Now I would call this quilting, not pleats. I did this for a trunk lid cover in my car with perforated vinyl, I struggled a bit with the directional (pulling) sewing wanting to warp the diamond pattern (causing 'waves'), but I think your process of starting a larger X and not stitching the closest line would go a long way to help alleviate that.
Thank you Bluewolf - as I usually refer to Sailrite for professional methods/instruction when confronted with a challenge, I was baffled enuf by this that I actually looked up the definition of 'pleat' to be certain I hadn't missed something... nope, 'pleat' is still defined as "a double or multiple fold in cloth usually held in place by stitching the top or side." This demonstration is 'quilting', often referencing the diamond shape as 'lozenge quilting'. I have 50+ years sewing with limited quilting experience - assorted forays into upholstery (short tenure at Wendell Castle Design, and reupholtering furniture for fun), but I'm always open to learning something new!
how would I do this stitch on something that i can't fit under a sewing machine? like embroidering a couch or car seats in a vehicle? i wouldn't be able to remove the fabric to place under sewing machine, wondering if its possible/how to do it. I've never tried embroidered by hand before
Excellent video is it me or does everyone get a little eye strain when sewing diamonds ? I learned that trick stitching the larger x that alleviates the waves from a lady at a quilting shop. I was using 1/2" foam with black upholstery velour thinking great going to get pulling, warping, and it will not be even. So the lady at a quilt shop where I ordered my foam she asked how my last diamond pleated cover I did with black Naugahyde came out. I told her I fought it, it was a nightmare, a few puckered spots, not as even as I wanted, and asked her if she had any tips because this lady does gorgeous pleats and flawless quilting no bunching perfectly crisp. She said let me give you a few tips. She said do everything with your spray adhesive, get it smoothed out/even, lay it out, and now the real trick your going to think its crazy pin and baste first lock it in place in more than one X. She said set your machine up get it right. Now sew with everything locked sew it in your machine set little pieces of cloth scrap same type of material as your top material to sew through on the start to the end of every pass doing this you have a continuous stitch through that layer no start or stop cut the scraps loose with scissors. She also mentioned do the math for distance so you know when to wind a new bobbin or drop a new pre wound so that you do not have any hesitations just go. I still do what she said even though it takes a few more minutes its worth those extra steps. Thanks 👍
To save wasting thread you can use the collection of remainder bobbins on the short corner runs. It might take many hours with a particular sewing machine to look at a bobbin and judge how many inches or feet you have left on a bobbin but it is useful for reducing waste. As you say, if you are not sure then change it.
May I suggest isopropyl alcohol to take care of removing the blue chalk. Work wonders at my shop for tailors chalk and other hard to remove chalks/marking objects. Keep up the great insightful videos and tricks. !!
@@SailriteDIY ok. I will just have to make do with my 201K for when I need portable sewing. I have to be honest, I rarely need to sew away from my shop.

Usually I like to space the stitches 2 inches apart. I like to sew the stitch with a 6mm stitch length.

He means the "harp"--- the area between the needle and the beefy part of your machine-
or the opening to the right of the needle.
