    You FT3DR videos are very helpful. Especially for a rookie from north of the border, thank you, VE7PJG.

    Thanks for the great video. I like the approach you took for programming in various frequencies in that order. I've been playing around with a few different ways but I think I might try this one. I've only had my FT3DR for a few weeks and hadn't come across the club mode yet, but I think that's a great feature. Off to watch your Yaesu FT3DR Introduction video now. :)

    Something that I found out is that if you want to use VFO-B for non-APRS functions, you have to disable the APRS modem. The A12 that is flashing means that VFO-B is currently dedicated to APRS 1200 baud. The radio will not allow you to transmit on VFO-B, and if you have APRS Mute on you will not hear any transmissions coming in on the VFO-B frequency. Once you go into APRS setup and disable the modem, it will then work as a traditional dual-VFO radio.

      Great points Richard! Joel told me about that. I keep mute on. I got tired of hearing the chirps. I also keep the volume on VFO-B turned down. I turn off APRS once I reach the summit, so I can use the CAM feature. On mine the A-12 flashes when APRS is muted.

      @n1rbd 4 роки тому

      @@n4hnhradio Yep, it will just be A12 if unmuted. There is an active iGate near my QTH. I'm going to go drive around near it and test some things today.

      Correct me if i'm wrong... but if the A12 is flashing on VFO-B, and you have beaconing set to auto or smart... won't you be tx'ing a beacon packet over whatever frequency is active on VFO-B? Therefore, if you're not actually wanting to tx APRS packets, you need to turn off the APRS modem... or do I have it all wrong? I thought that the modem doesn't necessarily care what frequency you have selected, it just tx's. Obviously you won't hear any packets if you're not on 144.390, but i think you can still tx them...

    • @n4hnhradio
      @n4hnhradio  4 роки тому +1

      @@toddsternish APRS mute is a receive function. If you don’t want to transmit beacons, you must disable the APRS modem, as you surmised. It would be annoying to others if you don’t have VFO-B set to 144.390, and you are transmitting beacons. I hope this helps.

    These are great videos. I am curious. What has been your most distant FM simplex qso on a SOTA mountain “Chumming” with your HT? Thanks, de af4od.

      124 miles using my Yaesu FT-270R and Diamond SRH770S antenna from Standing Indian Mountain, in North Carolina. It’s common to reach 60 to 90 miles from some summits.

    I also program satellite frequencies using split mode. Can work satellites even without a Yagi.

      @@n4hnhradio I think you accidentally put the wrong frequency for APRS.

      Yes. Typo. It’s 144.390. Thanks for catching it. Which video is this for? I’m pretty sure my APRS video shows the correct APRS frequency.

      @@n4hnhradio it was in the FT-3D comment to a person that asked about your frequencies. Oh and by the way, the whole FT-3D series is most excellent! 👍

    • @n4hnhradio
      @n4hnhradio  2 роки тому

      I can only see the comments. UA-cam Studio doesn’t show me which video the comment is about. It only shows me the comments. I have to find which video the comment pertains to the old fashioned way - search the comments of every video. Anyway, there is a video in the FT3DR playlist that is all about APRS. Hopefully viewers watch it.

      Pete, there was once a small booklet that listed repeaters by location. Now there is an app called RepeaterBook. I usually program my favorites first and then I program the rest according to distance from my home. 73, N4HNH

    Can I use this without inputting a call sign?

    • @n4hnhradio
      @n4hnhradio  4 роки тому

      You could use it strictly as a radio. No APRS and beaconing would be possible. I wouldn’t pay that much for a radio if I wasn’t going to use the part that makes it cost so much. The FT-60R or FT-70DR would be the better choice if you just want a good HT. The FT-70DR has C4FM digital voice. The FT-60R is a straight FM dual-band portable. It is considered by many to be the workhorse HT of the industry.
