@35:47 As I got into their musical catalogue I realized they missed out on the height of 90's/early 00's trend where artists were releasing so many re-recorded remixes of the music. I wish they worked with David Morales on a bunch of dance remixes of their music (I love the re-recorded dance mixes of Mariah Carey's they've done over the years) . Also wish they worked with DJ Premier, Missy, Rodney Jerkins, Tim & Bob, TrackMasters, Chuckii Booker, etc, to produce hip-hop and r&b remixes for them. @40:30 I recall Dawn saying in one of those interviews she did that she was telling the other girls sometime in the 90's that they needed to have their own cosmetic line (I think it was with MAC for lipsticks). She says they didn't want to or something like that and then she saw another celebrity get the lipstick line instead. I believe I wrote this on that EV and Spice Girls video y'all did, I think EV should've had everything Spice Girls had branding and promotion wise. They should've had a cosmetic and clothing lines, Barbie Dolls, more food branding, etc. Them having a wig line wouldn't have been bad if done right. We see how much hair is an influence in culture (I remember when Rihanna cut her hair or when Remy Ma had black hair with blonde bangs, I saw a bunch of women getting those styles). Also think it's crazy with a name like EnVOGUE and them being so fashionable that they were never on the cover of any additions of Vogue Magazine. They should've at last graced the covers of every international version of Vogue (even though I think they should've been on the cover of Vogue, American fashion magazine photo shoots aren't as creative as the international ones), as well as, Elle, I-D, Harper's Bazaar, Cosmopolitan, Vanity Fair, etc. I'm glad some of the Black publications like VIBE and Jet featured them (have they ever been on the cover of Essence?).
LOVE this "coulda, woulda, shoulda" episode. It is fun yet bittersweet. I can definitely see them representing a fashion house back in the 90s as well as makeup...You easily take that diet coke commercial and swap it out for covergirl and it would have been just as fierce. In terms of what they could do today, I love your two lifetime movie or series ideas...I think that fits them. I also love the idea of revisiting the animated Josie & The Pussycats as well as Jem and the Holograms and updating it slightly using their voices and singing. You all remember when they did the animated movie "The Steadfast Tin Soldier" with Tisha Campbell. I thought they did a good job and I can see them doing that with one of those cartoons....or like you said a new cartoon that is a remixed version of those classics. Thanks for another fun episode. I'm still on the Soul Flower vibe since last week...I keep bundling ooh boy with Slave's Just a Touch of love. I was thinking I would love to here them do a mixture of those two songs in their live performances. I think it would be perfect for them to do lots of runs and extra harmonies. Cheers💜
They did incorporate “Just A Touch Of Love” in one of the performances I watched. It’s somewhere on UA-cam but it was definitely the current lineup. They also did Cameo’s “Candy” and Sheila E’s “The Glamorous Life”- I think they performed in Chicago in that particular video
En Vogue was never going to have longevity for the simple fact these girls were a producer's creation. They had no loyalty whatsoever to one another. Dawn was undervalued because she wasn't the best singer in the group but she was the fan favorite and Sylvia underestimated Dawn's importance to the group. Had she known they would never have another hit without Dawn I think she would have played things differently. Sylvia fumbled En Vogue at their commercial PEAK. They had the biggest hit of their career before breaking up. That is still crazy to me.
Did anyone pick up when Cindy says "We never can do anything unless we all agree...well back then". Which confirms Rhona is just the hired help CIndy and Terry make all the decisions which is why they prefer the lineup they have. Cindy was a decent actress and I thought she would do more after Juice. She had potential and the right look for a black actress in the 90s.
