If you use NH4NO3 it’s a lot easier to stir, you can also use a bigger excess of H2SO4 to make it easier to stir if KNO3 is all you have. Another option is to mix your acid and nitrate and chill it in the freezer until the sulfate/bisulfate crystalizes out and decant your mixed acid into another beaker.

Brother just use the sulfuric and KNO3 to make nitric acid and then use the mixed acid method. All you need is a retort to start. Ive done both and mixed acids is worth the wait. Way better yields, better quality, no hotspots and you can actually stir it. Good job though 👍 😁

Erythritol is finely ground and added in small portions and mixed well, the temperature during nitration should not exceed 20 °C. After adding all the erythritol, the mixture will become quite thick, nitrate at room temperature no higher than 30 °C for another 30 minutes and then pour into water.

But I’ve noticed many more people using urea instead of bicarbonate now, Is there a reason? I think I saw something mentioned is SM but sadly I lost the thread.
@Polkem1 look up the channel "dug", it's a guy Dugan Ashley, he has a nice ETN breakdown in a 2 part series. If your familiar with etn, skip to part 2 (which is the actual synthesis video). Sodium bicarb is used to surface neutralize but urea is used during recrystallization to absorb the remaining acid so it can't recontaminate the etn.
@@Polkem1 you need to wash ETN significantly more than other stuff and use an scavenger like urea in the recrystallization water. When you think it's good, do it one more time. If you don't wash it enough it will start to turn yellow and decompose. This can take a month or two or a year, it depends on how much acid is left in it that determines the decomposition speed. If this happens you can just dissolve it in your solvent of choice and recrystallize it and it will be fine again. I had this happen after it was sitting for a year and I just recrystallized it and it's good as new.

It make potassiumhydrogensulfate and HNO3. potassiumsulfat alone works only if you destill it at higher temperature 150C. But than there are lots of NOX inside your nitric acid the KHSO4 destillation yields the good one. Thats why Woolwich arsenal hat 1910 around 150 tons of sodiumhydrogensulfate per week as an waste product thats the sold as draincleaner or recover H2SO4 from it.(Historical note)

Very badly done video on such dangerous product. It is 33 percent more sensitive than PETN and your instructions are missing. First you wrote Sulfuric Acid, and then you added white powder without writting anything. Some will know it's nitrate salt probably. Some not. Etc. Badly done video. Why do it so bad. Make sure to wash your ETN many times, I do mine at Least twice, or 3 times. Still have 1g stored from 7 months ago, and it perfect conditions.
this is not enough, recrystallization in acetone with dissolution in water and urea is needed.
