I’m 28 and been working in Church for 7 years. The pain of young men is something I have experienced and been passionate about. Thank you for this conversation, it was a potent reminder for me to see others as an opportunity to give surplus value in all I do.

Prof G is right on point about the struggle with young men. As a retired principal I can tell you I saw this coming 25 years ago, but none of my peers wanted to discuss and/or consider making changes in our school programs to solve this issue. “There is no empathy for young men!” Many would say in anger that young men are getting what is long overdue them. So sad. In the end women suffer as much as the young men because they cannot find an equitable mate.

You've hit the nail on the head. I'm 75 and men of my generation in many aspects of life did not treat women well, culturally or personally. Any woman who was able opted for single independence. We didn't have to suffer lack of respect and physical violence from a mate, as women before us did, but as you say, it's not a full life. However, it's not the young men of today who are responsible for my generation's actions. It's we who are responsible for their pain, and for helping them grow to be men who can be proud of themselves. As a teacher, I could do what I could to help, but I couldn't be the good male role model and mentor they needed. So frustrating.

    • @ashleyw9852

Saying women suffer also due to the lack of an equitable mate is not really a suffer if they do not want what is historically spoken against.. But the economy is exacerbating this issue

The problem is we have no wage cap. The vast majority of the resources are flowing into the hands of the few faster each year. Feels bad when the top 10% get to eat 90% of the pizza.

well it's bad but not that bad. The top 1% in the US own about 30% of the weatlth. But a wage cap won't help...these people don't earn wages.

The worst thing about this interview is that it will likely generate a flood of comments accusing the podcast of accommodating “wokeism.”
Don’t let that deter you; not only was this fantastic, it’s essential listening.
Carey, thank you for your courage in once again opening your platform up so we can hear diverse cultural voices from people with wisdom and compassion.

    • @GKEL18

You know this business, called “Wokeism” really is a load of non-sense and is really just a right-wing invention to put people down. Any hint of caring makes it a target. It makes me laugh how the same right-wingers use mens difficulties to rage, particularly if you point out violence towards women. But, they’re more interested in the rage, than doing anything about it. The red states have the worst statistics regard just about everything. The top ten violence states are red, starting with Alabama. What are the governors doing about it. Obviously nothing. Trumps is all talk and not likely to do a damn thing, other than use them as soldiers. If I were a democrat Id be campaigning on just this issue. It would be about school, trades, encouraging mentor groups and bringing industry and infrastructure to these states to give them meaning, purpose and opportunity. Isolated men are just dangerous and serve no purpose. Just a thought.

I love Scott Galloway because he's so spot on. I agree with him about the reasons for rage and shame, related to income disparity between the old and young. But as the father of a now teenager, the affect of the covid pandemic can't be ignored. My son was 11 through the worst parts of the covid lockdown and sitting at home playing video games for only a couple of months had such a profound affect on him. I bought some mountain bikes which has since turned into a very important hobby for us. His primary friendship base has been built around it. It's been huge for his self worth. I hate to blame video games for the problems of young me, but it was making my son miserable. Video games don't build self worth.

The main problem with the lockdowns was the inability to see friends outside of school or college. I’d argue that playing video games is a symptom of social isolation, it was really the only way you spend time with friends during that period.

You're talking about an America that never existed. He's been privileged for so long that he can't see the 99% AT ALL.
He's making himself richer by pretending to be an advocate for men while continuing to profit from and denigrate men.
I was poor, not an "immigrant", didn't qualify for pell grants while supporting a dad with Parkinson's and a mom with breast cancer. No one lifted a single finger to help me, while being a permantly injured veteran that couldn't even use my GI bill. His class and generation completely screwed me. I spent the winter mixing concrete by hand with a torn meniscus and the VA doing everything they could to keep from fixing it. No one cares.
I volunteered to defend this country in the infantry while having the highest GT score in every unit I was in. No one cares. I was in the top 10% of my high school, a famous one they made a TV show about, and still didn't get scholarship of any kind. I had to work yhrough HS and never did homework. No one cares.
All this began in the 80's. It has only gotten worse. He's promoting the policies that helped me so much I can't use the words I want to describe the level of disdain I have for his social cast and politics.
    America is over.
    Welcome to amerika comrades.
Keep voting, cause that's working. That's sarcasm.

All this stuff is predicated on certain basic ideas that despite cultural and economic assumptions to the contrary simply do not apply to everyone. For instance that everybody wants to make a lot of money, that everybody wants to be in a " romantic relationship", that everybody is interested in tech, social media etc. that everybody wants to own a house ad nauseam. People are people and they want different things for as many reasons as there are people in this world. A lot of the sadness, rage and anger among the entire population, not just men, derives from the powers that be, the establishment if you will promulgating the idea that you're not an ok person if you don't want or are not interested in what everyone is supposed to want in this totally heartless society. Like it or not Jack it's the people who pay 14 million in taxes and the corporations they serve so enthusiastically that make the sick twisted rules and impose the perverted ideas on people and their lives that ends up resulting in so much misery. I like guitars and making music. I like riding my bike. I like animals and would never dream of driving around in a car as if it's what God intended destroying the little creatures of this earth and turning them into roadkill while destroying the atmosphere...etc. I've been in five relationships with Women and had some other adventures with them as well but it never really worked out for me. Does that mean my life's been a waste? You talk as if everyone should aspire to being like everyone else if everyone else is a property owning car driving corporate ladder climbing clone of the capitalist consumerist ideal in other words the very sort of sucker who believes they can't make their own rules but have to live a life that ultimately serves the interests of the very wealthy

Young men are falling behind. The obstacles are online porn, video games, no adult responsibilities like marriage and children, no money, social media, lack of sexual contact with women, and staying longer at home. Parents are also enabling their children by allowing them to stay at home. Young men are also not passionate about something. There used to be families where kids took music lessons. Many turned that into a hobby or even a profession. Spending 6-8 hours a day on their phones is not a passion.

The preservation of reputation (which failed because it was counter to the nature of God) over justice for the victims and acountability for the predators and the treatment of LGBT really soured me on the church as an institution. For a church, reputation should never come before the primary call of being the hands and feet of God, showing love and support to the othered the poor and opressed.

I was exchange student in high school late 1980's...only there for a summer, didnt make many friends nor could I talk to the host parents as I didnt speak Portuguese. In college, I learned Portuguese, did a year abroad in Portugal, finally had full convos with them. But during that year, I dated two guys...in US no guy had an interest. The two ppl were not even Portuguese but they were from former Portuguese colonies. They also were different from my race. Not sure of why I didn't fit in as I was younger...to some extent still don't but do not care anymore. I would think it would be much much harder now with everyone's eyes glued to their devices. But from my observations of UK students at a university or in a university town in US...ppl flocked to hear the accent. (However back then it wasn't as easy to hear other English flavors.) Most of the time ppl become friends before they do any asking out...if there is an chemistry it will happen naturally. Takes the pressure off...though making friends as you get past college age seems to be harder than it should be.

The Age of Materialism is evident everywhere and technology and social media has supercharged that idea.
Edit: The Prof now lives in London. Perhaps he could move to San Diego (the nation's most expensive city) and help solve the homeless situation there.

Atheism aligns with a correct view of Reality and I believe it - I believe Atheism as spiritual philosophy. I'm not 'kept from Faith' in the sense of not allowing my Will align with that of a religion by some lack of attachment to the mystery. By the way, most people in any religious group don't have the same belief, otherwise that'd be called a cult. And rightly so.

I loved the commentary on the He Gets Us campaign. I agree, the marketing of it was brilliant, but for me it had a fairly dramatic backfire effect as I see almost no actual evidence from modern Christianity in America, of self-professing Christians comporting with any of the imagery. I know the Green family helped fund it and they have a very dubious track record with women's and trans rights (not to mention the Museum of the Bible museum antiquities scandal). Also, related to my first point, based on how *many* if not *most* of the most vocal Christians I know actually behave toward the LGBTQ community, it was just a massive message about hypocrisy. Final point and then I'll get off my soap box, imagine how much food for food pantries could've been bought, or homeless shelters built, or women's shelters funded, with the money spent (and being spent) on the campaign. It's just a massive "talk the talk" rather than "walk the walk" which is what I see out of almost every loud and proud Christian around me these days.

Young women would rather go to college than get married, and so young men have lost their number one motivation to get off their asses and do something.

The point is young men have lost their number one motivation to succeed. My dad didn’t labor all day loading trucks in the 1950s (age 22) because he enjoyed it. He had a wife and baby son. All bis friends were in the same boat

“That is my god” says the atheist when talking about love.
Love is god, god is love.
The atheist’s god is god, he just doesn’t know it because hatred likes to disguise himself as god.
A lot of hateful people claim to follow god while following hate, so it makes it hard for those who serve love to realize that they are already on god’s side.
    Remember Matthew 6:5-6

I watched this podcast. Then, I took a trip down memory lane and remembered the virtue and caliber of woman my grandmother. Hmmm. Yeah. Sorry. Way out of touch. Need to recalibrate and jettison the woke goggles.
