP party as soon as you logged online or the moment a piece of gear dropped to you that had a 5% chance to drop...so exhilarating. The good old days when Nyzul first came out or the time a Defending ring dropped when fighting king behemoth. Good times.

  • @Applesgosh

You guys reminiscing about the old FFXI is exactly how I reminisce about the old MapleStory. It was addicting, you needed dedicated friends if you wanted to run party quests (dungeons), rare drops were actually RARE (and you were praised if you had such gear), dying took so much hard earned exp (didn't de-level you, but still sucked compared to the tiny % you lose now), getting to lvl 30 took as long as it takes to get to lvl 130 nowadays, I could go on forever... Basically how it is nowadays is how Pete described how FFXI is nowadays.

A++ video. I was manager in a videogame store, and we had access to beta FF11 back then. Got addicted to the difficulty quickly, even thought i probably liked nothing about the game. The challenge of getting even small amount of gils (money), the unforgiving loss of xp if you "try", the almost impossible items to get, waking up, at 3 o'clock in the morning with some linkshell friends to camp "Malborger" (The malboro that gives the item 1/3 for monk's brown belt), being stuck at CoP early missions until they unlocked them at 99, etc. I've played almost all mmo's. When i meet ex linkshell members irl, they always have this special look in their eyes meaning "I know, i suffered too, but we were together".

  • @talsen6413

I think you could safely play the game again without getting sucked back in. The nostalgia will at max last a week. You'll be able to go through these old areas and see the sights and hear the music, but it will be deserted.
When I played more recently, it was sad seeing so few players. But in a way, I liked wondering through these areas by myself.
My more recent visit back to the game, the big memorable moment for me was visiting the area in the jungle near Temple of Uggalepih. I felt like I was walking through a memory. It was very surreal. But in that little visit, I was able to feel that immersion again. I just said to myself "I'm going to visit my favorite old areas and put this game to rest". For several days, I seriously just wondered around, occasionally hunting old favorite NM's, doing nothing but reminiscing about the time I played the game. I would recall wonderful memories of times with friends. The experience was enough to make it worth it to come back, but I didn't feel obligated to stay.

I've watched so many videos of people gushing over FF11 and talking about crazy experiences. Hearing these stories and seeing the excitement just light up people's faces, it has me fascinated with this game and wishing I played it in its golden years. I was an FF player back then, but was heavily invested in 10 & 10-2. (I had excess of 1000 hours concentrated into just 2 individual playthroughs, don't ask me how) Plus I was deeply opposed to subscription-based games/services (and still am for the most part). To this day, the grand total of my MMO experiences is a 10-day trial of WoW back in 2005. I played basically non-stop for those 10 days and then stopped cold forever. But hearing these stories about FF11 makes me want to get the game and play on the private Eden server in hopes of experiencing some of the magic I hear so many talk about.

Level 99 BST here. I loved that job so much. You could solo back before every job could solo. You could help diffuse mob trains back before they despawned. And you got to do your experience leveling in very unique places where most parties never get to explore. It was a terrific and challenging job. I played for years, and honestly Black Mage was my first main to 99, I also had Red Mage and Corsair and Samurai leveled up. And even though Black Mage was probably my favorite overall, I had such a great time and wonderful nostalgic memories playing BST. It's very close to my heart.

Bastok represent! When I first started playing FFXI way back at the original NA launch, I was completely focused on getting to Samurai, yet I had never played a MMORPG before in my life, so it took me months to get there. I remember my early Valkurm Dunes parties. None of the English speaking players had any advanced jobs yet, so all my parties were 4-5 warriors and a white mage. Sometimes 1 Black Mage if we were lucky. Those were such carefree days. I was working part time, still living at home, and spent all my free time every day sitting in front of my PC on FFXI. The funny thing about it is, back then I loved it so much, and I wouldn't have traded my time with the game for the world. But today, I could never play a game that hardcore again. I just don't have the time or the patience that FFXI demanded.
I mean, the time effort, and suffering that just getting my SAM AF body piece took alone was insane. It was a coffer chest in the Temple of Uggly (that's that I called it. The Tonberry infested temple). It took so many people helping me to work through that place, check every coffer spawn points, farm the Tonberry for keys to open all the doors just to explore the place to check for the coffer, and farm the key to open the actual coffer. We had to glitch open one specific door and that always caused many deaths, then we had to fight and re-fight the doll that guarded another one of the doors each time we passed through it. I had a level 75 Dragoon friend who was with me helping for 7 hours. She was 74 by the time I got my coffer open. And the hell of it is that the SAM AF body piece isn't even good. It had tank stats on it.

I wanted to shed some light on the tower/slime scenario you guys are talking about.
So there is Delkfutt's Tower, which at the top has a Gigas. And the Lvl 60 Gigas NM's on the top floors drop Bracelets (hand gear) which sold for near a million gil for a long time.
On the other hand, there is Ordelle's Caves in La Thiene Plateau. And they had a lot of stairs where slimes would spawn. The Slimes had a lot of RMT(bots) camping them for the Ring than can be crafted into a Snipers Ring. Those rings often sold for 500k to a million gil. It was basically the same price as a snipers ring since it was the main ingredient.
I'm not sure which of the two you are refering to when you are telling your story but the info im giving may help you remember and confirm the exact details.

And the guy who attacked the goblin smithy at the kazam zone and called for help so 30 of us lv26s got to gang beat some revenge out of it. It was glorious victory and we all cheered!

The Peacock Charm was from Argus (slime NM). That game was too emotional and great. The tough times made it worth conquering. I still remember complaining when they announced the patch to despawn zoned mobs. No more goblin trains on n00bs. RIP FFXI.

Dammit Johnny, I wish you played long enough to do COP before it got nerfed. I would have loved ur commentary on it. As hard as the regular game was back then, COP took the difficulty to ridiculous levels. To this day, I am so proud that I was able to pug the whole thing pre nerf. The music, the deaths , the victories have stayed with me to this day. I still get chills when I hear the promvyion , sacrarium or phomium aqueducts music. The feeling of elation the first time I saw sea or when I beat the final boss and got my Rajas ring. Damn what a great game!

Played FFXI for about 4 years, but I hated leveling, so I only got as far as getting my White Mage to level 64 I think. I tried a few different jobs but White Mage was it for me. Started off as a Warrior, but very early in the game I assumed that my friend who played a human was from Bastok. So I wanted to go surprise her by walking from Sand'oria to Bastok. I had no maps, I had no idea what I was doing. I ended up in the dunes, I found a boat, took it, and there I met someone that made it clear to me I wasn't going to Bastok...She was a white mage and helped me get to Windhurst where I'd be safe.
Turns out my human friend was from Windhurst anyway so that worked out great. That day I decided I would not go back to Sandoria till I was able to ride in on a chocobo (cuz at the time I thought that meant success). Eventually made it back to Sandoria, on my chocobo, I hated leveling but I loved helping people, so I used to spend most of my time just going around looking for people to raise or heal, I'd hang out in the dunes a lot healing people. Well, when I wasn't playing Taxi for people in Juno (had to make a living somehow).
I've been playing WoW for much longer now, but, I made real friends in FFXI, friends I still talk to, our linkshell was very fun. I've met a lot of interesting people on WoW but there isn't a single person that I'd consider a real friend, they've come, they've gone and I haven't cared, but our little FFXI group still keeps in touch. I hated so much about that game, yet it truly felt like I was that character.

My buddy and I created our accounts and characters on FF11 for the first time last night. We didn't get to play much and the controls are mega confusing, but I'm very excited to learn the ropes and finally get to play this!
This is a game I've always wanted to play since I was a kid. And I know I know, it's nothing compared to what it used to be, it can be solo'd now, I get it. But I would still love to try it, I still want to try and get what I csn out of it and see what roots are left of the first Final Fantasy MMO. And more than anything, I'm excited about the story! I know I've got hundreds of hours ahead of me, but my goal is to get through the entire story, expansions and all.

The game has obviously changed a ton since the glory days and the population is not what it used to. Still, the Asura server is usually fairly active. If anyone wants to jump back in, or try this game for the first time, I`d definitely recommend Asura.

There are plenty of people who play still. There are still around 100,000 players between all the servers.. Abyssea xp pt's don't exist anymore, and grinding to get job points feel like old xp pt's since you have to skillchain and magic bomb. to kill mobs fast enough. I came back to the game in April and have been loving it.

i played the game for maybe 3 months at release date for the PC version, and i was addicted to it like no other MMORPG. what made me quit was the wait time to get a party. i was a lvl20 paladin and i had to level up in that icy mountain area... qufim island? i waited more than 4 hours and just quit. i also played WoW for around the same time and in a way i wish i played more of both WoW and FFXI, because i never got to the end game of an MMORPG. i always had the thought in my mind that i can get the same sort of enjoyment out of something that is less time consuming.

Such an incredible game. Sadly I couldn't play as much as I wanted due to high school and parents but I was able to play in my college years when aht urgan came out. The game changed a little bit but wow what a fantastic era. I feel as if the game died down when WoG came out, changed too much. If only the core of the game lasted more than just a few years.
My fondest memory would probably getting the Moldavite earring drop after camping for hours against tons of competition. There were a few players in my LS that were extremely helpful and always did things for others.
Another memory would be beating the last of the zilart missions in sky. We had all of us BLM spamming thundaga III. It was so much fun. My sky linkshell was incredibly fun as well. It was friendly competition with the other LS too.
The best part about the game is how friendly the community was; constantly looking to help others. Games and people like that do NOT exist anymore

My friend and I still talk about this time where we tried to explore Pso'xja when it first came out. I mean, if you've ever played FFXI exploring any new area is pretty terrifying. You never know what aggros or how it aggros.
So we fall into this room with a chest in it, and I needed to reapply sneak and invis to me and my DRK friend. I start casting Sneak and all of a sudden i start getting destroyed by something. The chest in the middle of the room was a freaking Mimic that aggros casting.
I remember we were freaking out and screaming, and we tried so hard to kill it but we were quickly losing that battle. So in the end I decided to teleport us out. RIGHT as I finish casting and start to load out of the area, I watch as my DRK friend dies and falls to the ground as the screen fades to the black loading screen.
    Good times. :)

I was a Beastmaster! Started as a black mage, then a white mage into a beastmaster. I was playing with 2 of my brothers and one of their wives. I'd call them on my home phone then call the other so we could talk. But then when I became beastmaster I'd stop calling because I was too busy getting familiars and leveling up in insane areas! Lol sometimes they'd run into me in a party and I'd be alone and would type how cute a party. To my own brothers! I must have stopped around the same time as you because I don't remember puppet master either. Lol I remember my first day playing, I was sick of killing bunnies and worms and I ventured way out and started attacking an orc, I was a black mage level 3. Then a magic using orc showed up then 3 more! I was in their camp and someone must have previously wiped the area out. Man I remember running for what felt like an eternity. I had 20 of these guys on me. Then I see the gates to Sandonia, I think, and I zoned in SAFE! I was standing around 30 players and then a few seconds I just crumpled over dead. Not only that everyone at the time was pretty low level so I was responsible for like 15 deaths. Everyone was typing in all caps. I just slowly logged off afraid that they'd figure out it was me who rained death down on them.
