    It's still a good keying mechanism. Disc detainer vs. pins, types, and side pins, and gates, is a lengthy discussion. One defeat of disc system is Kwi---t: an uncut key with good torque applied will tear right through the discs; the same would be true, probably, of any key material stronger than the discs.

      Yes, in the real world a destructive attack is way more likely. I think maybe 10 or so people have picked Protec now, but picking is not really a practical real world approach to opening one of these. Too hard, too slow

    Great explanation of the technique you use! If you modified the first profile disk to be free spinning (which I think would still allow the lock to be operated with the original key), how could you tension the lock then? With protec2 you can use the interactive element bearing balls to catch the core but this doesn't have such parts.

    • @crispix
      @crispix  Рік тому +2

      Not a stupid question.
      The chance of a lock like this being picked in use is basically zero. It is really hard to pick, and requires highly specialised tools and skills. Picking is generally unreliable, and the pick I filmed here took several hours of practice on this one lock.
      Unless you are trying to keep out a government agency with a reason to want covert entry, by far and away the most likely attack is destructive.

      Yes, you are quite right and I explicitly say exactly this in the video. A blind pick is definitely possible (I do get actionable feedback picking like this), but undoubtedly harder, and the awkwardness that would come with picking in situ would add further difficulty. Overall I would say that picking like this is definitely possible but not very practical, these are very hard indeed to pick.

    Hello everyone, i would like to hear your opinion about somethimg.
    i am concerned about design of abloy protec 2's sidebar. I own 358 and when i checked the core i noticed that sidebar is very thin. Also, 90% of sidrbar wasnt even spported by solid brass. Mostly disk spacers were holding it in place. After couple years of rusting, already thin sidebar may additionaly deteriate and weaken.
    I am afraid that this (in my opinion) weak design makes it suspectible to torquing-the-core attack (someone could put flathead scrwdiver bit in wrench and start torquing the lock until it or bit brakes).
    I am really concerned and would really appreciate hearing your opinions.
    Thank you for your time.
    P.S. sorry for grammar, i am not native speaker.

    • @crispix

      Well corrosion won't be a problem, Abloy material selection very good. I suspect if you tried to force it you'd break the anti rotation tab off the front of the DC and mash the insides of disc 4 and 11 where the DC interacts with them. This would make the lock unusable but not open. If you get the chance to try it I would be very interested in the results!
