Hullo Johnny, I have used plenty of "cardboard" in artworks in the past. If you want them to have any "lifetime" you gotta use some sealer on the surface. I have used clear gesso with great effect! The biggest problem is most cardboard uses acidic glues! This will eat your paint and other art supplies! I have used white gesso for many projects as I wanted a stiff surface but the thick cardboard is full of glue even insect eggs! You gotta seal it up to make it last any time at all! If your going to use other colors white gesso is fine and cheaper too. I even use gesso with the brown wrapping papers. They just do not tell you what these "pretty" brown papers have in them, acid or glue or even bad Ph content! As pretty as they are unless you treat/seal them they will not last very long at all! I know some artists want that "temporary" art and design it into their work. Not me, I want anything I spent my time on to last long past my life and be a burden to others!
