Heylewcanfixit.. I took a chance and emailed rapala and they responded very promptly, just like you did... I sent them a few pics and serial number and the said my model is 2003.and they didn't install the compression valve button until 2004 to 2007... they said I didn't work as good as they intended, that the models without the release are actually a better performer. But I sure appreciate your video about that model and maintenance... it's the only one I could find.thanks again

Your coworker needs a set of new blades. The ice shaving was horrible and it took forever to cut that hole.
I used to have an old auger like that till the piston fried after 10 years. The new strikermaster solo is where it is at with gas augers. Best power and speed - no more gas tank venting either.

Couldn't swap in the wind paddle even if I wanted to. I replaced the original throttle spring with a slightly larger and stiffer one from my junk drawers and that did the trick.

So could that cracked plastic gas intake been the only problem? I just looked at my auger as it won’t run and gas was leaking and sure as heck that intake was cracked. Wondering if I replace that it would be good to go without changing the whole carb? Thanks for sharing!

Hey Lew, After reading below what do you think about me cutting off that air vane? I thought I had a bad spring that wouldn't allow the valve to stay wide open. While running, the valve opens only a quarter. I removed the cracked fuel line nipple and attached the hose direct to the metal nipple underneath. It runds great but doesn't have much speed so that is why I would like to cut off the air vane. I didn't know what the purpose of that thing was till i read someoenes comment below. Thanks for the Vid.

Hey Jeff, you can cut it off,
but by doing that the engine will run faster than it was meant to be. So there are some pros and cons.
      Thanks for the message!

Hey Lew! Curious why you discarded the air vane. I’ve replaced my carb and reinstalled it and it doesn’t run as good as I was expecting. I can tell in the video you were talking about the air vane but the music was dubbed over whatever you were saying.

    • @LEWCANFIXIT

Kyle, I Decided not to install it because it only serves one purpose, it will only let you rev the engine to a specific RPM, by removing it, I can get more RPMS from the engine.

I swapped the same carb onto the same auger and the screw on the vane or whatever’s it’s called the spring hooks onto is rubbing on the motor plastic once the gas tank and it won’t open the carb up

Hey lew!! Just wondering if u could answer me one... I turned my auger on. And it cut one hole but ended up spitting black and green gunk out pretty religiously... Was just wondering if it's fixable or hatched...

What year is that model? It looks like the exact same one I have with the plastic handles and everything else except mine does not have that valve release switch. and I was just wondering about that. I haven't switched out the carb yet... But I might... I just disconnected it and sprayed it down good with carb cleaner and the filter too and changed plug and used amsoil saber oil and it started right up after sitting for 3 years.. I like it but can you tell me how to tell what year it is? Thanks.

    • @LEWCANFIXIT
      @LEWCANFIXIT  3 роки тому

David I am not sure on the one I fixed for my co-worker. but I did find this info from Tecumseh:
The DOM (Date of Manufacture) or Serial Number indicate the date the engine was produced. The first digit (5) is the year in
the decade (1995). The next three digits (114) indicate the build date (114th day of the year or April 24). The letter designation
indicates the line or shift on which the engine was built at the factory
      thanks for watching!

Doesn't look like anything is broken off... Right under the spark plug on the metal body housing, where the valve should be, there are two holes on the block... One on each side under the plug... I looked in the holes with a flashlight and did not see anything broken or see and threads to screw anything in there... But every picture I see of the auger shows that yellow button... it's not that it doesn't work well without it, I guess I'm just wondering if this model didn't come with one....or what?? So I got the carburetor, you recommended and have a follow up question. At about 7:30 in the video when reattaching the spring that controls the throttle. When you push the throttle and it opens up all the way the you release the throttle lever on the handle, should that close back all the way up? I used the same spring that was used with the other carburetor and it doesn’t seem to be working well.
