1. Closet organization. A functioning closet is the base of your wardrobe because if it works, you have the right height of your hangers, you organize it in a way that nothing gets lost and that you maximize the space that you get out of it.
2. Quality hangers. I urge you to invest in good hangers with a wide shoulder pad because it protects your jacket shoulder so you can wear the jacket for 30-40 years without having any issues. On top of that, a sturdy, felted trouser bar prevents trousers from sliding down and if you have enough space, you can even double or triple up your pants in case you have more pants than jackets.
3. Invest in a good iron and even more importantly, an ironing board. Not all irons are alike. mot people can afford a regular steam iron, it's a consumer grade but it has a good amount of steam holes and you have to refill the water on top and that helps to release wrinkles in your shirts or your suits.
4. Garment steamer. Even though you can use a regular iron that has a steam button to get some steam out of it, it's very little compared to a designated garment steamer. I use a garment steamer especially when I change seasons when I go from winter to spring summer and vice versa.
5. Clothes brushes. They work particularly well in conjunction with steam. What they do is release dirt and they help to keep the intergrity of your garment. If you bursh regularly, your garments will last longer because there's less dirt so moths will get to it less easily and overall, with a clothesbrush, you want something that is not too stiff and not too soft because for your garments, it really has to get under it and you don't want to damage them.
6. Shoes accessories. The first thing you want is a shoe horn simply because it helps to protect the cap of your shoe when you put them on. Another item is shoe trees. It elongates the life span of your shoes tremendously. A shoe shine kit comes in handy because it's a place where you can store all your shoe polish, your cloth, your brushes, everything you need.
7. Garment bags. It's ideal if you transition your wardrobe in and out and you want to store it away but protecting it at the same time.
8. Off season storage. It's very tempting to leave your entire wardrobe in your closet or where it's easily reachable all year round but in reality, you will only access a limited amount of clothes at a time.
9. Good maintenance services and with that, I mean people like menders or maybe a neighborhood lady who's very good at sewing or patching because eventually, things will go wrong, you'll wear something out, you'll have a stain that won't come out in the dry cleaner and having someone who can help you with that is really essential and you don't want to miss that.
10. Alterations tailor. No matter if you mostly have custom garments or if you buy everything off the rack or vintage, the alteration tailor should be a man's best friend. Why? Simply because there's not a single thing off the rack that will fit you perfectly simply because you're a human.

A word of advice about shoes. Have 2 pair of good neutral shoes and alternate them each day. This will permit the interior of the shoe to completely dry out and they will last much longer.

same goes for mechanical watches, 2 or 3 watches, properly maintained, will last you 10 or 20 years and look as good as the day you bought them,
Shoe trees are a must as well, preserves shape as well as aids drying
@@SuperBullyone a good watch lasts a lot longer than that. There's vintage wristwatches from the late 1800's still ticking away today, and if we consider pocket watches, even older than that.
To sum it up, they should last you a lifetime and if you wish you can hand them down to your children/grandchildren.

My grandmother was born in Italy and she, for all her life, has sewn garments from scratch and has tailored all my family's clothing, so I think I'm all set with tips 8 and 9 :)

On the subject of shoe trees, I would also mention that you should never buy varnished wood ones. It defeats part of the object, since they are non-absorbent!

Absolutely standard in any tailors or dress making studio/atelier.
Actually first step to building a wardrobe is buying good hangers, good shoe trees and good clothes brush. Next is to buy good iron and even better ironing board. And finally as a third step you can start buying good quality clothing and be sure it ain't going to be destroyed by inexperienced user.

Great video. I have a pair of barker brogues, a pair of loake shoes and a crombie coat. The price was 40 pounds for the lot at a local charity shop. It shows if you are prepared to shop around you can find great bargains.
stephen legg Wow! I love all of those makes. Have Loakes and Barkers myself but not a Crombie which I would love. By keeping an eye on T K Maxx I've managed to get several pairs of quality shoes (they quite frequently have Loakes and Barkers) for £80 or less each

2:22 don't go to a carpenter, go to a cabinet maker. Carpenters generally don't do fine cabinet making, they build house frames, decks, large things. That might be able to build the basic shelves, and set up the wardrobe for the cabinets to go in, but I wouldn't get a carpenter to build a wardrobe.
Also if you want to get wrinkles out and you need more steam, get a spray bottle of distilled water, and spray your clothes lightly to produce more steam. Also helps if you want to put in a crease, or make a crease more pronounced, for pants, or if you're into that style for your shirt sleeves, or you're in the military.
I believe this is a local terminology issue. In British English a carpenter refers primarily to a furniture maker, rather than a builder. As you might imagine, I was very confused when I first started watching North American woodworking UA-cam channels.

I had lot of consumer-grade irons but after all of them died after a year or so I went with a professional iron - yes it needs some extra space but it so much easier to use. I also agree with the importance of ironing board - when I bought mine I unpacked a whole pallet to find one which has perfect flat surface. For me vacuum is a bit unnecessary I went with the mesh back ironing board.

Nice suggestions. I'd like to add that for dress shirts, it is better to launder at home, do not put them in the dryer, then iron while slightly damp if possible. For ironing, recommend Laurastar. It is a Swiss brand and while not inexpensive, has the benefits of steam plus the fan to pull the steam through the shirt.

Very nice video. I find most shirt hangers slope too much to hang my shirt without folding or creasing. The ones I've found that do these least are the slim velvety covered ones from Costco and other places that seem bigger and have a shallower angle

I watch your videos I find then very helpful. We have recently moved to an area that does not have a dry cleaner. I have 2 questions, 1) Have you ever tried any home products such as Dryel. We are now 4 hrs and 3 mountain passes away from the nearest city with a dry Cleaner. 2) I need help to take care of stains especially food stains. I doesn’t happen often, but I do need to take care of my husbands suits. I have also found the skills you teach good to better take care of my good dresses, even my casual cloths have a better look, and I thought I was good at taking care of my cloths. Thanks for all your help.
its easy to ignore or forget those types of maintenance items! unfortunetely dont yet own a closet proper for storing clothing on hangers or shoe trees or a iron etc but wil certainly invest in these things! thanks alot!

My larger shoes would smell literally worse than a dumpster no matter how much gold bond I put in them.
Now they don’t smell and are perfectly dry.

Als if you want your pants to an heirloom. Make sure to pad the bars extra. That way the curve when it hangs isn't too sharp.

I found a lower end second had store that with some regular browsing found some very nice articles of clothing at avery reasonable price. One vintage Gucci black purse in good condition. I use it on special ocassions. A sturdy but high quality simple brown leather leather Talbot purse. Both were in the high $20s.
A lovely full length wool winter coat in excellent condition. A two strand cashmere pullover light blue sweater for $19. I regularly donated various items there and received additional discounts. Good advice. You don't have to spend a great deal of money to look well dressed.

Kate Marsh you're not supposed to hang knitwear, fold it or roll it nearly. If only risk handing in very tightly knitted fabrics.
I would like to try Kirby's Project Hangers over Butler Luxury ones since they come out in 4 sizes!! Unfortunately though they don't ship to Europe therefore this won't be happen
generic ones work fine, just look for ones shaped similar to the shoe/boot they are going in , they come in a range of how pointed or rounded they are and be sure that they aren't too big for the shoe

cedar absorbs moisture very well, and keeps moths away, accordingly, cedar shoe trees keep the moisture level down and cedar hangars keep the moths away.

You can buy wooden hangers at thrift stores for next to nothing. I bought a big box of them for like $2. People donate them and it would even be worth buying a $3 garment and throwing it away for the hanger before paying $40 for one coat hanger.

Bobthehatking Don't do it. They don't actually clean. It's just a scented bag you put your clothes in and toss in the dryer, which could end very badly.
