JT did you know yesterday was St. David's day (Patron saint of Wales people). So appropriate the you do a Welsh themed vid today. 😉
A day late
@@aliciamorris8631 but close enough for an American who wouldn't have known about it, but loves his Wales people. Right? 😉
I'll say this about wales:
There's a lot of water here. We're surrounded by sea on 3 sides, got the Severn river spliiting Wales from England for a good portion near the border.... and then there's streams/rivers/lakes everywhere. If not that, man made resovoirs.
Plus it rains a lot. Like anything coming from the Atlantic will fall here first usually. Not surprising there's a lot of legends revolving around water.
Plus the ancient Celts believed that bodies of water were gateways to the "otherworld". Lots of Pagan traditions in Europe had a similar belief. This is why so many burials/sacrifices from this time are in bodies of water and not soil. Makes sense that there is still lots of legends about rivers/lakes here. The lady of the lake is a classic one.

Thank you for checking out some Welsh stuff around our holiday! (it was on the 1st)
Cheers from Borth, Ceredigion!
Big up the Wales people! I lived in Wales with loads of Wales people about ten ish years ago. They're a great bunch and I looooove the accent
Welsh people :)
@@tomgroth9142 or First Nation British!
@@tomgroth9142 lol I know, but JT calls them "Wales people" and it's adorable
Thanks ciara❤️, you should visit the valleys in the summer it’s a bit run down due to the mines shutting but it’s beautiful and everyone’s so friendly😉❤️🏴
Yep thats probably the best place to find WELSH PEOPLE 🤦♂
The number of watery deaths may be connected to the Welsh weather ...Wales ain't quite a dessert 🏴
Bloke in the video confuses descendents with ancesteors
You should check out the "Mari Lwyd" - It's a strange but awesome Welsh Tradition. Basically, at Christmas a guy wears a really macabre horse costume with a real horses skull, and goes round knocking on peoples houses
A bunch of other drunk people join the horse skull as it travels round town... and here's the best bit:
They ask to come in to locals houses by all singing, then the owners have to sing a song back and deny them entry.
This goes back and forth for a while, and if the owners give up, then they all come in and eat all their food.
Like an extremely bizarre rap battle, with refreshments :S
F#*king love the Mari lwyd. It's so obscure and typically welsh. "I know boys, let's dress as a skeletal horse, in a bridal veil to score free food"
Did you know that the Welsh coast, in its entirety is considered to be the second best on the planet by National Geographic?!
Well, they got that wrong. Nowhere more lovelier,
Great video! Hello from Merthyr Tydfil in the South Wales Valleys 🏴
Diolch Yn Fawr (means Thank you very much) for the Welsh video, much appreciated, JT, us in Wales who watch you, love you too. It was Saint Davids day March 1st where we celebrate the day of our patron Saint, would love to see you maybe react to something about Saint David our patron saint JT. 🏴🏴👌 Btw loving your hair, gorgeous locks.👌
That tree @ 02:10..... did anyone else suddenly get an urge to stick a big pair of googly eyes to the trunk, or was it just me 😂
Everyone loves Their Wales 🏴 people 🏴🕊
To become a poet/bard in Cymru/Wales was incredibly difficult and brought with it both power and status. So I am not surprised myths grew up around this almost mystical position in our great culture of myth and story telling. At the Eisteddfod, a yearly Welsh gathering, the crowning and chairing of the Bard is still the most important event.
As a Welsh speaker this guy's pronunciation hurts.
As for the drowning aspect, the Britons are descended from the refugees from Doggerland before it sank beneath the North Sea so flooding and the sea is a source of nervy apprehension for us.
Cadair got me 😭😭😭😭
Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Hapus! Translation: Happy Saint David’s day! A few days late but none the less, a welsh video for our saints day:) also loved the queen popping up in the corner 🤣🤣 🏴
Drowning is a real risk here in Wales lol. We only have two seasons here: warm rain and cold rain.....and you have to decide for yourself which one it is.
Fancy seeing you here 🤣🤣
@@DarthLeland Been here a while lol.
@@DarthLeland What took you so long? :-D
You need to research the Skirrid Inn near me; it’s the most haunted pub in my country. 😀👍 from Wales. 🏴. Oh, it was St David’s Day yesterday.
Amazing pub but creepy
5:00 As a Welshman, if somebody yelled "Oi, you!" at me I'd be nervous. Ghost or not. It's never good to hear that phrase!
5:35 Got me bursting with laughter with that accent of yours
“WhAt tHe hEll”
At Sker House there’s a story that a lady was staying there and when she was walking upstairs to bed, she heard “something” behind her saying “why don’t you turn around and look at me”.
Hi from Carmarthen,The oldest town in wales
Gah, just a little bit pick, "afanc" is pronounced "avanc" (a single f in Welsh has a v sound, for an "f" sound it's the Welsh letter "ff")
Heck he mutilated all the Welsh pronunciation
Wales is famous for ghosts, demons and dragons. Heck the house I grew up in had several ghosts. One of my sister's friends while sleeping over had a freakout because of the "footsteps on the landing outside the bedroom"
And they didn't even touch on the ci Arawn (dogs of Arawn, the Welsh underworld much like the Greek Hades) these are spectural white dogs with eyes like fire that hunt the souls of the recently departed to drag them to the underworld, more so they are also know. To appear before people who are soon to die (though these dogs are often large black or red mastiffs who stare at those soon to die in silence)
Nice to see a Welsh reaction JT.
It was St David’s day yesterday 🏴
Now you've locked yourself in the room what will you do when the creature climbs out of your screen and tries to grab you???
Hi JT! The story about the flooding of Cardigan Bay has some basis in fact. in 2010 storms removed layers of sand from the beach there exposing loads of tree roots around 4,000 years old.
On Amroth beach are the remains of a prehistoric petrified forest.
There are a lot of nice ghosts in the UK too. I used to work in a shop where a friendly female ghost watched over us. One night, a man was looking in through the window as I was cashing up and I suspected he intended to rob the place. The woman appeared across the counter from me and watched him. I don't know if he saw her, but he left very quickly.
These stories are very good for the tourism industry but they have more to do with the consumption of vast amounts of alcohol.
I have regularly walked alongside the Taff at night, also the cemetery, never seen anything myself.
I've seen some weirdness but then, I'm in Newport.
Omg please react to Welsh words quiz. As a walesperson I'm curious
We live in Wrexham and we are right by judge Jeffries estate. It’s a lovely walk to go round now it’s a beautiful park x
Hope these spooky legends didn't put you off visiting your Wales people some day. Nothing so bad as a Welsh ghost! 👻
We do get very sudden rain in Wales and because of climate change it is happening more regularly and the land can get quite flooded. Some walking paths can be very slippery so it is not uncommon for people to fall in, although this usually affects tourists who do not know the paths well but it can happen to anyone if you are not cautious. There are hundreds of lakes and reservoirs without fencing which can be dangerous, cars have come off roads and fallen in which is my worst nightmare lol. The mountains and hills are obviously dangerous too as the weather can turn bad very quickly on high ground, a few people usually die from falling in the mountains every year.
The simple answer for all the water deaths and flooding’s etc was due to the fact that most people couldn’t swim in the 500-1000 years ago when most of these legends originate.
JT asks 'What's with all the drownings'.
JT doesn't know how much it rains in Wales. 🤣
It's the only place that I will drink the tap water, it's beautiful. One of the first things I do when I go to Wales is find a stream and have a drink of water. I know of at least one village that was drowned to supply water to somewhere in England. I'll resist the urge to make a comment.
@@iriscollins7583 Make sure that there's not a dead sheep upstream. (Happened to me once!)
Tap water on Exmoor, where I live, is very palatable.
@@jacketrussell Thanks for the warning.👍
The only place I've seen a dead sheep, was on Snake pass in Derbyshire.
AFANC is the Welsh for Beaver. WREXHAM football club (one of the oldest football clubs in the world)was bought last year by Ryan Renolds(Deadpool) and Rob MacHenley (Always Sunny in Philadelphia)
I am in Wrexham - and we call it Rectum as well - so don't worry about that!
What's that old joke? Wrexham? No, bloody destroys 'em. Don't remember the lead in.
I Know all about the Horrors in Wales. I used to have to visit my great aunt in Prestatyn MY GOD HER MOUSTANCE STILL GIVES ME NIGHTMARES!!! 🤣
What's a Moustance?
As always JT great video.
As I've said before, it's really nice to see your channel growing.
Do you have any idea as to what design you will be getting and where you will put it?
Thanks for checking out wales,Bridgend south wales, wales has some of the most beautiful scenery, there’s so much to do and we have come a long way for visitors to come and stay, people even open their houses for welsh meals, allot of Americans, Canadians, and so much more, the south like Cardiff is like any modern city, but yep massive gardens, castles, just a charming place to visit, with old arcades (where there small little streets under roofs, with two floors, everything is compact unlike allot of other cities and the rail system is great. Straight to London
I’m from RHONDDA VALLEYS, South Wales😉!! 1 night a man was driving over the mountain road on a motorbike and he saw a woman in a white dressing gown walking on her own in the winter so he picked her up thinking he was saving her and when he got to the bottom he went to ask where to drop her off and “she was gone”😳!! I Hate riding my electric motorcross down the dirt road if it’s dark👀lol!! Nice1 for doing a vid about Wales butt❤️👌🏴
When I was 15, i lived with my sister and her kids, I just put one of them to bed, when out the corner of my eye I saw something move in the mirror that was facing the bedroom door that lead out onto the landing, when I turned to look i saw a figure in a long cloak walking across the landing with no head, I ran screaming downstairs into the front room slamming the door behind me, I must admit I did leave my niece upstairs on her own, not far away there are remains of an old priory where monks lived that was built in 1160.👻
My Grandmother is buried in the Llandaff Cathedral Cemetary, bro walking past there late at night as a teen I sware I saw a Coven gathering, strange goings-on in some parts of Wales, but then again no stranger than The Wicker Man 😉
JT can you do a reaction to UK UFO sightings?
JT.... you need to sort your Barnet out!
Those castles in Wales were pretty much all built to keep the Welsh in Wales. It’s a beautiful country with a strong national pride. Known for its Rugby Union players and Singing. And Queen Elizabeth 2 made Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales. Love the vids. Cheers BP
Water was/is a prominent feature in Celtic beliefs just as it was/is in other ancient cultures.
Have a look at The Mabinogion a collection of Welsh folk tales.
My youth was mis-spent in South Wales, way too much town driving to spooky places scaring ourselves in the dark.
happy belated st David’s day, I remember walking backwards around st David’s church at midnight because of the devil legend. Hearing our male mates screaming when we spooked them was just golden 👌 🏴
Cadar Idris is the best climb. I went there last year, super beautiful.
I've slept on Cadair Idris a few times, wild camping is a lot of fun! I live near where the Afanc story comes from, there's a pool called the Beaver Pool in the river just up from the village Betws y Coed, one theory is the local beavers were being a pain by constantly blocking the villages water supply with their dams, and this led to the fairy tale of the Afanc being created, there are no beavers in Wales anymore but there used to be many years ago.
There's a pub called The Skirrid Inn (named after the mountain near it) which has a beam that has a groove in it from where supposidly Judge Jeffreys had people hung on. Good food too though!
2:18
Oh no
I know where one of those trees are
Everytime i go to that area i go inside the tree
I live in england so i think its ok
Nobody is safe.😱😱
The oak hasn't been fully removed from carmarthen to prevent the towns downfall. There is a large part plus root under where it stood and other peices spread out around South Wales ( well one piece is in Aberystwyth uni). And BTW the river always causes floods as its a tidal river at the edge of the estuary ( plus the town near the river was built on marsh land so when the weather is drowned rat rain and the tide is high ... well you can guess what happens 🤣.
I wonder if that's the inspiration for Vincent van Gogh's painting starry night. The tale of the guy who didn't close the floodgates??
Was half expecting to see something about the black nun in Llangrannog 🤣
I had a friend that went for an overnight camp somewhere near mount snowdon, i never heard from him after that but i just thought hey maybe he found new friends lol
I grew up on Anglesey. Spent my whole childhood swimming in the lakes of Snowdonia. It was a lot of fun scaring other kids on holiday here with stories of monster 😉
The Welsh word for Carmarthen is Caerfyrddin.
Caer Fyrddin translates to Merlins Fort ☺️
The remains of Merlins oak tree in Carmarthen - terrible pronunciation there - is in Carmarthen museum at the old bishops palace out in Abergwili.
My cat was run over and killed. That night I took a couple of pictures out my window, and in one of them it looks like a ghost cat standing up and staring at my bedroom window (it was a mist but had cat features when you look closely). I thought it was something on my phone camera, but took another picture straight after at the same spot and there was nothing there
My cats always hung around for a while until the new cats had learnt their job.
7:50 also the setting for the game maid of sker by team wales
You can hear the bells ringing under water in cantre gwaelod
Hi JT great video about the Welsh Urban Legend’s, but I have a question. When are you Anna going to do a reaction video together again?
Hair cut. - very early nineties "Dave Beckham" look. Curtains!!!!
You're defo my favourite American!!
We are shook! Not by this video but by the one AdventureShawn posted the other day about the new Greggs Drive thru. Loads of us in the UK don't know about these yet so do a react quickly JT. It's the greggs react we've been waiting for!
Ha, love a Greggs, didn't know they did Drive thru though. Where? Do they have special food for Wales people?
Gregg's drive through in St Clears, absolutely awesome, sausage roll and mediocre coffee from your car seat.
Another great reaction...made even better by the release of the crowning glory that is your hair. Not so sure bout the centre parting but it looks so thick and healthy, don't keep it covered up all the time 😁
Yeah are people gonna start calling for a British themed haircut instead of a tattoo?
Sker house is in Porthcawl can see it from where my mom lives and she always told me stories about this place..
wow, your hair reminds me of Johnny Depps hair. love it. oh and yeah I live in wales
I stayed at an hotel in Conway and was slapped in the back of my head .... nobody was in the room , true !
Loving the hair! 😂
love a bit of lurkey burkey, geat entertainer .
great video dude
Loving the tartan trews (trousers) JT
I mean a lot of lakes, maybe some muddy areas and orignally the Northwest Euroepan hemisphere was supposed to be frequently rainy and wet so that makes sense.
Happy St David's day! 🏴💖 (well for yesterday!) 😘
It's WALES! It's easy to predict rainfall as it never stops!!
For some reason JT I can imagine you squealing on a ghost tour lol 😂
Greetings from N. Wales!
Dude, I've not seen a fanny part like that since the early 90s in madchester. Mad for it our kid.
Thumbs up if you know what I mean.
The scariest part of these creatures is the spelling of there name
Scary as the spelling of their.
I thought the Afanc was a creature made up for the TV show Merlin. I didn't know it was an actual mythical legend.
The Afanc is mentioned in George Borrows’ book “Wild Wales”, which was written at the start of the steam age.
Cadre idris. Is on my bucket list of places to go... I struggle walking but I wanna walk up there....
Also the sleeping on the mountin only happens if you sleep alone.
I did not know about number 1! I walk down that path to go to university!
JT In Wales we have a hell of a lot of rain that why we have flooding and drowning and water related shenanigans peace ✌️
mate you are a razor blade away from the Ultimate Peaky Blinders haircut! Try it....you might like it!
Yes!!!
You have glorious hair dude. Show that off for sure.
That Danny guy is pronouncing all the Welsh words wrongly. If you are going to do a video about Wales at least learn to pronounce the words correctly. He might as well have called Wrexham rectum because that’s how close he was to pronouncing the rest of the Welsh names and Town. Carmarthen is pronounced Car-Mar-then, not Car-math-un. There’s a poem about the oak that goes “ If Merlins oak shall tumble down, then shall drown Carmarthen Town”. The rotting oak was finally removed in 1978 and Carmarthen suffered the worst floods in its history ( which is a long history as it’s a Roman Town). However the town is still standing and it’s my local town, and it’s approach to the town is stunning to look at with its imposing County Hall and castle. Worth a Google to see the view of the town from the river. Thank you for showing it JT 💕
I live in Carmarthen near where that tree was
As someone from Wrexham, i agree :D
Big big fan of the Wales people 👍
And you America people too !
There is a lot of water here in Wales 🏴
Snowdon. Incredible. Try the Lakes and Peaks in England. Scotland - take your pick. I am off to Ireland this year to tour the country, so I will let you know, but Donegal looks lovely.
The entirety of the Coast of Wales is considered to be the second best on the planet by National Geographic.
Diolch, Having myself spent the night up in the bothy on cadair I can confirm you will go mad if you spend the night
A shame it was not posted yesterday.
It's Wales. It hardly ever stops raining in Wales.
Look up the story of Beddgelert, it'll make a good video.
Heyy, can u do a Saint David's day ( in Wales) plz 😏😏
When people say Wales is beautiful I look out my window and think not where I live
I only live 15 miles away from Wrexham .
The Moutnain being Giants is a good possibilltiy that came from the Scandinavian they have whole "how the world was created" theory in their ancient faith with similliar belifes.
11:58 Not sure if you're aware of this JT, but there's a funny old woman in your house.
Looooool Merlins oak hehehe. Which novella did they like so much that they believed ?? Was it Malory, Troyes or Monmouth :D :D :D Not sure which of these authors first came up with that one, but it is funny as heck. (Malory wrote Le Morte D'Arthur around 1460 AD, or thereabouts, Troyes wrote his Perceval Ou le Conte de Graal sometime between 1180 and 1190 AD, Monmouth's "Historia Regum Britanniae" which is a later name for the book, as it was called "De gestis Britonum" around 1136 AD or thereabouts.) Seeing that Arthur was a Roman soldier, and the Roman Empire ceased to exist between 400 and 412 AD (resources are not always clear on the date, a bit of some say x others y), it seems a bit far fetched that either resource is reliable, specifically considering Merlin is the latest amalgamation of at least 2 figures that may or may not have been around at the exact same time as Arthur did, and of which we are not sure either of those people ever met Arthur to begin with.
So, I'd say do some research before believing in Hoax stories. Never forget, the best trick the devil ever played was making people believe he did not exist.
This guy butchered every pronunciation so confidently. Bloody English. I've slept on Cader Idris before, although I've only ever heard the thing about madmen and poets about Carn Ingli (which means mountain of angels) in North Pembrokeshire. Suffice to say, I'm a little mad, and like to wax poetic; although I'm not dead yet as far as I can tell. The folklore I've heard about Cader is that it was the seat of a giant called Idris.
Edit: There's a great episode of 'Hinterland' (there's also a Welsh-language version called 'Y Gwyll') set at Devil's Bridge. It might actually be episode 1. It's a really grim detective programme set around Aberystwyth in West Wales, quite similar to 'The Killing' or 'The Bridge', if you're into Scandi Noir.
I live in wales btw and this shocked me
