This was the game of my childhood! I miss those days! I got the JP MegeDrive 4 months before the official UK release version, I got with ThunderForce 3 that had just been released at the time, June/July of 1990. I played this game to death, I also used to play this game through with no death and end with around 26 lives. I committed everything to memory! Anyway, fast forward 31 years, I recently made myself a RetroPie, and this was the first game I had to hunt down. It amazing how you forget, I can't barely complete 1 level now.
I'd give the nod to Thunder Force IV, longer game, more challenging, the absolute pinnacle of the series. Not to mention some nice special effects in some stages, like flying over that desert stage, and what looks to be a sandstorm going on.
I started rewatching the gameplays for this game about 5 years ago, and it literally had one video. Glad that there are more people that know this gem. Not running into the environment is one of the hardest parts of this game imo. We literally had sonic 1, last battle, this, battle toads double dragon, mortal kombat series, atomic runner and robokid. What a good time. Nostalgia city!
People say the Genesis is garbage. Lol, show them this! I'm so fucking sick of hearing how Link to the Past is such a good game. Real gamers know about the gems on the Genesis!!!!
As a SNES-NES fanboy when I was kid, I support your statement: Thunder Force III and IV along with other titles as Gunstar Heroes or Castlevania: Bloodlines showed the true potential of the Genesis.
@@1Corinthians15.1-4 Had I known then that the Thunder Force series existed, I wouldn't have let my sister sell our Genesis to buy a PS1 way back in the 90's
Anyone remember mean machines games mag? This was rated about 98 percent in it and you can see why, it pushed the mega drive to its absolute limits thanks to the brilliant game programmers
I definitely remember this game. It was one of my favorites. I beat it several times but I don't think it was ever on mania. Don't remember. Either way all the levels were always hard for me no matter what. This game always had that true arcade feel. Loved it.
Mania is a level of difficulty well beyond the hardest. This level was usually achieved through joystick commands when entering the options menu. This also happened on streets of rage 2.
I'm really bad at such games when I was young 😂 But I used to watch my Dad play when he returns from work and he completed the game. I think this video's gonna be a bitter sweet memory for me one day. My fave tune was Back to the Fire! But this is played in MANIA level gosh you pro!
*Thanks for the TF3 hookup! I partially played this game because if I remember well, I rented it along with M.U.S.H.A., another great Genesis shooter.*
I also beat this on mania without dying, back in the day. I loved this game, played it all the time. I was so excited when I bought it.. Side scrolling shooters were my favorite games. Wasn't terribly good at most of them but just something about the sound effects and music, and everything in this game that I got really good at it.
Wow, those last bosses didn't seem like they had to take much damage to be destroyed, especially for the game played at the highest difficulty. Any way you cut it, kudos to you! :)
Stage 5: Cerberus (Target: Cerberus, Weak Point: Core System) Stage 6: Orn Base (Target: Off Luck, Weak Point: Extra Weapon Bay) Final Stage: Orn Core (Target: Cha Os, Weak Point: Body) I just think Targets and weak points reveals in some of Thunder Force III stages.
Something I never noticed till it was pointed put to me: the Gargoyle boss comes back in different forms. In Lightening Force it's the Diver, and it returns in a few later games as well. Kind of a cool detail.
I owned 2, 3 and 4 on the Genesis. All awesome. I have to admit that I do not like the top view stages of TF2, on the other hand the side scrolling stages are fantastic!
@@sneakyracerpr Yeah Side Scrolling fits TF3 and 4 very well..I want more and hopefully, they should be ported into iphone and Nintendo Switch someday!
The thunderous saga deserves to be in the shooter hall of fame with legends as Gaiares, The Steel Empire, trouble shooter aka battle maina, bio hazard battle aka crying, r type insector x, et al
Always played this when I was at school early 90s one of my favourite game intros press pause then up 10 times then down c until you get all weapons then press a to get claw
I am under the impression that the Japanese version is way harder, even when played on normal, not in terms of speed or enemy fire, but the enemies themselves can take way more damage, specially the mid level bosses & the bosses themselves, it takes almost a minute to kill off the lobster boss, even with sever equipped.
The soundtrack in Thunder Force III is way better than Lightening Force’s soundtrack. These are tunes that I can hum and they stick with you. I can’t find anything like that in Lightening Force.
Jetzt weiß ich warum ich es nie geschafft habe man muss ja das ganze Spiel auswendig können und sich so schnell entscheiden welche Waffe man nun für welchen Gegner nimmt habe ich nie hinbekommen
sigh, too bad the flashing effects don't capture well. Due to either Emulation frameskip opr a capture device that doesn't capture it :P. Other than that? Reviewers in 1990: "Wow such good music and graphics!" Devil Crush team at Technosoft taking over from the Thunderforce 3 team:"Hold our beer!" (Sound team remained the same though :P).
It's an unpopular opinion, but I still prefer this game to TF4, aka Lightening Force. Somehow it feels more balanced and polished, and to me even the soundtrack is more memorable.
So orchestrated, sound, gameplay, a true moment in gaming history, such talented individuals
25 YEARS LATER I FOUND WHATS THE NAME OF THIS GAME... THE BEST DAYS OF MY CHILDHOOD
dude me too sooo happy i finally figured it out
This was the first game i owned and played in Mega Drive
me too . Stay with my all junior high school even now .
Just got an authentic one for 9.99 lol
I spent the last hour watching the next game!
This was my childhood right here. I can still remember all the sound fx clearly. What a great game.

"Laser!!" "Wave!!" "One Up!!" "Shield!!" "Hunter!!"
I first played Thunder Force III in April 1991. I never forgot such a wonderful experience. It was the best shoot-em-up on Megadrive, it's clear!
I'd give the nod to Thunder Force IV, longer game, more challenging, the absolute pinnacle of the series. Not to mention some nice special effects in some stages, like flying over that desert stage, and what looks to be a sandstorm going on.
Good days....
Everything in this game is perfect. This game is perfect. A precious jewel.

Great bunch of games there 👍.
Also, this soundtrack through! Enough said!
The Hydra stage is my favorite ever
The soundtrack is amazing
i like all of the soundtrack

💯 The Sega Genesis was far more superior than Super Nintendo. The SN was more popular but Genesis had the better games.
I just started playing this game, do you have to beat it to unlock mania mode? I have the sega mini

Techno Soft. This music stayed in my head.
Played this in 1991. Still the king of shooters.
after TF IV
@@Antonio-hx7yh before TF IV, this one is better.
To access the configuration menu press A+B+C+START !
I love how it starts playing the stage theme on the map screen before the next level starts
Yeah that's something that's not in the AC version or the arcade version. It's only on Genesis. :)
love the music! very classical when i was at high school!
Awesome walkthrough! Amazing job, my friend! :)
That level with the animated lava....eye popping at the time. For a great little game I always recall this was hard to get hold of second hand.
"Claw!.... Sever!... Shield!... Lancer!... Wave!... Fire!.... Hunter!..."
Great gameplay. This game very much reminds me of Herzog Zwii. Same kinda music sound, same sound effects used. fond memories
Anyone remember mean machines games mag? This was rated about 98 percent in it and you can see why, it pushed the mega drive to its absolute limits thanks to the brilliant game programmers
and then they pushed it even more with TF4
Volverlo a ver me llena el corazón.
Soundtrack of the forever. Bestest game,.
Thunder force 3 is ABSOLUTELY STUNNING and AWESOMELY AMAZING
May the thunder force be with you always 💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖
I love the soundtrack. The Seiren stage reminds me of an 80s Japanese Pop disco music.

13:11 use your missile weapon, it kills the bosses nearly immediately.

Long life for the music composers: Toshihary YAMANISHI & Tomomi OHTANI! ❤🎶👌🎈✨😋🍬😜
I can just tell U, that U R from another planet! Maybe an alien! 😂😂😂
The best OST ever!

Играл в эту игру ещё пацаном семи лет. Не мог найти, а назван е даже не знал. Спасибо за отличный контент!
You are insane! Well played! :)
love this game and the music
Aaah the memories... thanks for reminding me that at least i was once a happy person
This is classic! I played this 33 years ago with my sega MD2
Only handful of developer made this game
Wow
Must have exert so much energy to make this masterpiece
i completed this game on mania without dying too. during ending if you tried pressing your buttons the pilot sitting in the cockpit will wave at you.

not only that but on the second picture also 1 of the characters blinks providing you hold the button down if you have auto fire on
Thunder spirits in my opinion still has the best soundtracks out of all the games
Finnaly i find it... my childhood.....
As a child I also beat the game with no deaths, but now I can even beat the game.

Well said
Judging from the story ending the makers of this game seemed very wary of AI and very much against it at that time. 25:35
Wow! This cart could give Truxton a run for its money...
Great playthrough!
Loved the water stage here. SEIREN
The music in this game is still incredible (Going full nerd right now ) Part 3 was the only one I ever owned in the series.

The 4th game was always my favourite. Great game series.
Loved this game back in the day!
absolute masterpiece, only bested by TF IV

One of the Nick Arcade season 1 video challenges
When I played first, the planet Hydra
Looking back I really can't believe I used to play this??alol compared to video games now there's no comparison

mazonemayu they are the same. I grew up playing the jp version.
I rented this as a kid. I only got to the final stage.

In 2018 Still Miss Ending OST
From 9 to 27 I still remember ending OST
Gracias por hacerme feliz en la infancia
Played this for the first time today on my Mega drive mini and damn, its hard! I get through 3 of 5 planets before end boss all the time.
The same starting stage. Since you can collect all kinds of weapon in this stage.
Wow. I never realised just how much the track Gyges, Can you help me please from Tyrian was modelled on the first stage of this game.
30 years of Thunder Force III on June 8, 2020
I couldn’t remember the name to this game
I really love Thunder Force 3 Thema song
12:08 the bass🙉
I love the game n its music are well made
Best game in sega also nice sound
The soundtrack in Thunder Force III is way better than Lightening Force’s soundtrack. These are tunes that I can hum and they stick with you. I can’t find anything like that in Lightening Force.
What's with your game soundtrack? It sounds like someone transposed an octave-ish down on the melody.
(On Hades)
levels were tough as nails but bosses were just had way too few hit points to be challenging
voice: t says the weapon power up( go! fire! laser! hunter! shever!
Genesis version = superior version
Still have my TF3 cartridge around the house somewhere. I remember using Hunter to get through most of the game.
Is lightning force the updated version of this game because I swear you have the same weapons it’s just got better graphics on the genesis
Love this game n da soundtrack is da best.
Good skill bro! 👍
This game looks better than IV to me

I was thinking the whole time "why is this one ship so mad at the other ships" -> the ending about the COMPUTER! NO ONE WANTS SELF-AWARE COMPUTERS. A+
