The first official minute repeater watch came to life in 1892 (Louis Brandt) but minute repeater clocks have existed since 1676 (Edward Barlow). They were particularly useful prior to modern day electricity. 💡 One could not so easily check the time but they could certainly HEAR it. 👂

In today's episode, Battle of the Minute Repeaters, you'll get to witness six different minute repeaters in all of their glory. Because different watch shapes and metals affect the sound of the movement, I have watches in both traditional and non-traditional shapes, as well as in gold, platinum, titanium and white gold. You're tuned into episode 84 of What's On My Desk (WOMD). Let the Battle of the Minute Repeaters begin!
👉 For all of you Independent Watchmaker lovers out there 😍 I'll be featuring watches from both Jean Dunand and Svend Andersen today!
Mechanically speaking, minute repeaters are some of the most complicated watches that exist, with the grand sonnerie being the most intricate. ⚙️ While there is no longer a need for them, they are still viewed as being extremely valuable due to the history and complex nature they represent. Minute repeaters call for countless parts and a lot of labor, which is why they're usually so expensive, reserved for those who can pay for the luxury.
Some may refer to these decorated movements as "novelty" pieces but that word need not apply here. (Drag and drop to the recycle bin 🗑️.) Not when the following synonyms are "doodad" and "knickknack."
    ✘ doodad:
a gadget or other object whose name the speaker does not know or cannot recall
    ✘ knickknack:
a small worthless object, especially a household ornament
A minute repeater isn't a petty thing but it sure as hell is an INNOVATIVE one.
Much has changed in in the world of studying and measuring time since then, and it's clear just how much art has inspired watch design throughout centuries but watchmakers STILL create minute repeaters to prove their skill, to display their worthiness, and to show you that they too respect, and want to pay tribute to, the history of horology.
💬 In your opinion, what's the best sounding minute repeater out of all of the ones I presented you with today?

The minute repeater is one of the nicest complication in a watch. I like the Sven Anderson minute repeater, I like the Corum minute repeater, the Jaeger Le Coultre minute repeaterand the Jean Dunand minute repeater. I like the fact that in the Corum and Jaeger LeCoultre I can see the minute repeaters in the skeleton dial.

Roman let me just say that your content and dedication is just amazing. It's amazing that you are able to show us so many different interesting and amazing watches and teach us all about not just the market but the actual history and horology of the watches. You seem extremely professional and trustworthy. It's obvious that your success stems from hard work and great ethics. If I am ever in a position to buy an AP/Rolex/PP I would certainly reach out to you for your advice and hopefully the said watch. That being said, can I get your opinion on the Rolex Sky Dweller? It would be my first Rolex and I think its an interesting piece. It's obviously well known because its a Rolex, but not that common because it's quite complicated. I was thinking about getting the TT with black face, I think that's a beautiful dial, and from what I can tell actually not that hard to find one. Maybe this is the sweet spot of Rolex sports/dressy watches? Do you think $15K is doable on this watch? Thanks in advance for any help.

If you want to do something nice for a fellow marine check out the new Hodinkee video and the vet who’s Tudor Submariner took a bullet in Vietnam. Very moving story about how he got that watch back from the doctor Marine who saved him, 50 years later!

The Corum and the JLC were the best and I just love both brands, but the corum started loosing steam by the time the minutes were chiming.
    The Jaeger just smoked it
And now click like if you liked the video BEFORE you actually saw it, like I do always w/ Roman.... He's a safe bet
