The Benyar BY-5177. Does this £38 watch paying strong homage to the Rolex Explorer deserve your hard-earned money? If you only have a tiny budget for a watch of this type, is this going to be decent enough for the money, or can you achieve better for a bit more money? You better watch this video to find out!

The reason why it's such a chunky boy is because of the movement. It's based on the Chinese Standard Movement (CSM, it's usually called Chinese Unified Movement but I'm just not a fan of calling it CUM). The quality of those varies wildly depending on the manufacturer, but they usually have two specific issues, being very thick (pushing the case size to 14 or 15mm) and weak automatic winding. That's something I can live with though.
The unacceptable part is the fact (as Honest Watch reviews found out) that it's chrome plated zinc-alloy (unknown composition aka mystery metal), even though they write All Stainless Steel (okay, it's actually sainless steel, lol) on the back, into the description and I even asked them and they told me it's steel. That's just a no-go, I unfortunately already ordered it, if I get a third or even half of the 32€ back in the dispute I'll open I can say this was worth it.
Honest watch reviews covered this recently and discovered the watch is plated and not solid stainless steel as Benyar are actually claiming. Naughty naughty.

Dude, what do expect from the Chinese?
I own this watch among several other chinese watches (mostly Pagani Design and Cadisen). This watch is the odd one out. The movement does not at all wind automatically. You have to wind it by hand every day or it will stop on you while on the wrist. It loses about 2 minutes per *day* and it is not made of stainless steel as claimed by Benyar. All my other chinese watches are great timepieces and can easily compete or outperform most of the Seikos in my collection. Beware of Benyar though. Will never buy another Benyar. The only thing positive about this watch is that it looks nice.
I raised the issue of the fact it isn't made of stainless, or even sainless, steel with aliexpress who agreed to refund it if I send it back to a UK address. It might be cheap, but it's still crap and advertised dishonestly.
I believe next year Rolex will update the explorer 1 to this size, essentially make it a homage to Rolex honage.
Your conclusion is right, the scratched glass is inexcusable. At that price, it would be better for them to spend more on the watch and forget providing a bracelet. I just got an Amphibia 670 for Christmas with a decent rubber strap, delivered it was £55 and I am proud to wear it 👍
I have this on order. Looks great, absolutely gutted it's not stainless steel though, going to make for an interesting review.
Love my Benyar 5177, it's beautiful, confortable on the wrist and keeps good time. I wear it most of the time, while my Speedmaster stays at home.
I’ve had three of the Sports Chrono’ models from Benyar, one for me, and one each for my sons. We are very happy with them. I think after watching this review, although a nice watch, the Chrono models are a step up.

I guess you can't expect much for the money but it's always disappointing for things not to be as good as you would hope. @watch me with watches; do you know if the PD-1661 and PD-1639 have the same dial diameters? I know the cases are 40mm and 43mm; but both use the NH35A so I am thinking they will use the same diameter dials. Thanks.
I'm not sure, I don't have the 43mm version anymore to measure the dial.
@@watchmewithwatches Thanks for replying. I have modded my PD-1661 into a 5517 Milsub homage; but fancy the blue sunburst dial from a PD-1639 you see. I think they use the same 28.5mm Seiko dial diameter on the NH35A in both the 40mm and 43mm cases. Keep up the good work on your channel. I really enjoyed your Pagani Design mods videos. Regards.

Got a 40mm case with sapphire crystal, 20mm lug width for £23 from Miuksi on Ali. Then used a mingzhu movement, hands and dial from a basic Corgeut sub homage (on nato strap) that I picked up cheap (~£15) from ebay. Used the bracelet from a Loreo but nearly any will work due to 20mm lugs. Could use a Pagani bracelet or similar for ~£10 on Ali. Total cost was around the same as this with not much work, 1hr tops, and the result is great. Good accuracy and case spec, hacks and has date too. Could swap to a different dial and handset relatively easily to change up the look, parts for mingzhus are plentiful and cheap. Better option than this for me!
So many 21mm lug watches nowadays that there are a lot more strap options than I thought.

Thoroughly accurate review. Much better than other reviews of this same watch.
Fully polished case and the uneven surface is a giveaway to the material used. Chrome plated brass or worse yet zinc case. Same as many watches both years ago and today. Timex comes to mind.
As you say, Cadison is the value leader at this price.
Just bought one of these, I know it’s always a risk especially with the lower quality automatics but I hope it will come with no issues. The watch looks nice though in my opinion.

I have the blue and the white dial in this watch. It’s in no way perfect but for the money. I paid £25 I’m more than happy with mine for a bit of a change
Benyar Homage off the Panerai looks interesting and some of the reviews aren't half bad. Something I'm considering.
However it's almost twice as expensive if purchased from Amazon.

Notwithstanding the sellers/manufacturers outright dishonesty/fraud this watch is of the quality that knock off Chinese watches in Turkish bazaars were back in the eighties. I think we have all moved on a bit since then. Vile.

I don't know whether you've seen my review of these mate, but I found out that the case isn't stainless steel.
Credit to you for stating this in your review. I discussed this in my own review. The case is made from zinc alloy which is nickel plated to look like stainless steel. The misspelling of stainless on the caseback as "sainless" is embarrassing. I am surprised that to date I am the only watch reviewer to have mentioned this error. Regards.
@@watchreviews4k I actually didn't even notice the misprint until after the review. Perhaps they did it on purpose so people can't complain it's not stainless steel. As technically it doesn't say it is 😆
@@HonestWatchReviewsHWR They also misspelled it on their Milgauss homage. Ironically stainless is spelled correctly on the inside of the clasp. Pagani Design, Bersigar, and Benyar, are all made by the same factory so it is strange they made the mistake on the Benyar casebacks, but not the other brands. Embarrassingly they are also using pictures of the misspelled caseback on Aliexpress to advertise the mistake. One would think they would have photoshopped the mistake. Regards.

Paid £33 for their Panerai homage and its s great watch. Sure it's not quality the movement feels like a bag of spinners but it keeps good time, looks and fits great too.
I'm sure they make good watches in the mix. Cadisen have some great and some terrible watches, as do starking. This one is bad because it fails on so many levels including spelling mistakes and lies about materials made from. Unacceptable.
I too love lizard grain boxes.
This is the horological equivalent of costume jewellery.
The scratch on the glass, out of the box, just proves what I already thought Benyars would be when I saw them listed on Ali (complete pieces o.s.).
The verdict 'waste of money' probably hits the nail on the head. I've been completely non-plussed by some of the Bligers and Corgeuts I've bought. They usually come with a few problems. I found out it's much better to wait or stretch the budget to Steeldive, San Martin, et al. Phylida seems to be doing good things, as well. I find that Pagani's aren't really all they're cracked up to be either. I had to open the see through case-back and dab off the oil spots from the NH35 (Whoop-de-doo) movement with a bit of Bergeon putty stuck on to a pencil.
It's still a valuable video for reference, though and I am still weirdly tempted to add a Benyar to my basket as a gamble. A bit like a(n) (un)lucky dip. To see what a turd I receive.
I think the watch is not worth the money.

These Aliexpress brands are really missing a trick with no one doing a half decent explorer style watch. Chrome plated case, unknown movement, poor case shape, such a wasted opportunity. It's so easy to get 101 homage dive watches, time they sorted it out with this style of watch

I have a benyar they stated its stainless steel its not its alloy they emailed me was tempted to send back but kept it there customer service is terrible there of my list to buy from
Are you aware you are supposed to touch the metal triangle on the back of the Diamond Selector with your finger while testing? The watch itself is so cheap and definitely worth the money so there is no point in criticizing it's proportions being slightly off or it's specs, it's just not worth buying it. And you can expect the watch being undamaged out of the box, you are right about that. Cheers mate 👍

I think it's great that you're doing reviews of these ultra cheap watches, we can get a good idea of it's worth. I also think this Benyar's hands, eg. minute hand is a tad too short; proportions are not very pleasing. Waiting for your (next) comparison video to see what 20 pounds more can get us 👍

Cadisen c1032, Starking AM0184, Pagani Design chronograph, phylida explorer homage, timex expedition camper, casio f91w, escapement time King seiko homage, corgeut railmaster homage.
All the auto watches (and the quartz to be honest) suggested only cost a bit more but are significantly better. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.

Mine has no scratches, is very quiet and fits right and snugly on my wrist. Also says STAINLESS on the back.
I got the white faced one....I think it's a fine watch. Considering adding the blue variant. Bloody Ali Express watches😂
Better save up a little, and buy an Alpha Explorer 36mm.

If someone want a Chinese made homage, the SanMartin is a better choice.
The dial is a soft thin sheet of plastic that you can see at the beginning of this video is pinched in where the indexes are fixed. Utter crap.
