This is my second favorite anime of Winter 23. My fav is obviously gushing over magical girls. Nothing beats Utena Hiiragi ;)

Things to know: 1.This anime is based in china 2. The servant was the one that threw away the message 3.The house of women at the beginning are courtesans (like geishas) that the most prettiest entertain you or accompany you and wait to be sold later on and married as a concubine or luckily a main wife....

Technically it’s not China but a fictional country heavily based on China. That lets it get away with some historical inaccuracies.

4:55 she's not a slave, closer to an indentured servant. she was sold off to the rear palace for money, she has a contract for a certain amount of years of labor after which she gets to leave

Not knowing court etiquette might make somethings confusing. A lady in waiting is basically a direct servant under a woman of status. A modern version would be a personal assistant. If I had to make a well known male equivalent it'd be like a knight's squire. Ladies in waiting though not always are usually a family member like a cousin or sister, or taken from vassals other nobles below them. Basically you'd send your "extra" daughters for a variety of political benefits.

Just a useful thing to know. Technically speaking, Maomao is not a slave even if it's a weird gray area. In ancient China, servants had contracts that their employers would buy. Usually from the servant or their family (which is why it's a weird gray area because technically it's her kidnappers getting paid in this case and not her or her father).
Some servants, especially long-term personal ones could be life contracts which is VERY similar to slavery as the servant can't get out of it unless they are fired. More often, they were just killed instead because a servant with a life contract would be trusted with more sensitive information. This is NOT Maomao's situation. She said she just had to work for two years meaning that the contract that the palace bought from her kidnappers was a two-year servant's contract. Basically, she can't leave the palace (because no one could) but only for two years. Once her contract is up, she will be free to go home.

I live in Japan and if youre wondering how famous this anime is... its way more famous than you probably think, more famous than in america and other countries. Everytime I go to a cosplay event, all of them are basically cosplaying this (and blue lock, mashle, and haikyuu) SOOOO famous, they are even more copslayers than frieren and jujutsu kaisen which are probably more known worldwide than in japan

This was another title I went in blind. By far, one of my favorite new anime’s for this season.

oh hell yes :) oh and about the "whitening effect" in asia it is the believe that you are more beautiful if your skin is white, it was the believe in england, too but the "make-up" was heavy in arsenic or lead one of the two and it poisoned you.
and yes the prince is more important because a princess "can't" become the emperor

    Yaaay, the apothecary diaries!!! 🥳
This anime is really really worth watching! 😊 i started watching this after JJK and was a bit confused about how different this anime is, so the contrast was very high ^^ but how things develop around Maomao is really good and you will loooove the dynamics between the characters :)
One of the most valuable questions for this anime is: who is observing who? :)
I definitely wish you a loooot of fun with this anime!! 😊

Emperors in the East used to have multiple wives or "Concubines" in the effort of having multiple childern (is always good to have spares in case anything happens).
The "Main Concubines" are the ones that may sire the next Emperor, while the lower ranking ones are there either due to their status (are doughters of powerful people, and being in that position is beneficial), spares if something were to happen to a Main one, or simply because the Emperor took a liking of them...
If one of the Main Concubines does give birth to a boy that survives childehood, then she is for sure to go up in the internal ranking. As in England, is up to the Emperor to decided to make her an Empress/something akin to it, or not, and just give her privileges.

Going to be a few almost referee moments with this series, visits back to the Verdigris House (high end brothel) lots of brain fever trying to work out the puzzles Maomao is dealing with and humorous misunderstandings constantly.

They released the first three episodes all at the same time... and after episode 3 I was absolutely hooked. It's also become one of my favorite novel series. Frieren might have been my favorite anime of Fall '23/Spring '24, but Maomao was my favorite female character over that time span... and voiced by my favorite sayuu: Aoi Yuki.

Welcome Gaz to CSI China × GoT.... hilarity ensues.
The "Kidnappers" are basically an Aggressive Employment Agency that procure laborers and get them contracted into service, NOT with a 1-time fee, but with an ONGOING COMMISSION cut off the top of an employee's wages for the duration of the Contracted term (or life, whichever ends first).
Concubines are all "not yet wives" on hand for Lineage and political leverage purposes. Remember that their "Ranking" is subject to both the whims/interest of the Emperor, and who bears SONS for Succession. (this is a "Not-China" setting, so these are just the facts).
The Courtesans of the Pleasure district Maomao used to operate with were the classic "All Purpose Entertainers, Artists, Idols" with the FULL SPECTRUM of services to entertain customers, up to but not necessarily always including "the oldest profession".
Maomao is initially Shanghai'd and indentured as a Rear Palace servant girl.
For the most part after the credits are just a "Next Time" teaser, except for the E12 after credit where they set up the couer break.
