  • Get a good voice-over sound using only the included effects found in Adobe Audition, including EQ, Dynamics, and the DeEsser.
    One of my clients requested a custom processing chain but only wanted to use the plugins that come with Adobe Audition. Is it possible to get a good sound without using 3rd party plugins? I say absolutely! This video illustrates how I get a produced voice-over sound using only Adobe Audition’s stock plugins. Listen to the difference between this unprocessed voice-over sound and the processed voice-over sound.

    About Lenny:
    Audio engineer, producer, marketing specialist, and radio broadcast professional in Southern California.
    A custom processing preset by Lenny B for voice-over is a series of plugins explicitly tuned for your voice, in your room, and on your microphone. To compete in today's voice-over world, you must ensure that your demos and auditions are extraordinary. Voice-over artists at every experience level from all over the world are fighting to win work. However, if you don't have a professional sound, you will lose out to someone who does. Custom voice-over processing can take your audio presentation quality to the level necessary to compete with the pros. Instead of taking it upon yourself to tweak the parameters like EQ compression, DeEssing, and saturation, you can hire a professional voice-over audio engineer to create it for you. Once you have the custom preset on your system, you have "The Sound" every time you press the record button.

    Great video Lenny. This is really timely for those situations where you have to hand off a project or go between multiple machines that may not have identical plugins. Question for you about the chain you built: did you consider using the multi-band compressor in place of the dynamics plugin? Love more detail on that decision making process. Happy Memorial Day!!

      @HeyLennyB  3 роки тому

      Hi Ray, the multi-band is great too. I just wanted to try and keep it somewhat simple. But I find myself using a Multiband compressor more and more. Thanks for watching!

    Great video, but too advanced for me. I was looking for quick settings in Audition to process voice overs.

    I love your channel and the awesome content you put out! Have been using Reaper for a couple of years now, how does it compare to Audition for work flow, etc? I have Audition but I’m having trouble with the learning curve. Is it worth learning because it’s the “VO industry standard”, or do you feel I’m good with Reaper?

      Hi Great Scott! Voice Media. In my opinion, most of the paid DAWs are all the same, it's just that the buttons are in a different place. I say, if you are comfortable with Reaper, you're good there. With reference to this video however, Reaper's stock plugins don't really cut it for processing. But, you can absolutely load 3rd party plugins into Reaper. Many of my clients use Waves plugins (and others) to modify the audio. I hope that helps you. If you're comfortable with Reaper, skip the learning curve continue using it. That's my suggestion.

    • @dobbatron
      @dobbatron 3 роки тому

      I literally don't know Reaper's plugins at all other than to say a plain-looking interface can have the same 1s and 0s underneath, only question is do you like using it and did it get the job you want done?
      I agree with Lenny that most daws are pretty similar tbh and all have a learning curve. Thankfully with voice work our needs are fairly basic and once you have things set up you should save that and use it as a template to use in future.
      Booth Junkie has some great Reaper setup video on his channel.
      Other than that I always find the best way to power up the daw curve is a small project where I push through and research the bits i need along the way to some kind of finished output.
      How do I setup a record channel? (Search then do it)
      How do I check levels? (Search then do it)
      Etc
      Etc
      Once you have all the bits in place and working you can repeat and start looking for key commands etc to make things even faster.

    Can you please show us how to mix and master audio with music in Adobe Audition? Like after you add all the effects to your audio and then switch over to multitrack and drag in your music and adjust the volumes… what do you do then to make the audio and music sound cohesive and pro quality? Thank you in advance.

    Is the ratio of compression better at 4 or 2. I don't want too much of a compression sound. Just kinda lightly you know. Thanks love your help. Learned alot

    • @HeyLennyB
      @HeyLennyB  4 місяці тому

      @brettcollin3693, that's a great question. In general, for voice applications, I'd say around 1.5:1 would be a light compression ratio, and around 4:1 might be a heavy compression ratio. However, you have to consider other variables, like the style of compression (Opto, VCA, FET) and the threshold, attack, release, and even mix settings. For example, you might use a 4:1 heavy ratio with a VCA compression set with a high threshold and slow attack and release that would yield a light compression sound. Learning what each setting adjustment does to the sound is a good place to start. Compression is a very diverse audio tool that can be used in different ways. I suggest playing with a compressor by trying all the different settings on your voice or even a music track you are familiar with. I hope to have my Beginning Compression For Voice-Over training course completed soon. Thanks for watching!

    You said the output levels should be the same even after processing? But don't you think we need atleast as loud as hitting -3dB and using compressor and limiter will do the job. EQ is definitely for cleaning mud and bad frequencies but when it comes to overall loudness of the audio it should be sounding more clear and loud after processing. Let me know whats your point on this?

      Yes, the final audio I send out is much louder. However, loudness (getting a file loud) happens in a separate production stage called Mastering, after processing. It must be done separately. You can learn more about here www.lennyb.com/blog?tag=mastering
