Neat, thank you for posting these instrutions and someone linking this video on Facebook, I had no idea that SMSGTE existed, I was able to follow your instuctions on my FT2, to see how different it was vs the ft3, and I did not feel like swapping batteries as the on the FT3 was dead, so it's in the charger.
Jonathan, actually the instructions I finally found were for the FT2D, Thanks for watching and commenting my hope was it would help others in a easy step by step. 73
Who is the control operator for the reply from the phone, and isnt it possible a non-ameture would reply, and how is that controlled and third-party traffic doxumented?
I assume you have the APRS modem on along with the GPS power also need to have the APRS frequency in the B slot wont run APRS in the A slot, Good job it was helpful I will have to try next time I am in range of the digipeater
@@louismorrone3102 if you check out this video it has a pretty good overview of the menus and function on the FT3DR. ua-cam.com/video/VFKLiowjNpo/v-deo.html . But to answer what I was saying make sure the lower or B VFO is tuned to 144.390 MHz then it is. For GPS power hold the”DISP” key, touch “APRS” menu, go to “20 GPS Power” hit DISP to select, Turn the dial knob to “GPS ON” press push to talk to go back do the same to get to “9 APRS Modem” turn the dial knob to “1200bps” and hit PTT now you should be working APRS. The issue will be that you need to be able to hit a digipeter for the sms or positioning to work as that is how you get back to the internet. If you go to “aprs.fi” you should be able to see your call sign on the map if you are reaching a repeater. Good luck I have issues from my location hitting a repeater and only show on the map when mobile closer to one of the locations.
Besides the radio what else to send a text do you need? Obviously a 2 meter repeater within range......what kind of repeater? I'm guessing digital capable/does that imply Yeasu Fusion? So if no Fusion repeaters around it won't work. Luckily we have one semi-close by.
Okay. So question about setting as I can’t get my to work. On main screen. Do you have. Tx FM or auto on. Also do you have it on A12 Fm orTx rx Dow mode?
Does this work in the middle of wilderness with no radio/cellfone towers? (Sorry if its a stupid question, im looking to get into HAM, som im trying to learn stuff before i buy a radio) I would love any benifits regarding hiking/tracking..
Kevin , yes it can work out hiking you can improve your chances by taking a a roll up J-pole or Slim-Jim antenna and getting it as high as possible and on top of peaks will help also. It alll really depends on the repeater systems in your area and a mobile radio with more power can also increase your chance. There are only a few radios that do APRS those that I know of are from Yaesu and Kenwood but Kenwood has discontinued a lot of their radios. You can also use a regular HT or mobile with 3rd party apps but I have never used them. I think Josh from Ham Radio crash course has a video on them.
@@KK6USYHamRadioAdventures Wow, great responce! very informative.Thank you very much! I can´t wait til i get a licens and a Ham. But cause of Rona the local club here in Denmark is closed, so im waiting until they open, then i can get the info on getting a licens. Who knows, maybe ill reach the other side of the planet one day! Ha :-D
@@KK6USYHamRadioAdventures This is great feedback thank you - I was somewhat leaning that direction because of the power increase. What I'd give up is the ability to move to different vehicles easily.
I'm getting the same thing. I think it implies something is set up wrong, since it's the same beep you get if you try and transmit on FRS or other non-HAM bands.
Thanks for this! I will be trying this on a Kenwood TH-D74 as the APRS in my Yaesu FT3D SUCKS. The Kenwood works flawlessly with the digipeater, but the Yaesu can't hit it.
Thanks for putting together a straight-forward no nonsense video on this. Can’t wait to get this radio.
Very helpful waiting on FT5DR. I have that garmin inreach mini for my main form of off grid communication but learning about APRS is gonna be fun
I just got my FT3D today here at HRO in Phoenix.
Im going to set this up first thing!!! Thank You!! 73
Enjoy that radio and thanks for watching!
This was excellent!
Excellent video, thank you. I bought the FR1DR when it was first released. They have made some big improvements over the first model
Thanks for showing this. This is exactly what I was hoping to do: send a text message when there is no phone service.
Wow!!!! Thank you!!!
Quick and to the point. Thanks! Makes me wish I would have bought the Ft3dr instead of the Ft2dr 😂. Thanks for the vid

Followed your steps, worked great..
Can you pls make a video on how to reply and send when you receive a message on Aprs and smsgte?

Thanks! I finally got it to work 🙏👍
Thanks for the video, Love my FT3D
That’s pretty cool Chuck thanks for sharing this!!

Very cool!
Nice! As soon as I get home from work I am trying that as I just got a FT3D a few weeks ago. 73, K8JLW
Reid, I couldn't find this I hope it is clear enought how to do it! Hopefully you have a Digipeater near you, Thanks for watching!
Is that 144.390 mhz important? Or is that the digipeater freq
In the US and some other countries, the primary nationwide APRS frequency is 144.39 MHz.

i get the text on my phone but on radio i dont get conformation it sent or i dont get a message back when i send one from my phone??
That's strange but I think a lot has to do with how well you get into the repeater I had problems a couple times.
Thank you! The bottom center of my display shows "auto". How did you set it for TX DN mode?

very cool thank you
It’s just plain awkward to send a text with that handheld. Not intuitive in the least. I wonder if the newest one coming out now is any easier to use?
Dont you need a repeater or digipeter? I am missing something because its not working
Yes you need to hit the repeater

How are you feeling about this while off roading? I’m trying to decide between the HT and the 400xdr in the vehicle. KF0GDO
Jay If I was to do it again I would get the ftm400 or the kenwood version. the reason would be for more output power to reach the repeaters easier.
