  • Baby Come Back (Player) Note for Note Guitar Solo Lesson with TABs. Huge hit from the 1970's (1977). This soft rock hit has a great guitar solo to end the song. Very soulful with a nice theme running through it. "Baby Come Back" is a song by the American rock band Player. It was released in late 1977 as the lead single from their 1977 self-titled debut album, and was the breakthrough single for the band, gaining them mainstream success, hitting number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number ten on the R&B charts in 1978. Their biggest hit single, the song was written and performed by Peter Beckett and J.C. Crowley, the founders of Player.

    Great playing Mark. I remember learning this song back in the 70's I believe? I don't ask for your tabs because I learn much more by watching your fingers. I do cheat though. I slow it down by using a product that's free. It' a VLC media player. You are an awesome guitar player!

      Thanks! This covers all the way up to that end point in the song. There is one additional lick the guitarist is playing, but it's somewhat inaudible. It's along the lines of the fast minor pentatonic lick that I cover at 0:26 and 8:35.

    I am really surprised you don’t have many more likes to this. This was well done. Probably one of the best covers of this. I have a question in general when you learn lead. Is it just playing the solo over a million times before you memorize all the notes or is it just knowing the different scales that you know exactly where one note is going to the next? I just wonder if you want to learn lead in general what’s the best way to play exactly as the artist has done? I also hear so many different views as far as yes u should know theory first but then others say skip it altogether. If u wouldn’t mind giving me advice as far as knowing what scales is essential. I know the pentatonic but feel like I’m always stuck in “that box” that many fall into. Lastly should a lead guitarist know triads, myodian I think it’s called etc? Thanks for your time 😊

    • @MarkZabel
      @MarkZabel  8 місяців тому +1

      Thanks. As a player I'm much more interested in improvising and composing my own solos, but I do learn other's solos to understand how other players approach melody, playing over particular chord progressions, phrase their lines, etc.
      I find most of my work in learning a solo is listening. I listen to the solo at least 5-10 times depending on how long and/or complex it is. When I can "sing" the solo, then I can start to play it.
      I do know some theory - a good amount - but developing your ear to finger relationship with your guitar is at least as important.
      In any event, that's how I do it. If I can't sing the solo, I don't know it.

    Grate teaching my friend,
    thanks for helping me with this beautiful song. I think the triad at
    12:15 is most common to be played at fret 15, 11 (1st str) and 13 (2st
    str). It doesnt make any difference anyway... just saying. Thank you again, great video!!!

    • @MarkZabel
      @MarkZabel  3 роки тому

      Thanks! I don't hear a flanger on the solo guitar at the end. A good amount of reverb I think. There's heavy chorus on the beginning part for sure, but I don't hear much "goop" on the solo guitar at the end.

    Hello! I love this song and the tutorial! I’ve been practicing to learn the solo, but on 7:25, whenever I play the 11 & 10 on 2nd string mine sounds way off compared to yours. Is there anything I can do to fix that?
    Thank you!!

    • @MarkZabel
      @MarkZabel  Рік тому

      Thanks! You should try to do what I explain at 8:18 in the video. The 11th on the b-string should be pre-bent a whole step. Then you release and pull off to the 8th. The note on the 10th is on the G-string. When played it should immediately start the bend (whole step) for the rest of the lick. Hope that helps!

    hi Mark, wonderful lesson, thank you. really helpful. keep up the good work ! :-) P.S. when I started to study this solo in detail it strikes me that the quick lick you explain at 7:42 is so similar to a lick of Richie Blackmore's solo in Deep Purple's Smoke on the water ( starting at 3:11 in the original studio song ) and I was so used to play that lick ( it uses two notes more than in Peter Beckett's solo ) so I tend to use Richie's lick in the solo of Baby come back in that quick section and it works well. but of course, both solo's use the blues scale in these sections of the solo. Kind regards, Janet from The Netherlands P.S. 2 : I am still a student in guitar solo's for over a year now, I used to play rhythm guitar only. by watching video's like yours my confidence is slowly growing ;-)

      Hi Mark, thank you. currently I am doing some clips on YT for solo's which were never published, p.e. Dutch bands from my country with great solo guitar work. I should work on the pureness of my playing. at this moment I am mostly interested how to mute the strings and some sweep picking, though that is not really my thing but I should learn it. Kind regards, Janet

    Hey Mark, I've been learning this solo off and on for the past 5 months or so. I have a question for you on how you're playing the fast lick that you explain at 9:38. Specifically, how much of it do you end up picking at full speed? I have trained myself to execute the 10-8-10 portion on the D String with a pull-off-hammer-on, in a single pick. I can do it, but I'm not sure it comes out with the right tone. I think you are picking more of the lick than that, maybe picking it twice or more? I hear you do the pull-off from 10 to 8 on the G-string, but then are you pulling off from 10 to 8 on the D-String, or perhaps striking the note on the 10th fret of the D-String (C) and then hammering-on from 8 to 10? I've been practicing this lick for a while now, and I don't want to be burning in a bad habit! Cheers.

      Hi David. You should take the approach that works best for you. I just picked up my guitar and the most natural picking for me is to play
      - 3rd string 10-8 (Pick down on 10, pull off to 8)
      - 4th string 10-8-10 (pick all notes: down, up, down)
      -3rd string 8-10 and bend into "Chuck Berry" lick (up on 8, down on 10 and bend)
      If you have trouble playing up to speed on the 4th string, omit the upstroke on fret 8. Personally, I find it easier and better sounding to pick it.
      Of course, this is all pentatonic picking, so picking each note is possible. Again, I personally feel the first hammer-on (10 to 8 on the 3rd) is what was done and also that it sounds better than picking.

      Mark, thank you for this detailed reply! It is definitely your tutorial above that got me started on learning this solo. It's a great solo and you are a great player!
      I was a little afraid that you were going to say that you pick all three notes on the 4th string... it sounds great when you play it, and I think that Beckett could definitely be picking all three notes on the 4th string from listening to the recording. I gave it a shot and, well, you're a lot faster than me. I can almost do it at speed with a pull-off to the 8 and a quick pick on the 10th (4th string) on the way back up to the 3rd string, as you suggest, so I'm going to try to get that first. I'm determined to make this lick sound good, so I'll give it a shot with both approaches.
      One thing that surprised me is that you might be picking the 10th fret on the 3rd string going into the Chuck Berry bend. I have just be picking the 8 and bending up from the 10 without another pick on that string. That sounds pretty good too, and close to the recording to me. However, I just tried it your way, and it does sound different - potentially better! Without picking the 10 before the bend it's more of a "Ta-hooooom" versus a more pronounced "TA-Vrooom" where you really hear the F going into the bend up to G. I may need to re-wire that too! Now I wish I had asked you about how you pick this lick a while back. ;)

      You're welcome. I tend to pick more often than not. It's probably from my years of playing bluegrass! Glad you enjoyed and learned from the video. Thanks for your questions!

    • @daveazari
      @daveazari 7 років тому +1

      6 days later, I can do it at full speed! The only caveat is that I ended up with a sort of economy picking rather than strict alternating, but I'm picking all the same notes as you now. It sounds 100% better! I need to clean up my string noise and I'll finally be feeling good about this lick. I guess I just needed to know what to practice... thanks a lot again Mark!

      Not sure what you mean. Guessing you want amp settings, pedals, etc.
      1. Give your guitar a slightly overdriven sound. (Either pedal or amp with decent gain.0
      2. Add a touch of chorus - or if you don't have that, a little flanger or phaser
      3. Add a little reverb
      4. Play out of bridge position
      5. Add or subtract bass/mid/treble for your taste

    amp settings?

    • @MarkZabel
      @MarkZabel  6 років тому

      So long ago I can only speculate. I'm guessing that I'm using a Marshall Plexi emulator here with the Treble, Mid, and Bass at 50% and the gain at maybe 6.5 or 7 ... a little reverb and a bit of compression. Your mileage may vary. I find so much is dependent upon the specific guitar. But I'd guess this will get you close and you can tweak from there.

    mark you must get requests constantly. is there nothing you cant play? i would love to have your talent.iv got another request, when you have time. the song is your bird can sing. ive seen a lot of people play this, but they play too fast. i know this is a fast song. i really only need the opening solo. thanks dick bailey

    • @MarkZabel
      @MarkZabel  10 років тому

      Hi Dick. I get a few, yeah. Many from you, which is great! :)
      I can play a lot of things, but I'm not very good at metal or jazz ... or whammy bar stuff ... or Vai/Satriani/Eric Johnson ... or classical. But that's life ... music is the real master and we're all just learning and trying to connect to the flow. (Wow, that sounded like I should be living in California!)
      As an FYI, I hear my guitar hero - Robben Ford and I think, "Man I'll never play like that." Then I remember he has been playing full time for 40 years. I started early enough (8 years old ... ask me to demo Mary Had a Little Lamb ... I'm great at that!! :), but I stopped playing a couple of times ... lost 20 years of playing essentially. So I'm having fun getting back into the groove.
      Anyway, I'm happy to do "And Your Bird Can Sing." It's a great song. I think you've got the Shania song (Man, I Feel Like ...) and Brown Eyed Girl and I'll add the Beatles tune too. Keep the suggestions coming!
