Croydon is a neighbourhood in the inner west of Sydney. Located 9 km ( 6 miles) from the Sydney CBD. It is bordered by the Suburbs of Burwood , Ashfield and Five dock. The Traditional owners of the area are the Wangal people of the Eora nation. The area was once heavily wooded with Gum trees and other species. The first land grant in Croydon area was to Captain John Towson In April 1793. Other grants were to soon follow. Between 1800 and 1860 the land was cleared of forest to use for orchards and grazing land. Croydon was named after a suburb in London - England.
